Re: (313) Detroit synth-pop bands pre-house days?
And here (from a couple years prior), they're a lot more early Modern English than Blancmange: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUx-yNTxrZ4 Each member has his own "Post-Punk Halloween 1980" look (the singer is an Ant, the guitarist is Bernard Sumner, etc). Anyone know if the band recorded any of this earlier material, before they signed? I don't get this at all -- at least not with the CD versions of the albums. I like the way he puts old tracks in a new context, adds in some new content, and makes it all flow. With the CDs, it's not as if he's simply throwing the tracks onto a disc haphazardly -- and even that would be fine with most of those who have neither the resources nor the desire to snap all the 12s up when they're released. I own just about all of the previously released tracks on Black Mahogani, but I know I'm going to listen to I'm Doing Fine, Runaway, etc. through that disc more often than the original vinyl now. RE: [313] Trackmode Party --> Run it down for the curious ones!
Live-wise: Hanna's set was quite enjoyable but his bass guitar didn't sound quite right within the mix. Larry Heard, joined by Jerry the Cat and Norma Jean Bell (I fear I'm forgetting someone here), was in and out under 20 minutes. Though Heard was in a good mood, it sounded from roughly 100' away as if he was playing in another room entirely. Too bad. Aside from the intro bit, KDJ's set was all-new to me. A couple references were made to "Pitch Black City," so maybe that's the name under which the songs will appear? I suppose you could call most of the songs ribald -- very slinky and steamy, not exactly intended for the dancefloor. From what I recall, it was all slow to mid-tempo. Something tells me he's been listening to lots of 1999 and Dirty Mind lately. Andrés played percussion; a gent whose name I didn't catch played keyboards; NJB played some sax; and an interpretive dancer of sorts played KDJ's uh instrument (she spent the remainder of the set beneath a bed sheet). His set concluded with Heard on stage for "Distant Planet." Andy - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is this to say that atmospheres, textures, and a lack of vocals hamstring a track's ability to be expressive? Can you just throw some vocals on an instrumental and instantly have a more 'expressive' song? Is the intended expression maximized when a track is stripped down to a beat and a bass line? Instrumentals with all sorts of atmospheres and textures might take away the likeliness of the track being DIRECT, but I don't see how those factors automatically (or generally) rub out the expressive nature. Just because you're being told WHAT to feel doesn't necessarily mean that it's more expressive than something that is more open to interpretation.
