(313) DJ Agents / Agencies

2010-03-03 Thread Placid
Good Evening List

Suppose one wanted to raise ones profile a bit and possibly do a few more gigs
in slightly more exotic locations around our continent.

Whats the deal with agents / agencies.

Having perused the www for a bit, my conclusions are that there are alot of
'DJ' agencies set up for bedroom dj's in macclesfield who want their own
residency in eyebeefa, or sign up for 200 quid and you're guaranteed a slot at
Fernando's on a Friday night.

Is it a case of they'll find you when they think you are a viable option or ?

Do they have an exclusive right on all your gigs ?

I know a couple of people with them and they take a cut when they get you a
booking. That seems fair enough to me but no other fees take place.. do they.

Just mulling things over.as I'm sure there are agents and artists with some
helpful input on here.

I don't know how he does it but Kirk Degiorgio always comes up with
tracks that I'm powerless to resist:

http://planetary-folklore.blogspot.com/2010/03/kirk-degiorgio-membrane-planet-e.html

You could say that it's a bog standard beat, it's tracky as hell, and
that minor/major7 chord through delay has been done to death by
everyone from shawn rudiman to aril brikha. Well, I just did. But
somehow it's beside the point when Degiorgio gets up a head of steam.

Listening this reminds me of watching Dan Bell play at DEMF, standing
next to Shawn Rudiman. I told him "you know, Techno really is a cheap

Re: (313) food for thought -- new blood?

2010-03-03 Thread David Powers
Seth did spend a fair amount of time living in the Detroit area
though, so I think he counts. I remember hearing him play records in a
basement in Ferndale along with Lee Curtiss for an extended period of
time, maybe 3 years ago.

But I would note that again, both Kyle and Seth are really more on the
house tip...

But this does bring up a point: the only way to make it is to get
booked in Europe, and that's not necessarily an easy thing to pull
off, especially for somebody younger. Surely there could be more
potential up and coming artists who will never get anywhere because
they don't have enough money and / or connections to get to Europe
regularly. You'll definitely never get noticed playing out in Detroit
or Chicago... And it's not like putting a good release out would be
enough to get anyone's attention now.

So I guess my point is, suppose there was somebody really hot on the
rise, what are the chances that the list would ever find out about
them? The world has changed a lot since techno started...
