Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
Benny Benassi... i never saw him spinning. But my hopes are not high, once i've already heard his tunes around the city and in the clubs. He is one of the DJs always booked for mega rich boy/college/high school events here in Brazil as "the number one of the world". Well... there was a lot of number ones playing in this kind of parties here. Tiesto... Paul Van Dik. You name it. A lot of people in "number one" position at the same time. When things get too absurd, they say that "this john doe is the number two..." (!!!). Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
Like Moby's new album - it's a commercial pop hacked up hairball terribly predictable if you are aware of what's "in fashion" except if you consider the track "Every Day is 1989" in which Moby brings back the old rave piano progression and sounds like him trying to revive "Feeling So Real" He does this again on the tune "The Stars" except he adds a bit of the ol' Hoover - yeah, Hoover sounds I recall an article that came out around the time of Animal Rights where he was basically lambasting people like the Aphex Twin and lamenting the death of piano use in dance music and it was for this reason he quit the dance music scene (as Moby) man, Moby's album is pure rubbish (listening to it now) it's pure pop-trance/hi-nrg/rave nostalgia nonsense and you just know he's going to be playing this stuff because it's going to come out April 1st and every Moby fan is going to be wetting themselves MEK "Thomas D. Dubfire did that spastik remix, so he is 'looks' legitimate to trance people. Moby runs a place called "teany" on the lower east side of manhattan, a vegan / organic / boutique tea - sandwich shop with 20 different kinds of loose leaf teas. He also has started running a night at the Hiro Ballroom in Chelsea / Maritime Hotel (I believe that's the name). Hiro looks like a Japanese restaurant performance hall like the one in Kill Bill. The Hiro night's feature a combination of bottle service for the yuppie corporate party crowd and the art school / hipster / nyu electro - indie - hipsterclash music, a la justice / nu-rave / daft punk, etc. Looks like Moby is looking for some action. (313) Re: DEMF some names announced finally
It's always mixed emotions when the lineups are announced; you have to balance the excitement of the sprinkled musical gems with the "what were they thinking?", just like most other years. I think we just have to accept we aren't going to have the sort of festival the first few years were anymore, and make the most of it. Besides, all of the joke acts will act like flypaper for the raver crowd, leaving plenty of dance space for the good music : ) Still, I'm certainly cooking up a fresh batch of hater-tots for any progressive/breaks/trance nonsense. -Arturo P.S. Anyone who thinks I'm being too snarky here, just close your eyes and think how it's going to look/sound this year when Moby closes out the main stage with "Porcelain" to a sea of waving glow sticks. Try not to keep your dinner down after that mental image.

Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
I'm perfectly fine with all these demf lineups. there are exceptions, but by and large demf is the only chance detroiters get to see see and hear non-detroit electronic music. its nice to hear some different records, outside, with lots of nice people. funding the festival isn't a problem unless you want to fund a free festival comprised entirely of 313-favorite artists, and with the sound and organization that paxahau brought to the table. oh, and you want the lineup for next years festival announced by the middle of june. new music lovers of all kinds interesting comment there since from what I've heard from everyone here is that the audience diversity has dwindled fewer families and kids, fewer people "just passing by" or "just checking it out" more ravers strange that at one time 313-list members were afraid Carol Marvin was going to take the festival into this sort of direction MEK "/0" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 03/25/2008 04:48:30 PM: > since the festival became a business and it was recognized that the festival > had to attract new music lovers of all kinds, not just hone in on pandering > to the close minded 30-40-somethings on the hyperreal 313 list > > probably not the answer you wanted to hear, is it? > > > - Original Message - > From: "Michael Kuszynski" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> > Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 4:52 PM > Subject: Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally > > > > since when are trance and progressive djs booked for demf. > > > > On 3/25/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> > >> > >> ALEX UNDER ?live > >> ALTON MILLER > >> BENNY BENASSI > >> BUZZ GOREE > >> CARL CRAIG > >> CASSY > >> COBBLESTONE JAZZ ?live > >> COOL KIDS ?live > >> DBX ?live > >> DUBFIRE > >> EGYPTIAN LOVER ?live > >> GIRL TALK ?live > >> GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS -live > >> HALF HAWAII ?live > >> JAMES ZABIELA > >> JORIS VOORN ?live > >> KONRAD BLACK > >> MATHIAS KADEN ?live > >> MIKE GRANT > >> MINX > >> MOBY -dj set > >> NEWCLEUS -live > >> SPEEDY J -live with Scott Pagano VJ > >> TECH ITCH > >> TERRENCE PARKER > >> ZIP > >> > >> > >> some good - some meh - some sh*t > >> > >> as we've come to expect > >> > >> MEK > >> > >> > > > > > > -- > > --- > > Michael Kuszynski > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > http://www.planerecordings.com > > New York, NY > > >

Re: (313) Josh Wink @ Movment 08
F i've always thought it would be entertaining, as a dj, to play just one record back to back to back for sixty minutes. I have a friend (Dean) who did just this - it was back in the 80s and he was spinning before a Dead Or Alive (;-) show in downtown Pontiac (Detroit 'burb). He bought an old Joe Tex 7" ("I Gotcha") and played it and it alone (varying the speed, etc) until the power was cut to the DJ booth (inconveniently located up a steep ladder). According to Dean, Pete Burns personally flipped him off. I can't recall all of the story, but there was some semi-reasonable justification for it. Funny nonetheless - and if you knew Dean, you'd know that it's very probably true. jeff

It's good to see an even mix of Detroiters. Although it's really funny to see Benny Benassi sandwiched between Alton Miller and Buzz Goree. i can't be 100% sure about this, but if i remember correctly, the "meditation will manifest" and "higher state of consciousness" samples both came from the same early 90s ambient relaxation self help type CD. i wish i could remember which one exactly. it was a big player in ambient DJ circles at the time, and josh basically nicked those two samples from that one source. well, the best of my hopes is that they were balancing responsibilities of how much booking costs are, who is available and willing, and if agents are requiring bundling. the best of my hopes is that they were constrained by business reality. maybe they just want to advance themselves in financial concerns and build relationships regardless of musical mission or core preferences, since people will keep coming to detroit. last year the festival itself was miserable in some of the regards of minimal bookings, while brilliant in the case of a few. Re: (313) Josh Wink @ Movment 08
My view is that Josh Wink has been prolific at a price, and the price is being derivative at best and, apparently, 'nicking' other producers at worst. No doubt he has a nose for what sells on the dance floor, could anyone ever forget Higher State of Consciousness. After the first time I never wanted to hear it again, but it was supremely popular for about a year it seemed. On the other hand, Feel the Warmth (on the Deepest Shade of Techno comp) was ok, How's the Music was pretty decent acid, and I'm still fond of Meditation Will Manifest. But now someone will come along and tell me how -that- one is a nick too I suppose :) fh

So it's cool to bite, because it has been done before? Perhaps I'm over simplifying that matter, but that's just silly. Was I pissed when that all went down, sure, do I still hold a grudge, yep. But that's just me, I'm human after all. My biggest issue with Mr. Wink is that his biggest hits were what's wrong with dance music as a whole! Example: How's your Evening So far! - great record when it was French Kiss Superphreak - it was better when Dan did it. I think what your missing in the rage that all the heads exhibited at that time period, was the simple fact that Josh caned those exact records he chose to bastardized and then made a mint off of them. I don't care if he plays the festival or not (i'll be there anyway), just don't get it twisted on why ppl were pissed about those particular contributions to dance music. jw On Tue, Mar 25, 2008 at 3:48 PM, Frank Glazer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > i think the whole hullabaloo over ripping off dan bell's track was > bulllshit. doesn't anybody remember the 50s when five > different artists would do the same song in their own style? i think > where josh went wrong with that was not crediting dan for inspiration. > lame, but still, i think the people who got so upset by it were > overreacting. > > > > > On Tue, Mar 25, 2008 at 3:43 PM, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Through a former friend, I met and hung out with Josh for an afternoon a > > few years back. > > He's a nice fella. Through a former friend, I met and hung out with Josh for an afternoon a few years back. He's a nice fella. I think maybe he might tend to play whatever the crowd might want - sort of like a Carl Cox type dj. For one crowd it might be more breakbeats, another it would be more trance/prog house, another he might play a bit more house or techno. I think because he's a bit of a chameleon he might appear to be a bit commercial. that and maybe the whole rip-off of Dan Bell's track MEK "Frank Glazer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 03/25/2008 02:35:39 PM: > i don't really understand why so many people hate on josh wink. his > set at demf 06 left me cod but i really enjoy a lot of his > records, and i've heard him play some really great dj sets too. i > think a lot of people hate on him, frankly, simply because of his > image. > > On Tue, Mar 25, 2008 at 3:20 PM, diana potts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > *braces self* > > > > I haven't seen Josh Wink play lately, but his music is > > not exactly a motivator. > > > > I completely admire what Josh "built" in Philly in the > > past with others. maybe Josh Wink battling it up live > > with Carl Craig. Re: (313) Josh Wink @ Movment 08
I'm not hating on him- as said, I completely respect the music he has made and the energy he created in Philadelphia (though he plays there on such a rare basis anymore). I consider he and Nigel intelligent individuals who have seen more than my eyeballs ever will. I really wasn't aware of any image he has considering I don't go out or listen to recent downloads, etc.. I think it just takes a lot to get me getty about anyone, anywhere anymore. i don't really understand why so many people hate on josh wink. his set at demf 06 left me cod but i really enjoy a lot of his records, and i've heard him play some really great dj sets too. i think a lot of people hate on him, frankly, simply because of his image. I picked up a flier in Detroit in 1999 where the Kooky Scientist was to be performing a Live PA at a party. A week later Fred Giannelli posted here that he would not be performing in Detroit at that time, no matter what had been read locally. I don't remember if he had a falling out with the promoter or if they just used his name, but I do remember that the flier was out more than a month before the party...so i lean toward the latter. Re: (313) Bloc
I'm not privvy to all the ins and outs and what have yous of the various scenes, but I have heard this from enough people that there's no way they're all just making it up. I also had a friend who this happened to, not exactly a parallel to Juan but just letting you know, yes it definitely does happen. Promoters can be sketchy sometimes. Could be miscommunication, genuine delusion, or any other number of honest mistakes... but yeah I'm sure some cases are just maliciousness/looking for a quick buck. Most of the sketchier promoters don't last forever. Eventually people will catch on and stop supporting them. When I saw UR in Brighton, (south England) doing a similar show they played Numbers but Skurge mixed it in and Mike played some extra keys over the top and this could explain why Frequency 7 sounded very similar to the original. It's possible that the crew were a bit tired because by the time they played on the Friday night before last, they had already done a few nights that week. One person who spoke to Mike Banks suggested that they'd not slept (much?) for a few days in fact! Personally I enjoyed their set although I'd agree that the playing could have been a little punchier. Many faves (at least of mine) old and new were there, Afrogermanic, Geiger Counter, The Electrocutor, Moor Horsemen On Bolaris, Negative Evolution etc. For me the highlight was the jaw-dropping surprise inclusion of 'Frequency 7' - which somehow the group had engineered to be a very close cover, reverb, compression, chords and all - and then added some extra sass. The serious appreciation from about 10 people who recognized it must been bemused to the the other 3-400 who didn't. I stick by what I said afterwards that this particular line-up has potential to provide some more unequivocally excellent performances in the months and years to come. I do know that he was having some major health problems, and looked unhealthily skinny a few years back when I saw him walking around at the festival... One thing about him, that Terrence Parker said to me a few years back when I asked about Juan. Terrence said that it's one thing to make a few records and show up to DJ at parties and have a few people know who you are. It's quite another to be in the position of being a founding artist in a whole new genre, whose early work attained mythic status in the scene. He thought Juan felt that pressure keenly. There's the man Juan who is showing up to play a show, and there's this giant mythical beast following him around like a shadow. Some people -- i.e. Derrick -- can surf the wave of their reputation and enjoy the ride. Others like Kevin Saunderson, are grounded in family and church, and let the crazy stuff slide. Juan is in a third category. Don't know those guys, can't speak for them, just my impressions from the outside. It is extremely good news to me that he appears to be in better health and has been turning up regularly for his shows. Re: (313) Bloc
Do people actually do this? I've never encountered any specific incident of a promoter here putting someone's name on a flyer just to pull in numbers without actually booking them, but people I speak to in the US talk about it quite a bit. Is it common practice there then? There are several booking agents out there booking him And tons of promoters who like to drop names on flyers To make a profit.
