Saw him in chicago. Impressive skills, great fun, and interesting enough track selection, as well as being a downright friendly fellow. Carl Craig talks abut > doing an animation project with them on a CD-ROM > http://www.forcefield.org/craig.html Header was a CD/CD-Rom with 6 tracks that came out around '97 I think? It had a 2 1/2 minute Carl Craig track, that's really abstract but still 4/4. Also had tracks from Kirk DeGiorgio (sic - yes, I just sic'd myself), 4 Hero (I think), and the full version of Red Nail's 'Te Opus Diem', which was later reissued on Bombay on vinyl. The CD-Rom is lame but the music is very nice, particularly 'Te Opus Diem'. The version on vinyl is pretty crap sound quality, which always perplexed me until recently. When Miles Maeda came to talk @ Metatrack Studios here, he told a story about making this long track with Mark Farina, Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka that eventually got pressed with a weird pause in the middle b/c the only copy of it had been rescued from tape. You would never guess it from the Header CD, which apparently had a nice digitial edit and severe sonic restoration. Interestingly, Farina and Maeda weren't credited on either release. It's a brilliant track, probably my favorite track from Red Nail, which is really saying something in my book. From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [313] Am I the only person in the world I personally find much of thier techno pretty boring these days to be quite honest and whilst I dont profess to be any sort of authority on Mills or Hood these days I cant help feeling that their techno hasn't really moved on that much since the term 'minimal looped techno' was coined. I think it has. There's a great deal of difference between Hoods techno M-Plant material, his stringy Duet stuff, the Floorplan house and the Nighttime world sort of jazz-meets-classic-Detroit-strings. They all share Hoods' trademark sounds but there is plenty to distinguish them. Also, no-one has bit Rob Hoods style - he moves his sound forward (new M-Plants have almost sounded a bit DSP/treated) but you know its Hood at the helm and not some copyist, which Mills has perhaps suffered from (although thats not his fault). Drexciya - I haven't been as enamoured with their recent releases but then I still think their best track is the "Lego blocks" cut on the Glass Domain 12" which set the benchmark pretty high :) In fact the last thing by Robert Hood I was sent was his rendition of 'The Greatest Dancer' which was quite frankly awful. I've said this before but I love this track. I love the energy of it and the fact its a trademark clean Rob Hood production, dirtied by the live aspect and singing. Yeah the singing isn't in key, isn't well produced blah blah but its great to hear something totally different and its good to see someone with the balls to release something with a messy energy like that. Fabrice Lig I do not understand the deal with this guys stuff. >Nah, it's not obligatory to like Drexciya/Hood, just advisable! Hmmm, I've only ever bought 2 records by Robert Hood. Nighmare World Vol 1 and The Protien Valve EP, neither of which have been played for several years. The only records by Jeff Mills I've liked enough in recent years to want to own and listen to at home have been his Every Dog 12s and the Metropolis LP, in fact I haven't really been into his music since the very first Purpose Maker Stuff. I'm not sure how 'advisable' it has to be to like these artists. I personally find much of thier techno pretty boring these days to be quite honest and whilst I dont profess to be any sort of authority on Mills or Hood these days I cant help feeling that their techno hasn't really moved on that much since the term 'minimal looped techno' was coined. In fact the last thing by Robert Hood I was sent was his rendition of 'The Greatest Dancer' which was quite frankly awful. So there you go, I can, believe it or not, quite honestly and proudly profess to be a lover of good and pure techno who ignores most of the music that Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Richie Hawtin and many other artists currently put out. But show me something from Mike Banks, Matthew Puffett, Duplex, Delsin Records, Carl Craig, Fabrice Lig, Dennis DeSantis.etc..and I'll lap it up. I guess its just a matter of taste, One man's funk is another man's squaredance. On the topic of Minto's comments recently about Dan Curtin's recent return to form I can also confirm that he's due to drop a wicked remix on Digital Soul Records in the next couple of months (see below for details) and I have been told that there is some excellent unreleased stuff from him currently doing the rounds. I think we found him! Yes, it's only you Paul! :o) Nah, it's not obligatory to like Drexciya/Hood, just advisable! Not everything Drexciya does is good certainly, and the same must be true of Hood logically. And that doesn't even account for the question of taste. In fact, by very rough calculations, what might be classified as techno music accounts for less than a fraction of 1% of all popular music sales - so you're not alone at all in disliking Drexciya or Hood, or any techno artist at all! >-Original Message- >From: Paul Wise [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 8:22 PM >To: 313 mailing list >Subject: [313] Am I the only person in the world > > >Who doesn't like drexciya or robert hood > >I find them all too samey, too fasat > >Don't get me wrong I know they r quality they just son't do it for me > > >- >To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sounds nice. Not meaning to be arch, but do you guys regard Rob Hood as part of the 'house' rubrik? That's interesting 'cause although most would recognize the points of commonality, many here would see at least a genre distinction between 'house' and 'techno' (the latter camp being where most would place Rob Hood's brand of 4/4 dance music). k >-Original Message- >From: senslo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 2:57 AM >To: 313@hyperreal.org >Subject: RE: [313] Fw: Peacefrog Records special on BBC > > >For people in Sydney: we're starting up a house night >on Thursday August 29, and Inertia (Australian >distributors) are giving us copies of Robert Hood's >"Point Blank" album to give away on the night. > >I'll post more details later, but essentially it's a >$6 dollar night at the Hunter Bar in central Sydney, >featuring Declan Kelly from Melbourne's Honkytonks and >Research & Development and Simon Caldwell from >Sydney's Mad Racket. > >Cheers > >Chris > >http://digital.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! For people in Sydney: we're starting up a house night on Thursday August 29, and Inertia (Australian distributors) are giving us copies of Robert Hood's "Point Blank" album to give away on the night. I'll post more details later, but essentially it's a $6 dollar night at the Hunter Bar in central Sydney, featuring Declan Kelly from Melbourne's Honkytonks and Research & Development and Simon Caldwell from Sydney's Mad Racket.
