Distortion records. Though you have to shop on discogs first as the shop is
literally filled with records
https://www.discogs.com/seller/distortionrecords/profile

Concerto on Utrechtsestraat is one of the largest shops in the country. Worth a
visit, they have all kinds of weird gems in the bins.

Cool: here’s some place/club/bar/shops/restaurat that I found to be worth a
visit: before going, check to see if they might suit you and let me know if
you’d like more in-depth information

(PS: you may also check this Reddit sub, which I found to be quite useful
https://www.reddit.com/r/amsterdam_rave/

Clubs (I more on the dark hypnotic techno side of music -Mulero, DVS1, Svreca
etc- and that most nights were mainly house night with a relaxed vibe, so not
exactly my kind of music, but…)
Melkweg: I went for “techno Tuesday” with Edit Select and music was ace. Crowd
is very mixed up, with lots of tourist but it’s free and it was well worth a
visit… near is Paradiso: I went for Killer Mike concert and it was good, but
depends on program… (Note: Melkweg – Paradiso -> very toursitic zone)
Garage Noord, Lofi, Club Raum: outside of the centre (3-4 km from Amsterdam
center), small but quite famous spot… check lineups and see if they could be of
some interest
Radion: closed in august, lineups seem interesting for september
Nachbar: very small club/bar in the centre

Bars/cafe/restaurant
Mikkeller bar (near Melkweg but just outside the tourist route) if you are into
creaft beers (and burgers)
Lourens (Jordaan) for coffe and top notch-pastry (no sits, standing, good for
breakfast)
Eye Filmmuseum bar/terrace and Pllek restaurant/bar (Noord): to chill/work with
beautyful view of the canal
Helling 7 (Noord): restaurant with a beautiful view on dock (check REM, too on
the other side of the canal)
La Oliva (Jordaan): cool tapas and spanish food/wine

Many vintage clothing shop around town, with cool brands (Margiela, Comme,
etc): if interested, let me know!

Recors Shops: apart from second hand (many), I suggest a visit to
In-deep-N-dance record store and Rush Hour (both Jordaan, center)

Have fun!

Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe as a vibe would be alright, just don't ask advice

Why leave strangers wondering if you're a douchebag, when you can wear
a Beatport T Shirt and remove all doubt?

http://www.beatportbrandshop.com/?utm_campaign=bp_brandshop_launch_111009

The most interesting thing to deconstruct here is the price. They're
paying about $7 per shirt delivered, and charging $24 (and $28 for
women, which is rank discrimination imho), which means they're selling
Design and Image here, not just trying to promote their business. Are
there really people out there who think it's worth a $15-20 premium to
have a shirt advertising that they buy downloads from Beatport?

And I'll pre-respond -- yes I know respected 313-ers work at Beatport
now, and I know it's not really about Detroit techno. It just vexed
me.

(313) once again... Berliners! September 24-27

2009-09-04 Thread Emiliano Zani

Landing September 24th, departing late afternoon of 27th with
a bunch of friends.

Line ups are not stellar, but quite good:
Thursday is warmup...
Friday there are Monolake+Modeselektor+Coldcut at WMF...
or Steve Rachmad at Arena... Peter Kruder at Weekend
or Stil Vor Talent night at Watergate...

Saturday we'll go straight for Chris Liebing at Berghain. If they
won't let us in: Vakant+Dumb Unit night at Watergate or something
else...

So many clubs to go, so little time ;)

Anyone on the list here?

Berlin in a few weeks as I will be from August 21st,

Club line ups look good, Berghain not announced just yet but we'll be there,
think we'll be doing something like Tresor Friday for
Blake Baxter and Octave One and Weekend for the roof! Saturday some mates are
playing at Tape with the Workshop crew so we'll be
there before heading to Berghain.

Sunday in a ditch / Bar 25 / Visionaere.

Carlos? James; you back there yet? Roman; you still on here? Anyone else?

After Berlin I'm in Budapest for a few days, then walking in Romania for about
10, then in Bulgaria (Sofia, maybe Varna if I have
time) before flying back on the10th Sept, so if there's any list members in
those parts would like to meet up let me know.

It might be worth noting that the genre of Acid is now 20 years old. It's
incredible to think that give or take a few dips here and there, a genre that
manifested from experimenting with a Bass emulator (? - sorry you have to
forgive my technical ignorance) is still going. There's something unique about
it that I guess still sounds distinct after 2 decades - and it holds true to a
certain extent about techno's origins about futuristic music. It retains that
element.

I remember Laurent performed at a party here in the wrong
neighborhood where some shadiness went down. A small crew of 'agents
of darkness' strolled in with their concealed weapons. Some gunfire
took place and maybe someone actually got shot. Fuzzy memories where
I think someone was wounded, but nothing serious.

I also remember Sonar 1999 when Rich, Jeff Mills, and Laurnet Garnier
were all riding bumper cars together--with much
'bloodthirstiness'. That was definitely surreal.

Re: (313) robotnik dj style?

2006-07-28 Thread Emiliano Zani

Try not to get too mixed up about a statement like that. It's not uncommon
for people in some European countries, like Italy and Germany, to refer to
a particular style of music as "Black" music. Whatever kind of music that
is is a very loose genre, but it usually refers to Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk,
etc. If Robotnick says he doesn't like playing "Black" music, it probably
means he doesn't like Sister Sledge and "We Are Family" or 50 Cent. He's
not a racist, or proably saying anything racist. He's just a 55 year old
man from the kind of not racially sensitive country that would define a
musical genre as "Black".

...

He also doesn't speak very good English.

Yeah, right: I agree.

As Starbucks calls "espresso" that horrendous and burnt-tasting
black water; and says it loud and proud from zillion dollars
TV commercials, seen by millions of people...
As Pizza Hut calls "pizza" that strange thing covered with a
white melted tire they call "mozzarella"; and says it loud and
proud from zillion dollars TV commercials, seen by millions
of people...

So I think that Alexander Robotnick can use the espression
"black music" to refer to some general "american" or "hiphop"
or "rnb" or "whatever he means-music", once in a lifetime, in
a private conversation, heard by 2-3 person (I suppose) and
maybe without speaking a very good english
;)

I've spent a reasonable amount of tiume with the guy and I can tell you
with some certainty that he is not some kind of kooky White Supramatist.
He's a very sweet, nice guy who is very opinionated about Espresso. He
also doesn't speak very good English.

As for his live set: it does both of what you would want. He plays new
electro/techno stuff as well as performs a few of hits live. Usually, he
plays "Dance Boy Dance", "Problems...", and one or two others. His show is
very fun and high energy and I'm certain most people on lthis list will
enjoy it.

It's not crazy, actually. Anyone who is trying to make music needs to
be on myspace, if for no other reason than to prevent someone from
poaching your professional name.

It is also an excellent way for people to stay informed about artists
they care about -- show announcements, new tunes, etc. The networking
aspect also means that you can potentially get people to listen to
your music, just because you're a friend of a friend of a friend.
Careers have been made on myspace, and while that won't probably
happen to you or me, it's too big to ignore.

That being said, I hate the way the pages look, how slow the servers
are, the preponderance of kids acting dumb, the unbelievably awful way
you get hit by music every time you go to most people's profile, and
the fact that it's owned by that fascist Rupert Murdoch.

Re: (313) Ableton DJ Mix

2006-07-18 Thread Emiliano Zani

A different experience than spontaneously mixing vinyl for
a couple of hours. The main difference being that it took forever,...

Yeah right: same for me... Ableton gives me so much (too much?)
opportunity that everytime I start mixing with it, I found something
new I could do, so I stop mixing and start sampling, ecc ecc...
After 3 hours, I haven't mix anything so I say to myself: this
would be useful for the next mix... The problem's that the "mix"
never comes :-/
Probably I'm still in a baby-staring-at-candies mood: I want to
eat the whole thang... Hopefully, I'll grow and make some
choices about what I *really* like to do with Live.

By now, I'm gonna download and hear what Adam likes to
do with it ;)

Typically when I mix
records, it's all about what happens at that moment, not thinking
about things too much, just grab records, put them together however
you see fit, and go with it.

I know it's really old-fashion, but I still have problems not
using records... cds and file names looks exactly all the same,
without covers or colors or anything that helps me, and I'm still
desperatly trying to organize the in categories, bpms, ecc...
But when I look at them, they don't tell me anything.

But when you grab some records, look at the colors, the picture,
ecc and THEY tell you "play me, it's my time".
Probably that's because in my mind, I still "see" a mix like a
sequence of black plastic... I have to upgrade ;)

Hey list,

how's it goin? So I put together my first all digital dj mix in
Ableton. It turned out pretty well, although I found it to be a
different experience than spontaneously mixing vinyl for a couple of
hours. The main difference being that it took forever, at least
compared to knocking out an hour dj mix with turntables/mixer/records.
Another difference was the editing: I found that when I revisited the
mix the next day, maybe my mood had changed and I would remove a
song, rearrange, try some other tune, etc. Typically when I mix
records, it's all about what happens at that moment, not thinking
about things too much, just grab records, put them together however
you see fit, and go with it. Perhaps I will experience more of that
down the road after I get a little faster with Ableton.

Anyway, check it out if you're interested, would love any feedback you
may have too of course!

The entire tracklist is on the page above with link to download mp3 or
subscribe to the weekly podcast (although not every week is Detroit
related).

Mix includes songs by: Raiders of the Lost Arp, $tinkworx, Unit 4, Joe
Lewis, Gino Soccio, Mr. Fingers, Phuture, DJ Yoav B, David Bowie, and
a handful more.

Enjoy!

you picked a good time to visit!

Laurent Garnier's supposed to be playing live at Berghain on Thursday 18
May (it's not on his website though so not sure if it's confirmed yet).

Andrew Weatherall's at Weekend on Friday 19 May.

Theo Parrish is also at Weekend on Saturday 20 May.

also on the Saturday Berghain/Panorama Bar have Vitalic (live), Fidel,
Ben Clock, Booka Shade (live) and a few others - even if that's not your
thing you should still go as the club is one of - if not the - best in
the world. it also gets going late (4/5am onwards) so you can check
Theo first.

on the Sunday Berghain/Panorama have an outdoor Hardwax party with
Rhythm & Sound feat. Paul St.Hilaire, DJ Pete, Ricardo Villalobos,
Soundhack and a very special guest from Detroit who they're not
announcing.

stores:

Hardwax www.hardwax.com
Space Hall www.spacehall.de
Rotation www.rotation-records.de

Hi all,
I'm hitting Berlin from the 16th -21st next month and wanted to know
what record stores I should check out, obviously apart from Hardwax.

Also, anything happening club/partywise?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Peace,

CURTIN, Dan: Tricks (part 1) (Tuning Spork Germany)
-I think this is some of that stuff he played when I posted about his set
at
Spacebase fairly recently. Very nice stuffs, and most of it rather
different

than most of his output. Perhaps it's boompty techno? Shove that in your
sub-sub-genre critique! ;)

Love that "Tuning Spork label", at least for the cover art and the name of

DABRYE feat DOOM: Air (Ghostly International US)
-Just ordered this today on the strength of the clip and a coupla
recommendations. Sounds dope! Really original, while MF DOOM is sounding
uncharacteristically fierce with his delivery (in a good way).

WRIGHT, Bobby/KENNETH COATS/ROY DAVIS/STEVE POINDEXTER/BRIAN HARRIS/ANTON
MITCHELL: Sex Chants (Chicago Undergound US)
-This is that thing I mentioned in passing the other day. The Anton
Mitchell
and Davis/Poindexter/Harris tracks are excellent. The former sounds like
80s
Chicago house in a circus tent, the latter sounds kinda like what you
might
imagine with these three guys - on the deeper side of their output, I
guess.

Good trumpet in it anyway, if a fairly grim recording.

LARKIN, Kenny: Azimuth (Rushhour Holland)
-Very happy for this repressing

CURTIN, Dan: Tricks (part 1) (Tuning Spork Germany)
-I think this is some of that stuff he played when I posted about his set
at
Spacebase fairly recently. Very nice stuffs, and most of it rather
different

than most of his output. Perhaps it's boompty techno? Shove that in your

SIENKIEWICZ, Jacek: Double Secret (Recognition Poland)
-The dude is on fire. This one is slightly slower and perhaps even housier
(??? in a hard to explain way) than a lot of his recent stuff. Very nice
though

DJ YOAV B: Language Of The Open Heart EP (Delsin Holland)
-Late, I know, but really enjoying this. Very ballsy intro to the first
track on the B-side

REDSHAPE: Shaped World EP (Delsin Holland)
-Sounds like a Kraftwerk geiger counter meets C2's bassline from his remix
of "Ain't Changin'" to my ears

INNERVISIONS presents HENRIK SCHWARZ/AME/DIXON feat DERRICK L CARTER:
Where

We At (Sonar Kollektiv Germany)
-It's about this [] shy of progressive, but works really well. Especially
loud. I really like the vocal, but not sure if I should be embarassed
about

that. Don't care

PUNGTANG: Sub Seducer (Planet E US)
-Wooo!

I'm an old f&*ker so I haven't been able to erase the idea of tatoos
being blurry blue anchors on the arms of grotty old sailors... but I
really like the idea of kids getting all sorts of ink. Something to
show their grandchildren.

I can't think of what would be the ultimate 313 tatoo... there are a
lot of people with the Plastikman tatoo, though, and that has a
certain appeal as a design, independent of any ubercoolische
connotations. A tatoo of "313" might be cool, but fetishizing a
telephone area code is probably less cool than a drum machine.

A Drexciyan Wave Jumper tatoo, though, would rule, or the UR logo.
Speaking of which, the UR logo always struck me as being very similar

to the 'UR' on old Maxell cassettes. Coincidence, or sharp graphical
appropriation?

The idea wad drowing around me for years: a tattoo to
represent endless love for music... But I've never catched
THE right idea.

Fab and this topic gives me 50% of inspiration and I started
thinking about something concerning ELECTRONIC music.
A friends gives me the other 50% inspiration, showing me his
Roland 909 and a wonderful 808.

So, what's the best way to celebrate electro, hiphop, acid,
techno? Paying respect to the 808 & 909s that gave birth
to everything.
That's it! An "808" tattoo on my arm, but using some sort
of "909-ish" fonts ;)

The uneducated masses, definitly no... But I started with Public Enemy, then
go back to Afrika Bambaataa, and to electro, and I started to understand
more about Kraftwerk. Then I began to love hip-hop, that became hip-house
for a (fortunatly) short time, and (guess what) this songs boosted my
interest for
house and Chicago... 300 miles away from Chicago was Detroit and so I
started

to listen to some techno...
And now, 18 years later (rgh), I'm signed to a 313 mailing list, tryin'
to

learn more.

So, probably Juan Atkin will never be recognized by the masses, but maybe
an award would give him some more fame, more bucks and (maybe) 200 more
kids will begin to be more interested in techno...
...And we'll have 200 more people who can listen to us when we talk about
