thanks for the stream link. Claude had some pretty surprising things to say about our little city. http://www.claudeyoung.frequencyberlin.de/ , click on "Gastebusch". can't remember if I've sent this link yet or not, but I was sick of having nothing to listen to at work, so a few months back I set up my own streaming audio station. It's pretty informal but it keeps me entertained for 9 hours a day... http://65.27.86.149:8000/listen.pls if anybody checks it out I'd be curious to know what you think. - jobot - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 11:01 am Subject: (313) Claude Young's set from Saturday (listen) > > > > > check it out in streaming audio > > http://24.123.112.19:8000/playlist.pls > > in reference to my review of the event - I never really gave > enough props > to the promoters for their work on this event > they really are doing a fantastic, and difficult, job of trying to > makeMinneapolis a more techno friendly city > > sadly, the first track of his set didn't get recorded but the > Kraftwerkrework is in there > wish it sounded this good in the club - jobot gave a fairly clear > description of the sound quality in the club > that club needs to get someone in there that knows how to EQ for > technosince they are usually all hip-hop and rock bands. > > MEK > >

Re: (313) you listen to techno?
Out here in metro Phoenix, it seems that NO ONE knows what techno is. I listen to it all day in the office (along with some good deep house mixes) and listen to ghettotech and electro in the car around town. One of my co-workers described it as sounding like "little ants marching" (I was listening to "Rekall" on my laptop speakers) and another described it as "that music that's on all of the car commercials nowadays". I find that listening to techno is probably the one thing that keeps me grounded in Detroit. > > From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: 2004/06/15 Tue AM 08:24:51 EDT > To: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: (313) you listen to techno? > > > ...just started working with my current employer about a month ago. desk > job, cubicle, plenty o' coffee. anyway, there's a fairly relaxed policy > towards music in cubicles. as a result, i spend most of my 8hrs. with great > house and techno pumpin' out of my little PC speakers. naturally, this being > suburban america, i am the only commuter listening to the music of this list > for about 60 miles in all directions. >i get my fair share of raised eyebrows and cheeky comments from co-workers > that are not familiar with my "weird bass music". i'm all alone in a sea of > alarmist talk radio, and toby keith anthems. i'm just curious if any other > list-members are immersed in a similar environment. > > cheers, > lrh > >

check it out in streaming audio http://24.123.112.19:8000/playlist.pls in reference to my review of the event - I never really gave enough props to the promoters for their work on this event they really are doing a fantastic, and difficult, job of trying to make Minneapolis a more techno friendly city sadly, the first track of his set didn't get recorded but the Kraftwerk rework is in there wish it sounded this good in the club - jobot gave a fairly clear description of the sound quality in the club that club needs to get someone in there that knows how to EQ for techno since they are usually all hip-hop and rock bands. Re: (313) you listen to techno?
well, part of my last job was working in a mailroom and I got to play practically anything I wanted. I did't so much get strange looks from playing techno/house/etc. - more like it was playing some techno stuff followed by blues, followed by some rock band, followed by something like funk or "world" music, and then a bit of jazz. It was if nobody had ever listened to more than one genre of music. People were genuinely surprised by the diversity of music I was playing. And if anyone had the courage to talk to me about "electronica" (it was all the rage back then) they had to suffer while I explained the history in proper terms like house, techno, drum & bass, etc. ;D MEK

One time I pulled into a gas station in Utah to fill up my tank, with some Herbert or Mr Oizo track going loud enough to get a good back massage, and the attendant mechanic came running out of the garage because he thought something was wrong with my car. - Brian "balistic" Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno

"Beep beep - I'm listening to computer music" was something I heard quite commonly when I was in army abt. ten years ago. A bit odd, since nowadays the harthouse-tape I was listening would be classified as mainstream trance. Also, my classmates prohibited me to bring any music to parties in high school, which was nice. But this has drastically changed since - nowadays nobody comments even on plain noise. I want those cheeky comments too!

I work for a Techno magazine and get raised eyebrows for not wanting to listen to the commercial radio my co workers are all "okay with it". It's an unusual and distinctive sound, and familiar enough to a lot of us, but I can imagine a lot of sound engineers hearing it and thinking "hmmm, I need to do a bit of work here"... That's strange, because we (outlet) had the same problem when we put Scion on in London, the sound guy was a dick and kept playing with the EQs... May be Scion have this problem a lot? -Original Message- From: Tom Churchill [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 15 June 2004 11:45 To: David Beattie; 313 Subject: Re: (313) Glasgow > Then Scion came on, after about 10 seconds it was > obvious that the sound system couldnt handle the bass > they were trying to put through it - not sure if there > was a problem with the system or if it simply wasnt up > to the task, although im sure the Traxx boys know the > bass that the Basic Channel tracks have and would have > thought the sound system would take that into account. > Perhaps Tom can give some info on that? The problem was mainly down to the sound engineer in the room - the same guy who ruined the sound when Francois K played at the Arches. The system itself was up to it, and it sounded fine when we soundchecked earlier in the evening, but the engineer in his infinite wisdom decided to keep messing around with the EQ and the levels over the course of the night, and it just seemed to get worse and worse. This was a major disappointment for everyone, and Traxx have taken steps to make sure he's never in charge of one of their sound systems again. We were all very p*ssed off about it and apparently many harsh words have been spoken by the Traxx boys to those concerned... Apparently Scion are keen to come back later in the year, with Tikiman, and do the set again in a smaller venue with a sound system that will do them justice, so I'll keep you posted as and when I know more... Cheers, Tom

Yep, doing an 'arrange and process Emoticon/Headspace' live set :) Plus Joe Claussell in the other room... > How was it? Anyone go? It was a pretty good night, spoiled only by a pretty ropey sound system in the Scion room which didn't really do any of the music justice. The afterparty at the Unit was suitably messy, Max 404 rocked it and I carried on playing records until the mixer packed in... > Were they doing a live type thing, or just playing records with tikiman > toasting? It was a twin-laptop Ableton setup. But Mark and Moritz did come up with Tikiman a couple of months back to do the records & toasting thing... Here's some pretty good pics of me, Scion and Joe Claussell if you're interested: http://www.archstanton.net/g01/traxxmp0406/index.html Cheers, Tom
Re: (313) Glasgow
It was the Scion arrange and process thing Alex, not Mark and Moritz. There were a few of us there but I will give you my thoughts Tom was on first doing his own arrange and process of the Emoticon and Headspace back catalogue - obviously the room was quite deserted at the very start but filled up as Toms set went on, I really enjoyed it (probobly more so than the Scion thing but more on that in a bit) Tom certainly had control of exactly what he was doing and although the sound system wasnt the best he did what he could with it. Then Scion came on, after about 10 seconds it was obvious that the sound system couldnt handle the bass they were trying to put through it - not sure if there was a problem with the system or if it simply wasnt up to the task, although im sure the Traxx boys know the bass that the Basic Channel tracks have and would have thought the sound system would take that into account. Perhaps Tom can give some info on that? Listened to most of the Scion set anyway, which was good although I cant help but think how much better it could have sounded. Think they played a shorter set here than they have elsewhere around 1 1/4 hours. After that Tom came back on for a DJ set but there were only about 45 mins left and with everyone else heading off to the (secret) afterparty with Max 404 and others (including Tom again) playing. I decided to finish my drink and head off before all the clubs closed and I was left in the zoo that is Glasgow city centre at closing time looking for a taxi on me own. RE: (313) Super Audio CD
Well, they would say that wouldn't they - they're trying to make money out of it. Recently, Musical Fidelity did a recording of the same concert on three formats - analogue, digital and DSD for putting onto vinyl, cd and sacd. The results were interesting. SACD was only slightly better than CD, where as the best by a long shot was vinyl which was found to be quite erry in it's life likeness. The quote from the results was something like "If you prefer digital, then quite frankly you're deaf". I've listened to some SACD and a DVD-A players and they come no where near that to my AVID turntable (which isn't yet upgraded to what it could be) playing decent vinyl recordings. Funny really, that such an old and supposidly primitive method of music reproduction still sounds so much better! SACD is hardly the latest up and coming breakthough either. It's been out for ages and is thoughly struggling to capture the attention of the mass public. Truth is, few people really cares about sound quality. That's why Dixons can sell silly midi systems, or Mp3 has become so popular. Convience is everything to most people. > > > Ok - it's been kinda slow today so I figured I'd pass this > along. check www.tfunkshun.com/forum for reviews. It was an amazing night. -Original Message- From: Chris Anglesey [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 13 June 2004 18:41 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) TP in Liverpool Was anybody out there lucky enough to catch Terrence Parker at T:Funkshun in Liverpool, UK on Friday ? Unfortunately, I couldn't make it myself. Saw him play at the Feeling Moody 2 after-party during the Movement Fest; a living legend. It's a pity he doesn't come over to these shores more often. TP, if you're reading this, England needs you - please visit us more often !!! Chris.
