1. It's a stupid argument, I was just giving a little shout-out to ze
germans, wasn't trying to kick over a bee hive.

2. Since I originated this argument (on this latest occasion), my 2 cents:

It's easy to come up with a lot of techno heavyweights who were
influenced by Kraftwerk, we can all agree on that.

I think you'll find it extremely hard to come up with any Detroit
folks that were influences ON early Kraftwerk, or for that matter, any
-other- electronic artists that were influences ON Kraftwerk. They got
the ball rolling, the wellspring if you will. Case Closed. Next!

(313) Meanwhile, back in Detroit......

2008-05-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Alrighty! First a BIG thanks to everybody who got in touch recently
about the birth of wee Laurel Brunton- too many mails to send and not
enough time to do it so I'l just have to use the list as a "shotgun"
approach to covering them all for the moment. Cheers!

Now, music from Detroit and Detroit influenced musicians

What's the thoughts on Andres' new 12 on Mahogini? That 12 he did for
Moods and Grroves is still probably my favourite of his productions
but this current release is pretty fine for some early summer vibes-
really digging the "make you want to do right" sample as used on the
old DJ Pierre "Luv Dancin" on Strictly. Mmm. Nice

New Terrance Dixon on Finest Blend- 4 tracks of his trademark
craziness- his stuff always sounds like it's about to fall apart at
the seams- sometimes it gets a bit toointense (the old Unknown
Black Shapes 12|" has a track that is literally just a Bass Drum for
about 6 minutes with the odd bit of distortion and reverb...and that's
it!) but I'm really quite liking the B Side of this one.

What about that Der Zyklus thing on Gigilo from a few weeks back- I'm
never quite sure if he's taking the piss with some of his
stuffguess that's half the fun/frustration! Needless to say if
you're a Drexciyan warrior (even just a part time or weekend one) then
this will float your boat.

If you're a fan of the DJ Godfather booty sound you could do worse
than check out the UK's DJ Guy Goin'Crazy EP on Global Fire- it aint
form Detroit but it's pretty autherntic Booty stylee- I'm not a fan of
this style to be honest but I really quite enjoyed it so there must be
a bit more too it that the run of the mill. Or I'm getting more
booty-licious in my old age :)

I heard a really good Scott Grooves thing today- 4 tracks on blue
vinyl- didn't catch the name of it but a couple fo well good deep
house tracks and some more Techno-y things too- quite a varied
collection for Mr Grooves and the second record by him in a year that
I've liked.

Take it you've all checked out the recent Sean Deason on Matrix
(Elements Vol 2)? Fans of the classic early/mid 90's Detroit sounds
will go fairly nuts for this I would say.

I'm sure there's loads more to talk about but I wouldn't want to be
the ONLY one talking about current releases by Detroit artists on the
list :)

peace out etc

Jason

This seems like a pretty meaningless debate. Techno happened because
of a lot of people and influences, at a particular time and place, and
as it became a distinctive musical style, it went world wide within a
very few years.

You'd be just as correct to nominate Tadao Kikumoto for the Mount

Additionally, while the mentions of funk and disco are relevant, the

largely evolved from kraftwerkian tendrils.
We might have had some form of YMO as a factor, but even they cite the
well known cyclists as formative - and besides, they still don't have
the recognition factor of Kraftwerk.

look, i have nothing but love for kraftwerk. much of their oeuvre is
quite good, and i've been a fan since, i dunno, 1985. but i just
think their importance is overrated. like i said, nobody can deny
their influence, but i really believe that american disco, funk and
electro and dare i say synthpop as a conglomeration was more important
to the detroit techno sound than the individual effect of kraftwerk.
i don't think that's too hard to understand, or agree with. i mean,
really, when it comes down to it, the biggest influence on the B3 is
consistently listed as mojo, and kraftwerk was just one of many MANY
things that he played, right???

It's pretty hard to envision WHAT Mojo would have played had there been
no Kraftwerk and the bands THEN-influenced by them.
And as soon as you raised that electro flag in the above paragraph, it
really derailed your pitch. I don't know too many variations of electro
which don't somehow hearken back in that direction.
Good Lord - can anyone imagine the Nu Dance Show without 50 versions of
Egyptian Lover/Tour de France (or even Egyptian Lover without Kraftwerk
in the wings)?

position to judge the history of techno and it's origins than you are.

This seems like a pretty meaningless debate. Techno happened because
of a lot of people and influences, at a particular time and place, and
as it became a distinctive musical style, it went world wide within a
very few years.

You'd be just as correct to nominate Tadao Kikumoto for the Mount TechnoMore.

Re: (313) 313 - T

2008-05-21 Thread Frank Glazer
look, i have nothing but love for kraftwerk. much of their oeuvre is
quite good, and i've been a fan since, i dunno, 1985. but i just
think their importance is overrated. like i said, nobody can deny
their influence, but i really believe that american disco, funk and
electro and dare i say synthpop as a conglomeration was more important
to the detroit techno sound than the individual effect of kraftwerk.
i don't think that's too hard to understand, or agree with. i mean,
really, when it comes down to it, the biggest influence on the B3 is
consistently listed as mojo, and kraftwerk was just one of many MANY
things that he played, right???

There's no "if". All happened the way it happened. Kraftwerk IS a
major influence on techno, what's the point of speculating about it

Haha, I know the one you mean - that ravey track playing in the brothel?
It's not the same track, no, though pretty similar style. I don't
think that was a Detroit track though - someone correct me if I'm
wrong? (the one you're referring to on this mix is X101, which
definitely IS a Detroit tune ;-)

Re: (313) 'Crater Crawlers' mix

2008-05-21 Thread robin

Just a note on how much I enjoyed this mix. I'm not always feeling
techno these days (my age? :) ) but this did it for me. Not just the
tunes but the style of the mixing too.

Nice one Matt.

yeah it's *OK*, nothing special tho. i thought 'pockets' was much more
exciting, tho still not a patch on the street mix of 'bug in the
bassbin', which it always reminds me of. i don't think d techno actually

need legitimising by alleged super-producers who come up with tepid
stuff like this anyway. but then again, what would i know.

I had a 'moment' as the sun came through the window of the train to
work while listening to "Together" this morning. I love it when that
happens. :)

I didn't realise it was of 2003 vintage.

Had 'Solitaire' http://www.discogs.com/release/1254127 on a couple of
times today. Possibly my favourite yet (although I don't own them all).
"Come With Me" and "Moonhacker" are wicked. Dig the others as well, but
these stand out.
