RE: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...
(sorry for the techish review, but) Agrd that the new Daft Punk is lousy. This album sounds like it's '97/98 and the Daft Punk guys just bought their synths that acknowledged people wanted to hear resonant-filter-based sounds - from the first wave of subtractive analog filters and digitally modeled distortion. The sounds are harsh and digital. Every listen makes me think they're biting off their countrymen, M83... There's a second dimension in that Daft Punk are doing the whole rock-on-synths bit. Besides the fact that they are late to the scene, there's no panache in their execution. Unfortunately I'm tainted - Every time I hear a guitar power chord sound that's pitched up or down only by changing the playback frequency (i.e. no sophisticated modeling, etc), I can't help but remember in 1988/89 downloading tracker songs on the Amiga and listening to demos - these underground tracks were all about the rock-vibe recreated electronically. Sure they hold a special place in my memory, but we're 15 years later. If there was some kind of nostalgic angle to their songs, I might think otherwise. I could rehash why Discovery and Homework are so great and how high they set the bar with those albums, but it's just frustrating. -Gil NB: The track Robot Rock liberally (i.e. the whole damn hook) samples from Breakwater's Release the Beast (1980), check out the original it's pretty cool.

Re: (313) Terrence Parker's online mix
I suppose there are people who have seen TP spin more than I but since we bring him to Iowa City regularly, I've seen him play more than any other DJ. TP could play a nice smooth deep house set, but he never does. When he goes crazy on the kill switch, or rocks doubles to a standstill, he's in the moment with the crowd, and it's perfect. Sometimes when you listen later to the recording, it doesn't sound as good out of context. But I'd much rather see a DJ try things at the edges of their skills and not be perfect, than be perfect and boring. TP uses the tricks to hype people up, and he uses track selection to build a vibe. I've seen him skip records, and drop the beat while juggling, but I've never seen him empty a dancefloor. Which more or less use the same 808 and /or 909 patterns throughout? What's wrong with sounding like Trax Records? I don't believe Juan Atkins ever pretended he wasn't influenced by the Chicago sound at that time. He just dissociated himself from outright acid. RE: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie
If they really wanted a big recognisable UK name to be represented on the movie then Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe. Stu Remember, the title of the film is 'Hi Tech Soul' therefore, rightly or wrongly, some talented people are going to be excluded from that rubric, and on the other hand some people who aren't particularly stand-out, might be included. It makes me realise though that in the UK, we don't really have a direct equivalent of 'Hi-Tech' soul musicians ... I mean, at a stretch you could include UK garage (but would you really want to?!?! ;-) I can think of a few people I'd include. Obviously the most credible would seem to be A Guy Called Gerald. Also perhaps Hope Grant. But such folk are few and far between. Another one is Tony Thorpe. But most of you just said 'who' to that, didn't you? As someone else suggested, perhaps Cox simply knows more influential people!
