First Shake set I ever caught was at the Black Nation Records party with Mills and Surgeon. Claude Young and Shake killed on that night! some of the most amazing mixing I ever heard at a party. Re: (313) black devil disco club provenance
geez Kent, get it together :P It's on topic if we're allowed to do the kevin bacon/6 degrees of seperation on it -- mg & environ still have 313 creeping thru in their sound and should have lifetime 313-relativity membership since mg was the 1st/2nd 313 subscriber right? and they did the jersey devil social club sendoff...of course i guess if we can play kevin bacon with things, everything is on-topic. I think it's a great album personally, altho I haven't listened to it much yet. It sounds just like their old stuff, but i think the modern production is worn on it's sleeve, it's much too well-recorded and clean and full to not have been recorded digitally, and their old stuff was well before digital and sounded really musty and dusty by comparison. i actually still prefer the musty sound, but no biggie. ps shake rules. he's got the style. he brings a personality to techno/electronic music that there is not nearly enough of. no offense to derrick and juan and a lot of other big name techno dj's, but they're so hip and "techno" and sht behind the decks. shake is all talking crap at the crowd, the records, himself, singing along, and he just has the touch. he's a dj you don't feel like an idiot for keeping your eyes on rather than turning around and just dancing to. i will always remember his LIVE set at demf 1/2, played just off a k2000 i think, man it was s good, i remember how he'd occasionally play little riffs on the keys and how captivating it was even tho he was just sitting there..and also when he dj'd at the very first dL party in dallas, which was an almost flawless set, and when there were hiccups he pulled it off like claude young, fixed it in the mix, and made it even more entertaining and impressive in the process. and then he stayed up on stage after he was done and the night was over for another 30 minutes or so, shooting the sht with the whole audience all at once, it was special. it didn't hurt that convextion played live for the first time at that party, and plastic sleeves played too, and fbk from 21/22 banged it out too, he was helping shake out on that trip. legendary night for me.. i understand if anthony technoir was disappointed with anthony shake this time, but i bet shake appreciates the candor and is even harder on himself. he's capable of stunning things and i think he's secure in his abilities so no need to go easy on him, right? he is/was/remains the man. pps yo toby and robin and kamal and all my other 313 friends i am not keeping in good contact with..and yo shake! -Original Message- >From: kent williams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Sent: Jun 7, 2007 9:11 AM >To: Toby Frith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Cc: 313@hyperreal.org >Subject: Re: (313) black devil disco club provenance > >Well, all the reviews & PR is purposefully vague about it, and it >sounds old. Re: (313) Shake
I'm sure Shake is listening, and that the reason he hasn't chimed in on this thread is out of a sense of modesty and tact. Naturally. Personally, I wonder if he's interested in getting into the whole mix MP3 game. At home I think he's very focused on creating his own music, and when I've seen him spin his sets are very much in the moment and specific to the setting and the people present. I've never seen him record his sets, so it may be one of those 'you had to be there' things. Oh yeah, what i mean is: if there any recordings knocking about then we'd love to hear them. I know a lot of DJs that don't record mixes. It's a slightly unnatural thing to do for some people. robin...

The whole thing. I do it anyway: it is essential weekly listening! I can either post the entire show (works out about 220MB normally @ 256kbps) or just edit out the set. Not a big deal either way. Incidentally, the Cinematic Orchestra set from a month or so ago is still kicking around here: www.basemetal.co.uk/tco. I will probably have to pull it down next Thursday so get it while you can. I meant more the midi structures and sounds Robin. I somehow feel he might have had the parts for years (even if not actually 30 years!) and maybe even recorded them, but that when the chance to do another LP came along, the decision was made to re-record things so that it fitted into our quantising-obsessed times! Fair enough. I guess I was addressing Kent's original point. I think the 'looseness' of a lot of old disco and italo (real drummers mainly, even when the drums are electronic) is what I love. Even when I play off the laptop with Live I'm very careful not to warp the feel out of things. I avoid "temponized" style edits for this reason. I guess those are for people using turntables. robin...

I guess I'm suggesting that some of the material from which '28' is made up, could indeed have been composed a long time ago, but it was definitely recorded recently. -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 07 June 2007 09:03 To: kent williams; list 313 Subject: RE: (313) black devil disco club provenance Hey Kent, I don't think there was any intention to present that LP as 'dug up from the vaults' as it were, anyway, was there? It was just the 'first' EP which Rephlex released which was genuinely vintage stuff (a re-release in fact). I believe that that was the only thing the group ever actually finished. However Bernard Fevre continued to work quietly never releasing anything for decades (like a lot of people we all know!) until Richard D. James and co 'discovered' the original EP and did a deal to have it re-released. Why? The tempo is rock solid all the way through. A computer was involved, or at a minimum, the drummer was playing to a very steady click. I'm not sure a drummer was actually used for the tracks at all, based on the regularity of the beats. I don't know which is more impressive -- a drummer that can play for 6 minutes rock steady down to the millesecond, or how carefully they faked a live drummer. Or, for that matter, how organically the live and machine drumming is put together, if both are used. In other words, it's a tremendously well done fake of the sound of 1982, done recently, which incidentally is some of my favorite Italo.

Surely the LP title gives it away? It's 28 years after the first one, which was in 1978 I believe. -Original Message- From: kent williams [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 07 June 2007 08:54 To: list 313 Subject: (313) black devil disco club provenance Having just had a several hour Ableton Live warping party -- including several old Salsoul classics, which I'm sure are hell to beatmatch on vinyl -- I've come to a conclusion about the Black Devil Disco Club '28 After' album: All the tracks are of recent vintage.
