For me, the joy found in their other releases has been the exceptional level
of craftsmanship in the tunesmithing and the cohesive concept holding the
release together. This album feels rushed, uninspired, and really doesn't
bring much "new" to the table. There are no moments in it where I found
myself grinning like an idiot from the pure joy of their inventiveness.
"Technologic" came the closest but I felt someone like the Detroit Grand

RE: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...

2005-03-23 Thread Gil Yaker
(sorry for the techish review, but)

Agrd that the new Daft Punk is lousy. This album sounds like it's '97/98 and
the Daft Punk guys just bought their synths that acknowledged people wanted
to hear resonant-filter-based sounds - from the first wave of subtractive
analog filters and digitally modeled distortion. The sounds are harsh and
digital. Every listen makes me think they're biting off their countrymen,
M83...

There's a second dimension in that Daft Punk are doing the whole
rock-on-synths bit. Besides the fact that they are late to the scene,
there's no panache in their execution. Unfortunately I'm tainted - Every
time I hear a guitar power chord sound that's pitched up or down only by
changing the playback frequency (i.e. no sophisticated modeling, etc), I
can't help but remember in 1988/89 downloading tracker songs on the Amiga
and listening to demos - these underground tracks were all about the
rock-vibe recreated electronically. Sure they hold a special place in my
memory, but we're 15 years later. If there was some kind of nostalgic angle
to their songs, I might think otherwise.

I could rehash why Discovery and Homework are so great and how high they set
the bar with those albums, but it's just frustrating.

-Gil

NB: The track Robot Rock liberally (i.e. the whole damn hook) samples from
Breakwater's Release the Beast (1980), check out the original it's pretty
cool.

Tracky as in more tracks than the songs - and downtempo forays - of
Discovery - it could actually be a return to that earlier techno ethos.
One of my colleagues said it sounded like Daft Punk 'jammin'.
They are probably more DJ oriented than listening oriented than Discovery.
They did it in a v short period and it just doesn't work for me, but I am

Re: (313) Terrence Parker's online mix

2005-03-23 Thread Kent Williams
I suppose there are people who have seen TP spin more than I but since
we bring him to Iowa City regularly, I've seen him play more than any
other DJ.

TP could play a nice smooth deep house set, but he never does. When he
goes crazy on the kill switch, or rocks doubles to a standstill, he's
in the moment with the crowd, and it's perfect. Sometimes when you
listen later to the recording, it doesn't sound as good out of
context.

But I'd much rather see a DJ try things at the edges of their skills
and not be perfect, than be perfect and boring. TP uses the tricks to
hype people up, and he uses track selection to build a vibe. I've seen
him skip records, and drop the beat while juggling, but I've never
seen him empty a dancefloor.

well sometimes on that mix i have to agree (tho i wish i had a mixer
where the switches sounded that clean, i digress tho).

i prefered that last mix that did the rounds (was that on tfunkshun? nick?)

it's the hip-hop approach to the mix i love tho, i can forgive him
over-use of the choppy transitions. especially when he flips the rhythm
around to get that shuffle beat (i don't know enough about music theory
to properly describe this, anyone help me out here? cyborgk?)

Nah. Plus QPR ain't mighty (anymore!)

I mean The Moody Boyz basically linked to KLF/Jimmy Cauty.

When I look back on some of the Moody Boyz's track titles like: 'Funky
Zulu: (You're So Fresh)' and 'First National Rapper' I sort of know why
he's more or less forgotten! ;-)

So forget Strafe's 'Set It Off' and Aleem's, 'Release Yourself' with
their scratchy recordings (the Strafe track has barely any bass). Which
more or less use the same 808 and /or 909 patterns throughout? What's
wrong with sounding like Trax Records? I don't believe Juan Atkins ever
pretended he wasn't influenced by the Chicago sound at that time. He
just dissociated himself from outright acid. But this is too easy...Plus
there's no spew to answer back!

RE: (313) Hi Tech Soul - The Movie

2005-03-23 Thread Odeluga, Ken

If they
really wanted a big recognisable UK name to be represented on the movie
then
Dave Clarke would actually have been the better bet maybe.

Stu

Remember, the title of the film is 'Hi Tech Soul' therefore, rightly or
wrongly, some talented people are going to be excluded from that rubric,
and on the other hand some people who aren't particularly stand-out,
might be included. It makes me realise though that in the UK, we don't
really have a direct equivalent of 'Hi-Tech' soul musicians ... I mean,
at a stretch you could include UK garage (but would you really want
to?!?! ;-)

I can think of a few people I'd include. Obviously the most credible
would seem to be A Guy Called Gerald. Also perhaps Hope Grant. But such
folk are few and far between. Another one is Tony Thorpe. But most of
you just said 'who' to that, didn't you? As someone else suggested,
perhaps Cox simply knows more influential people!

some pictures and I noticed the share name was spw and called him out on it.
