Honestly if someone wants to be a Scientologist, it's up to them.
Don't see the attraction, myself.

I wonder what sort of Return To Forever it will be -- The first couple
of records were fantastic, as is Chick Corea's 60s acoustic jazz.
Then he totally flew up his own 4ss. I still listen to "Light As A
Feather" all the time. "500 Miles High" breaks my heart every time. It
is totally the sort of thing Moodyman or Theo would sample.

well, since Return to Forever tracks are full of Scientology references...

It's true
Detroit is a great city to ride in

I would not use a high end expensive bike though, some of the roads are
worse than some trails I've been on.
consider giving these guys a call or e-mail to set up a bike.
http://backalleybikes.org

they take old bikes and fix them up cheap or free if you volunteer
they would probably let you rent one

especially in Liverpool, people don't tend to say hello to people they
don't know, but in Detroit, there is a strong sense of southern
hospitality, people say hello to one another as they pass by, in
elevators, on the streets, everywhere you go.

Just as in every other city, there are places you wouldn't want to
ride your bike, as it gets a bit dangerous, but during the daytime, I
tend to not worry where I ride, just after dark I try to be cautious.
People here do tend to bring there bikes into their apartments, so I'd
suggest speaking to your hotel to see if they have an inside storage
space for bikes.

Bike riding in Detroit has become more and more popular, as the gas
prices are very high. I tend to see 4-10 bike riders a day at the
minimum in the summer and I work a 11-5, so I'm sure I miss the
majority of good biking hours. It's a major city, so yes, you will be
riding amongst a lot of highrises and parking lots, but theres also
parks, the river walk, the graffitti mile (which will hopefully be
renovated enough by DEMF you can ride from the lake front to Eastern
Market). Detroit's very spread out, so you shouldn't expect to ride
from downtown to Record Time Roseville for an outing, that would end
up being a 20+ mile journey roundtrip. There are very cute
neighborhoods that are a good ride-through, such as Woodbridge, which
is about a 10 minute ride from Hart Plaza.

I'd suggest a guide, though, for anything your doing in the city,
especially if you've never been here before. If your interested in a
bike tour around the city, I'd be willing to do a tour on the Saturday
from noon till 2. Let me know.

I had a look at Detroit on Google earth, and it looks like there's a huge
green belt almost between the city center and the suburbs, and the city
centre is comprised of masses of huge empty vacant lots. It looks weird for
a City. Is everything in the center on a large scale, or are there areas of
old housing and row shops etc...On the bike would you be cycling between
high rises and carparks?

There are a few cycle rental places starting up recently. I'll find
the info for you cos I know cycling downtown is really becoming a
popular thing to do. I always cycle during the summer now. It's much
preferred to driving.

(313) New Recloose

2008-03-18 Thread Wes Prince
Some insights (from local mag Groove Guide) on the eve of Recloose's NZ tour
with live band. Responding to the interviewer's description of 'Perfect
Timing' as full of 70s/80s funk echoes -- an album where "Polynesian soul
meets Detroit robo-funk," Matt reflects:

"It's just a phase man, I'm getting older and I miss the good old days of
funky electronic noodling synth business. I was born in 1974 and I'm still
at it at 33. I guess I'm at the point where you start getting nostalgic. So
yeah, a bit of nostalgia and me trying to recreate my funky suburban
childhood memories...coming from Detroit there is always, well not always,
the impression you have to keep it real. You know, keep it dark, keep it
melancholy. I like that side of music as well, and I've done it before. But,
I mean, life's too short to always be serious. I think sometimes it's funny
to make some 'tongue-in-cheek' sh*t that makes you want to move."

More comments if people are interested...

Cheers,

Wes
