The Last Angel of History (45 mins.) info: "Explores the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, space exploration & expanding computer technology. Posits science fiction as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation & otherness by exploring the work of musicians G. Clinton, D. There are 2 passages here that I find quite parallel to Detroit, from a collaboration perspecttive, especially the broad collaborations and rich "borrowing" of people for productions/labels sessions/remixes that really reminds of the formative early days of Detroit techno with the UR camps as centers of activity, plus all the happenings on Gratiot St. area w/ Metroplex, Transmat, Fragile, KMS, etc. etc. A lot of shared talent going on, people teaching and learning from each other. Here's an article released from Ananova about the news: Tributes paid to Fad Gadget star Tributes have been paid to underground music star Frank Tovey, who died earlier this week. The Fad Gadget star is believed to have died at his home on April 3. He played at the Swedish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) in Gothenburg on April 1, and was currently working on new material. In a posting on his official website, www.fadgadget.co.uk, Tovey said he was planning to appear at music festivals this summer. Daniel Miller, founder of Fad Gadget's record label Mute said: "Frank was the first artist I ever worked with on Mute, he made some very special and influential records and was an exceptional live performer. "Frank played a big part in helping to lay the foundations of what the label was to become in the ensuing years, I will miss him greatly." Fad Gadget was the opening act for the European leg of the recent Depeche Mode Exciter world tour. Alongside Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal, Tovey was at the forefront of the Electronic Movement of the late '70s and early '80s. -- ken meier interrupt media group [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.interrupt-media.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

BTW, Atkins will be having a release party for this 12 at Porter Street. (I believe the last Thursday of this month...) I live in London, but reading about things like the regular little Porter Street Parties in Detroit makes my mouth water more than Derrick May playing Lost ever could! > Yep. But as we know, events like Necto and Porter Street are the exception to the rule even in Detroit. You would think cities loaded with as much talent as Detroit, Chicago and (now) LA, the clubs would be awash with underground offerings. Look at how the Chicago house scene has shrunk in the last 5-10 years! In the US, New York is the only place I can think of that offers this. What doesn't New York offer in abundance??? But even when you have a number of weeklies to chose from, you'll still have your dissapointments in terms of crowd vibe, DJ's, venue/management issues, etc. It's really hard to put together a solid underground weekly... Speaking of N'Yawk... Hit me back offlist if any of you 313NYCers are up for hooking up at the Richard Bartz LIVE performance at Tronic whenever that's announed. I don't think I could handle missing that! Anyone seen him live since he started using a computer to produce? There's a stream from the March 30th Kurbel party in Munich here: http://www.kurbel.com/cgi-local/listen.cgi?stream=bartz_live The first few minutes sound really tight (gonna have to finish listening later). The soundbites from Spiralistic seem a bit more electroclash/disco than what I'd expect from him, but the man can do anything. I'm convinced. Re: [313] Warp Magic Bus Tour
And you don't think this is true for the US?! It is, and by far worse. Everyone I'd love to see are constantly being booked over in Europe. Suburban Knight is right from my hometown, but he plays overseas more than he does right here in Detroit! ---> Maybe that's because he resides in Belgium for a couple of months a year... It's depressing. There are many promoters here that would love to bring people in, but because they are "underground small-atmosphere" functions, they just don't have the money to do it. It often is that no one here cares. People here care about what's on the surface, the commercial attraction. People like Sasha and Digweed, DJ Irene, DJ Skribble, Darude (your basic lame ass shows) are booked in Detroit and in the US, thousands of people will go to those shows. But if someone like Claude Young came and played Detroit, the turn-out rate would be a lot less. Commercialism is HORRIBLE in a capitalist society, things take much longer to evolve. In Europe you have many electronic music festivals and events I would love to go to, there's only a few here that interest me at all. ---> All sounds very familiar, but here you would at least have a decent turnout for Claude Young. My main point is that - as Tristan put it - the grass is always greener on the other side. Lots of US folks think Europe is heaven, but that often isn't the case. Just trying to save you the disappointment I guess. Besides it's up to everyone individual what he/she is looking for in the nightlife. John >>> It's how some promotors try to get money out of every single aspect related to a party. It has nothing to do with music anymore. Another frustration on my side is the fact that almost nobody (mind though, there are exceptions) dares to take any risks anymore: always the same names on the flyers.>>> >> > > You US folks (and other) just enjoy the small-scale underground >atmosphere; > > here everything is turning so commercial. [313] digital copywrite and how it effects you.
I'd like to bring a very important issue to everyone's attention. My appoligies if this is a repeat topic. http://saveinternetradio.org/ In the meantime, We've spoken with the guys from saveinternetradio.org. Turns out they are in chicago, where my partner, Dave Meeker is from. We told them that we were in for the fight and had some pretty strong punches we would be throwing if the chance arose. I republished the article that Kurt wrote, and added banners to the Selekta Web site that link to the article. you guys... while we are lucky to be in the music industry that we *are* in (more underground, etc)... there is still a chance that any of the copyrighted materials that we play online could lead to us paying a fee retroactive to october 1998. Now... PLEASE NOTE: the cost is not 14 cents... it is .14 of a cent per song per listener. Regardless... it is a crime and NEEDS to be stopped. Regardless of how this effects the selekta, it will also effect other sites that are run by our friends, sites that support the music that we make and promote. Please... read up on the legislation. And take 10 minutes out of your day and spend 5 bucks in long distance and CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN! PLEASE? Explain to them that this is going to kill all small businesses... This is very, very, very, very important... and as we in selekta land claim to be "proactive " and "defenders of the scene"... well... THIS MIGHT be more important than anything weve come across thusfar. Please make your elected officals aware that we know about these laws and don't approve of their far reaching scope. It is not that people should not get paid for what they have done. Rather, it is that you should not put in laws that have no limits. Did you know that according to the DMCA, that all digital devices will/are now required to have copy protection features built into them. In other words, you will have to pay for an alarm clock which comes with digital copy protection built in. Does this law make sense to you? What is goin on now with CARP is the natural extention. CARP is not the problem. The problem is the DMCA. CARP is just a symptom of the problem. We need to address DMCA to keep future CARPs from cropping up. If any of you have questions... please feel free to ask. just drop us an email @ [EMAIL PROTECTED] We hope to bring as many people together to support this issue. Re: [313] Europe/US Electroclash Magic Bus rant
what about starting a direct debate - the meaning of "underground" 2002 ? and what this so often used word means to people here ? - and now again a bit of drifting - I think the fashion statement also was interesting to the underground-question in general, because it´s true that most music "categorys" connected with youth-movements also were connected to specific youth-fashion-rituals (the techno-movement in europe was also connected with certain fashion styles) and many culturez include the aspects of decoration, presenting sexuality, beauty, beauty-resistance, body politix, body moves, dancing styles ... - participation and connecting the full range of communication aspects... mixed with the nightlife aspects Though I also do think, that many conclusionz of "pop"-analyziz based on the observation of a short decade in history (from 50ies to 90ies) are not as timeless, as they pretend to be and things have changed a lot "loss of innocence" - as we live in a time were many people in the "civilized world" can get almost any "image" or style home on the computer with a simple mouseclick - this is the reason why for example the senile glamourizing of the uncoded neo-80ies-nu-wave-style is yawn galore to me (most of it is obvioulsy created on the background of too lazy copied strategies of pop and pop-models (mirror-images) for selling more records) I think this level of "cleverness" can hardly feed any movement (underground or whatever) with substance - blub, sorry - it´s late and it´s in english and where was the 313-link ? ohem: Underground Resistance ? yes - what means underground to you ? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The main difference I can see is that the underground actually exists throughout most of continental Europe and parts of the UK, where there is little to no scene whatsoever in most of the U.S., save a few larger markets and Michigan/Ohio. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :) That said, I got over my "grass is greener" syndrome a while back. I think clubbing is an inherently frustrating experience. I'd number my dissapointment to enjoyment ratio at about 3:1, and I don't even go out that much. A good local deep house scene keeps me going if I feel the itch - that and the one trully underground weekly that focuses on electroclash/IDM/techno/ambience, which keeps me sane, even if on a Sunday. On that note, if anyone's coming down to Baltimore for the oncetwice festival, you should think about stopping by Filler on Sunday for Sutekh, Safety Scissors, Tomas Jirku and Richard Chartier in Adams Morgan, DC. Only about 40 minutes away and it's free! If you're gonna come, it's a small place so get there early to find a couch (there isn't a dancefloor). I adore this place. POPS "Filler...the most cutting edge stuff you'll hear in town" - WASHINGTON POST APRIL 7, 2002 * * *GUESTDJ . SUTEKH* (San Francisco)http://www.context.fm Since 1997, Sutekh has released consistently inconsistent electronic music on local and international labels Force Inc./Mille Plateaux, Source, Background, Plug Research, Cytrax/Delay, Tektite, and his own Context. Manipulating computers, samplers, synthesizers, ping pong tables, Scrabble pieces, and found sounds, he has created everything from minimal house and techno to dense, dissonant noise collage. Unable to explain his reasons for making such music, he blankets himself with sarcasm. People often have a difficult time deciding whether or not he is serious. Sutekh established Context Free Media and its associated record label in 1999. *GUESTDJ . SAFETY SCISSORS* (Berlin)http://www.context.fm + http://www.proptronix.com The boundary between 'artist' and 'geek' is fine, yet frequently unacknowledged or concealed by overzealous intellectuals. MPC (i.e., Safety Scissors) does little to hide his social awkwardness in the quirky techno he produces and performs. Although he is the ultimate dork debonair, MPC does not over-obsess with the computing process. Singing on his latest works for Force Tracks and Plug Research, MPC experiments with camp techno. Upcoming releases on Carpark and his own label Proptronix similarly pervert techno formula with an electric ukelele and bubble gum. Currently residing in Berlin, MPC is working on his next album for Plug Research and a collaborative project with Kit Clayton on Carpark. - MPC has an abstract and clumsy approach to making music and distinguishes himself from the intellectualism of abstract/minimal techno. The proud drop-out of the art school establishment pursues neither expressions of unmediated human feeling found in Abstract Expressionism or regimented lines of stucture in minimalism. Rather, with subtlety and smoothness, he references both in his unique sense of sarcasm. *GUESTDJ . TOMAS JIRKU* (Toronto)http://www.yirku.com Tomas Jirku has quickly established himself on the international minimal techno scene. Jirku's unrelenting, unpredictable explorations have since been released on such prestigious labels as Force Inc., Klang Elektronik, Alien8, and Traum, to name only a few. _A crowd pleaser with every live and DJ performance, Jirku is sure to treat the audience with his latest developments on the leading edge of the minimal techno movement, mixed with his own brand of techno nostalgia. Despite the visual limits with entertaining an audience with a laptop, Jirku manages to hold the crowd's attention with his upbeat mixes. He's even been known to throw in his own one-off remixes of dance music classics most of us are embarrassed to recognize. By the end of his live sets, the audienc
