I have to dismiss, i'm not using Ableton. And err, just to put things into
perspective before any kind of SW/HW discussion comes up. I absolutely
worship X-102 for the greatness, the music and everything. Big up. I was
just merely talking about the fact that they both looked absolutely absent

For me it would have to be "In The Light Of the Moment". A beautiful,
sprawling 13 and a half minute piece of disco. Just this track made the
purchase of "The World of Arthur Russell" on Soul Jazz
(http://www.discogs.com/release/225139) totally worth it.

Of note, the Arthur Russell doco was just showed here in the Sydney for
the film festival that was just on the last fortnight. I didn't manage
to make it but some friends of mine did.

A friend's post-doco twitter was "Arthur Russell doco last night was
very nice. It didn't reveal a hell of a lot; the man is still an enigma
post-doco but desire for music"

RE: (313) X-102 clips

2008-06-24 Thread james . hurlbut
As far as I could see, there were no laptops involved in the
performance. Jeff was on 4 cdjs, a couple of mixing consoles and what
looked like a small silver 909 styled box. Mike was on a newish Korg,
some other keyboard, and was using a Tenori-on for sequencing on some
tracks.

They didnt start until around 3:15 and I guess about 10 minutes into
the set they had to stop and draw the curtains back due to technical
difficulties. I got there right when they started again and yes, it
was pure sonic warfare :) Sure, there were alot of slips and off beat
moments throughout like any improv style jam. But when it came
together the thickness and texture of the sound was fantastic.

The venue is a gigantic warehouse with multi-point sound, massive
laser and light rigs and three giant screens so I think the majority
of the crowd couldnt even see the stage or any potential hands in the
air theatrics :) . That is probably why they don't focus much on the
stage presence. The atmosphere is more of what I have seen at raves
than at clubs, with a focus on anonymous performance, except of course
for the big blowup shots of mike and jeff looking earnestly at the
machines in their button down shirts.

Here are a few more clips from the performance. You can see Jeff and
Mike working the machines from the video screens on some of these.
Also, I uploaded snippets of an interview done with Jeff earlier on
Saturday at Sonar by Day.

(313) X-102 clips - Mini Sonar Review.

2008-06-24 Thread Williams, Graham
Was Ronnie at the gig? surely if you wanted to see hands in the air and dancing
on stage you'd go to Movement?

X-102 was a great gig, great sound, great visuals, although the main video
screen was supposed to be projected and not a massive LED screen, some of the
visuals didnt tune out as well as they should have. But you wouldn't even
notice that they hadn't.
The whole gig was also shown on the big screens with lots of close ups of Mills
and Banks playing live. Lots of 909 from Mills and lots from Banks on the
keyboards.

They had to stop after a couple of minutes, the curtains closed for about 10 -
15 minutes, the video wasn't plugged in. I think they played for about an hour.
Definitley the best thing we saw at Sonar this year.

A few other reviews:

Ewan Pearson: He played twice on the Friday night, nice tracks, mixed very well.

Justice: Rubbish!

The Minus Crew: Nothing Special, I couldn't see the cube anywhere.

Villalobos: We didnt see much of this gig, it was after 5am when it started, it
was ok but not enough to keep us from feeling tired.

BC vs JC feat. Darren Emerson: Nothing special.

Róisín Murphy: We didnt stay for too long at this gig, it didnt appear to be
anything special.

Milton Jackson: Just saw this for a couple of minutes, seemed good but we didnt
hang around.

We missed Theo, he was on late and we just forgot about it.

We saw some Deepcord, only for a little bit, it seemed ok, but didnt see enough
to really know how it went, the crowd seemed to be loving it. We stood at the
side of the tent they played in, it didnt seem loud enough, but if we had of
been in the tent it would have sounded fine. It would have just been too hot.

COH plays Cosey: This got boring very quickly, we left with the lyric of "Fcuk
it...Deeper...fcuk it Deeper..."

The rest of Sonar by day was ok, nothing amazing grabbed my attention, it was
just nice to sit around in the sun. There is always a great atmosphere in Sonar
by day.

I'm sure I missed a few things, overall we had a good time, without the X-102
gig, I think I would have been a bit disappointed with the weekend. I have some
Pics & Video of the X-102 gig, I'll post them up in a few days.
