Good Bye
It is the beginning of the end (of legitimizing piracy). From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/business/newsid_1142000/1142663.stm Napster's chief executive Hank Barry has told BBC News Online in an exclusive interview that users will soon be charged a membership fee. Mr Barry also said royalties would be paid to artists whose material is swapped over the internet with the help of Napster software. I think that the record companies believe the best way to proceed is to settle the question... through litigation Hank Barry, Napster chief executive Napster had been sued and threatened with closure by all of the world's biggest music publishing groups, but late last year the internet venture signed a deal with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann. Talks are now on-going with other media groups, including TVT and Edel. Mr Barry said that details of the size and scope of the membership fee are yet to be finalised. Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Barry said: "Napster will continue to be an easy site to use and Napster will pay royalties." When asked when the membership fee would be put in place he said there was no final schedule. Bertelsmann has indicated that it could be brought in as early as June this year. Napster's site connects music lovers across the world, allowing them to download digital music tracks from each others' computers free of charge. The music industry has felt threatened by the rapid growth of the Napster community, because they fear the loss of music sales, while artists lose out on royalties. Guessing the market Napster has high hopes for the potential size of the market. Mr Barry said there were 200 million multimedia PCs worldwide with the capability to copy an MP3 file. Napster's software, meanwhile, had been downloaded and installed 57 million times. While the average person may have 30 CDs, he said hardware with the capability of holding 614 CDs could now be bought for just $150 in the United States. Lawsuits still threaten Napster In the meantime, though, Napster still faces lawsuits from most of the big record firms. Mr Barry said: "I think that the record companies believe the best way to proceed is to settle the question." Napster, he says, still hopes for "constructive dialogue" and probably "legislation" to solve the copyright issue. And Mr Barry maintains that record sales are rising: "If you give people more access to music, they buy more music." __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The only one I got was the Plankton/Clavia´s North Ep! How many releases exist of this great label? Thanx in advance and stay true! Arne
Re: [313] the long dj set
on a similar note, a venue can have something to do with the way a dj presents the music. in a large club or rave setting the dj is expected to delivery phat beats that keep the dancers dancing and quick and quality beat matching and mixing skills are essential to keep the flow and feel of the night's techno journey. in smaller clubs or lounges people may not be expecting quick mixing skills as much but would rather here some great music and smooth and creative transitions. I've heard DJs in a club startle the dancers because their mixing and transitions were slow and sloppy. I've also heard DJs try to mix songs in and out too quickly and not allowing time to let a quality track play out for a while. As a fairly rookie DJ myself I find that playing rhythmic techno sets is effective by making quick transitions but i like to extend house tracks a bit because there is so much going on with the arrangements of the songs. experimental techno (force ink, chain reaction, brinkman, kompakt, etc) is fun to mix two tracks together for a long time creating almost a third unique track. i wish i had the skill to mix 3 records at once but i'm just not there yet - not even close ;) - my thoughts djr Playing almost whole records together can be just as valid a DJ style in the sense of creating something new. Perhaps not in the 'creating new sounds' sense, but definitely in the 'creating a new experience' sense. Two words: Theo Parrish. Or David Mancuso, check the book 'Last night a DJ saved my life' for a description how he perfectly created a mood, playing records from beginning to end, even allowing silence between two records. Re: [313] the long dj set
Ya know, I haven't really noticed this trend on Betalounge or Groovetech, or from 313 DJs in general. Am I missing something? I think part of being a skilled DJ is knowing when to mix agressively and when to let the records do the talking. It's an essential programming skill if you ask me. It would be a shame to play one minute of something off the new St. Germain for instance. Re: [313] the longg dj set
This is a great question!!! I think its because the whole notion of the DJ being a creative artist is lost. The newer DJ's never even thought of creating, they entertain, "rockstardom", the very thing we rebelled against to begin with... Instead of "oh, I am going to take this hook, and this break down and create something new", it has become *exactly* what a wedding or radio DJ or a POP band does, they play *exactly* what the crowd wants to hear... The older DJ's, or some of the persistent ones (like myself) find the creation to be for more interesting, and far more valid. But the problem here is that this is very hard to communicate to a new DJ. So many times, that I actually got in arguments with "normal" non techno orientated people about DJing. They could not understand that it can be more that just playing records... darw_n "create, demonstrate, toneshift..." http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search "djdarwin" on napster - Original Message - From: "Lester Kenyatta Spence" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 11:27 AM Subject: [313] the longg dj set > i've been listening to betaloung, and groovetechand there is a > distinctly different approach to dj sets than say ten + years ago. rather > than about a MINUTE of a song, then a segue, djs now play the whole > songor close to it, before bringing in something else. > > does this occur as a result of djs having to spin 6-8 hour setsor is > there something else going on? > > > > peace > lks > > > > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >

i saw a mix cd at the local record store the other day. it was a mix with only TRXX records on it. it think it was mixed by rick garcia or some other chicago dj. havent heard it yet but track listing had alot of what your looking for. -Original Message- From: David Bitterman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2001 2:05 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Craving some old acid house Anyone know where I can get a GOOD mix tape of some older acid house and chicago jacky type tracks? I don't have much to listen to and would like a good mix of it, while simultaneously attempting the feat of avoiding to much cheese. Any suggestions? RE: [313] Craving some old acid house
You could do worse than this mix cd: http://www.studio-k7.com/xmix/x068cd.html Just a few hundred days before the turn of the century the X-Mix-Series starts with a new chapter. Founded in 1992 Studio K7 set standarts with it's combination of a mixed DJ-Set and animated video which no other label has achieved. Since then every X-MIX carried a special idea through some amazing virtual worlds and top-class DJs as Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin & John Aquaviva, Dave Angel, DJ Hell, Mr.C, Ken Ishii, Dave Clarke or Laurent Garnier were the pilots of enjoyment. As the tenth voyage is on it?s way to jack the box, this X-MIX will be hosted by Oliver Bondzio und Ramon Zenker aka HARDFLOOR, who contributed their special set to the ten years of Acid-House! Therefore it?s obvious that it had to carry the trademark of the Summer of Love: The Smiley![PARA]Hardfloor are worldwide one of the most respected and succsessful german technoacts, already gaining international with their third release "Acpierence". "That's pretty important to us," says Oliver Bondzio, "that you can say: this is a Hardfloor record. But we're not stuck in the past," he asserts, and then adds: "On the other hand, our greatest hits always had a 303 bassline."[PARA]The MUZIK-Magazine called "Acpierience" the best Acidrecord ever and as an aftereffect to this succsess Hardfloor devolped a distinctive acid sound, a style which, as producers, they have made their very own. This unique style was also highly requested for many remixes and people like New Order, Anne Clark, Mory Kante, Richie Hawtin or Robert Armani got their 303-treatment.[PARA]Besides it?s focus on the times of Acid-House this X-MIX is dedicated to Armando (who died of leukemia in 1997), one of the inventors of acid house and a friend of Oliver. This acid flashback is also Hardfloor's first ever mix CD. "We've had a really good time doing it and now we're filled with new energy to go out and work on more Hardfloor stuff."[PARA]For Oliver and Hardfloor partner Ramon Zenker, acid was where it all began. Back in 1988, Oliver was DJing at Konigsburg in Krefeld, one corner of Germany where, in advance of the rest of the country, there was already a thriving rave scene. "Acid was what made us start producing music. I was always into Kraftwerk and other electronic music, but it was too complex for me to reproduce. Acid sounded so cheap and yet so powerful. All you needed was a drum machine and a 303."[PARA]Hardfloor's X-Mix is a celebration of that sound, a dance-step back a decade into 1988, without forgetting the exiting present. "That was the Summer of Love - the big year for acid house." Classic Chicago acid tracks from the likes of Nathan Jones aka Phuture/DJ Pierre ("Box Energy" or "Spank Spank"), Chris Westbrook aka BamBam ("Where is Your Child"), Housemaster Boys ("Housenation"), Sleezy D (I?ve lost control), Adonis and Fast Eddie rub grooves with three brand-new and exclusive Hardfloor tracks, crafted to sound as though they're also from 1988. These tracks are the first Hardfloortracks after their 3 albums and 11 singles for the Frankfurt based Harthouselabel, which split in 1997 and releases now only in the UK via EYE-Q.[PARA]In comparison to the past X-MIXes the visual realisation of this set was tranferred into an entirely new territory. Working with 16mm film, video samples, animated still frames, and raw material from old scientific films, the X-Mix series here leaves all tired and typical imagery behind, looking to the past in order to start moving into the future. The austrian company MVD (based in Vienna) was responsible for the new outlook and their earlier work was displayed at events like the Sonar-Festival '97 (Spain), Days of Architecture`97 (Austria) or CD-ROMs like the Farmers Manual on Mego-Records.[PARA]As a special style of music Acid is in a constant rate of development through the work of various producers from around the whole world. The X-MIX-Series runs through the same ongoing process of a change in content and optics, never forgetting it?s prime directive of releasing an excellent DJ-Set. Therefore we want to end this introduction with a great and very true quote which defines quite good this 10th X-MIX: "Acid sound so unique, you just have to move your feet!" women in electronic music
I need some opinions. I am currently trying to put together a panel discussion featuring some accomplished women in electyronic music from the Detroit area. Can people think of some good questions to ask them for a panel discussion and some good topics other than the obvious to bring up. Thanks. -Rachael
Re: [313] Events in SF?
I forgot to mention Soundworks, which has a wide variety but for some reason I never find much I like there. Almost all new and not much backstock, and I thrive on backstock and second-hand. But the people are very nice and the CD selection in particular is excellent. Here's a quick guide with most of the addresses and so on: http://www.flux.net/Guide/sforecord.html
RE: [313] Craving some old acid house
Ask James Bucknell, he's on this list. Great dj with very deep crates for most things, but in particular, early Chicago and acid. Suspect he's got a CD of this sorta thing already made. Sorry James! RE: finalscratch and the future of DJing
I may be jumping in on this a little late, but I just wanted to make a couple of quick comments... The first is that P-funk, James Brown, and eurodisco, have just as much to do with techno as Tofler That is the beauty of it... The combination of organic, anologue ideas with that of the digital age That's the beauty of the use of turntables, it's a way for human hands to manipulate the sounds created by digital equiptment... No computer program will ever give you the freedom it takes to truly work a record, and a crowd Could you seriously see Derrick May, or Stacey Pullen, or especially Claude Young using a computer to just "smooth mix" their sets??? In addition the mention of Blade Runner obviously shows me that the person who wrote that dosn't truly understand the beauty of the film or Philip K. Dicks writing... Sure he's writing about the future... but he's talking about it negetively about the loss of human emotion and our reliance on technology to find our happiness (read the book if you've only seen the movie) In addition artistically, he's telling a story about the future using a classic storytelling method, the detective story Same with the film The film is shot in "Noir" style... A style that has been around since the 50's These are both combinations of futuristic ideas as well as classic ideas Which is very much what began techno... Hell, kraftwerk was just trying to make american motown music with machines that's the beauty of it... it is not an art of convenience Thanks for readig this if you did... Have a good night Scott
