(313) Dj Bone (Subject Detroit) at Rogue Dublin October 5th

2007-10-02 Thread Christopher O'Grady
Ghetto Jacking with the legendary Dj Bone (Subject Detroit) and Eamonn Doyle
(D1)

Rogue
64 Dame Street
Dublin 2
Doors 10pm
15 Euros

It's no accident that two letters always precede Bone's name whenever he's
on the bill. First and foremost, Bone is a DJ---in the truest sense. When he
spins, it's as if the turntables and the mixer become a physical extension
of his body. He employs every possible technique in the disc jockey arsenal
masterfully: blending, scratching, backspinning, no monitors or headphones;
unrivaled in his use of the fader switch and he incorporates them all into
every set. From his standing room only residency performances to after-hours
spots, he rocks every show as if it's his last.

What the general public and far too many DJs don't realize is that Bone
spins as much for his own enjoyment as he does for the audience. It's a
compulsion that only those who live for what they do possess and those who
don't can never understand: Bone lives to spin-it's a necessary part of his
existence. His dedication to the art of dance music and DJing is so
untainted and intense that the tales of his confrontational encounters with
flashy booking agents and "big name" djs are already the stuff of legend. No
hype or trends, just a relentless drive and passion to take the party to
another level. That's why he's one of the few spin masters other DJs hate to
follow.

Dj Bone will be at Rogue on October 5th supported by D1's Eamonn Doyle for a
night of shock and awe on three turntables. Be sure not to miss this rare
and exclusive event.

I really appreciate the kind words. I have had an extremely positive
reaction to this mix. I put quite a bit of work into making the play lists
for my monthly mixes, pathways for a musical journey. I recently moved to
Dublin, Ireland and I started my first residency here last Thursday. The
style of music was well received.

I have Mays mix all lined up I just have not hit the record button on it
yet. There are simply too many good tracks on Beatport these days!

Thanks again.

Hi there.

I haven't seen any replies from people yet, so I wanted to get in touch to
voice my thanks for sharing this. I have been listening to it on and off
over the last week and have been really digging it.

In a way, I am a little surprised because my knee-jerk reaction was 'eugh,
trancey' but to be honest, that is a bollocks reaction anyway.

I find it ideal for my drive to work, and it also works well in the gym!
Bonus!

Anyway, top stuff.

RE: (313) Aril Brikha

2007-04-07 Thread Christopher O'Grady
Tiesto is probably a better example than Derrick May for the point you are
trying to make. Aril Brikha is a modest little guy from Sweden. I have
this wonderful memory of dancing like a maniac directly in front of his
setup at a live performance in Paris. After his set I said "thank you!" and
he replied "no, thank you! You really kept my energy going!" (or something
to that effect).

What's not to respect?

I listened to his Kompakt release several times today trying to see why
anyone would call it crap; I like it very much actually. But either opinion
is subjective.

I realized what a waste of energy it was to think of music in terms of love
or hate, good or crap. I either like something or I am indifferent. But
that takes the fun out of beard stroking techno snobbery.

Judging from the responses already I am going to assume that this post is
going to spark off a few more interesting responses.

It has been a while since I have been back on the list...

I forgot how brutal "313" can be to artists and their releases. I would pay

I have to sort through so much "garbage" music every day.

RE: (313) MIDI controllers for dummies

2007-03-12 Thread Christopher O'Grady
The auto beat matching in traktor is and will always be crap. Not that I
mind... It keeps the 12 year olds frustrated.

I have been playing with traktor using my oxygen 8 for about a year now just
for kicks. If you take the time to make precise beat grids for tracks then
you NEVER have to deal with tempo again. It takes some effort to sit down
and make them but I can't imagine trying to get my tempo without a pair of
1200s or CDJs anyways.

However... The main problem I am having with traktor and taking the time to
set these beat grids is the fact that you cannot write them to the id3 tag
of the mp3 itself. It must only be a few kb of information and it seems
easy enough to implement. If you ever lose your collection or want to move
the tracks to another computer you lose all your hard work making them.

Make beat grids... It's an absolute laugh being able to play anything in
your crate without the initial beat matching process. Ripped vinyl can be
tedious because you have to set anywhere from 3 to 10 grid markers in them.
But pretty much everything on beatport is digital and you only need one at
the beginning.

I am only saying this because it seems like 90% of the people I have talked
to who are using traktor have no idea that they exist.

Heck... Once NI start including beat grids into ID3 tags I don't see why ALL
of the tracks sold on beatport would not have them already. And as long as
it's not a proprietary thing I don't see why they would not work with torq
and all of the other clones out there.

I just moved to Ireland and my decks are still in Paris.

*sigh*

Can anyone recommend a halway-decent controller for use with Traktor? I have
been meaning to get

Just curious to hear some recommendations I guess.

Did "he" actually do it? I little bird told me that Carl Craig wrote the
song but I took that with a grain of salt. I just never sounded like pure
"Derrick May" to me, but it sounded exactly like something Carl Craig would
have written. I asked Carl about it and he said he did not remember... Now
I find the original "12 version on a system 7 CD as a collab when the vinyl
only credits May?

Just wondering if anyone had any info as to how Icon came to be and who
actually wrote it. Icon is probably one of my top 3 tracks of all time.

RE: (313) Icon

http://www.discogs.com/release/45170

I slsked "system 7 and derrick may - mysterious traveller - 04 - icon
(montage mix).mp3" and it is exactly the same as the "original version" on
the original vinyl release [transmat 021].

http://www.discogs.com/release/2944

That innovator version of icon was really disappointing as was pretty much
everything else on there. Derrick May for Noobs I guess...

Icon was one of those songs that I must have played a billion times. When
my first copy wore out and started skipping at the 30 second mark (as usual)
I went out and bought another copy.

This CD version saves me the trouble of ripping it myself for FS.

The Montage Mix on Innovator has no beats, pretty much.

This one is the one I have: http://www.discogs.com/release/27136
Things are mislabeled on mine, so the other two versions may have
similar mistakes.

It used to be interesting to say I am from Detroit as I have floated around
Europe for the last 6 odd years. Lately in Ireland the word Detroit from my
mouth is followed by "put your hands up!" from theirs, with the obligatory
little dance.

Ohh... I'm sorry I meant Canada. I am from Canada sorry...

A lovely city...

I did the most hilarious interview with Fedde Le Grand and he
actually made the record as a tribute to Detroit as the home of house
music and the Warehouse. nothing to do with techno. Someone needs
to read up on his history. LOL.

2007-02-22 Thread Christopher O'Grady
I saw him in Dublin about a few months ago as well and I really enjoyed his
set, deep techy and funky. I spent most of the night on the dancefloor. No
regrets. Dirtybird 006 Claude Vonstroke - Beware of the bird is a brilliant
release. But I am a sucker for that sound anyways, especially the stuff
coming out on Audiomatique right now.

First I thought he was German and now I find out he is from the burbs of
Detroit. But I guess Barclay Crenshaw does not exactly roll off the tongue
like Claude Vonstroke.

I looked him up on imdb - he was location manager for Batman & Robin
or something! There's one song on his CD that is Bukem like drum 'n'
bass that I really like. Maybe it's near the end.

Ahh the joys of growing up with channel 62 in Detroit.

Thanks for the memories.

I found another on youtube with the history of the show.
