(313) Wild Kingdom Revs Up for a Nest Expulsion

2010-08-14 Thread Richard Hester
Last week, Parcel Post, my trainee, piloted the good ship KFJC on his
own for a 1/2 hr stint. In the playlist, his bit starts with the Aphex
track and ends with Atom Heart. The playlist can be seen at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=35984 . The purpose of this 1/2
hour exercise is to get familiar with the studio workings and also to be
able to whomp a short set together out of unfamiliar material. I exit
the studio and let the trainee sort things out by himself, though I'm
close enough to intervene in case of a disaster. A 1/2 hour set consists
of 5-6 tracks (unless you're playing punk rock) and encompasses only two
breaks on our time clock, so it's not too overwhelming as a starter.
This will culminate eventually in a one hour set, where the trainee will
do pretty much everything he's been taught, including mundane background
tasks like playlist maintenance, log keeping, and all the other
fol-de-roll you folks in the audience never need worry about. If this
goes off OK, the trainee gets kicked out of the nest, and is qualified
to do solo graveyard shifts where he can further hone his skills (that
means that Europeans will be hearing this guy over their breakfast
coffee and rolls...). Building up to tonight's 1/2 hour exercise, I'm
playing from the leftovers of a mess of records that I pulled to do a
2-hour set last Saturday afternoon at a local record store, including
bits from Black Dog, Nightmares on Wax, Sweet Exorcist, Kraftwerk,
Claude Young, Sterac, 69, and others.

Limited time archives for all shows on KFJC (including this one) are
available at http://www.kfjc.org/broadcast_archives/ . These are
"rolling archives", available for two weeks after any given show. My
shows are listed under "Goodwrench". Send comments and suggestions to
i...@kfjc.org .

"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning,
12A-3A (8A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San Francisco Bay
area can find a webcast at http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php .
Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived at kfjc.org.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show "Just
Desserts" that was on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000, so you can see what what I'm up to these days is pretty much
consistent with what I was up to all along.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at pr...@kfjc.org to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

Richard Hester
