Re: [313] live on the puters
I'm not a fruityloops hacker -- I can see where it would be cool but I've got my plate full with other methods. I have watched Tony Rohr work fruityloops to excellent effect, and his setup is much simpler than what you're contemplating. Tony sets up a fruityloops song with something like 75-80 rows. Some rows are individual drum hits that he's pre-sequenced, and some trigger longer oneshot samples or loops. He has 3 or 4 patterns defined, basically a main pattern and turnaround patterns he can flip to. So his whole set is muting and unmuting rows and tweaking effects. And it turns out to be very effective. What you're talking about is much more complicated, and you're going to run into sync problems when you're mixing between songs. Ultimately if you can solve the sync problems, and you computer can handle 2 instances of fruitloops without glitching, this would actually be a very effective way to do a live set. As for whether the set could hold someone's attention, I think that's more up to the quality of your tracks than the means they're presented. If it's crowd reaction you're talking about, setting up long breakdowns and pumping your fist in the air when the kick comes in seems to work pretty well, even if it's a cheap trick. The true heads aren't swayed by cheap theatrics, but then they'll be with you if the tracks are tight, even if all you do is hide under a table and tweak knobs. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cornwarning.com -- Iowa's First Techno Record Label http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes On Thu, 25 Jan 2001, Dr. Robot wrote: > hey guys. > > got some personal opinion questions for all of you. i am currantly putting > together a live show and heres the deal on that. i am piecing some instances > in fruity. around 30 fruity loop songs all worked out with real time > effect-ability. now, what i plan on doing is mixing between two instances of > fruity loops such as a dj would records. i open up two fruity loop programs > and run each ones sound to a diffrent sound card. from each sound card i run > a line to a mixer channel. now in doing so it allows me to play one song, > and get another one ready in the next instance of fruity, all while fiddling > knobs on a phat boy designated to the currant instance. i am currious if > anyone has seen or has done this before. and those of you who just attend > shows rather than create them, does this sound like somthing you could keep > interest in (if the music was of your tastes). any feedback would be > appreciated. > > thanks, > mike > > > _ > Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >

hey.. i do much the same thing, but i use ACID, it's a much more powerful live pgm than fruity...you can set your loop region and work on stuff outside, and then move the loop region over when you are done etc...and you can use up to eight effects plug-ins and assign an envelop to each sound...i sound like a commercial for ACID, actually i do freelance work for them (sonic foundry)...so if you have any questions, ask. Sorry, more IDs
This reminds me, there's a track I've been looking to ID now for at least 5 years. I heard it on a mixtape by John Kennedy, and he mixes out of a Kenny Larkin track from the Metaphor album and into this lovely mellow techy tune that uses the same tones as those famous notes from Close Encounters. It has vague echoey voices in the background, it's mixed at about 135bpm, but the main thing is the slow chimes ala CEOTTK. Any clues? I see theres a part two of Mills' Metropolis on vinyl now. He's getting fond of his parts! cheers, Dan http://www.geocities.com/Paris/1267/index.html http://www.mp3.com/DanButler

ID's
Hi 313ers If someone could ID the following track for me i would be so happy (i've been trying to discover what it is for a few years now after i heard Carl Craig play it on his Radio One Essential mix...) It's in Kenny Larkin's set on Plus 8 Transmissions part a, and it plays at aroun 18mins 30 secs.WHAT a track : kind of a looped strummed guitar sound with simple but effective bassline with the occasional break in the loop...vocal comes in : "searchin'.searchin' every night" which loops round and round Hopefully yours, H

Re: [313] new monolake and [more stuff]
I emailed Robert re: vinyl release, but have yet to hear back from him since he's out on tour right now. Doubtful that it will get released on vinyl however since none of Monolake's other albums have, however there are already singles for fragile/static and ice/stratoshpere out there on imbalance. I just picked up the album myself yesterday, and even though I have both the singles, the other material is superb. Reaktor runs fine on PCs as well if that's what you have. If you mean you need a faster Mac to run Reaktor, sure. Hi there, Recently heard a different mix of joe smooth's 'promised land' on maffia music, very laid back, probably slower bpm, vocal was alot softer than the 'normal' version, a really deep bassline, basically a very chilled version of a monster house track anyone got any info on this track is it widely available and I've just never heard it? thanks PS if anyone's wondering, the 'promised land' is scotland!

Archival footage of seminal performers such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen; Robert Moog of the Moog Synthesiser; 70s German art-rock bands such as Kraftwerk and Can; Eurodisco innovator Giorgio Moroder; industrial noise units such as Britain's Throbbing Gristle; the early hip hop DJs who manipulated vinyl on their turntables to create "scratch" music, and many more. Lee traces the tribal roots of such styles as 'house', 'acid', 'ambient', 'Detroit' and 'German drum and bass' and the program features performance clips from such bands as Prodigy, Moby, Money Mark, Future Sound of London and the Invisbl Scratch Piklz in the key centres of the US, Germany, Japan and Britain. O/T RE: MAX
Greetings all, This is rather ironic as I just downloaded the demo version of max on saturday...The user tutorial alone is 250 pages long. You can do some incredible things with this piece of software, and at least in the beginning it relatively strightforwars, but alas I think it would take me a year at least to get the fundamentals downsigh Looks like my next purchase is gonna be reaktor (and a new mac to run it, argh!!!) jim
Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?
> A copy of the pdf I got from Richie is at www.openbar.com/Invitation_final.pdf OOOH, I didn't know that this is what sparked the debate!!! Hell, I think its a perfect marriage!! The one draw back aside from the smell and static ;) is that I recognize records by sight and by the little pictures or words I draw on the label. This is another reason why artists hate me at times, I often have no clue what I am playing, unless it is *extraordinary*. All I see and know is a little picture I drew with a black sharpie, like an arrow, or squiggle, and I instantly know what I am grabbing, but no clue who made it... So with this technology, every word will be in the exact same font, making the track search difficult, IMHO... My big question is when and where did Richie test this, because you know he did at some point live... And I know these talks have been going on around the +8 tour... hmmm... darw_n "create, demonstrate, toneshift..." www.thedemonstration.com www.sphereproductions.com www.mannequinodd.com www.mp3.com/darw_n search for "djdarwin" on napster

Are you willing to argue that the 12" vinyl recording was the the best solution for dance music dj's, or was it simply the only one available at the time? A tangent, but why did Mad Mike use analog gear and tape editing? because that's what he had most readily available to him at the time. After that, it becomes the process he knew best, and gave the sounds that people have come to associate with him. Progress is a fine thing. The advent of the word processor did not kill the written word, nor did it suddenly create a billion masterpieces of literature. -- fix.er \'fik-s*r\ n : one that fixes : as : one that intervenes to enable a person to circumvent the law or obtain a political favor : one that adjusts matters or disputes by negotiation
