Wes: These go deep too: SND: Tender Love (Mille Plateaux) Benjamin Wild: With Compliments (Forcetracks) if you're into their stuff (personally, it doesn't do a lot for me) there's also the new cd from Deepchord. not sure when it'll be pressed-up, but it's only available from their website (http://www.deepchord.com) and they're taking orders up to the end of this month. something else which is also due out soon is "Mixed-Up In The Hague" Vol 2. [EMAIL PROTECTED] used to be subbed on here, but i dunno if he's still around to give us the latest on that one. maybe Otto or one of the other Rotterdam guys (Chris?) can oblige? the new Soul Designer lp (speak up Mr Lig!) on F Communications is apparently rather lovely, tho i couldn't swear to having heard it yet myself. it's not really Detroit related, but Boards of Canada "Geogaddi" is too good for words. rob ps: apologies for the glut of posts, but fear not - it's way past my bedtime, so this's the last one this evening. night all. _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Every Dog Vol 3 again...
henrique casanova: and i dont know if you guys will agree, but this 3° vol. is much closer to techno then the other two(thank god!!). at least in the drums.. i don't know that i feel quite right saying one record is more techno than another. to me, techno is *so* much more than just the "right" sounds and structure. it's difficult to put my finger on it, save for chucking around words like soulful and emotional, but there's a certain vibe running thru the tracks on Vol 3 that i'm a bit of a sucker for. rob _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Every Dog Vol 3 again...
...and on the subject of Detroit techno, my copy of "Every Dog Has It's Day" Vol 3 arrived today. i've only played it the once, but i've gotta say it's the best thing i've heard from Mills on Axis in feckin ages... perhaps since Humana. if you're into Mills' more subtle and less pounding moments then you need to check this record out. regarding the price, it's pressed on 2 lovely fat heavyweight pieces of vinyl! i don't know if that accounts entirely for the price hike, but it might have something to do with it... after all, Warp are due to release a v.expensive (40 quid!) pressing of Aphex's "Drukqs" lp which is apparently being manufactured at some bad ass plant in California. from the Warp site - "4 discs of highest grade vinyl (the best audiophile vinyl available, made at a single plant in California, with higher quality control and labour intensive manufacturing processes, and made of 100% virgin vinyl- not recycled) that will cost around £40.00." so, um, there you go. rob _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Los Hermanos
Jesus I can't believe how pointlessly nitpicking these comments are! Guys like Submerge have been tirelessly putting out great music for years and all you can do is moan about the samples one or two months before the tracks are even due out! I run a label and personally choose to put longer samples on the site, once the records are available, but you want to keep an element of surprise for when these things drop. I'm sure if you wanted you could spend a week visiting every other label's site and complain similarly about many more. Nobodys asking you to shell out cash right now on the back of these samples (although I have and should be getting the white labels next week:), but if they wet your appetite and build excitement to hearing more nearer the release date then what is the problem? And as for the quality of the samples, well not everyone has high speed connections and there still aren't many sites that record soundfiles for more than a 56k modem where you are bound to lose a lot of quality. I'm personally just glad that Submerge are making more of an effort these days with thier site redesign and mail outs to open thier sound up to more people. Come on, theres been more than enough crap spoken recently, lets get back to some sensible discussion and constructive comments. Those kids! The crew is tight and funky, some effects and mixers, some gear but anyone who saw them live years ago, they used to have trunks and trunks of gear to travel with... Anyway the music was no less thick, interesting and some deeper stuff, trademark dark electronic funk style. Some improvisation from Danny Wang on the live Theramin (set up on the other side of the stage) on a couple tracks that was impromptu and interesting. It's clear unlike most people who goof around with Theramins, Danny actually knows what he's doing and can do just about whatever melodies and notes he wants, which was certainly impressive to me anyway. Danny leaves the stage and Ectomorph hits a few more cuts solo, trademark rife-shot tight snares and wobbly deep 808 kicks. They end with remake/remix/cover/tribute of Shari Vari with robotic vocals out of the glowing red megaphone vocoder and overall a nice tight funky set. Cheers all round. > >Danny Wang took to the decks, said a few words about Ghostly, fiddled with a uncooperative mixer for a pregnant pause and finally and dropped for an opener "I Believe In Music" (who was this, The Carpenters? Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell sisters!? ha ha). This gets my vote for most creative way to start a DJ set, though not necessarily most effective? Ha! He was mixing crazy stuff including Depeche mode's loving refrain 'this ain't no disco' (oh how true for the Empty Bottle) and having a good time, if a little rough here and there. Dropped Metro Area 3 and an assortment of what sounded like plenty of quality old electronic disco gems. A little rough on technique overall, but as someone who tries to beatmatch old disco and italo records myself (before tight sequencing and studio quantizing became the norm on late disco productions) it's definitely challenging to pull off seamlessly every time. I applaud the effort to play older cuts with newer!! Be on the lookout for his epic remix of Block 16's big cut "Elektrocution", I believe coming out on Nuphonic. > >Turnout could have been better for this caliber of talent at Empty Bottle, which is historically a bar for live indie and irony rockers, recently starting to book more "electro" (god forbid they call it techno or house) and a crowd somewhat notorious for bowling shoes and no capacity (or skill?) to actually DANCE... but it was a Thursday and there was in fact a decent gathering of legit groovers getting down near the stage. Overall a nice night of electronics and bourbon worthy of a Friday work hangover, hats off to the artists and thanks to Ghostly for a Chicago presence. > >Cheers, >Matt MacQueen > > > > > > - >To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > - jenn without the -ifer -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] / [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- diyska.org / detroitska.com aim -- dubstylist - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Strange.. my copy on cd suddenly stopped working one day. Luckily i made a copy for my then g-friend and stole it back after we broke up ;) Same thing happened with my Ricardo Villalobos mix cd, which is not in a metal case. It was like manna from heaven > for my 15-year-old ears... and it's a shame that it's not on Kiss anymore, > but that's just the way terrestrial radio is going. It's a distant memory in the US as well. Most college radio stations in the US have included at least one dance music specialty show in their lineups since at least the 80s, and this was precisely what drew me in to house/techno, and DJing. I lived near and worked for one of the highest rated college radio stations in the US from '92-'97, and I can tell you our funding was completely inadequate to reach a broad audience. We transmitted at 100 Watts, which had a broadcast range of approximately 10-15 miles depending on the weather. We had an extremely devoted General Manager at one point who attempted to increase our transmission range to reach the next largest audience of approximately 130,000 people, 25 miles away. We were able to secure funding to afford a transmitter to broadcast that distance, but the FCC licensing fees for broadcasting for greater distance were prohibitively high. So... we wound up with a very powerful transmitter and the same tranmission radius. Six years later, they still have not been able to raise the funds to acquire the new license. And again, we were one of the the best funded, most highly regarded college radio stations in the US, and the first college radio station in the US to go digital. We were the 2nd largest student organization at a university of 30,000 students, but when a Big 10 college football team can generate so much more national exposure for the university, it's no wonder that a non-commercial radio station will lack the support to reach a wide audience. The rules on retaining that non-commercial staus allow some flexibility to generate revenue through underwriting, as opposed to advertising, but at that point you are inherently marketing to a small business audience at small business prices. Simply put, it is the FCC that has allowed college radio's continued existence in the low bandwidth range of our dials, but it's very unlikely that college radio will reach a wide audience if licensing for transmitting greater distances remain so high. And given the recent attempts at killing NPR, I'd say that is not the direction things are headed in. None of this really considers profit motives at state-run universities, which is whole different ball of wax. This impact is so great that the University of Iowa has even considered privatizing itself. And none of this touches on the FCC's strict crackdown on pirate radio in the mid-90s. All this said, I considered myself extremely lucky to have worked for http://www.uiowa.edu~krui Visiting staff from other colleges would drool at our professional mixing board, production studio, staff offices, record archives, and even the transmission range I was complaining about above. That I was allowed to maintain an underground dance music radio show for five years running, continuing a legacy and leaving my own is nearly miraculous in its own right. College radio has been the only salvation on American airwaves for some time now for the devoted audiences that tune in. Most kids start their musical education by flipping the dial, be it radio or television. Without college radio, things might be more bleak than they are now. Wiht few exceptions, public access television does not appeal to a younger audience. Laura Gavoor has oft noted the impact of major corporate ownership on American radio. Andrew Duke also had some great posts on this topic a while back. He's still running that radio station in Halifax, still organizing his annual fundraisers. :) Searching the archives may prove instructive. [313] Techno on local radio
I think that the increasing lack of techno music on a lot of terrestrial radio stations reflects a migration of "specialist" listeners away from terrestrial radio as much as it reflects the narrow tastes of programme commissioners. The advent of internet radio, mp3s and so on has provided specialist listeners with an array of alternatives to local radio, and (just like classical music fans when CDs were new) the specialists seem to have been the first to jump. In fact, very few people I know listen to terrestrial radio at all anymore - even those who don't have net access (or at least, no access fast enough to be downloading music) will be picking up burnt CDs from high-bandwidth friends. It's not just with regard to techno - most radio stations in the UK are rapidly homogenising, and stations that actually *sell* themselves on their general blandness (Heart FM, anyone?) are starting to prosper more than ever before. A radio station will get most ad money if it has a lot os listeners, and the way to get more listeners is to play the more popular music. A harsh fact, and one that would bother me immensely if it weren't for the huge amount of underground music available at my fingertips (and indirectly at those of everyone who knows me) removing the need to go to terresttrial radio for my music fix. I remember Kiss FM back in 1991, when there were both Colin Faver *and* Colin Dale - two evenings of techno a week! It was like manna from heaven for my 15-year-old ears... and it's a shame that it's not on Kiss anymore, but that's just the way terrestrial radio is going. RE: [313] Maurice Fulton again
What was all that about with the Australian immigration then? As far as I understand, he went back ot NY intended temporarily only to discover his girlfriend (mistakenly?) had assumed he'd been playing away from home (which was true in one way) ... anyway, she'd destroyed a lot his records ... then Australia refused him re-entrance and impounded his belongings including his records ... last time I heard it was not certain that they'd be returned, can't think why that would be. Am I right? If so why? >-Original Message- >From: Cyclone Wehner [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Saturday, March 09, 2002 9:04 AM >To: 313 Detroit >Subject: Re: [313] Maurice Fulton again > > >He lived in Melbourne and is now back in the States. >-- >>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>Subject: Re: [313] Maurice Fulton again >>Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2002 3:24 AM >> > >> >> Last I heard (read) Maurice lived in Australia somewhere >(Adelaide?) but I >> think he is often in the UK as people have mentioned seeing him dj here a >> few times recently. Not nowits all ragga/hip hop/uk 'garridge'/r n b theres little apprieciation of the the techno past in this city... Back in the very early days a lot of the pirates in Leeds would play techno/house, but at that time the electronic scene was just starting to emerge up here with contributions from Leeds/Sheffield and Manchester, (all having a heavy industrail past incidently) and all that early stuff on Warp and Bassics when it was all bleep and bass... sorry veered O/T > -Original Message- > From: Odeluga, Ken [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, March 12, 2002 8:29 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org > Subject: RE: [313] UR on Kiss FM > > Take note UK members, 'Kiss FM In Not Naff Shock' - that was then. [313] Detroit techno thesis
Dear 313, I have recently (today) finished the rough draft of my thesis on Detroit techno. It deals with some of the things that are brought up so often on this list, particularly race. I interviewed some incredible people including Dan Sicko, Brendan Gillen, and Anthony Shakir, and I dug through a lot of old archives and microfilms. It can get kind of theoretical at points, but I guess that's the way it goes with academic work. Still, I did my best to make it readable. Please consider this my contribution to the many threads on techno and race. And if you feel like it, let me know what you think. I'm open to revisions and suggestions. http://www.umich.edu/~btausig/thesis.htm sincere thanks to everyone, ben tausig - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Rock To The Beat[313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation
I do have the vinyl pressing for this release, which was on Wing Records/Polygram. For curiosity's sake, I've enclosed a tracklsiting below. To my knowledge, there was a 2nd volume with the same title as well, although I couldn't tell you what is on it... a search of cddb.com might be able to reveal that, for whomever is interested. [313] Neil Rushton [313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation
Hello, Neil is still in the music business. His latest accomplishment was getting Blackwater by Octave One licenced to Concept Records and helping it hit #2 in the UK. Take care, mt Also, this compilation was compiled by Neil Rushton. But what is he up to these days? Is he still in the music biz? i thought so, he did 'six to six' after that, next to some irregular network repressings. nowadays - not clear to me _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] A heads-up for anyone who owns the Basic Channel CDs
If you've got one of the Maurizio/Basic Channel discs that came in little aluminum box, either burn a back-up copy or stick it in a proper plastic jewel case. The metal ring that's meant to hold the disc puts a serious strain on the hub of the CD . . . my Maurizio compilation from 97 snapped in two just as I was getting ready to rip it to hard disk tonight. It'll make kind of a nice coaster I guess. Will go well with the second 12" of that Stacey Pullen album that fell from my balcony and into a bush a while back. -- Brian "balistic" Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] Rock To The Beat[313] TECHNO 2: The Next Generation
This Is New Beat was also available on Vinyl. I bought it used at recordtime out of curiosity about 18 months ago. Nothing particularly interesting, except for the fact the Renaat of R&S fame was actually behind that comp in a pre-R&S guise. I cannot tell you the label, as I got rid of the record in one of my "goodbye 1990's" record purges awhile back. The record really has no value outside of trivia. mt 101's "Rock to the Beat" was on "This is the New Beat" (can't remember the label - the tape is long-since lost), and I think it was just a cassette/CD release??? This very well may have been the Subway records release. I haven't seen my copy in at least 10 year though, so my details may be off a bit. [313] Ectomorph / Danny Wang gig in Chicago
My (overdue) comments on this Ghostly gig at Empty Bottle in Chicago last thursday w/ Ectomorph live and Danny Wang as DJ. Ectomorph played a set with a LOT of new material I haven't heard before, with less gear on stage and twin white laptops with the ectomorph logo glowing where the apple logo should be.
