(313) Love did save the day
I had the fortunate opportunity and pleasure to attend David Mancuso's Loft Party here in NYC last night. I gotta say it was something special, and it felt like I was part of something that mattered. The crowd was absolutely lovely, and eclectic to say the least: children, old people, hippies, funky people, faces of all colors, it was beautiful. Everyone came here with the intention of simply having a good time and dancing to great music. And the music, wow. David Mancuso played awesome music all night, he builds his set perfectly and plays every record from beginning to end. People would clap between songs and after a while you did not even notice that he wasn't "mixing" songs together. It flowed so perfectly. I recognized a handful of tunes, some sounded familiar but I could not identify them, others I had never heard and the older Puerto Rican guy next to me was singing the lyrics at the top of his lungs. And the sound was perfect. The sound system was so clear, every record sounded absolutely fantastic. It was not too loud, you could have a conversation without yelling, but if you moved to the center of the dance floor, you truly felt surrounded by the music. Ame's Rej sounded brilliant. For the most part I would say he played soulful disco, but he would play some cool, dark minimal track then drop some funky jam and the place would just erupt. As an example, after Rej he played Nick Straker's 'A Little Bit of Jazz' and everyone just ate it up. The first balloon drop occurred around 10:30 or so and I did not realize just how much people like to smack balloons around. Everyone in the place had a smile on their face and was getting down, as it should be. Anyway, I wanted to share my excitement and experience. If you ever have the chance to go, do not miss. Worth every penny, and you still get a full night's sleep after. Adam

Re: (313) Vinylmania in NYC closed?! Dope Jams is open!
I had a chance to stop by Dope Jams today to inspect, and let me just say they've got a killer selection! Thanks J.T. for the heads up!! I was there for a bout an hour and a half, and I picked up the following goodies (could've bought a whole lot more): CC - Paris Live - Planet e V/A - Underground Anthems ep - Sistrum Convextion - Romantic Interface - AW Ugly Edits 07/Ugly Edits 08 R&S - Mango Walk Jimmy Ross - First True Love Affair Thom Yorke - The Eraser (Slow to Speak remix) Larry Levan - Larry 09 (Slow to Speak edits) And that's just the tip of the iceberg at this shop...seriously good selection. I flipped through plenty of tunes I wanted to check out, just didn't have the time today. One of the guys from Slow to Speak actually works there/runs the shop. He was a very nice guy. I'm glad I stopped by, and I'll definitely be going back. Thanks again for the tip! Re: (313) since I won't be at DEMF
I had the cab ride of my life in Detroit during the DEMF one year, I will never forget it and I am just glad that I was with friends to prove that it actually happened. After standing in line for well over an hour trying to get into the Transmat after-party we gave up and opted to go to another party somewhere on the outskirts of town, I believe Stacey Pullen and Alton Miller were to play. We hailed a cab and told the guy where we wanted to go. He looked back at us and said, "there ain't no f'n way I'm takin two white boys out there at this time of the night!" Based on his recommendation we decided to call it a night. On our way back to the hotel, the cab driver started telling us a story about how he and his buddy had this scheme once where they would meet up with some ladies (I'll use ladies in lieu of his preferred word), take them out, get them smashed, then go to the hotel. Well apparently he and his buddy liked to shave their heads and switch it up in the middle of the night for their unsuspecting ladies. It seems that if the ladies were smashed enough, and the lights were low enough, this was an excellent way to try all offerings at the buffet. Well, as he was wrapping up his very animated story, this car comes out of nowhere driving insanely fast, passing us like we were sitting still. "Oh sh#t!" our cab driver exclaims, "it's a f$ckin police chase." And it was, a police car comes flying by us immediately after the first car. So the cab driver speeds up to keep up with the action. The police car catches up with the first car and pulls it over quickly, cops get out, etc...our wise cab driver knowingly states about the car that got busted, "where the f$ck he gonna go in this city?" as we pass by the scene. After we pass that scene, we come to a red light and pull up next to this Lexus SUV that has a serious entertainment system set up inside his vehicle. Our Dalai Lama like- cab driver, in his infinite wisdom, observes, "now how a motherf$cker gonna have 5 TV's and no ladies (using my alternate word here again)?" We pondered his rhetorical question. At that point, we finally made it to our hotel, where we paid and had to say goodbye to our cab driver. I had to ask my buddies if that really just happened. It did. Not too sure about the French scene overall, but I picked up this live album by I:Cube the other day that is really fantastic. Kind of a "minimal" house/techno affair that is more atmospheric and less dry than, say, Luciano's sound. Apparently he recorded this live set at the Planetarium in Paris early last year, which I think is at the Science & Industry Museum. I would recommend checking it out. (313) Ableton DJ Mix
Hey list, how's it goin? So I put together my first all digital dj mix in Ableton. It turned out pretty well, although I found it to be a different experience than spontaneously mixing vinyl for a couple of hours. The main difference being that it took forever, at least compared to knocking out an hour dj mix with turntables/mixer/records. Another difference was the editing: I found that when I revisited the mix the next day, maybe my mood had changed and I would remove a song, rearrange, try some other tune, etc. Typically when I mix records, it's all about what happens at that moment, not thinking about things too much, just grab records, put them together however you see fit, and go with it. Perhaps I will experience more of that down the road after I get a little faster with Ableton. Anyway, check it out if you're interested, would love any feedback you may have too of course! http://www.abrooklynlife.com/2006/07/ablradio_libert.html#more The entire tracklist is on the page above with link to download mp3 or subscribe to the weekly podcast (although not every week is Detroit related). Mix includes songs by: Raiders of the Lost Arp, $tinkworx, Unit 4, Joe Lewis, Gino Soccio, Mr. Fingers, Phuture, DJ Yoav B, David Bowie, and a handful more. Enjoy! Adam

I caught this tour in NYC last week. I thought Dexter live was really great! Really funky stuff in his set. I thought Alden Tyrell was good too, I dig his music, but it didn't seem to fit the mood of the place that evening, or at least it didn't fit my mood rather. Jeff Mills killed it at Pacha Saturday night here in NYC. Haven't been to an uber-club in a while, but it was worth the effort. He played a really fierce and funky set, with the usual suspects thrown in there, i.e., Strings of Life (perfectly timed), Promised Land, The Bells (naturally), and a cool mix of Good Life. All these were surrounded by tons of funky techno records that I didn't know. The boy can mix. Looking forward to the screening of Blue Potential tomorrow evening too. If one does not own a laptop that could be an extra cost to consider. That is not the case for myself, but after staring at a computer screen for 9 hours a day typing code, and then spending countless hours working in ableton and surfing the web on my own time, it's nice to not have to look at a computer screen while DJing, it's my oasis and escape, and let's my eyes rest and ears work for a change. it's not specifically Detroit/313 music, but Tim Sweeney always puts together a great mix set each week. Mixes include everything from old to modern disco, Detroit, Kompakt-ish stuff, DFA stuff, among a lot of others, but done in a way that is cohesive and just a great enjoyable mix. (313) Salsoul Records
Wussup list, can't say I'm terribly familiar with Salsoul, but heard a few things lately that have been sounding pretty alright. What would you guys (and gals) say are the top 5-10 releases on this label to watch out for? I'm alright with represses too... Thanks, Adam

Re: (313) the price we pay...
no kidding man, $10-$14 for a single 12" record is frustrating... i hate to say it, but i've been pricing CD mixers lately. The fact that Warp, Kompakt, Beatport, iTunes, and now Submerge all provide great selections of MP3's is becoming very tempting and hard to ignore. Of course I imagine I will continue buying vinyl, only in smaller quantities, as has been the case for a while now. oh technology... Re: (313) using gmail for 313
I am using gmail for 313 and it seems to be just fine. I set up the account with no problem, but could not initially send to the list. Another 313 subscriber pointed out the HTML vs. Text Email issue and that fixed the problem (which was just a fault of my own). I guess that doesn't really help you all that much, but thought I would share my scenario. It is possible to use gmail though! Good luck! ps - one weird thing is that the account I previously used for 313 still receives the odd piece of email from the list, just 1 email every once in a while...strange. (313) Carl Craig on Beats in Space
I can't remember if anyone here likes Carl Craig or not, but just in case, here is a set that was aired on beats in space last night: http://www.beatsinspace.net/main.html While you're there, perhaps last week's show may be interesting to you also, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area played some records, and played them well. Oh yeah, Tim Sweeney, host of beats in space, is no slouch himself. I've never heard a bad mix set on this show. He covers many genres over many decades in the span of any one show and does it very well. Enjoy! Regards, Adam
Re: (313) DJ Mag Poll
I agree whole-heartedly! The club music pumping at the clothing store is really obnoxious, and it is a real turn-off. I did have a better experience at a small Brooklyn furniture store the other weekend. Walked in and they were playing Kraftwerk. I thought, I don't care what this place sells, I'm going to look at everything in here and enjoy my shopping experience. (Not that this has anything to do with the DJ Mag Poll) Adam >I find it really difficult to buy clothes or shoes these >days because the music most of these shops pump >out is utterly appalling. Re: (313) OT
I thought the Claude Young dj mix was quite good, thanks for pointing that out. I found this set to have an overall haunting feel that sticks with you. Of course it's nice to hear how Claude Young likes to put 'At Les' in the mix as well. Good stuff. I'm a little undecided on the Chez Damier record, I couldn't make up my mind at the record shop, so I left it there. It wasn't bad by any means, it just didn't hit me. Perhaps I'll regret that later, but that's how it goes sometimes. (313) Compost Black Label
Picked up #04 today, I thought both sides were pretty solid. Definitely in the Detroit/C2-inspired realm, at least the long cut. This is the only one of these that I've heard...anyone have/familiar with the other releases? Worth hunting down? Also, I subscribed to the list under another email address, received the welcome to 313 message, started receiving messages but can't seem to send a test that has successfully made it to the list yet. (313) New bits...
Picked up a few new things this weekend, may be of interest. I went searching for the Carl Craig album, which I found, so that was exciting. Great stuff! I was surprised to see there was a new Aril Brikha 12" on Music Man, called Prey For Peace. Highly recommended of course. It sounds like you want it to. This was a nice, exciting surprise at the shop. Recloose - Dust on Peacefrog - a little late on this one, had not heard it at all and was unable to listen to it at the place I found it, but Tom Cox's praises kept ringing in my head. Needless to see was not disappointed at all, great record! Emperor Machine - Part 1 & Part 2 on DC recordings - kind of on that spacey disco tip, Part 1 includes an Idjut Boys mix, which is ridiculously good IMHO. Part 2 is great also, but not as strong as Part 1. Check those if you're into that chicken lips/lindstrom vibe. Tokyo Black Star - Psyche Dance ep - Sonar Kollective - not really sure how to describe, I guess in that space disco realm again, but very atmospheric and truly wonderful, kind of a subtle tune, but ears would surely perk up if this were played. Jesper Dahlback - Polyhouse ep - DX, I love this guy's music. One side has wonderful piano throughout, kind of an old school house feel, but a little tougher I guess. Probably the worst description ever, but check it out... I'm sure this has been mentioned here, but the new Isolee album is great! I really dig it. I find that it is more dancefloor oriented than his previous LP, Rest, which is just fine with me. Several great tunes on it for sure. Enjoy! Adam ps - I heard Lindstrom & Prins Thomas DJ/Play Live yesterday here in NYC and I must say it was spectacular! They played for 3 hours and rocked it. Outside at the PS1 Moma Museum courtyard, 1000 dancing, drunk fools grooving to the best modern disco. Highly recommended if they're in your area, not to be missed!!

Any idea if there's a Talking Heads sample in this tune? I didn't recognize any little bits that stood out, just wondering since the name is similar-ish. I dig the artwork on the sleeve as well... RE: (313) Laurent Garnier
Yep, I agree with you, enjoying it thoroughly. Haven't spent enough time with it to comment on individual tunes yet, or really soaking in all the sounds, but definitely like what I am hearing so far. Seems like a good headphone album, perhaps aside from the rock song "waiting for my plane." Suppose that should be played loudly somewhere. I saw David Byrne perform with Gilberto Gil here in NYC late last year. They put on quite a show! David Byrne dedicated a song to the republican party and George Bush..."we're on a road to nowhere", ha! I am getting married in May and my fiancée and I have chosen "Naïve Melody (this must be the place)" as the song for our first dance...such an incredible song, really great lyrics as well. (313) New US Online Record Shop
Hello 313ers, I wanted to let the stateside folks know about a new online record shop: www.loft101.com Pretty nice selection of house, techno, and getting better. I'm not afiliated, just helping out a friend here in ATL with some advertisement. Site has a nice interface, good listening samples, and other cool features such as the wish list, and customizable email alert tools. Check it out and see what you think. Thanks, Adam www.tranzfuse.com www.latenightessentials.com
RE: (313) record insurance (OT)
>From what I understand they're covered by home owner's or renters insurance policies, at least here in the states. Considered the same type personal property as a mountain bike or television. I just added an extra $10K-20k to my insurance policy regarding the total value of my personal property. This is also where I find real value in having my collection listed in Discogs. Hopefully no one ever has to experience this, but if there were a fire and every piece of vinyl you owned went up in flames, then you have some type of record/proof of what was lost. Of course you may not be able to recover out of print titles, etc. but you could receive some type of financial benefit by having insurance and a record/proof of what was lost. I am certainly no expert on the subject though. I would highly recommend looking into it. We work too hard to buy all these precious vinyls to have someone/thing take them away so easily. Speaking of, it seems like I heard Derrick Carter lost his house/record collection to a fire a few years back. Anyone know about this or am I dreaming this up? (Probably before I get a chance to insure them). and, to be honest, they're about the only thing I own that is worth anything. That was a plus of living on the 11th floor. If some spiderman type could climb 11 floors to get into my flat, he'd have been welcome to my chit. any ideas? sorry to be OT, I have no idea of who to ask though. RE: (313) Rane SSL
I know nothing about this product, but we had John Tejada DJ here in Atlanta last week and he was using it. This was the first I had heard of it, it looked pretty cool. Since I have never used FS either I can't really say if it was better/worse/different, but what I can say is that Tejada is a killer DJ and knew how to use the product quite well. Here is a link to a few photos of him in action, you can't really see the interface in the photos, but his powerbook is over to the right of the turntables, click either forward or backward for a few other photos as well: http://www.latenightessentials.com/gallery/viewer.phtml?gal=tejada&count=23 As I was watching him in action I was wondering if it's a tough transition to go from using a bag of 100+ records at a gig to having an infinite amount of music to choose from that must be searched on one's laptop harddrive. I don't typically know song names, but know I want to play that Perlon song, so I flip to the Perlon sleeve when DJing. Anyone have experience with this? How are the search features set up? Search by artist, title, label, genre, etc?? RE: (313) stuff
Microworld album on transmat is faaantastic!!! Minto told us it was great, so my buddy Dan picked it up at the Festival that day. We listened to it in the hotel room that evening (goes well with whiskey and cokes). Next day I picked up my own copy at festival. Following day I told another friend it was great, so he picked up a copy as well. We listened to it a couple times on the drive back home after movement. My favorite tune is DB. So catchy, smooth, and beautiful! Also, is that a Talking Heads sample in the song TV?? Exotica is lovely as well, great work! Will this be released on vinyl? RE: (313) Omar S
Haven't heard any of them except the Omar S 002 and I think it's great! I made a discovery the other night by pure accident. The vocal cut, B-side (labeled Detroit on mine), second song is the entire vocal from this song: http://www.discogs.com/release/221094 Never heard of it or the artist until a couple nights ago. I picked some records up from my parents house when I drove down for a visit and I had this old "Street Sounds" record with old breakdance songs from the early 80's on it. The only song on the record I was familiar with was 'Din Daa Daa' until I skipped through this song by Midway. And I thought man I know that vocal! Just an interesting tidbit in case this hasn't been discovered or posted previously... RE: (313) Translation Tool (mille plateaux :))
This is a helpful tool to use when the odd site comes through that's not in a language you speak: http://www.google.com/language_tools It can translate web sites if you enter the URL, or you can enter in a block of text for translation. There are many language-to-language translation combinations. Doesn't translate precisely, but well enough so you can clearly understand what the site or article is saying. RE: (313) Carl Finlow (was Fwd: Palette Newsletter 004)
The new Random Factor album, Convergence, is quite excellent IMHO, available for download on iTunes... Serving Principles, Reflections, and Convergence (I Love the "dodgy" vocals) are all incredible songs methinks. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Finlow though. The Convergence LTD album 12" sampler includes the Serving Principles and Reflections songs, really nice, smooth techy-house, beautiful synth sounds :) Highly Recommended Adam http://www.latenightessentials.com http://www.tranzfuse.com -Original Message- From: avant [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 2004 11:39 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Fwd: Palette Newsletter 004 > He's been releasing under the name Random Factor for a while on 20:20 > Vision (afaik newest release came out in March of this year) the "convergence" ep (VIS099) is ok, in particular the john tejada remix... some of the vocals are a little dodgy I thought. The Electricology vinyls and electricology + cd are much better, although for me more for listening to while chilling, than putting into the mix. I've not heard his earlier stuff so I'm not sure how that compares. I didn't realise he recorded as Silicon Scally? - I have a few mixes by this artist and they're very tasty indeed! matt :) --[a]--
RE: (313) bands
I really dig this band called Pinback, one album in particular called Blue Screen Life, really nice stuff, more lush sounds than grindy guitar noise. Also, other band called The Mercury Program, no vocals, just nice lush music. And one other I dig is called American Analog Set, in similar vein as the others, with vocals. Latest album Promise of Love is great. Also, probably a little better known is The Postal Service, more electronic than traditional band though. Pretty cool sounds there. Apparently the vocalist is also in a band called Deathcab for Cutie, but I am not familiar with them. Hope this helps! let's think positively now, we need this to happen...we want this to happen!! And this got me wondering about Kraftwerk's fees. RE: (313) a nice email about downlow records
I second that emotion! I'm new to the list as of this week, and this is the first thread that I read and thought, time to say somethin... I agree wholeheartedly with Andrew's thoughts on Downlow. Minto and the boys got it together. The latest East Island vs Moderator and Convextion releases are absolutely wonderful, as is the not so recent Arne Weinberg 'Beauty in Decay' record. Rumor has it that there is a full length Convextion album coming next year hopefully. I'm patiently waiting. Happy New Year to all. I'm in winter crazy mode which lends itself to more introspective sounds and feelings. so rather than try to put together a list of trax that may or may not be a true representation (I never count the number of plays, too drunk), I've decided to say something that i really feel needs to be said. I dunno 'bout 2003 but I feel Downlow records may well be one of the most consistent, as well as consistently overlooked, labels on earth. recently I posted a review (or blabber more like) about some delsin records that were recently released and that got me to thinking about good techno labels that avoid the cliches of the techno du jour and stay well into what they believe in. Downlow is one of those. and though I believe one of the label heads (minto I think) used to be on list (may still be may not) I haven't heard much about them here. Thats a shame. they've released nothing but top quality stuff by leaders in the game (famous and not) and judging by the soundbytes online for the next release "the moderator vs east island" they ain't slowing down. evidently these guys listen close to what buyers want as well, I've never seen them release less than 4 trax on a disc, sometimes I've seen 5 or 6 even. never got a bad pressing...yet :) and they have full song streaming soundbytes online at their site. plus they're one of the few stateside labels to hold it down for original melodic techno. got that off my chest. phew! and before anyone asks, NO I don't know the label owners personally ($tinkworx and minto), NO I am not affiliated with them in any way except musical taste. just felt that more people should give props where they're due, cuz If you won't... who will? plus most praise nowadays is just blowing sunshine so it's about time someone spoke from the heart. peace y'all. stay true. think forward. anyone got any labels that are dear to the heart/sound that they feel ain't getting proper exposure?
