i'm also very excited about his Axis record. it should be a great fit for him, since the Spectral record has a rather Mills-ish feel to it. it has a very interesting quality to it - sounds almost surgical in precision, but like there's a thick cloth between you and the speakers. it's one of the very best Spectral releases imo. that was a "wild PA", indeed. it sounded like bad beatmatching at points (Traktor?), but the individual sounds still seemed to keep their own space. maybe it was done on purpose? - jobot - Original Message - From: Matt MacQueen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thursday, September 16, 2004 12:21 pm Subject: Re: (313) DJ Bone List > On Sep 16, 2004, at 11:16 AM, jason kenjar wrote: > > > PS> Also REALLY looking forward to the new release by > hieroglyphic > > being on the axis sub-label. (313) Need some help identifying a few tracks. (from Saunderson dj-set).
Hello, I'm new to this list, but a friend of mine told me this would be the place to be, to identify a few tracks I'm very keen on finding. They are from a Kevin Saunderson dj-set (@ Pulse festival... '02 or '03). I put an mp3 with the snippets online which matter. The first one was already identified by someone as 'Dirty - Dirty (e-dancer mix)', but (especially) the second, and the third one I'd really like to know more about, so I can go buy them. Local vinyl store didn't know the tracks either :( Here's the mp3's: www.deflect.org/Snippets.mp3 And for those of you who are interested in the whole interview, I made an mp3 as well: www.deflect.org/SaundersonInterview.mp3 Thanks for any help! (very) Well put Matt Jason Yussell... this is Josh Glazer, right? You lived in Detroit, moved to LA, work for Urb? Yussell, can we just call you Josh... ? I think Josh Glazer thinks it's his role as a budding (or, do i have to say 'established') writer for Urb that in the true tabloid-y, over-reactive, back-biting biting world of getting a name for yourself as a dance music journalist. Where you think have to piss everyone off for awhile by saying ill-conceived poison so everyone think you have some sack as a writer with your own opinions. In some ways I admire that, but mostly I don't, and I get so tired of seeing it played out. I'd call you a victim of the system... (Urb, enough said?) but that would be letting you off too easy. I'm sorry but i just can't understand throwing dirt down on people like Claude and Juan for some personal decisions they've made in their lives when they've contributed so much great music. On a 313 list no less. Without Juan you wouldn't be writing about techno.. you'd quite possibly have a different career/interests altogether. There are probably some detroit techno artists who probably don't pay their child support, owe some people money for bad deals, and have a substance abuse problem or maybe don't always put on clean socks everyday JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE POPULATION has at some point. Juan's award was for his contributions to MUSIC, right?? If he doesn't most deserve it in techno, WHO DOES in America? I'm not saying let's elect him to office, i'm saying let's recognize his contributions to electronic music. Do you have to try and take that away from him? We all have dirty laundry, i guess you just think it's your job as a journalist to duty-bound diss and publically air other people's on 313.Not every ounce of haytin' that comes through your head needs to flow into your keyboard. Please consider these kind of things before you moan about them on 313. It never ceases to amaze me. sweet. thanks for the info and looking forward to the reviews martin (secretly hating on you though :)) yeh i checked the last stinkworx release on delsin and a couple of the tracks are like that so I'm pretty sure it's down to his production techniques. also checking against the MOS rmx on the new one will say the same thing as they used a significantly beefier kick. doesn't make me like his stuff any less though. I'm a huge fan of his stuff. it just makes me more careful of what I mix it with, as it sometimes can sound like the bottom drops out if you mix out of a track with a tough ass bottom end. MAN! I think the (relatively) new stinkworx on delsin, aedena is the bomb. very emotional, moving techno. I do find however, that the bass doesn't come through as deep as I'd like though. I have loads of room to push the bottom end before I feel the bass pushing, and even more before I redline the mixer. is that on purpose? and on another note. Re: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'International achievment'
Yussell I take your point that none of us are "experts on Detroit civics." There are some people on here more than qualify to comment on this, but they're decent people and probably don't believe this is stuff for a public email list. I agree. >some European idiots How do you believe that the 'detroit techno economy' might stand up without the 'european idiots' that run labels, run clubs or just buy records? I think it might be f**ked, don't you? Certainly alot of American people tell me they don't sell hardly any records in America, or never get any decent paid gigs in America. And, lastly, re Juan. Isn't his job making music? As in it's his full time job? Does anyone talk s**t about what you do in your personal life outside work? In public? No, didn't think so, it's just not relevant is it? And we're not interested in your little hints, we would just like to hear his music thanks. Not what brand of f**king cereal he buys. It's a) none of our business, and b) just not interesting. I'm sure you feel real cool being in the know, but we don't give a f**k. We don't care. You stupid American skip-rat idiot. Well Martin, there's no explaining to some people (sometimes because they're incapable of listening!) so best let it be, is my feeling. In 20 years time, and beyond, more people will remember Juan Atkins - despite his undoubted faults - than will remember some embittered young man. k > > >On 16 Sep 2004, at 00:25, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > >> ok- >> >> i was keepin quiet, but this is a f**king travesty. >> >> what has juan done besides make some special records 20 YEARS AGO!!! >> >> derrick and kevin deserve this award, because they've put their time, >> energy and $$$ into making the Detroit festival happen. but no matter >> what >> they do, they'll forever be tied to juan- the man who couldn't even >> make >> his DEMF gig (and hundreds of other gigs) >> >> The man who as recently as this summer blew off throwing the opening >> pitch >> at a tigers game and i believe skipped the Metro times Motor City Music >> Awards after they flew him to Detroit to recieve a lifetime achievement >> award. >> >> Sure, the guy made some influential records. Man, your mouth is big enough for two rows of teeth :) Why are you so bitter Yussel? Why all the personal attacks on people? Are you so perfect? Take it easy and stop hating on people - it's not very becoming. This kind of stuff doesn't really get my back up but it's kinda sad that the techno world always has turn in on its own and we wonder where the new people are... Re: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'Internationalachievment'
dont get me wrong, if the award is for movement, then sure that's reason why kevin and derrick should get it and not juan. reading about the award, it seemed to be a focus on production/artistic output, something more broad than a single event. and juan's absence was presented to em as matter of location. if yussell is so clued in on everything, snidely dropping hints about knowing "the REAL reason", he should have shared that info and enlightened us all, so we understand too. but it seems to me if the focus was the effort and success of movement, the committee wouldn't have adjusted the award, they would have simply explained ala it was re movement 2004, which juan was not a part of. that explanation would have been fine for me, it makes perfect sense, there's no drama or anything there. calling people idiots for not knowing the supposed "real reason", and taking every oppurtunity to condescend to people who happen to really respect and enjoy classic detroit techno (on 313, crazy!), and taking the chance to talk sh!t about juan...ugh...who needs that crap.. -Original Message- From: "Thomas D. All because some European idiots with too much time on thier hands and a collection of ancient texhno wax felt that made them experts on Detroit civics. friggin shame --- Hi Yussel... First let me say you that if you can keep polited your post, it will be more valuable and respectable. In place of a 'Stupid European', let me explain you why your post is a total non-sense. 1/ Since 20 years now, Techno music is submited to us 'stupid europeans' as a style invented and developped by Mr Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. 2/ Money put into Movement by Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson is not the subject. Not anymore than Juan Atkins is present or not at some partys/events. 3/If you read carefully the letter writing for the guestbook in support to Juan Atkins, you will find the reach point of this support. Juan Atkins was excluded from this 'awards' due to his location. Not due to his participation or not to the Techno music in Detroit or anywhere in the world since twenty years or one year. 4/The recent efforts of Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson are totally respectable and we are (stupid europeans) in admiration on their job to keep Detroit Movement festival alive. Again, it's totally out of the subject. 5/They will be disgusted to share the award with Juan Atkins? Since the begining of Techno Music, they was not 'disgusted' to share the spotlight with the title of 'originators' and this title is certainly a part of their success and the 'international achievment'. Even if it's a minimal part. And again, BIG RESPECT to Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. And I'd like to remember you that 'stupid europeans' have done a lot for Detroit Techno. Do you remember labels like Buzz Records, R&S, Tresor, ... And they continue to do it. Majority of peoples who have signed the guestbook are europeans who keep Detroit techno at a high level in Europe. I don't know where you have finding any informations about our 'too much time in our hands'... But let me say you that it is not your problem. Please put your attention in your own life and not in our own life. Too, we are not only fans of 'ancient techno wax'... And we are not 'experts'... But we are supporters and fans of Detroit Techno and this give us the right to defend something we trust and for what we have passion and love. For your information, it's an american who have writing the letter in support to Juan Atkins. You have the right to don't agree with our action, but again I ask you only one thing. Be polited. 313 list is not a place for war between races or locations where you are from. A last word, I respect deeper all americans and all others on this planet. For me we are all the same, black, white, yellow, pink/green/orange if you want ! But some peoples have what we call the respect and the education some have not
