(313) New D1 Release: Educution - Ting Chuggy EP (DONE039)
Educution / Ting Chuggy EP New D1 Release now available on MP3 / WAV from http://www.d1.ie First vinyl pressing sold out... Repress should be available early next week. Educution Ting Chuggy Vol 1 DONE039 Preview: http://www.d1.ie/index.php?intLabelID=1&intReleaseID=54 Educution : Ting Chuggy Vol 1 D1 continue their mission of restoring the health of house music with a bouncin' new E.P. from Dublin's Educution. Taking a short break from producing his forthcoming debut album to bring you four new trax of pure warehouse disco with a distinct Chicago flavour and more concern for your hips than aesthetics. Ting Chuggy came to the party unshowered, unshaved, downright stankin' and is gonna make sure everybody leaves reeking. 'Housezilla' kicks us off with a jakk'd up loop from the JB's 'Control' and works the pitch in a crazy style until the sax transforms into an old timey car horn. 'Extravageansai' (Gaelic for Christmas jumper day) pushes up the heat working filtered disco textures over ripping house beats until it finally implodes into unabashed synth flute melodies. 'Downward Spiral' deepens the groove, everything worked in a gentler style while retaining the party spirit. Last but by no means least, 'On the Ron Again' harks back to where it all began, taking two loops from a filthy Ron Hardy mixtape recorded at the Music Box and chopping them to pieces. To top all this off we've included a pumpin locked groove at the end of each side so in theory the party will never end. "The world of Ting Chuggy is a dangerous, threatening one; his towers of undulating magnificence are toppling all over my keyboards and making it harder for me to achieve dancefloor smashdom than it was during the days before I heard him. After listening to the magnificent 'Volume One' I am tempted to convert my career to one based in a pizza franchise, far far away from my beloved studio. Arise King Chuggy!" - Max Tundra Also... (313) New D1 release - Micronost [Done037]
New D1 Release out this week on 12" Vinyl and Digital [WAV and MP3] The Vinyl will be available from today. Digital available from the D1 site - http://www.d1.ie Micronost [aka David Donohoe] serves up four tracks of obsessively tight, compressed RnB grooves built from fragmented microsounds, clipped percussion, sleazy infectious basslines and synthlicks. Awkwardly placed vacuous vocals interweave with the glossy minutely detailed rhythms producing something which simultaneously revels in and despises the empty funk of a popular music entirely based on narcissism and capitalism. His first Track mix is more in keeping with his recent stripped down productions on Tuning Spork, with a sharply produced linear reworking which focuses in on the original tracks vocals and shimmering synth riff. His second string mix sees him turn in another of his signature Techno-Funk classics, as only Dan Curtin knows how. Long standing D1 collaborator Mark Broom, effortless as always, rearranges Phoenix into two pulsating 4/4 grooves, with the originals haunting string line riding on top throughout both. Again, as with recent D1 releases, this is strictly limited vinyl run. Ikeaboy: Sleeper Cell EP 1. Dayna Preview: http://www.d1.ie/easyedit/previewmp3/dayna_samp.mp3 or http://tinyurl.com/2agvvo 2. Well I always wanted to make music that couldn't be dated so this shouldn't make much difference provided I was successful. These tracks were made before I moved from the MPC to the computer set up now which restricted me from pouring fashionable effects on them which, I think, helped them not to be easily dated. I can still confidently stand behind these tracks because even when they were written 6 years ago they were out of step with the Dj charts of the time so they can't fall out of fashion if they never were in fashion. I still enjoy them and they still surprise me despite the fact I've heard them over and over. So here it is -the long lost Ikeaboy EP I hope you enjoy it. Dayna - Dub influenced Detroit techno co-written with Mote. Doesn't sound like Basic Channel or dubstep but a more of a cinematic vibe. In retrospect it reminds me of a tougher Etienne De'Creicy's Super Discount record. Hitch, built around a djembe sample played by Ben Small (thank you Ben!) Again in retrospect, Jeff Mills' huge influence on me can be heard but thankfully not in a way you could accuse me of any obvious plagiarism. I was getting tired of repetition at the time hence the twists, turns and sharp lefts in the arrangement. Animus - The kicks on the 1st and 3rd beat with a large snare on the 4th formed the basis for two interlocking bass parts a silvery synth riff, some strings, a little acid and that's it. Alien funk. Unfocused - Another wandering arrangement in this electro track taking in growling bass, glassy chords and a creamy middle 8. The return after the middle 8 gives me a happy upbeat feeling unusual for my stuff." Re: (313) robotnik dj style?
no blue notes - so he's following a purist European tradition the second part..well, that's fukt up odd because his music has blue notes throughout it so he must be only playing new productions it must sound like dance music on prozac I think he still plays the odd old style set.. but mostly he's playing pretty banging techno from what I can make out.. maybe someone out there has heard him DJ recently ? I'm actually pretty ignorant to his earlier stuff, I've no idea about any of the Italo Disco stuff.. if that's the right term ? Eamonn
Re: (313) robotnik dj style?
Without a direct quote or some explanation of what he means by that or why I wouldn't write him off. It could mean just as Matt says below - but damn, that's a loaded statement. I hope there comes some explanation soonish. Eamonn - did he ever explain that statement to you? Well.. I was just asking him what kind of stuff he was DJing these days.. he said he hated blues notes in music.. and black vocals... but that he used to like otis redding. He pretty much dismissed 90's techno and seemed pretty much unaware of anything that had come out of detroit since 1990. He said it was just his preference now, that he didn't like or play black music.. not in any way racist [didn't come across like that anyway].. just seemed like a ridiculous categorization to me! It's about as ludicrous as that stupid MOBO thing [music of black origin awards].. I mean, where the hell do you draw the line ? Irish traditional Music [which has it's roots in Egyptian and Eastern European Music] influenced american country music, which among others influenced Stevie Wonder. etc etc etc Robotnik's a VERY nice guy by the way ! Eamonn
Re: (313) robotnik dj style?
I haven't heard him DJ ever, but I had an interesting conversation with him last month .. he told me that he doesn't like playing "black" music .. which I thought was kinda strange. I'm pretty sure he was coming at it from an aesthetic view point.. still weird though !! He suggested I try it sometime .. which would have been pretty difficult.. I'd have had to throw away 90% of my record collection ! But honestly, that sound is caned to death here in SF and I would prefer to hear his take on newer dance sounds. thanks jimmy hbot

I can't speak highly enough about the guys Pure Plastic. I've never come across as genuine a group of people in all my dealings with any DJs , producers and distributors over the years ! There's a really interesting mix of music coming out of their distribution now as well. They're not exactly the most "in fashion" distributor so it seems they tend to get overlooked in favor of the likes of Kompakt etc, which is a shame. Also.. Mark Brooms back catalog is awesome.. Americans note that sometimes you can get cheaper tickets to Dublin than London. If you've never been to Dublin, I rate it (as a bloody American tourist) with Paris, London and Berlin, with the added bonus that the locals mostly understand you when you speak. 2nd: RyanAir can be a false economy. If you're in London, it takes about 15 pounds or more to get out to the airport, and it's another 10 Euro into town in Dublin. Once you take all the incidental transport costs into account, it's cheaper to take the Bus/Ferry, plus you get that chance you've been missing to get violently seasick crossing the water. Last summer I took my kids to London, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin, going the 'discount air' route. Next time I'm sticking to trains -- at least you go city center to city center. Getting up at 4 AM to catch a bus from Amsterdam to the Rotterdam airport to fly back to London was a low point of the trip. RE: (313) URGENT. Label people/Musicians
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I guess it would be great if they could generate some money for small labels... But, I dunno, I'd just be a little nervous about the fact that no one seems to have any contact asking permission or anything. But, you are right Marsel, I guess there's nothing to worry about just yet as nothings been sold, but I don't know, guess it's best everyone is aware? _ Thanks for putting us onto this.. It all seems very suspect, there's a lot of music up there, our own included. Somehow I have a feeling we won't be getting a call from them anytime soon ! Eamonn / D1
(313) US / EU: Mani's knee jerk response
Kamal wrote: "I can understand where people are coming from with their angry responses as a knee jerk reaction, I cannot see this stance holding water after a sober read of his initial post." I assure you that our response was not a knee jerk one, neither was our reading of his original less than sober. It is his original post that was anything but sober. While it is obvious that Mani spent a long time considering his position, there is no indication that he spent nearly enough considering his post. "on the same note i would say that if european promoters are getting the same treatment from american talent, STOP BOOKING THEM" You are correct in saying that we have the right to stop booking American artists if we have been let down by them in the past. As does Mani with European artists. And this is precisely what we have done. However this was not enough. It was then necessary to gather a greater understanding of American artists and find perhaps lesser known artists who were and are more deserving of our support and booking fees. Simply shutting your doors is, in your words, a knee jerk reaction. I was not being merely flippant when I suggested a trip to Europe might benefit Mani greatly. "maybe his slogan should be "Saving America from bad manners". Certainly one way of saving yourself from bad manners is to never let anyone into your house again. But let it be no surprise to you that this act will be considered the height of bad manners by a lot of perfectly mannered people who will never again receive an invitation. Eamonn / D1 Dublin
(313) EU Boycott : An Irish response
To view Mani's remarks with serious concern is neither to overreact to them, nor to misconstrue them. The plain fact that his comments were ill conceived, poorly phrased and badly judged is not something for those offended to overlook, but for him to redress. Since he has made the decision to post them on a forum such as this, then he must stand by them and bear full responsibility for any insult they have caused. Moreover, it is not wrong to view his comments as political in nature, as the use of the term "boycott" was , I believe, his. A "boycott" is a withdrawal from commercial or social relations as a punishment, or protest (OED). Added to this, his rant had more than a little of the tone of a rallying call to other US promoters. The only reasonable inference from his regrettable diatribe is that any American promoter who books a European artist other than those few specifically mentioned had better prepare for an overpaid, talentless egotist to show up. While it may be clear to some who know Mani that this is not what he meant, it is far from clear from his words, since this is in fact what he said. This is clearly outrageous. It may come as a surprise for you to hear that a great number of American artists arrive in Europe underprepared, play sloppy and less than inspiring sets, lazily play the sets they think Europeans want to hear rather than music that faithfully represents their own work, yet do demand huge fees, business class flights etc. (see your own list of complaints). This is if they bother to show up at all. In Dublin alone, it has become something of a gamble to choose to attend an event with an American headlining act. We have, however, always viewed these as exceptional occurrences, and never considered the option of a blanket ban on American acts. We continue to support the music we love by booking American Djs and producers for our club and annual DEAF festival, releasing work by American artists on our Dublin based label, D1 Recordings, and music from Irish artists through the Submerge distributed D1aspora. We also, of course, continue to support our own homegrown talent, most of whom yes, have day jobs, and yes, often outshine our trans-atlantic friends. In order to understand the European scene, I respectfully suggest that a trip to Europe is indeterminably more useful than a trip to India, particularly since said trip has given him the impression that Europe is populated in the main by smug, self-satisfied, indolent fatcats of little talent. To add further insults to injury, the loss of American jobs to the Far East due to corporate globalisation strategies is somehow another reason to be not just angry, but "DISGUSTED" with the European electronic music scene. This from a man who, we are told, has been doing some deep thinking of late. We hope you can manage not to be too angry with European artists over the loss of American jobs, since we have always managed not to be "DISGUSTED" with the American techno community for Irish jobs moving to, among other places, your spiritual home, India. Furthermore, Mani's ill-advised publication of a limited "safe-list" of European artists rather embarrassingly associates them with his xenophobic ravings. Fortunately, we can spot the potential embarrassment, and ignore this. Less fortunately, Mani did not. Finally, it is saddening to hear that Mani "cannot sit by any longer and watch what was created here [in the US] get redone and sold back to us at import prices." Quite apart from dismissing the work of European artists as a mere rehash of American music, which is an insult in itself and I'm sure will raise an eyebrow even with those on his safe-list, he fails to appreciate the influence Europe has had on American techno, and the valuable support Europe has lent it. It is an unfortunate fact that since its inception, American techno has enjoyed little interest at home, but has been the subject of intense admiration in Europe. It is not the fault of Europeans that the vast majority of American youth would rather listen to Linkin Park than Kenny Larkin. Just as it is not the fault of Europeans that the vast majority of Americans would rather watch basketball than soccer, thereby forcing many American soccer players to ply their trade in Europe. Or that jazz is enjoying a surge in popularity in Europe while suffering difficulties in the US, its home. Now that techno is finally enjoying some of the home support it has always deserved, it is wrong to try to consolidate that support by shutting the door to the continent that has helped it stay alive through the barren years of US indifference. (313) Dublin Electronic Art Festival seeks writers
DEAF IN PRINT Now in its 3rd year, the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival is currently seeking writers to contribute to the first of two official festival publications for 2004. Designed by our resident designer Niall Sweeney, DEAF In Print will be published in two parts. Part 1 will be launched in June 2004 to coincide with the start of the festival's Summer Programme when 1 copies will be distributed free of charge in record & clothes shops, cafes, music venues and bars throughout Dublin, Galway, Cork and Waterford. DEAF In Print will also be distributed internationally as part of the promotion campaign for DEAF 2004. DEAF In Print is intended to encourage greater dialogue about the electronic arts in an Irish context; however, all subjects relating to the electronic arts past, present and future - in Ireland and elsewhere - will be considered. Contributions may be submitted in any format or style, although it is preferred that they emphasise a discursive approach rather than adopting the more traditional artist feature / interview format. Contributions must be in by 30th April 2004. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Dublin Electronic Arts festival @ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] New Visitor / Mark Broom album on D1
Catalog Number - DONE021 Label - D1 Recordings Artist - Visitor [Mark Broom / Dave Hill] Title - Passing Through Format - CD + Double gatefold vinyl Dublin's D1 Recordings mark their 21st release with "Passing Through" a new double album by Visitor aka Mark Broom. Mark is known primarily for his futuristic, funky techno releases. His debut album, the critically acclaimed "Angie Is a Shoplifter" appeared in 1996, alongside a wealth of material recorded under a dizzying variety of aliases - Visitor, Midnight Funk Association, Rue East, Repeat, Kape I'll Miester, Sympletic, Ted Howler Rhythm Combo, Kruton and Eco Tourist. Visitor first surfaced in D1's studio in Dublin back in 1996 after mark DJ'd for D1's clubnight "Model One". Mark alongside his recording partner Dave Hill have since released several Visitor 12"s for D1, including the now classic Model Two/ Basement life ep, which recently resurfaced with reworkings by, Decal, Donnacha Costello and Rue East. Dublin has become a second home for Mark where he is due to start a new residency at D1's new clubnight. He continues to record new Visitor material on his regular trips to Dublin. This double album, [released on Double Gatefold Vinyl and CD] promises to become another landmark release in Brooms already illustrious career. Mark's numerous releases vary in style from his harder edged Rue East productions through to his well renowned abstract outings as Midnight funk association. As Visitor, Mark successfully blends both styles to produce what is undoubtedly some of the finest deep melodic techno to come out of Europe in recent years. A 12" single from the album will follow with remixes by Mark under his Rue East guise; it will also feature new unreleased material. The single, "Past Present Future", will be accompanied by a video by Dublin's FUSELAGE. Mark and Dave will be performing live as Visitor for the first time at D1's free live showcase gig during DEAF [Dublin Electronic Arts Festival] in October. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If Dublin's an option for meeting up, then D1 would love to accomadate. We've a load of gigs on anyway, but we could hook something up specificly if needed. We've also got Dublin's version of Sonar/DEMF planned for September - DEAF [dublin electronic arts festival] .. Just a thought ... Re: [313] UR-Killer whale / Dubllin Bargin Bin
About 400 copies of "Revolution for a change" / UR showed up in a Dublin bargin warehouse sale about 2 years ago. They were selling them for 10p each !! They were dumped in with about 10,000 other records. Mostly old Network stuff.
