my car is full of hotmix 5 tapes d.loaded from deep house pages (and a
couple of tapes by a friend that's deeply influenced by the hot mix 5

LOST IN THE MIX

THE STORY OF THE ORIGINAL HOT MIX 5

by Rebecca Ortiz

You thought it was dead. You even mourned its absence. But whoever
told you disco died was lying. Well they weren't necessarily lying -
they were just misinformed. You see disco never died; it just
descended. Now you might be asking yourself what could the bellbottom
wearing, afro-fabulous, Saturday Night Fever-living-times
have "descended" in to? In one sentence? One of the greatest elements
of Chicago's history--house music.

Although it has been rumored that house music was to have been co-
invented in our sister city New York, make no mistake, Chicago's
style and sound combination took people on the wildest rides of their
lives and claimed an identity all its own. And although several
artists contributed to this advanced genre of dance music, there were
five individuals that laid some serious groundwork. Despite confusion
of the original team, the names of replacements and the vendettas
that surrounded the industry as a whole, these five remained strong -
strong enough to leave a severe dent in the city of Chicago. They may
not have parted "best friends" - or have even passed as business
associates-- but they made Chicago, house music, and the world that
surrounds that lifestyle what it is, as we know it today. These five
individuals were the premier DJ team in the world. Ladies and
gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the Hot Mix
5.

Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Mickey "Mixin" Oliver, Scott "Smokin" Silz,
Ralphi Rosario and Kenny "Jammin" Jason, all arrived for a meeting
planned by Michaels to discuss his idea for a house mix show. The
sixth interviewee, Jeff Davis, failed to show. During this meeting
they talked of this "team/corporation" they were forming. They were
the Hot Mix guys which was the generic term given to the group before
members were chosen by Michaels and after hours of struggling with
names they decided on the Hot Mix 5.

Chosen to host the show was part-time WBMX radio personality Armando
Rivera. It wasn't long after the 5 were formed that the show
developed a personality all it's own. "It's the Saturday Night Live
Ain't no Jive mix show hosted by Armando." Each week the switchboard
would light up with requests and comments about their favorite of the
5. Playing the latest in house sounds, Farley appealed to the African-
American audience, Ralphi to the Hispanic audience, Mickey and Kenny
represented the streets of Chicago and Scott the suburbs. For
scheduled guest appearances they would pack venues with thousands of
people, sweat would be dripping from the ceiling and sometimes the

there's some recordings of a Plastikman live set from Tokyo floating

Consumed.

Also- the Sickness CD single had a live version of Slak/Krikets taken from
the Spastic party. And I'm prety sure you can still buy it through Mute.

Somewhere I have a cassette recording of the Plastikman set from Tribal
Gathering that I got off of someone back in my tape trading by mail days.

The quality is pretty rough- but the set is ridiculous. Unfortunately- one
of the mechanisms in the cassette broke- and I haven't been able to fix
it. Can anyone help me out with a copy? (Never on P2P either)

individuals were the premier DJ team in the world. Ladies and

Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Mickey "Mixin" Oliver, Scott "Smokin" Silz,

planned by Michaels to discuss his idea for a house mix show. The
sixth interviewee, Jeff Davis, failed to show. During this meeting

people, sweat would be dripping from the ceiling and sometimes the
cops would come and close the place down for violating fire codes
with hundreds of people over-populating these events.

"Driving down Rush and Division [in downtown Chicago] on the weekend
was like listening to a giant ghetto blaster," recalls Michaels, "It
didn't matter what creed you were or what kind of car you had--
everyone had the Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive show on - it gave
me chills."

Their success seemed to be larger than life. They were in demand
around the city getting paid unprecedented amounts of money to play
an hour-long set. If they played a record on Saturday night, come
Sunday morning kids would be at the record store eagerly waiting to
buy it. But with all this good fame and fortune came trying times.

By popular demand, after only three months of on airtime as the Hot
Mix 5, a Friday night mix show was added. Now it was no longer the
Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive show but also the Friday Night Jam.
The months to follow would add the Hot Lunch Mix and also 15 minute
Mini-mixes throughout the day. The demand for the men was getting
stressful. Aside from turning in two weekly mix tapes for radio play
they were playing events/parties on Friday and Saturday nights per
their contracts with WBMX. Plus they were expected to live their own
lives. At the time Ralphi was only a freshman in high school.
Although the stresses were inevitable after four years on WBMX (1981-
1984) the show was about to reach a turning point.

Through the years, Michaels served as the "unofficial manager" of the
group. Helping the guys understand the technical side of their

(313) EFA is bankrupt

2004-03-03 Thread J. T.

Dear Business Partners,

with deepest regrets we herewith must let you know that we have been forced
to file bankruptcy today.

This is based on the developments of the recent weeks during which we have
tried everything to avoid this step by downsizing our staff, restructuring
all distribution methods and channels, negotiating with third parties,
particularly with several groups of possible investors, yet - sadly - to no
avail. All our attempts to find any other means to keep afloat in times of
collapsing markets have remained unsuccessful. Since it has not been
possible to reach possible solutions and it has become obvious that we were
no longer able to stay in business when relying on our own strength.

We expect the relevant court to name a receiver within the very future. We
do hope that jointly with that receiver we may be in a position where EFA´s
key business areas can be saved and restructured. However, it is unclear if
our desire to reestablish EFA will be rewarded by the receiver´s
perspective.

We thank you for all the years of cooperation and the trust in EFA.

Yours sincerely

one of the reasons I liked this (other than it's got some fackin' fat
tunes on it) is that it's not made up of what I'd consider obvious stuff

from that era. maybe to people like the ones on this list, we know the
songs, but gosh - how many times do we need to hear Dominator or Plastic

Dreams?! altho', there are some really noyce remixes of those tunes -
hehe. this coming from a person that has most all the R&S comps, most of

the early 12"s, etc.

2004-03-03 Thread Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks http://cognitionaudioworks.com

Am re-enjoying this album as I type this.
"Mystery World" is playing right now;
sends chills down my spine when it hits
the breakdowns (particularly after just
listening to Giorgio Moroder's From Here
To Eternity). Wow!
Still sublime 9 years later. One of my
absolute favorite releases on Warp Records.

Re: (313) edits

2004-03-03 Thread Matt MacQueen

edits edits edits.

the world went edit mad

here's why i like edits:

normally theyre pressed nice and loud now, so someone can make an
edit of an LP track that might have not sounded too hot in the mix
and it will be nice and loud and edited for mixability.

all true. Usually. The sound/mastering/pressing on some of the later
Ugly Edits however are crap-ola, and some of those originals aren't
that hard to find clean copy of. I mean come on, some of these sound
like they're playing in a felt shoebox. There are also good edits
and bad edits, a (re)edit of said great track does not automatically
make it's edit a winner, of course! There are lots of just kind of
boring ones, though usually it will tip you off to discovering a cool
original along the way you were unaware of.

ALSO, while i'm ranting, some re-edit types are getting really lazy
about the TIME of the edits themselves, like the whole point of an edit
(in many cases anyway) is to fix things and make it easier for DJs to
use them effectively.. whether it's to extend a break or accentuate the
cool weirdo synth squiggle line, or even drop a live player into the
mix or add a punchier kick to it.. the point is a re-edit that drifts
"out of time" to a sequence is just as annoying/challenging to mix with
as an original that drifts out of time.If you're going to drop a
classic into a program to add/subtract/sweeten it, can you at least
sync it up a bit, to a clock or put it on a grid so it doesn't drift
quite so much? I mean I mix old stuff all the time and it's drifting
off time like a coked-up live studio disco drummer without a
clicktrack... yes it's a risk but kind of fun (and scary) and a labor
or love to DJ with records you KNOW you have to babysit throughout the
entire mix to push it and pull it so the tempo stays in time. But
should you have to do that with any re-edit worth it's salt? Hell
naw... not to that extent anyway

Particular recent offenders: the Carl Craig re-edit of talking heads
'Once in a Lifetime' on Moxie (maybe it was an oldie done with tape
cutting so if that's the case i'll forgive... otherwise COME ON CARL
that thing is looser than the original!) And the Omar re-work of "set
it out" is pretty rough, you can actually hear where the claps were
meant to match up but double-up over each other, yikes. I'm not
expecting perfection, just more attention "if you gonna do it do it
right"... By comparision the 'secret mixes and fixes' and 'freestyle
edits' do a good job of keeping originally out-of-time things more in
time. Knowwhatimean?I guess "if ya want something done right, ya
gotta do it yourself" ;) [This was also a message on one of Danny's
old Balihu record labels]

and now someone edit this email by deleting it.

peace

I had the unfortunate experience of, while flipping through the TV channels yesterday, coming upon the video for Stevie Wonder's "Just Called To Say I Love You" from the absolutely horrid "Woman In Red" soundtrack (don't drive drunk and calling to say you love someone are great sentiments, yes, but accompanying them with clunky 1984 sounds don't work). Now, let me state for the record that Stevie Wonder is a HUGE fave of mine, I just don't have any *post*-1983 records from him! Anyway, that incident from yesterday lead to my listening to nothing but Stevie records so far
today
and I just had a second unfortunate experience that leads to this rant: STOP BASTARDIZING STEVIE RECORDS BY "interpolating" THEM! Why the anger?: well, here am I enjoying side 2 of Songs In The Key Of Life and track 1 is "I Wish"--bastardized by Will Smith for that bloody movie Wild West (I forget the exact title), and then just 2 songs later comes the most wonderful "Pastime Paradise"--bastardized by Coolio for his horrible rework. Taken separately, I was able to suffer through these bastardizations in the past when they came out, but having the
reminders rubbed in my
face within the space of 3 tracks this morning, damn, I almost feel Will
and Coolio

should be apologizing to anyone listening to Songs In The Key Of Life from now
on! :) Brings back another horrible memory: I had had a house/tech-house
residency at a local bar (313 relevance: Kenny Larkin's rework of Sade that I
got when Dan Bell was running the Seventh City store in Detroit with Kristie
Negro was a bit hit at this
residency) and Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" was a big hit at the time (not that I ever played it--ever--but the other DJs at the bar certainly
did).

So I played Stevie's "Pasttime Paradise" when someone requested Coolio during the
house/tech-house night (guess he didn't clue in to the theme of the night) thinking I could sorta
satisfy the request and perhaps educate a bit as well as keep the vibe I was trying to work with.
Well, I almost got beaten up! When I explained the Stevie-- Coolio connection, the guy did not give
a sh*t--he just wanted to hear his Coolio. Will Smith did the same horrible thing to a Whispers
record I used to love. Don't miss those days at all. Thank goodness Kanye West chops up and plays
around a bit with the Chaka Khan sample when he uses it on "Through The Wire" instead of
going for a rap-over-the-original rework. Whew! Not sure if it was sensible, but there's my rant
for the morning, Robert. :). Andrew Duke

here's why i like edits:

normally theyre pressed nice and loud now, so someone can make an
edit of an LP track that might have not sounded too hot in the mix
and it will be nice and loud and edited for mixability. plus it
helps resurrect older cuts that people might not know about
(especially when you were born at the end of the disco thing like
i was...). and it also helps some hard to find older cuts get a
rerelease and im all about things being in press all the time.

edits edits edits.

the world went edit mad

anyway, I got the "Magick Edit Allstars" 1&2, and they made a right mess of
the labels, 01 has the labels of 02 and vice versa.
(these are good edits btw I think, worth having, little extended bits, few
crazy fx etc). they made 'slicks' "spacebass" sound much better!

BUT, there's a track on there that I don't recognise that I'm trying to
find out what it is..
It's the 2nd track on the side that has two tracks on (theres only one side
with 2 tracks) and it's a killer boogie number that Mood II Swing sampled
for one of their best tracks. anyone know?

also, do you remember the Magick Kuts bootleg 12's that were about a few
years ago? I think these might be the same guys as them, but just doing
more boogie/disco tracks that have been famously sampled in house, as
opposed to the others which were more electronic oddities..

and, another thing, I managed to get an "Omar S 002" 12" - not listened yet
- is there "Omar01"?

that's it today, I promise.

knowing what he is up to will really help me plan my trip to the land
of euro in about 3 weeks. somebody please chime in with information as
to mr. larkins level of freshness.

Oh yeah... Incase people arent sick of hearing about Mills (ha!) he has
two new works of art out on Axis right now. I don't know about the
virtual Dj concept, but this actual DJ plans to rock the sheat out
of those new releases!!

Ahhh yes...spastik. what a moment in history. hot as fuk, both literally and
figuratively. all I gotta say is thank god I was right behind rich and the
whole set up with he rest of the gang when the DPD came through with the
pepper spray and that there was a rather large garage-type door behind us
all leading into the open air =)

I still have all sorts of souvenirs and mementos from that night, including
a "planet e" squirt gun.

and the transcendence parties...just as sick. especially the speedy j live
party in 1996.

those were the days...

There's a little coterie of folks out there who are still Derrick May's
pals, who's technical expertise he made good use of on those early releases,
without credit (with their agreement). It's not done 'em any harm. Always
useful having May as a patron.

A re-edit, in the original sense of the word, uses only the final
two-channel (stereo) recording of a song, which is then cut up, extended,
shortened, reversed, put through effects etc. These days this would most
likely be done in audio software like Pro Tools, Logic or Cubase, but in the
old days it would be done by cutting and splicing quarter-inch reel-to-reel
tape.

A remix, on the other hand, is generally done by someone who's been given
access to the original multi-track tape (in the old days) or individual
sounds, loops, samples, beats etc (today). The remixer can then use as many
or as few of the original building blocks of the song as they like, in
conjunction with musical elements created themselves, to create a new track
which uses any number of parts of the original.

The primary difference being that anyone with a copy of the record can do
their own 'edit', but to do a proper 'remix' you need the original producer
to provide you with the song's original 'building blocks' in isolation.

Cheers,

Tom

I've figured that edit is like a mix, shortened or lenghtened version of
the original tune without changing the main feeling of the original tune.
Radio edit is good example of this.

Remix on the other hand can sample the original house tune and put a
breakbeat drums. For example.

I need to get back up to Belfast to get to work the next morning and I don't

edits edits edits.

the world went edit mad

anyway, I got the "Magick Edit Allstars" 1&2, and they made a right mess of
the labels, 01 has the labels of 02 and vice versa.

PRESS RELEASE

FIRST PLASTIKMAN LIVE SHOW IN 9 YEARS
ANNOUNCED TODAY

Windsor, Ontario

March 2nd, 2004

Richie Hawtin announced today the first Plastikman live show on
plastikman.com. The event will take place June 3rd, 2004 in Montreal,
Canada as the opening event to this year’s Mutek festival (mutek.ca). It
will be the first live performance of Plastikman material since 1995.

Hawtin describes the show as a rare, one-night performance incorporating
multiple media with the artist controlling all parameters of the event.
As with his DJ sets, he will also involve unprecedented new artistic
technologies — all developed and customised for this show.

The following entities are partners in producing the show:

Mutek — www.mutek.ca
Derivative Inc. — www.derivativeinc.com
Crush Inc. — www.crushinc.com
Ableton, AG — www.ableton.com
Digidesign — www.digidesign.com

Turkish video artist Ali Mahmut Demirel, who directed the eye-popping
video for the ‘Disconnect’ (novamute/Minus) single, as well as new media
event producer/curator Kevin McHugh have both contributed to Hawtin’s
plans.

Previous Plastikman live shows have achieved almost mythic renown.
Artists, critics, and fans still talk about performances at Glastonbury
Festival, Tribal Gathering, and underground events in Detroit. In the
years since, Hawtin has increased his profile as a DJ and producer,
constantly updating, innovating and pioneering new technologies. The
current Plastikman album ‘Closer’ is out now on novamute/M-nus.

2004-03-03 Thread Robert Taylor
Oh yes, at Tribal Gathering '95 in the UK, and it was the best electronic live
act I have ever witnessed - I'll never forget it - it was quite hard and
acidic, as well as heavily percussive - he played a lot of his Plastikman
tracks like Spastik as well as F.U., Substance Abuse and even that Robotman
track.

2004-03-03 Thread Adam H
It rained _really hard_ that night. I thought I was going to get stuck
on the freeway. The gear he used seemed to take up a garageworth of
space. Definitely pre-mp3-ableton-ni-powerbook.

I remember Terry Mullen playing blackout right before the show started,
then silence, screams, lights on peoples clothing with sunglasses, drp,
more screams, music starts, graphics start on the video screen, total
craziness for the next ~40 minutes. Trancendence was very different.
It was on a floor of a skyscraper right there in downtown Toronto. It
didnt feel underground at all, very big event in a large open space.
No video screen to accompany the music but the speakers emitted an evil
red glow at points. The music had a tighter feel from the Spastik
show.

Geez that happened 10 years ago, I feel old.

Dang kids today with their music collections in little iPods and
studios in little notebooks. Why in my day we walked miles in a bad
part of town with 100 pound record crates, in the snow, barefoot, and
we liked it. If gear couldnt give you a hernia or put you in debt it
was no good I tell you. New fangled computers matching beats for you,
pffft:P

tracks.. :D

hi Adam-
I also caught him live for the 1st time in 94 at Spastik in Detroit
too (was it really 10 years ago? holy shi*t), but missed
Transcendence, which may have been even bigger? Pre-mp3,
pre-Traktor, pre-Ableton, it was nearly pre-Clinton for god sake. I
gotta give him credit it was a mindblower of a party, the complete
experience. I mean at the time it was about as literally as 'techno'
as you could get in the US, I still may even have the flyer somewhere
(how sad am I). There was a pile of live gear / rack / PA stuff and
then if i recall he played some records. There really aren't parties
like that anymore in the US, at that scale (and venue and volume) in
Detroit, that still have a very underground feel with that level of
talent and almost fetishistic overwhelmingly huge sound systems. I
remember his parents were in the crowd, and there were some contorting
+8 dancers up on speakers peeling off layers of lycra clothing? (do i
have the right party here?? yikes, it's all a blur, hahh)

I kept thinking we're all gonna spontaneously combust it was so hot,
packed in, everything was covered in black plastic and dripping in
human perspiration. The sounds themselves felt like they were
dripping, it was intense. I'm sure whatever he'll do now from a
performance standpoint will be completely unique and innovative as
that's just his style, he's not one for nostalgia just for the sake of
it. Especially with the near-freakish control he usually has over
every element of the parties, from technology, audio/visual setups,
wanting the latest of everything, etc.

I haven't cared for his last couple of albums (or straight
jackhammer-like direction of his DJ sets in recent years) as much as
his earlier more sparse material. The first 2 Plastikman albums (Sheet
One and Musik) I think are still much better than the new ones IMHO..
but frankly i'm still glad he brought back the whole Plastikman
concept to life. It's interesting and makes you think, whether you
love it or hate it. It probably all depends on if/when you got into
his music and what tracks you got into (or out of) first...But
anyone who can go to this live set will probably be in for the 'total
experience' -- it's no slouchy organization, every detail matters.
