I recommend the Chris & Cosey remix album, Twist, which came out on T & B
in 1995. Mixes by Carl Craig, Fred Gianelli, Vapourspace, Coil Vs Elph &
others. Theres a review at http://archive.awrc.com/c/twist.html

You can probably find it second hand on cd (not sure about vinyl though).

On a quieter tip, this should be worth a look next week in the D:

Pan American, Radian, Signer (with Andy Greenman)
Thursday October 24 - Detroit - Shelter, 431 East Congress

These guys are on tour together all over the States at the moment. Check
www.carparkrecords.com for dates... Signer's new album Low Light Dreams is
out on Carpark and has been getting good reviews.

their crew to the decks. Rick Hopkins, who also DJs for Haywire, has been
>>spinning since the mid-nineties where he was a resident at Andy

renowned for his driving electro sets, Rick has a consumate repertoire, and

content, expect to hear some seriously dubby textures and grooves from Pole

Lee Berwick

An integral part of the LS Diezel soundsystem in the early nineties, Lee's
knowledge of dub reggae is second to none. His own Digidub project has
mutated from a debut LP in 1993 to being appointed by the Swedish
goverment
in 1998 to work with avant-garde Butoh dancer Su-En on a project called
"Scrap Bodies", the end result being a CD recorded entirely in a Swedish
scrapyard. More recently Lee worked on an aural project derived from
sounds
taken directly from the River Thames, which was later shown museums around
the capital. He has remixed work for the likes of Funki Porcini and
Dreadzone, and has toured/DJ'ed extensively over the whole world.

Dub-Sounds

After Plant43's praised debut performance last month, we are happy to
welcome yet another debutant, this time Jamie Croyden's Dub-Sounds
project.
Jamie's main influences are drawn from the traditional dub masters like
Perry, Pablo and Tubby, yet he maintains a healthy respect for the likes

(313) Fw: Stewart Walker : Degenerate

2002-10-17 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
He's dropped the S!

Artist: STEWART WALKER
Title: DEGENERATE
Label: PERSONA
Format: 12"
Cat. no.: PRS-008
Release date: 16/12/02

Stewart Walker has been a player in the electronic music scene since 1997,
when his first 12", 'Amphetamine Sulphate', was picked up by Sean Deason's
Matrix imprint. Stewart's path into music grew from an early obsession with
British bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Lush, although an avid
interest in the British music press steered Walker's interest towards early
electronic pioneers like 808 State and LFO - and the output of the fledgling
Warp and Rephlex labels, amongst others. His eyes opened to this
proto-techno sound, and early forays into music production followed, along
with a growing awareness of US based artists pursuing a similar direction.

Following a handful of single releases, Stewart's debut album - the tonal,
groove-orientated 'Stabiles' - was picked up for release on Mille Plateau.
For many, this was seen as Walker's entrance to the world stage. His work
continued, gracing labels internationally, including Force Inc., M_Nus,
Tresor, Rampe D, Tektite and Mosquito, but it wasn't until 2001 that he
established the 'Persona' label, where his production style came into it's
own. Stewart's sound matured - taking on an increased intricacy with the
addition of new sonic layers. The label also came with a new agenda:

Metaphors of machines were once necessary to discuss electronic music. In
2001 we are no longer 'the robots.' Instead, techno has become the most
personal form of expression in today's musical spectrum. One person. One
studio. Customizing rhythms and sounds that honestly represent his or her
vision.

Persona Records is about rebirth. Consider the history of electronic music
but with no greater emphasis than the history of all music. The sealing of
the 20th century archives allows us closure. Perspective. As the distance
increases and our memories convert to fiction, new mutations of the form
will arise.

A1. Dead People Fight Back
Kicking off with an almost two step flavour, this extremely melodic track
has plenty of elements to get your ears round, without being awkwardly
challenging.

A2. Instrumental's Greatest Hits
Stewart takes us on a slow stroll through some deep bass textures and
subterranean static. A more restrained, home-listening ambiance.

B1. Mysterious Rural Past
More uptempo and techy, but still swimming in a dublike atmosphere, and a
structure caught in a tug of war between the linear and an offstep skank.

B2. Leaf Cutter's Practice
A straight 4/4 piece but, as with the rest of the work on this 12", it
possesses a subdued quality which steers it away from more traditional club
material.

RE: (313) Throbbing Gristle

2002-10-17 Thread Sean Creen
Leaving aside the utter heresy of your opinion on 20 Jazz Funk Greats...
I'm guessing you probably liked the "straighter" elements of the album, in
which case you should probably investigate mid-period Chris and Cosey
material like Exotica.
There is also a recent Chris Carter EAR album with reworkings of TG rhythm
tracks which might be of interest.
BTW, 20 Jazz Funk Greats is far from TG's best work IMO, but is normally
quite a good entry point for people coming from a "techno" background. I
would recommend Heathen Earth or DOA if you want to dig a little deeper.

Sean.

What did impress me was the synth's and sequencer action, from the sleeve

and finally, does anyone have a copy of the Giorgio Moroder seminal

RE: (313) Throbbing Gristle

2002-10-17 Thread Cobert, Gwendal
I think this album is incredibly good, from the first second to the last...
but I can understand that someone with a background that's more techno than
industrial/experimental to be disappointed. This being said, Throbbing
Gristle, once they exploded, went in all sorts of directions, all of which
could be interesting for you :
- Genesis P Orridge went on to found Psychic TV, who had a trancey period
for a while, even if it wasn't their best ; try to listen to "Towards thee
infinite beat" (Mr Gianelli will probably be able to tell you a lot more
about them...)
- Christopherson became one half of Coil... everything they recorded is pure
genius to my ears, you should check "Musick to play in the dark vol 1",
gives an excellent view on their most electronic work
- Chris Carter and Cosey Fan Tutti became Chris & Cosey, they are the most
relevant for electro ; check out tracks like the classic "October", and the
double-cd comp recently released on World Serpent.

with these guys, it really is a matter of taste, so you'd better listen to
these albums at friends' / download some MP3s from the net before you start
hunting these releases... also be very cautious, because they released
hundreds of records !

(313) Throbbing Gristle

2002-10-17 Thread Jason Donnelly
Well I managed to track down the 'classic' Throbbing Gristle album '20 Jazz
Funk Greats' and to be honest, I was SO disappointed with 90% of it, but to
be fair it must have sounded amazing back in 1979.

What did impress me was the synth's and sequencer action, from the sleeve
notes these where down to Chris Carter can anyone point me to more of his
electronic work?, any recommendations would be most welcome!

and finally, does anyone have a copy of the Giorgio Moroder seminal
electronic album 'E=mc2', lots to offer in return. (cdr would be great)
