howdy folks

recent posts about early chicago / detroit made me dig out some old chicago
stuff like 'let the music move you' (nightwriters?) & nitro deluxe 'on a
mission'. truly wonderful stuff and yeah i always thought that the early d
techno had a lot in common with this kind of stuff, eerie, sorta dubby,
primitive.

anyway ... i know there is a bit more of this that i have on this one old
'house sound of chicago' lp...anyone know if there are any good cd comps of
this stuff? thanx.

Re: [313] UR In Scotland Tonight

2001-01-08 Thread Graham Templeton
Definitely the best club night i've been to! They kicked off with a half
hour dj set including Stardancer and Afrogermanic before the MC annouced the
live show. The surprise of the night though was when he then told the crowd
that Mad Mike was going to say a few words. I don't think anyone thought he
was there till that point. Waht a cheer that got from the crowd!! Anyways he
said a few thanks to the Rub-a-Dub crew, Ranxx for the London gig, and
declared Club69 as one of the best clubs (and also the dirtiest and
sweatiest he said!), then he intrioduced Agent Chaos and they belted out an
astonishing live set - like the comment sfrom the London gig, Amazon live
was something special and all done without any sequencers according to the
MC. Mad Mike (i think) was playing the chords and it really was excellent.
There was a huge chorus of 'f**k sony and bmg' an all i remember. They
played for about 40 mins or so. Then i think it was Clandestine on the decks
and we got some classics for the next couple of hours, I remember Daystar
Rising, Mayday mix of Jaguar, Lost Transmission from Mars, some really deep
funky electro, Ultra-violet Images.
Also heard the Rub-a-Dub chaps play the new Keith Tucker track which was
pretty special as well.
Great atmosphere, great crowd, amazing music.
Carl Craig played a nice Dj set at Pressure the other week as well. Finished
his set with a Radiohead track from Kid A according to my mates, I don't
have the album - a nice electronic track.
Cheers,
Graham

jazz, techno,house

2001-01-08 Thread Berislav Oremus
in past week i was going thru old messages on the list and found some posts
about jazz and techo and house.
few posts was techno is not into jazz, some were oposite, and i can make
judgement about is it or not.
it was fuuny that i was listening Lalo Schifrin in concert and in his "Fox"
theme found some parts of St. Germains " Soul Salsa Soul".
i kinda want to sell this record now:( , first thing that impressed in techh
music was innovations, not some boring guitar themes and craying about
beatles and rolling stones.

also i got Le mighty bop " greatest hits" and that is jazz, but there is
another tpic thhat is interesting to me.
its more downtempo rhyhtms, hip hop like.
where do you see hip hop and other like styles in electronic music, if say
electronic music is music that is made with electronic instruments(drum
machines in first place). and we now tat hip hop rhythms wasnt made with
acoustic drums. today .

thnx.

So what if some of the mixing wasnt the smoothest in the world, surely the
point is that UR took the time to come over to the UK and put on a show that

Certainly the best night I've had for a long long time.

Catchin' up... (LONGish)

2001-01-08 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Morning all,

Just a (not very) quick note to list some of the Detroit purchases I made
over the weekend:

Robert Hood "NightTime World 2" (M-Plant)

Excellent vinyl triple pack (finally) from Mr. Hood, I hadn't heard it
before as I don't have a CD player (something I intend to rectify if only
for the reissue of Sun Ra's "Languidity") and had been warned that it wasn't
that good. Maybe it's because I approached it with a scepticism to have
blown away but this just confirms for me that Rob Hood is one of the top 3
producers from Detroit right now (see below for the other two). From the
cover of Love Unlimited's "Midnight Groove" to the straight up minimal
techno of "Teflon" to the closing "Blackness" it's a forward looking
collection.

Underground Resistance "Revolution For Change" (Network)

Finally found it. The last copy in Smallfish was peeking out at me from down
behind the counter just before I left.

Underground Resistance "Nation 2 Nation" (UR)

I have never found a copy of this which was properly centred. This one is. I
also heard "Millenium 2 Millenium" and wasn't vastly impressed. I resisted
the temptation to buy it anyway, but I will probably cave in in future...

Deep Chord 7

No comment on top of all previous ones needed really. Sounds like Basic
Channel stuff. Which is OK by me. Still looking for #09, and finding it
increasingly hard. If anyone in the US digs up a spare one, let me know
privately, I'll cover the costs (though email me before you shell out for
it, in case I find one tomorrow or something.) This is also the case with
"Every Dog part 1", of which only 50 copies made it to the UK, allegedly.

Stacey Pullen "The Stand" (Black Flag)

Hi energy bassline or no, I reckon it's great dancefloor stuff. Haven't had
the chance to hear him DJ recently, as Space are evil when it comes to
announcing line ups that haven't been booked.

Sean Deason & Claude Young "Zig Zag" (Intuit Solar)

Zig is the one for me, nice subtle production all round. I have to admit, I
haven't heard anything Sean has done for ages, i.e. since about 96 (sorry
Sean). I will rectify this in future on the evidence of this.

Claude Young "Fading The Edges" (Deta)

What the f***?! This is superb. If you haven't got this already then get it.
Claude Young takes it to another level: the attention to detail is
phenomenal, and damn, this sh*t is deep! My 2nd of top 3 Detroit producers
right now. Thanks to Tristan for pointing this one out.

Anthony Shakir "Tracks For My Mother" (Frictional)

Nobody, for me, does it better than Shake just now. There was a lot of talk
recently about (the lack of) parallels with jazz in techno, yet for me
Anthony Shakir is well and truly in the jazz ethic. Everything he does
exudes artistic integrity for me: raw, honest, soulful electronic music.
Respect. A true creative force. No 1, if you hadn't guessed it... Includes a
version of "Bob" from his release on Klang.

Joe Henderson "Power To The People" (Milestone)

I have looked for this for ages, just for the Pharoah Sanders-esque "Black
Narcissus", so I am pleased. Apologies for the lack of techno to this one,
but it is from Detroit. If you haven't heard Joe before, and you'd like to,
check out his excellent LPs for Blue Note (especially "Mode For Joe", which
is perhaps the best album on the whole label).

Also, I have finally got round to getting a new mixer (over a year of
withdrawal symptoms were getting too much), so I will, when I get the means
to record, be putting a few mixes/compilations online. I'll (tactfully) let
you all know as and when. You'll have to forgive me if it isn't all
promos/white labels: as you can see from the above, I've been catchin' up a
wee bit.

Take care,

Jonny.

If I listen to this track and ignore the vocals it really reminds me of some

Re: [313] track id

2001-01-08 Thread Michael Taylor
Hello,

Are you thinking of that old track by Rockwell that came out on Motown
around 1984? The one with Michael Jackson singing the chorus.

If that is the track you are thinking of, it has an interesting story
behind it. Rockwell was Berry Gordy's son, and that track was put out a
birthday present of sorts...

...I wish my pop could have Quincy Jones write me a track for me and get
the King of Pop to blow some soul over the top. ;)

Take care,
Mike Taylor

I knew it.

I was a mega Time fan and I know Jimmy Jam as in Terry Lewis/Jimmy Jam
wasn't a Detroit DJ, if nothing else.

Cheers!

I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for myself...
