Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in
open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection.
I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was
the
term a friend used.)
Hawtin played a 6 hour set. To be honest I found it quite boring. I've
enjoyed
previous sets from him but this just seemed to be one minimal track blended
smoothly into another minimal track. There seemed to be a lack of variety,
nothing that really stood out.
Where was the madness? Where was the darkness? How about some deck skills?
What
about the funk? It was all too serious (cold & clinical.) I think Professor
Hawtin needs to spend less time in the studio and maybe even go out for a
dance
one night to remember what it's like to be the other side of the DJ booth.
I'm going to hear him again at Atomic Jam alongside Luke Slater this month
so
he's got another chance to impress, I just hope he can prove me wrong.

The house of Misfits!
Dateline: 1 October 2001

Truly incredible! I have never listened and danced to so many good tracks
all at once. The house of Misfits come up with another special event to
celebrate house music. It was last Saturday 29th September and there was
also Detroit’s Mike Grant who smilingly entertained the fabulous crowd with
his uplifting to hard set. The atmosphere was warm, the crowd happily
dancing, the music very soulful & jazzy, the DJs brilliant and the venue
finally in different costume. It was time for a little creativity and a
change in colour and this contributed very much to the surroundings. Red
curtains all over the place and big screen.

Owen Jay supplied his warm up session to the foreign guest perfectly with a
more downtempo mix of jazzy influenced house - those organs and saxophones
turned a vibe which matches no other party in years. When would this music
turn mainstream I don’t know. Probably we DJs wouldn’t like this to happen
after all, but it’s a pity that few people appreciate it… Still, it’s a
positive thing that these parties happen in the underground so let’s support
and appreciate the efforts of few people who work hard for it.

Would you rather he soudned the same every time you saw him? That sounds like
it's a lot more boring than one night that didn't quite catch your fancy. I'd
write that night up to one that you weren't quite in the mood for.

I want djs and producers to experiment, to reinvent themselves, to explore. How
sad it would be if Richie never moved beyond Cybersonic or if Kevin still was
only Inner City, etc...

it's a lot more boring than one night that didn't quite catch your fancy. I'd
write that night up to one that you weren't quite in the mood for.

I want djs and producers to experiment, to reinvent themselves, to explore. How
sad it would be if Richie never moved beyond Cybersonic or if Kevin still was
only Inner City, etc...

[313] new album by Marc Moulin (TELEX)

2001-10-03 Thread Jan Claeyssens
Don't know why nobody mentioned it yet but Marc Moulin, one of the driving
forces behind Telex has made a new album. A sort of return to his roots. He
played in diverse Jazz-ensembles before.

So know he has an album out on Blue Note. In a St-Germain vain, but also
very good. Top secret is the name.

I also just recently got Closer to the Edit and was very unimpressed. I
didn't think it was even as good as "Decks, EFX...", much less a step past
that.

The first time I saw Richie spin was in 93 or so in Detroit. The last time
he impressed me spinning was at Sickness in 96 (or 97???). Since he's
started doing the Decks EFX & 909 thing every time I see him it seems like
he's basically just playing the same set over and over. I'm sure that the
same is now true with the Closer to the Edit/Final Scratch set.

I saw Hawtin @ The End around November 2000 and was blown away by him, but
then at Sonar in June he was dismal, being rather dull and without variety.
I admire his methodology and approach, but I feel sometimes that the minimal
approach he uses might be better off as part of a live act rather than just
DJing. Although I'll probably be shouted down, in the UK especially I feel
that live acts are usually given much more time by a crowd if they
experiment rather than just Djing to a club atmosphere where people are
likely to get bored if they hear repitition.

I'd love to see a lot more "micro-house" (see The Wire a few months back)
acts over here in the UK but I just can't see them fitting into the music
policy of club promoters over here.

November was the first time I heard Hawtin at The End and I too enjoyed it a lot
more than last week. I was also at Sonar and that was better than last week! As
daweed mentioned tho it's probably just due to his promoting DE9 but the old
Richie was a lot more interesting, varied & fun! That set in November was pure
madness from what I remember.

Hey Derek,

I have a show at http://www.1Groove.com called Equinox. It's on
wednesday nites 9pm-12am EST, but you can always check out the archived
show for 1 week - till the next show replaces it. The show usually
starts with some deep house sounds, then proceeds into a variety of
techno. There's always some Detroit styles, along with minimal, Electro,
and the odd bangin set. I usually have a special guest on every week
(last week was Kenny Glasgow, this week is Rod G from Poundhouse.ca).
I'll also throw in a spotlight on an artist every once in a while
(usually when someone is coming to town - this week Derrick May is
playing in Toronto). ;)

Cheers!

2001-10-03 Thread daweed
uh here we go again, get ready for 12.597 posts on hawtin!

just kidding :P

I saw him about a month ago, but it wasn't minimal (I guess it wasn't
promotion for the record) but also a bit boring, tracks like the bells,
orange, user, ben sims... quite standar

Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection. I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was the
term a friend used.)
Hawtin played a 6 hour set. To be honest I found it quite boring. I've enjoyed
previous sets from him but this just seemed to be one minimal track blended
smoothly into another minimal track. There seemed to be a lack of variety,
nothing that really stood out.
Where was the madness? Where was the darkness? How about some deck skills? What
about the funk? It was all too serious (cold & clinical.) I think Professor
Hawtin needs to spend less time in the studio and maybe even go out for a dance
one night to remember what it's like to be the other side of the DJ booth.
I'm going to hear him again at Atomic Jam alongside Luke Slater this month so
he's got another chance to impress, I just hope he can prove me wrong.

2001-10-03 Thread veto
Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin and the one time I do post it's a bit of self
promotion!!! Anyway here goes:

BRAVE STARR * PROMOTIONS

PLEASE FIND ENCLOSED

Iridite EP (IR001)
RELEASED .

Fresh from the Detroit Electronic Music festival this collective of new
artists release their debut EP on Glasgow's newest techno label, Iridite
Recordings. The concept of this release brings 4 individual production
outfits together, fusing Electro, Techno breaks and Beats on 4 separate
tracks. With the likes of DJs Claude Young, John Tejada, Slam and Andrew
Wetherall already hooked on Iridite, this EP shows a potential that most
producers and DJs can only dream of today.

The artist backgrounds behind Iridite are highly impressive, with their CVs
boasting collaborations and releases on Sirkus, Finetik, 20/20 Vision and
Soma recordings with remix duties for Groove Armada, Aaron Carrol and Daniel
Ibbotson also, and over 10 years of producing Detroit influenced House,
Techno and Electronics.

TRACK LISTINGS : Iridite 001 EP

ARTISTS :TRACKS:
A :PEACEMAKER:PRECESSION
ORGANICA:MEDINA
B : REI LOCI:MELD
NEIU:PSIU

Opening Veto 1 is a jackin' tech naughty workout by Peacemaker. This cheeky
start up track is a perfect floor shaker to get groovin' to. 2nd track on A
is a more downbeat, chilled abstract number by electronic poet Organica,
definitely one for after dark hours. On the flip side B picks up the flow on
the electronic tip, with Rei Loci kickin in bleeps and beats and taking
techno to its limits with its ass shakin' knife edge drive. Finishing off
this showcase of talent is a track by artists Neiu bringing us a deep, dark
assortment of heavy static rhythms and smooth basslines. The whole concept
of this release is very workable, with tracks ideal from warm up to full
floor action all on the one EP, which is a rarity to find in this ever
competitive market.

Take note for future releases from this promising label and its artists, as
this is only the start.
Do not dare to overlook this! The EP will be distributed through Integrale
Muzique. 00 44 (0)121 550 6200

PLEASE RETURN MAIL OUT/ REACTIONS ASAP AND FOR FURTHER
INFORMATION ON THE ARTISTS INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT
CONTACT :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Fax: 0141 429 2106

There have been reviews in Jockey Slut and Overload magazine which have
been pretty positive so far- if anyone is interested there are snippets of
the tracks on Groovetech's site (do a label search for Iridite) and
juno.co.uk
Thanks for your time

There's at least one in the 'past shows' on http://www.betalounge.com/

Try searching Google, should be plenty more online around the place...
