I know it's hard to believe in today's exciting digital media world, but
some people actually collect vinyl.

In this case, a reissue makes the original even more valuable.

And yes, Index Man (the track) is perhaps his most famed and nuanced
dancefloor track.

[313] Digital Soul records press release (Blatent self promotion! Sorry)

2001-11-08 Thread stewart
Hi 313

Just to let you know that the first release on Digital Soul records is still
available from all good record stores :) Or from www.kudosrecords.co.uk if you
cannot track it down. The follow up is due out in January featuring a killer
remix from Holland's Duplex, sign up at www.digital-soul.co.uk for updates!

"While it might seem somewhat premature to award the first release on UK label
Digital Soul 'sureplayer' status, let's not forget that Mik Poynter, aka
Splinterfaction, has been making deeply emotive techno for years as Fat
Filters, and [this] continues his fascination with the soulful, jazzy end of
the Detroit sound. 'Paradisiac' is the kind of shuffling, sensuous groove last
heard on Ian O'Brien's 'Mad Mike Disease', while the rest of the EP comes
across like a slowed down version of UR's 'Galaxy 2 Galaxy' pilled up on
Prozac. It might sound like a cliche, but [this] is one of the best techno
records never to come out of Detroit."
Sureplayer * DJ Magazine 6-19 Oct

The aim for Digital Soul records is to release quality electronic music based
largely around the original spirit of Detroit techno, fusing man with machine;
cold electronics with human warmth, soul and plenty of funk. This is not to say
that the intention is to put out purely Detroit clones. Digital Soul comes
about from a 12-year love affair with the deeper, more melodic side of techno
from across the globe. At a time where unoriginal and uninspiring music litters
dance floors and record stores everywhere, we aim to put out music that will
warm the dancefloor and connect it with the soul through deep and infectious
electronic funk in its many forms.

Splinterfaction : EP No1 (DS01)
Release Date: 17th September

‘An incredible mix between Jazz & Detroit soul, really emotive chords and
funky basslines, including a pure Detroit techno track to hit the dancefloor.
The kind of record I would like to find more often!’
(Fabrice Lig – 7th city, KMS, Raygun)

A1: Doin’ it with a Prophet
A2: Paradisiac
B1. Theta Drive
B2. Musical Inrigue

The first release on Digital Soul comes courtesy of Mik Poynter who has
previously recorded under the name of Fat Filters for the sadly now defunct
Ugly Cutz, where he also remixed the K-Alexi Transmat classic ‘My
Medusa’. After a creative hibernation of some years, he now returns with
this incredible 4 tracker of deep, warm and infectious grooves, influenced from
a variety of musical sources, from Detroit’s Underground Resistance to
the hi-tek Jazz infused grooves of Ian O’Brien. Mixing a rich layering of
broken beats, spine tingling melodies, funky grooves and tight techno rhythms,
this EP presents a broad variety of styles, all joined by the deep underlying
funk of a man in touch with the underground. With the likes of Claude Young,
Fabrice Lig, Ian O’Brien and Delsin records already digging the groove,
this is just the first in a planned series of assaults by Splinterfaction due
on Digital Soul.

Take note for future releases from this promising label and its artists, as
this is just the beginning……

Distributed through Kudos Records.

Check out 'The Users and the Gadgets' compilation, this is wicked.

I had the fortune to see Marco Carola and Gaetano Parisio play live a

much bass my eyes were vibrating. Gaetano was pretty hard.

Re: [313] OT Gas,Sturm...?

2001-11-08 Thread Wes
I recommend Markus Guentner's recent album on Kompakt, In Moll, though I
find his stuff a little dense & even cloying in comparison to the Voigt
brothers' material in the swirly, symphonic mode.

For darker ambient stuff in the Gaseous mode, check out any of Thomas
Koner's solo releases, such as Aubrite (Barooni); Nuuk, on the Driftworks
box set (Big Cat); Teimo/Permafrost (Mille Plateaux); & Kaamos (also MP).

If you see it around, definitely grab the stunning collaboration Koner
did with Asmus Tietchens, Kontakt der Junglinge (a live recording made at
Lagerhaus, Bremen, in Dec. 1999), on Die Stadt (DS 34). If none of that
does the trick, go back to the things Wolfgang Voigt sampled in the first
place: Wagner, Mahler etc. Tap in at the source--which, more recently, of
course, is where the original Detroit techno influence continues to play
its part.

That reminds me, I was at the Sink's re-opening birthday last Sunday, and
whilst having a flick through 7"s I couldn't afford and would never see

about 10" long by 4 wide, and was apparently made by technics until about
1989. It looked something like a vinyl walkman... Anyone ever seen one?

2001-11-08 Thread Scott Everett
Yes, a couple friends and I bought one before we went overseas, so we could
listen to records in all those London shops with tons of 99p records and no
listening stationsworked like a charm! and we even had guys queueing up
behind us, thinking that the shop had suddenly changed their mind and gotten
a station! :P Definite conversation piece.
Anyway, it's a older 80s model boombox (Sanyo?) with a neat phono deck that
slides out of the front. About $200 used online (just do a search on Google
or such). Hell on batteries though:)

Peace,
Scott

Speaking of Esther, If any one sees her cover of "home is where the hatred
is" , I want it...

That reminds me, I was at the Sink's re-opening birthday last Sunday, and
whilst having a flick through 7"s I couldn't afford and would never see
again, I noticed the man selling them had a portable record player. It was
about 10" long by 4 wide, and was apparently made by technics until about
1989. It looked something like a vinyl walkman... Anyone ever seen one?
