Far funnier are the denizens of ANY country whose minds run the simplistic
avenue which allows them to begin any statement about all inhabitants of
any country, or creed, race, nationality, etc. and assume they are making
a point with it - other than indicting themselves as being simplistic.

According to Shure's web site:

"It is true the SM57 and SM58 microphones are based on the same cartridge
design. The main difference between them is in the grille design. The SM58 was
designed for vocal application and it uses a separate grille with a very
effective pop filter. The SM57 was designed as an instrument microphone
where smaller grille size is preferred. In this application the pop and wind
are not usually a concern. The SM57 uses an integral resonator/grille
assembly, where grille is actually a part of the cartridge. These two grille
designs place the diaphragm of the microphones in a different acoustical
environment. First of all, the distance from the top of the grille to the
diaphragm is significantly shorter on the SM57 compared to that of the SM58.
This allows for closer sound pickup with even more pronounced proximity
effect. Secondly, a different resonator/grille assembly design of the SM57
is responsible for its slightly higher output above 5 kHz."

Google searches: try them some time.

[313] UGE-02

2002-07-01 Thread jurren baars

just saw this on eBay:
theo parrish - UGE-02 the follow up to the 'slowely surely' remix [with made
in the usa - never gonna let you go re-edit on the b-side] has anyone heard
this? i've heard a cd-r with a re-edit of the dells - no way back a while
back that theo did, is it on this 12"? or has theo gone for the ultimate ron
hardy re-edit: isaac hayes - i can't turn around? [as it seems to me, mr.
parrish is extremely influenced by the likes of ron hardy and farley
jackmaster funk. just listen to those mixes on deephousepage.com, and you'll
hear a lot of records that theo now plays aswell.]
does anyone know where i can find this? i'm tired of e-mailing every record
store in the US to get hold of records like these [still looking for UGE-01]

2002-07-01 Thread plaztikjezuz
almost forgot the 57 and 58 are primarily a live mic.
you will find the 57 used inthe studio a lot, but as a
cabnet mic or drum mic, they sound great on guitars and
snare/tom drums.

if you want a mic for studio use, I would suggest
something else. even though they would work fine and do
the job, I would get a condenser mic instead of a moving
coil.

a question very simular to this just came up on
313techknow list and I suggested a marshall electronic
mxl2001p condenser mic. it's a great mic I had a guy
demo one for for me.

he put it up aginst neuman u87 (which is top of the
line, 4 grand easy, dont make anymore, etc.) and the mic
sound almost just like the neuman set in a carbonoid
pattern, but this mic is under $200, and if you buy one
now they will throw in a different mic for free.

Re: [313] shure

2002-07-01 Thread scotto
the major difference is the polar pattern.
the 58 has a wide pattern and the 57 has a narrow one

what this means is one is better suited for singing (58) because if you move
a little off axis of the mics zero you will still get picked up just fine.

but both mics are vocal mics the 57 is just used more for micing cabnets and
drums and anything thing else like a sax.

bands who use the 58:
the who (instantly comes to mind)
koko taylor
the cure

bands who use a 57:
tom petty
I cant think of any others off hand

but you get my point you cant tell the difference

Hey guys just a quick question..

What is the difference in the sm 57 and sm 58 mics?
Sonic, clarity, voice and from the recording of instruments and sound
response?

They are only a few dollars different in price, but it seems that the 58
maybe more for vocals while as the 57 is for both vocals and the recording
of sound.

Please tell me which one you prefer and i will base my decision on your
opinions!'

thanks and cc me in on the reply emails.

[313] July 4th

2002-07-01 Thread Chris Dooley
So me and this guy were sitting and having a little debate and here is how it
sort of went though very narrated. We had this debate at a party of all things.

We were discussing the 4th of July and the meaning behind it.
It is my understanding this is the day back in 1776 that we declared
independence from britain and their high taxes, etc etc...
Thus the declaration of independence and soon after the constitution were born.

Now i studied history some in college but i am not a history buff, but my
friend put this scenario to meas he proclaims to some what be a history
buff

Now i know that people like to have an excuse to party and that is fine, but he
questioned that a lot of people just celebrate holidays without even thinking
about the meanings anymore, which makes sense. but he told me that the reasons
behind us fighting the british back in the day were justified as there laws and
tariffs were tyrannical, etc etc.

He goes on further to tell me that the many of the "reasons" we ended up having
the revolutionary war back then are not only in effect and law now but are
worse in the present time (brought on by the us govt and big business).
Reasons being things such as percentage of income to taxes, privacy, owning a
gun, and basic freedoms, etc etc

He says that we had many problems including that back then the british wanted
5% of everything we earned to go to them, yet now we pay close to at least 25%
or more of everything we earn in sales taxes, income taxes (which are stolen
from us before we even see it), property taxes, estate taxes, etc taxes.

So my question and wonder is this is the us govt more oppressive now than
the british govt was back in the time of the revolutionary war (and thus the
birth of the holiday of July 4th) and is the holiday just a spoof of celebrated
so called independence and freedom? What are your thoughts?

Now i know we do have it better than some countries believe me, (of course
there are many that are "more free" with different social system structures
that do just as well economically) but i am wondering if all those years i have
celebrated "freedom" (as i was taught and learned) has really been just a waste
brought on by the propaganda of the traditional american holiday in general?
And is all this money i and many others spent over the years on fireworks and
barbecues etc etc, though put to good use and fun and i do not regret it
(hee-hee), been just a waste of our resources to celebrate something that
doesnt hold as much truth as it used to?

If anyone is a history buff maybe they can shed some light on this, or maybe if
u just have an opinion?

And to keep this somewhat on topic what is everyone doing for July 4th.?
And though i question the logic of the holiday (less than my friend) i will be
out in force with the grill and the new mix cdjust bc i like to party.

peace

d
