I just bought the new Moodymann record. Whilst the music was kinda cool, I loved the cover with the rose, but the clincher was that I thought this cat was on the level as he uses two "n's" in Moodymann. I thought exactly the same thing Robin, although I was a bit wary abt going up against the wisdom of May and Atkins - that's not meant ironically at all. I respect them and their opinions 100%, although I might disagree. That point is a difficult one. A bit of a dilemma: On the one hand part of the attraction of the music we're into *is* it's very 'imperfection' on any number of fronts, on sound quality; structurally; production. Imperfections whether intentional or unintentional can add almost a magical quality to a piece of music *heard in the right context*. The same could especially be said (imho) about Derrick May's own work - I mean basically, during the era in which he did his only non-collaborative work (no offence intended in that, it's just a fact that it was a while ago) electronic music sounded what could be called 'unfinished' or put more politely, 'minimal'. And then there is Robin's point about the sketchiness of some productions being quite necessary if the music is going to be programmed with other tracks ... However, I can definitely see the point about some things being quite patently thrown together (or seeming to be) and that point where minimal becomes just downright lazy, unimaginative, or dare I say it - a display of a *lack* of talent rather than display of talent. It would be helpful though to know what tracks May had in mind when he made that statement (but of course we never will), 'cause in the last 6 months I've heard a great deal of quality music coming from Detroit and coming from everywhere. I've heard some mediocre house, techno, broken beat, etc etc too, but not as much good stuff - which you do have to seek out if you want to overwhelm what would seem like a stream (but not a deluge) of cack - that being a crucial point! Nothing different in that today compared to ten years ago. (mho.) k

It's kinda sloppy in a couple of parts. Hopefully you don't think any of my mess is too disastrous. I've never actually tried to mix an entire set of broken beat stuff before. ha... no worries! Such is the life of someone who chooses to mix this mad style! it's a cross to bear i hear ya ;) i feel like some of it does work well for a fast cut-n-paste fashion, while others (esp. the stringy ones) you can really ride and wring them out over some acapella beats. But to always take the safe transitions, intros and outtros is just too boring. I have yet to hear a super-locked-down-tight mix of something with this much differing percussion signatures and polyrhythmic breaks and disjointed action going on... and in the cases where I know the tracks being played, I can often hear even the most experienced DJs taking a mixture of risks and 'safely mixes' (ha) the ambient or beatless break areas as places to 'take' to the next new track, Orrin Walters included. And there is a time for both. I'd say such is the way of the style, I mean it's BROKE-N ! anyone who says they can lock a set super tight of this style isn't playing the craziest stuff in the genre... which to me is the most interesting. Not the noodley, faux-jazz wonky stuff, (which i am fading fast on) but the real experimental 'technosoul' side of it, like mustang, titonton, domu, aardvarck(!difficult!), rednose, genre, numbian mindz, seiji, nu era, son of scientist, moonstar, total science, etc. hats off for not pre-planning every mix out for the whole thing... that is so BORING. personally i can never do the same mix more than once or twice max, life (behind 1200's) is too short and there's too much fun in riding the randomness of it all, flipping it over and trying out that b-side you never really gave proper attention to, experimentation, etc. BTW - Brian Gillespie has pulled off some pretty heroic broken beat flavored DJ sets in detroit but he'll also tell ya the sh!t ain't easy and frankly i think it is (and should be) mixed with other genres to really stand out and create impact.. I love to hear it with similar 'feeling' 4/4 stuff too, UR especially comes to mind, Ibex, Recloose, As One, Urban Tribe, even Plaid.. (not exactly 4/4 but you know what i mean). DJ Aaron Shin is also great at mixing broken beat style, he lived in Chicago but has also relocated to New York, and he was into DJing this style (+ house) from day ONE.. he taught me a lot and turned me on to sounds I never heard before. He goes more vocal than I can personally, but if he is DJ'ing out and about in NYC do catch him. Very diverse and he always has the latest cuts, he's on the hunt for the new white lables like Ted Nugent on opening day of bowhunting season. :P peace, Matt MacQueen

I think anyone familiar with his work will agree the answer is 'a', and Carl Craig is not, if fact, the subliminal seducer. ;) Or maybe they both are in different ways? You could level the same criticism against The Black Dog's 'Music For Adverts and Short Films', which is one of the best albums of any sort of music in my opinion. It's less about each track than the mood changes. Or... the whole thing works and is successful precisely because it leaves you wanting so much more of the same. As dance music afficianados, I think it's particularly hard to acclimate to this style, although I MUCH prefer it to crap DJ's letting records play for 10+ minutes at a time before moving on. I mean, that creates zero vibe. No one does, or should play successive 10+ minute tracks. That's just stupid. It doesn't work. CiM's style is a refreshing change from repitition-habituation. You have to do disc at once burning and set your gaps to 0 sec.. Except for the gap in the first track before it all starts.. That has to be 2 sec. i saw recloose play. he sucked. can't keep a mix on beat for more than 5 or 6 bars if his life depended on it. played some gay house and turned it up a notch with some better stuff for the last 20 min of his set but by then it wasnt enough to save a lackluster dj set. played a lot of electro/breaks inspired house and gospel sampling house records. maybe if i would've gotten there early it could've been better but i got there at 3 as recloose was going on and wasn't too into the party, which was vibeless at best. i saw the poster at the knitting factory for matthew herbert. looks like fun. on 8/14/01 11:41 AM, Greg Earle at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Marginal 313 content, but the above lineup is at the Knitting Factory in > Hollywood on Saturday, September 8th ... > > (Anyone go to see Recloose DJ here last Saturday? maybe the rolling bassline and jamican dudes say bum clat every now and then but 2 step as a pattern and or beat is basically garage (quantized in triplets) without a four four bass kick. therers so much you could do with 2 step not just that speed garage sound. but the problem is that i caNT FIND QUALITY 2 STEP.
