2004-10-21 Thread Katrin Richter
Hey Alex and everyone,

I will report duely!!! I was there the last two years, it was one of the
most mindblowing experiences in my life which made me a true follower of the
Oirish scene! I love them. And their harwses!

Check www.deafireland.com

I posted this a while ago - and no one reacted on it, serious!!! I thought
there was some politics, and I am glad to hear it's not. So everyone must
have been sound asleep on that particular date!

Peace

Hey 313, wazzup...?

Mark, where did you get the "city in the clouds" quote from? Would be
interesting to know as "city in the clouds" could be a poetic translation
for the German word "Wolkenkuckucksheim" - "clouds cuckoo's home": Someone
living there is something like a loopy lunatic. Wondr if this is what Oswald
tried to insinuate?

However, trying to find a quote of Oswald stating that, I stumbled across
this article about Berlin in 1998 which might be a good read furthering
Berlin as being a creative antipode to Detroit.

http://homestudio.thing.net/revue/content/eshun.htm (english) - it's about
Basic Channel, Chain Reaction and Porter Ricks.

And this page is about Berlin, Manchester and Detroit -
http://www.circonium.de/index.html (english) - creative hubs that clearly
influence each other, no city, idea or person is isolated! It's all
intertwined!

PS my vote's for whatever special "city in the clouds" that Moritz

AW: (313) Kenny Larkin/Dark Comedy album

2004-09-17 Thread Katrin Richter
New Kenny Larkin album! For your interest... the official press release!

DARK COMEDY-MUSIC SAVES MY SOUL

SELF-OBSESSION, it's the 21st century epidemic. M-m-my generation has become
the me-me-me generation and reality has become a TV show which turns our
next door neighbours into stars that flicker and die in the blink of an eye.
It's Warhol's fifteen minutes reductio ad absurdum, Alice navel-gazing
through the looking glass. And while our cathode ray icons relentlessly
chant "mirror, mirror on the wall ..." the myth of Narcissus - condemned to
waste away adoring his own image - seems entirely apposite.

Earlier this year was perfect timing then for Detroit techno legend Kenny
Larkin to deliver his long-awaited new album. After all, it's was roughly
seven years since his last release. The Narcissist - 11 carefully considered
electronic gems guaranteed to provide an antidote to the superficial whirl.
>From the swooning synthetics of Fake French to the seductive, undulating
groove of In The Meantime, it reflects both where he's been and where he's
coming from now.

Larkin returns with his second release for 2004, under his alter self, Dark
Comedy with, quite arguably, his most impressive, and important release to
date.

Titled, Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul, Larkin wastes no time in
establishing himself as one of Detroit's most intriguing and multi-faceted
talents. Exploring the full range of his musical persona, Larkin pushes
himself to tap into a soulful side of him that although present in his
earlier releases, finds itself deeply entrenched in, and modeled after
African American music from years' past. He unapologetically leaves no
ambiguity about his intentions. Which, is to remind others how and why soul
music, in it's many shapes, sizes, and guises, undeniably taps the most
primal emotional and moral attributes that makes a human, a human being.

This is electronic black music in it's rawest, purest form. Stripped of
slick, modern day production techniques, polished vocals, and mechanically
quantized melodies, Larkin instead focuses on funky, laid back organ solo's,
James Brown-esque horn stabs, bluesy guitar riffs reminiscent of John Lee
Hooker, and Larkin's self narrative, comical, blues-style vocals. Larkin
thrusts himself into a genre not yet discovered by his electronic
contemporaries from Detroit, or quite arguably anyone for that matter, by
mixing blues, funk, jazz, house, and a pinch of techno.

Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul 's aim is not to be dissected, and
analyzed, it's purpose is to be felt. Larkin's unique interpretation of the
many black genres of music, that inspired him as a child, leaves the
listener with only one option...tap your feet, and move your ass. Witness
why African American music, in any form, continues to influence almost every
genre of music today.

Dark Comedy- Funk Faker: Music Saves My Soul will be released on Poussez in
November.

(313) DEAF in October - anyone going?!

2004-09-10 Thread Katrin Richter
Hey 313 list!
I dunno if anyone here (except Eamonn :)) went to the previous two issues of
Dublin Electronic Arts Festival, but it's highly recommended for anyone in
Europe to attend this event as it's really worth it. I went both times and
was amazed. I checked Ryanair, and people from all over Europe can afford
swing their Detroit loving booties to Brussels and catch a flight for as
little as one cent if they book today (flying out on Oct 20 and returning
Oct 26). Maybe we could even organise sharing a car to get to Charleroi. And
we should definitely get together for a drink if anyone of you guys heads
there.
This year's edition will see Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter, Robert Hood, DJ
Bone, Riley Reinhold, Ron's Mobile Disco, The Horrorist, The Producer, Manu
le Malin, Simon Conwy, Invisible Agent, David Donahoe, Visitor aka Mark
Broom & Dave Hill, Fatima Yamaha aka Comtron/Seymore Bits, Ivar Tonso,
Donnacha Costello, Rob Rowland, Five Green Circle, Americhord, ACU, Ikeaboy,
Chymera, Paradox, Naphta and many many more. Robert Moog's film will be
shown, and there will be panels and open lap top conventions etc. Plus
Dublin is a great place to go and I am looking well forward to harrrveh a
pinth of guinessh with myh harrrwses! Check www.deafireland.com.
So who is there and up for it?!

Missionar,
beseelter DJ, Ausnahmeproduzent und man with a vision in einem, fällt es
schwer, passende Vergleiche für ihn zu finden. In Chicago aufgewachsen,
Was soll man noch groß sagen?
Das hier ist der ganz heiße Scheiß.

towards music in cubicles. as a result, i spend most of my 8hrs. with great
house and techno pumpin' out of my little PC speakers. naturally, this
being suburban america, i am the only commuter listening to the music of

i get my fair share of raised eyebrows and cheeky comments from

AW: (313) no (ellen) alliens in nyc

2004-05-18 Thread Katrin Richter
Hey Resistance,

all Ellen did was trying to enter through Canada. I phoned Bpitch to ask for
the details. If she would have tried to enter from Germany, apparantly, her
visa would be okay. Does anyone know why the US is so restrictive with
people coming from just across the boarder Shema to see that the bookers
cannot react to the quick changes of law and order and custums. It's totally
random and no one knows what's going on.

Peace
Kat

AW: (313) Workout Tracks

2004-05-17 Thread Katrin Richter
I don't work out. I go in clubs and dance. Which makes me get drenched in
sweat. I tried to go to a gym but it bored me to death.
Even with a music playing device I could not entrance myself to the degree I
didn't know how I got there. So I started doing sports outdoors. With real
people.

I was at the gig Martin was at and he was quite disappointing - He played a
'party' section as if he was a at a student's union. He played Out Of Space,
which was welcome last year at Sonar, but when he drops it in set after set,
the novelty wears off a bit. He played an inexusable half hour of execrable
nuskoolbreaks. He also played some excellent stuff but he certainly seemed
a shadow of his former self - every set was full of surprises in the old
days and he did seemed to be treading water on this occasion - last year's
Sonar set was one of my favourite clubbing experiences ever, so I am not
'hating' him, just demonstrating why Martin made those comments about him

After all the hooting and hollering, I think a couple of things need
to be said:

1. Laurent is one of the O.G. Technotourists, who started coming to Detroit
to hang out and play years and years ago. He is every bit the fan as you or
I. He LOVES Detroit -- the music and the city and the people.

2. While he's not the only producer in France, or the first, he is one of
France's true pioneers in Dance music, and is a hero to French kids. France
is in its own way as insular and conservative as the US, and Laurent
introduced
and championed US house and techno to an audience that isn't always
receptive
to new music from elsewhere. His infectious enthusiasm for the music, and
his skills in reading and motivating a crowd, allows him to lead and educate
an audience.

If you don't like him, or were underwhelmed when you saw him, that's fine..
It's horses for courses. I only like some of what he's done as a producer.
But I will always have huge respect for what he's accomplished

To get the idea of the concept, maybe. But to get the idea of the
artistic experience? Absurd.

THIS is the sort of reductio ad absurdum situation that purely
conceptual "art" can lead to. If the entire weight of the art can be
summarized in the writings about the art, then where's the art?

If the real meat of your work is in your program
notes/explanations/justifications, then why call yourself a
composer/painter/sculptor?

That particular breed of artist is worth absolutely nothing to me.

AW: (313) Future

2004-04-21 Thread Katrin Richter
I think space has become a dated concept as people realise that not even the
present is really enjoyable. Wars, poverty, debts, pollution... Why being
exited about the future? It might suck even more...

Maybe it's time for some Post-Futurism. Or maybe not... this is what I found
about Futurism as an art form:

Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. It was
(and is) a refreshing contrast to the weepy sentimentalism of Romanticism.
The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities; they
embraced the exciting new world that was then upon them rather than
hypocritically enjoying the modern world's comforts while loudly denouncing
the forces that made them possible. Fearing and attacking technology has
become almost second nature to many people today; the Futurist manifestos
show us an alternative philosophy. Too bad they were all Fascists.
http://www.unknown.nu/futurism/
Manifesto of Futurism
1. We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and
fearlessness.
2. Courage, audacity, and revolt will be essential elements of our poetry.
3. Up to now literature has exalted a pensive immobility, ecstasy, and
sleep. We intend to exalt aggresive action, a feverish insomnia, the racer's
stride, the mortal leap, the punch and the slap.
4. We affirm that the world's magnificence has been enriched by a new
beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing car whose hood is adorned with great
pipes, like serpents of explosive breath-a roaring car that seems to ride on
grapeshot is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.
5. We want to hymn the man at the wheel, who hurls the lance of his spirit
across the Earth, along the circle of its orbit.
6. The poet must spend himself with ardor, splendor, and generosity, to
swell the enthusiastic fervor of the primordial elements.
7. Except in struggle, there is no more beauty. No work without an
aggressive character can be a masterpiece. Poetry must be conceived as a
violent attack on unknown forces, to reduce and prostrate them before man.
8. We stand on the last promontory of the centuries!... Why should we look
back, when what we want is to break down the mysterious doors of the
Impossible? Time and Space died yesterday. We already live in the absolute,
because we have created eternal, omnipresent speed.
9. We will glorify war-the world's only hygiene-militarism, patriotism, the
destructive gesture of freedom-bringers, beautiful ideas worth dying for,
and scorn for woman.
10. We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will
fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice.
11. We will sing of great crowds excited by work, by pleasure, and by riot;
we will sing of the multicolored, polyphonic tides of revolution in the
modern capitals; we will sing of the vibrant nightly fervor of arsenals and
shipyards blazing with violent electric moons; greedy railway stations that
devour smoke-plumed serpents; factories hung on clouds by the crooked lines
of their smoke; bridges that stride the rivers like giant gymnasts, flashing
in the sun with a glitter of knives; adventurous steamers that sniff the
horizon; deep-chested locomotives whose wheels paw the tracks like the
hooves of enormous steel horses bridled by tubing; and the sleek flight of
planes whose propellers chatter in the wind like banners and seem to cheer
like an enthusiastic crowd.

whatever happened to the future?
did it become an outdated concept?

as I sat watching Matthew Herbert and his bag of crisps band last night, I
realised I was watching a 50 year old (at least) show.

then, I thought, all the bands I've seen lately have harked to the past,
really heavily. All the records I buy are obsessed with the past, or are
old.

even techno isn't futuristic any more. Jeff Mills scores films from the
'20's, Red Planet titles are all about native american indian issues,
instead of "sex in zero gravity" or "journey to the martian polar
cap".. There's no "time, space, transmat" business anymore. I mean,
even the word "transmat" was made up wasn't it? No one does that any more,
there's no dreamers left, just flippin' historians.

so why? is it too scary to contemplate any more?

AW: (313) Loveparade 2004?

2004-04-16 Thread Katrin Richter
Make sure you check out SOMA and NOMAD in Cologne; this year's Soma is with
The KLF!

S.O.M.A.-Festival 2004
Jugendpark Köln

06. bis 08. August 2004

c/o pop Auftaktwochenende

Das Trüffelschwein unter den Festivals: Gentleman, DJ Koze, Brothers
Keepers, Seeed, 2raumwohnung oder die Saian Supah Crew hatte das
S.O.M.A.-Festival schon vor ihrer Zeit im Line-Up. Vom 6. bis 8. August 2004

c/o pop in Köln.

Popmusik.

Detroit Public Schools officials announced Thursday the district would
lay
off 3,200 school employees, including 900 teachers, by July 1. The job
cuts,
which amount to 13 percent of the workforce, are in response to a budget
shortfall of $78 million last year and a projected deficit of $91
million in
2005, officials say.
The cuts in the $1.5 billion budget follow an announcement last month
that
an additional 450 administrators could lose their jobs. The district,
which
already faces chronic overcrowding in the classrooms, also plans to
shut at
least three schools, in addition to the 16 closed or consolidated last
year.
The budget for supplies and purchased services will be cut by more than
one-third to save $50 million, with funding for playground improvements
slashed from $1 million to $250,000.
The layoffs will wreak havoc, particularly for teachers who are already
short-handed and stretched to the limit. "You could see a gym teacher
who is
certified in kindergarten through six grade become a homeroom teacher,
or an
instrumental teacher might have to go back to the classroom," district
spokesman Mario Morrow said.
Kenneth Burnley, CEO of the Detroit Public Schools, said he also plans
to
renegotiate the district's contract with the Detroit Federation of
Teachers
in order reduce or eliminate 3-4 percent annual raises that teachers are
due.
The 151,000-student school district-the largest in the state-has been
hit
hard by federal and state budget cuts, the ongoing loss of manufacturing
jobs and tax revenue in Michigan, rising fuel costs and a decline in
enrollment. Over the last eight years nearly 30,000 students have
transferred to charter, private and suburban schools. Ninety percent of
the
remaining students are African-American, with more than 7 out of 10
students
coming from families living below the official poverty level.
Facing a $1 billion state deficit, Michigan's Democratic governor
Jennifer
Granholm and the state legislature are cutting per-pupil grants for K-12
education by $55 per student and revising the formula for counting
pupils in
schools, in order to slash another $43 million from state spending for
schools. In the proposed state budget, Detroit could also lose another
$15
million it has been receiving since the state took over the district in
1999. On Wednesday the state senate also rejected a plan that would have
given extra money to districts with declining enrollments.
Because of stagnating or falling revenue school districts throughout
Michigan are facing budget cuts and layoffs. According to Tom White,
executive director of the Michigan School Business officials, 90
percent of
state districts are planning to lay off staff or not fill open
positions.
"It's like getting squeezed by a python," he said, the "pressure just is
increasing as time goes by. It is going to get ugly and I don't hear a
great
deal of concern being raised in [the state capital] Lansing."
Like other districts nationwide, Detroit schools are also threatened by
the
provisions of the Bush administration's 2001 federal education plan, the
so-called No Child Left Behind Act, which removes federal funds if
districts
fail to achieve specific academic goals. One quarter of the district's

"It's like getting squeezed by a python," he said, the "pressure just is
increasing as time goes by. It is going to get ugly and I don't hear a great

Like other districts nationwide, Detroit schools are also threatened by the
provisions of the Bush administration's 2001 federal education plan, the
so-called No Child Left Behind Act, which removes federal funds if districts
fail to achieve specific academic goals. One quarter of the district's
schools have already been warned they must overhaul their operations because
of "chronic failure." The school district received a federal reading grant
of nearly $6.5 million in August but continued funding hinges on
1st-through-8th and 10th-graders passing tests at the end of the school
year. The budget cutbacks announced Thursday all but ensure future failures,
guaranteeing even more devastating budget cuts.
"We don't need any more cuts," said Mary, a longtime Detroit school bus
driver. "What is going to happen to the kids with special needs, the
disabled and impaired students? We heard they plan to take away the bus
attendants that help us in the busses with handicapped students. This is
outrageous.
"The conditions are already unbearable in the schools. Buildings are falling
apart, there is no toilet paper or soap in the bathrooms, the classrooms are
overcrowded and the teachers are spending money out of their own pockets for
supplies. These budget cuts are taking the future away from our kids. With
the casinos downtown making millions and CEOs are raking it in how can they
say there is no money for schools?
"You know the economy is way down when you start taking away from schools
that are already hurting. How can you talk about 'No Child Left Behind' when
you are laying off teachers?"

(313) new theo parrish/rotating assembly album

2004-03-23 Thread Katrin Richter
I have no idea if this has been posted before, but I just found this on the
www.grooveattack.de website

17/Mar/2004
Theo Parrish

Sound Signature hardly needs introduction. Started out in 1996 by Theo
Parrish, it has always been an outlet for his own music as well as for his
friends, like Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Pittman & Moodymann (3 Chairs). After
the release of "Parallel Dimensions" a few years ago as well as a label
compilation, the forthcoming album Theo Parrish pres. Rotating Assembly
"Natural Aspirations" is the 3rd full length on the label.

Rotating Assembly is a new band put together by Theo Parrish. This loose
Detroit outfit evolves around 21 people, who exchange talents and energy.
All tracks are written and produced and masterminded by Theo Parrish, who
has given them his (sound) signature sound - a true Sound Signature release.

Artists included in the band are: Genevieve (known for vocals with
Recloose), Maat Lo (aka Billy Lo), Marcellus Pittman, Rick Wilhite (3
Chairs), Warren Harris (recorded with Dan Curtin), Andres. Also newcomers
such as Karen Bosco (most vocals) John Dougalas (trumpet), King Sunshine &
Trent Mitchell (double bass) put in incredible effort to make this release a
top Sound Signature title.

>From the laidback vocal tune "Naturally" to the instrumental emotions of
"Melt" it's all there to make this album an allround one. From strength to
strength, Theo Parrish takes it to the next level, once again.

The CD album will be accompanied by a limited 3x12" pack with full artwork
sleeves. The first 12" comes with an exclusive instrumental mix of "Melt".

AW: (313) Techno's Voice

2004-03-10 Thread Katrin Richter
Weird, it's always on the radio here (which is probably why I so strongly
dislike it - they never leave you alone to let you discover music, it's just
pushed onto you whether you're in the mood for some Babybabybaby business or
not) and it has this breakdown after the second chorus because then she
decides to take affirmative action and phone the guy (something a girl
wouldn't do, normally, but hey, it's kinda crazehhh)

Blurb! This so gets me ranting.

Damn! I've just been hearing the radio version, it must be edited! I just
hear it kick stright into the first verse, man it's an amazing song. I just
love that down-scale, the hook, her voice, and the weird twinkly pianos used

Total video tangent there anyway, sorry!

I would love to see some Drexciyan dance party video scene, but I don't know
if any video could really manage to capture the party that goes on in my
head

Has anyone seen the cover art work of the detroit Grand Pubahs new album on
Poker Flat? It's called "Galactic Ass Creatures from Uranus" and had
two-legged ladies bottoms that look a bit like retun of the Tripods and
shoot lasers out of their eyed sexual organs perched between the legs... the
grafix remind me very badly of "Fred Come To Bed" and ", these totallly
senseless Eurotrash Dance videos from the early Nineties - dunno if anyone
saw those, but they were bd! Good enbough reason to get rid of the telly
(UK slang, sorry)...

Oh no, is that the video!? Man, I hate it when videos try and be a movie!
And yes, that sequence is cheesy as hell! I haven't seen or heard it but it
really annoys me when artists try to make the video more than it is AND
FAIL! (Thriller is the classic example of the approach working.) Hip-hop/R&B
videos are a massive culprit, I remember that Fugees vid for 'Ready or Not'
when they're in helicopters, and flying around an sh*t! A cool thing about
techno is that it never went down that path, although a truly visual
representation of techno is probably waiting to happen - I always pictured
the coolest scenes from Drexciya making it into videos, kind of a window
into that world, an underwater dance party... and I guess it's people like
Jeff who are leading the charge with his DVD.

So anyway, back to the discussion - does anyone think there is common ground
in the feelings evoked by what I call 'soul' music and techno? There are
obviously excellent examples of this in techno (the Relics EP by Abacus
immediately springs to mind). Without degenrating into the old soul vs.
machine 'debate', is there more to the fact that these separate styles
exist, in that they express different emotions or feelings? A lot of techno
is basically saying 'Come the f*ck on!', and all the better for it. Is it
merely the distinction between lyric-laden music and 'tracks'?

I guess what's on my mind is - what the f*ck is techno music SAYING??

"Let yourself go!" it says to me (sometimes). Sometimes it whispers "why so
much melancholy?" when being confronted with the mere beauty of a bassline
or string laden arrangements... "Remember these moments when not much more
mattered than a pounding beat"...

But most of the times it's not saying anything... nothing like
"By-be bayy-be bay-bee - it's getting kinda
crayyzee" - never heard that one before... I don't like pap. I don't
like gossip. I don't like stuff like this (spoken with this kinda cutesy
kinda stupid television voice):

Well I'm a have to just gon head and call this boy.
Hello?
Can I speak to...to Michael? Oh, hey how you doin'? > So how did she get
his phone no. if she doesn't even know his name
Uh, I feel kinna silly doin this but, uh,
this is the waitress from the coffee house on 39th from
   > so she is a waitress then, huh?
You know the one with the braids?
Yeah. Well I see you on Wednesdays all the time.
You come in every Wednesday on your lunch break, I think.
And you always order the special...with the hot chocolate.
My manager be trippin and stuff talkin 'bout we gotta use water, but...
I always use some milk and cream for you, cause...
I think you kinna sweet. (laughs)
Anyway, you always got on some fly blue suit
and your cufflinks is shining all bright.
So what you do?
Oh word?
Yeah that's interestin'...
Look man, I mean, I don't wanna waste your time but...
I know girls don't usually do this, > OUCH!
Who says this??
but I was wonderin' if maybe we could get together
outside the restaurant one day?
You know 'cause I do look a lot different outside my work clothes and...
I mean we could just go across the street to the park, right here...
Wait, hold up, my... my cell phone's breakin' up, hold up...
Can you hear me now?
Yeah. So what day did you say?
Oh yeah. Thursday's perfect, man.

I guess I am just thinking too much about meaning to accept this as
something valid.

YOU DON'T KNOW MY NAME IS THE BEST SONG I'VE HEARD IN AGES!

My god what a heartbreaker! Techno has a hard time inspiring the same
emotions, generally speaking of course...there's such _ambition_ in a song
like 'You Don't Know My Name', it's soaring, beautiful, and melancholy.

Well every time I mention a hip-hop/R&B CD here Carl Craig ends up charting
it or playing it, so... ;) I think that 'chipmunk' thing came from RZA
distorting samples, I like it, but there's none of that on West productions
like You Don't Know My Name by A Keys (a Theo Parrish fave incidentally) or
Encore by Jay-Z, etc. The album is superb.

(313) Blacktronica

2004-02-09 Thread Katrin Richter
Taken from: http://www.absorb.org/articles/blacktronica/index.html

from coltrane to carl craig because there is more to black music
than hip-hop and r'n'b

"blacktronica is not a club, it's a movement," asserts charlie dark, retired
b-boy, former member of attica blues, nowadays gone solo producer and
remixer - and, one of the leading forces behind the london-based,
genre-bending blacktronica movement.
he continues: "this movement is born out of frustration, really." bitterly
he recounts his own major label experience with attica blues: "a lot of
black musicians in the uk are constrained by the music industry to make
music only made to sound like what is popular in america: hip-hop, r'n'b,
and so on. carbon-copied music."
mass appeal black music truly has been in a way hijacked in the 21st
century. you turn on the tv: what do you see? mtv clowns, corporate culture,
brainwashed propaganda. musicians that claim to speak for all of us but
actually only blabber for themselves, on how much money or how big dicks
they say they have. we need other places to turn to find innovation.
blacktronica provides an oasis. "from coltrane to carl craig because there
is more to black music than hip-hop and r'n'b," as it says on the flyer,
this is a place for us to listen rather than stand amazed by gold chains and
sports cars.
so, around two years ago, he and other people around the world, caught in
pockets of non-compromise and dissent toward the major label hegemony,
decided pursuing a whole new thing. blacktronica has been running for a year
and a half, with a bi-monthly workshop and club at the london's ica, a
compilation album in the making, and an impressive fanzine in the
back-catalogue.
charlie dark describes the movement very much as a groundwork for creating a
forum to teach people where the music comes from, the roots. there are plans
for visiting community centres and doing workshops. "electronic music is
often created through isolation, through grassroots culture, but there are
lots of other factors behind the music, societal forces. the idea with
blacktronica is to inspire and teach people to innovate."
not dismissing the amazing productions in the american hip-hop mainstream,
such as neptunes and others, charlie dark focuses his criticism at the
british music industry. there are too few people interested in music left
within the british music industry, he points out. in america, there still
are people understanding the music, not the money, left in the industry. and
there are specialised major label subdivisions. in the uk, the music is
forced to go underground. a lot of things are happening at the moment: uk
garage is going darkside again, with sparse 8 bar music, new technological
gadgets, mp3 mixtapes spread through fibre-optics.

black secret technology

technology that gives us new possibilities to intercept the industry. at the
same time, things are still hard if you're left struggling on your own.
"london is like a sponge that sucks up culture from around the world and
regurgitates it in its own way, but at the same time it's really slow,
because of the lack of infrastructure. that's why we have to create our own
infrastructure," he concludes.
so blacktronica was born, to ignite innovation and divulge what's happening
in the global electronic underground. down here you're inclined to hear
anything, as long as it's (somewhat) black. ragga-fuelled technological
beats next to 30th century hip-hop next to rubber dang disco. with monster
tracks such as cousin cockroachs' seminal 'this ain't tom & jerry', seiji's
anthem 'loose lips', and the offerings of former attica blues man tony
nwachukwu on the genre boundary-pushing 'won / too' ep and his recent
release as the wach, blacktronica is truly holding the fort when it comes to
musical originality.
"the way different types of music are perceived makes a lot of difference to
what gets recognised," charlie dark explains. young people today can't
connect to techno, because it's something from the past, and very much
because of the media definition of it; a field full of kids with raver masks
on and a beat 100 miles an hour dancing crazy. "but then you play them carl
craig," dark continues, "and something is changed." connotations of music
are rarely corresponding to the real thing. in a similar way, black dance
music might be perceived by outside onlookers, even readers of this webzine,
as one-dimensional, in certain ways less innovative as the musical auteurs
of "intelligent dance music", which of course is complete bollocks.
blacktronica is here to help change all this.

I think that would be a bit drastic! The 313 list isn't
*all* vitriol and player-hating after all... :)

It's a funny thing about the internet that it seems to
bring out some serious bitterness and bile in a lot of
people, and that applies to forums and mailing lists
everywhere, not just 313. In fact 313 is nothing like as
bad as some other forums/lists I can think of, where
anyone who opens their mouth is instantly subjected to
a barrage of personal abuse.

Totally disagree with JT on this. Dear's Leave Luck to Heaven LP (Spectral)
is fantastic stuff.

Upon listening to it, I find it to sound very orchestrated. It seems like
every little sound on that record is carefully thought out. The voices in
those tracks are amazing too, they work really well with his very abstract
beats. much love to that album. I will stand up for it. My needle hits the
paper everytime this wax is at bat.

While on the subject of spectral sounds, dont overlook Isolee's rmx of
Daylight on that label. fasten seatbelt before listening.

2004-02-03 Thread Katrin Richter
I think the oringinal people from Detroit put a different kind of soul into
their music, it's not about "some new depression" and not about crying. It's
about enjoying life and the celebration of that joy.

It's just a different soul they put into their music, neither of the souls
is worth more or less

I can feel that pure enjoyment and hope is a feeling in Techno that has
passed a long time ago. Nothing has changed, Detroit is still depressing,
America is depressing for many a black man, and I can feel that a lot of
hearts sunk over the developments in the last year.

does it have any SOUL, you ask??? have you listened to his music, or just
tracked through it because it was a detroit artist, and since it didnt
sound like "no UFOs" or "strings of life" or "jaguar" you decided it was
not worthy of being catagorized as a detroit record?

god, do i get tired of this generalization. why, OH WHY does everything
have to sound like a modern day submerge record to be labeled "detroit
techno" anymore? dont people realize that most of the records that defined
(notice the past tense, that most cant seem to let go of) detroit techno,
were produced 12-21 years ago, and there shouldve been TONS of
evolution in that time period?

perfect example: shake. shakes been around from the get go, but has
continuously evolved. shakes records sound like shake records. not because
of similar sounds used, but because he has a specific style.. a certain
brand of soul. are you going to tell me that the only reason shakes music
has soul, is because hes black and from detroit??? in my opinion, those 2
factors are secondary factors. shakes music has soul, because shake has
soul.

the fact that matthew is white has nothing to do with the soul of his
music. if you think that, then you better be thinking the same about joy
division, liquid liquid, francois k, or recloose, even.

everything matthew has produced has come straight from his soul. alot of
it is downright moving too. listen to "some new depression" from the
ghostly 'Idol Tryouts' comp. first time i heard that track in its
entirety, it nearly brought me to tears... the same way derrick mays
"icon" does to me.

i hope that one day people will understand these points better.

derek.

I'm going to risk a major firestorm by venturing that when Derrick said

> "... because I think this may be the last chance that we may be able
> to do
> it through Techno music. I don't know if there's going to be a next
> generation of young musicians coming through to follow up in our

he really meant "I don't know if there's going to be a next generation
of
young BLACK Detroit musicians coming through to follow up in our
footsteps."

I've had discussions on several disparate occasions with Black Detroit
artists (Rob Hood, Kenny Larkin, Bone, etc.) and they all bemoaned to me
the fact that there seemed to be no young Black cats coming up through
the ranks - that all the young brothers were just interested in Hip-Hop
now,
and didn't care about Techno. They all understood why things were the
way they were, but it made them sad nevertheless.

Obviously I don't live in Detroit so I don't know all the current
players
on the scene, but off the top of my head I couldn't think of anyone
younger than, say, Sean Deason (chime in Sean!) or Kenny Dixon Jr. (or
our own Jwan, if we stretch Detroit over to Pittsburgh :-) ).

(One thing that triggered my thinking of this line of reasoning was
listening
to Kenny's old Dark Comedy track "Without A Sound (Silent Mix)" from
"Corbomite
Maneuver". [EMAIL PROTECTED] what a sublime track. It's going on my Wedding
music list.)

Yeah, it's especially strange to see this when you know that they haven't
paid their artists who are still waiting for their acetates... Stuff like

When I went to Sonar this Summer, the Integrale guys were still as hyper and
-ed up as one would expect from some wanker grand players from the UK.

No-one ever mentioned it but they went down shortly after that.

I guess as an artist, you're trying to keep it quiet as long as possible not
to scare potential clients off as Karl probably still waits for his money or
vinyl - like many others... I know that all the Pure Platic guys were really
affected.

This is a great post. and maybe someone should send him some stuff. I

here's a weird one though. Alot of stuff I've heard that will be out in

Hey, seems like you've made some really bad experiences with women. I am

male counterparts are pretty dumb too.

The problem is that "intrinsically knowledgable chicks" are occasionally
conniving each other's downfall. It's nice - and powerful - to be the only
woman in a male dominated arena and so when Ms Thing sees another girl, she
is gon' stop at nothing to mark out her territory, humilate you in front of
male colleagues, and just be as un-co-operative as she can.
I'd prefer the odd light sexist comment (which is rare) from a male to
another woman's brutal machinations. I call it B***h on B***h crime what
women do to each other.

AW: (313) german to english translation please?

2004-01-20 Thread Katrin Richter
D5 means Dimension 5, as it did in the past on previous releases on Delsin
records, and now he returns with a new EP for the English imprint. Starting
"Controlled Forces" with a deep, grooving track full of tension created by
lush and harmonic pads, sitting on a simple groove and swooshing freestyle
noises that sound like a string banged on metal. In addition, there is a
synthesizer solo that's really bursting with life
Anyway, my native English speakers, I have to leave the office now, so I
couldn't finish the translation, but the overall cconcensus is: it's an
excellent piece of vinyl...

Hi,

Kind of after some help here. If anyone could be so kind.

What do you look for in a website from a techno label?

are there any particular techno labels that have a really good site do you
think?

What makes it really good - any particular features?

Thanks

Alex

(313) Jeff "Milestone" Mills

2004-01-15 Thread Katrin Richter
When I met Jeff, he was a very nice caring person who was deeply concerned
about the direction Techno was taking in Germany (!). He felt that he and
Dimitri Hegemann from Tresor did a bad job back in the early Nineties
because he pleaded guilty for conditioning people to consume Techno in dark
boxes full of fog and strobes and didn't consider making it nicer for girls
(which is, in his opinion, the reason why there are not so many girls
embracing Techno)...

We had a really long discussion and he admitted that he sometimes feels
really removed from his audience. He said he'd never consume drugs because
he would hate to put his company - and the people working for him - at
risk...

I don't think he is greedy... I think he is striving to be a real "artist",
sound- and concept-wise, that is accepted by "educated" people. This is, in
my opinion, the reason, why he tries to employ these pseudo-intellectual,
pseudo-philosophical thoughts on his sleeves written in bad English (which
of course, are more expensive to make). Although he has done Metropolis and
a lot of groundbreaking other projects, he is not really really accepted in
the realms of high art, especially not in North America where a Techno
artist would never reach the status of social acceptance he longs for. In
Europe and Japan, people roll out the red carpet... here, he is the person
who single-handedly established Techno in Berlin (well, at least that's what
Dimi and Jeff both want to believe - themselves - and which is impossible to
prove or disprove).

I guess the things I just mentioned are integral parts of his personality
and that might explain why he tries to make his label a sought-after
commodity rather than being down with the locals. Drug-mongering simple
minds are just not his thang as he was working hard enough to transcend this
stage of low human existance and I think he likes to see himself as a man of
class and style - certainly the way he dresses and the hotels he chooses.

Okay, that was the psychological analysis from da Kat :) who sat on the mat
and is a big fan of Jeff as a human. I wouldn't buy See The Light but I
certainly would buy the flip flips in his shop (and even the Axis beach
towel) if I had the money spare.

I love supporting people...

Uh, yeah - he does all of this. It's called Musik und Machine.
http://www.musikundmaschine.com/index_flash.html

not many other individual artists have done this so I think Jeff is
actually on the forefront of doing exactly what you're asking him to do.

melodic techno

I know someone asked the other day "where is all the
melodic techno now?"

well it just occurred to me that something I recorded this
past week would probably qualify as melodic something,
maybe electro more than techno? I don't know what you all
consider to be the differences between the two.

anyways, please listen and enjoy the following:

www.emmrecords.com/~fux/fuxz__rehashed_melod33z.mp3

alternately, you can surf to
www.emmrecords.com/~fux/web.php and download this audio
plus anything else I'm currenly playing with...

since none of its done, I encourage criticism and comments

thanks,

-Joe

HAHA- Welcome to sydney- Yes Home is a complete joke for sure.

Anyway forget techno clubs as they dont exist here, but i can say Madd
Racket parties are okay for house type music with some detroit flavour
sometimes, still i havent been to one for over a year as i've been in the
UK.

I think Simon's Hindle (list member) pub night on Saturday that Sofie, Simon
and I played at would be one of the only techno gigs in town. This is sort
of monthly though and not a club night.

Other then that you might get the occasional one off parties. Like the ones
My friends and I put on, Deepspace. Or maybe an international every now and
again maybe one every 2 months. These are usually the same names eg.
Herbert,Mills,May,Godfather, Garnier, Mills, May etc, only big 'been here'
before 'sure bet' type things.

Most people wont turn out on mass for local dj's so international nights are
the only alternative. Except for deepspace parties :).

The only reguar weekly techno gig 'technical' which closed last week.

How long are they around for? Check here for events listings, but i think
its pretty shaky at the moment except for big day out and aphex twin.

Sydney is Generally pretty conservative in its music tastes and house music
rules here. There is an underground movement here but its small at the
moment.

A couple of friends are currently in Sydney & are in need of some guidance
(urgently !)

They got guest-listed for Home & said it was like being back at Camden
Palace with Darren Emerson playing cheesy anthems from 95 !

Can anyone recommend any good techno nights going on out there at the mo?

Thanks,
G.

Not counting Movement - anyone considering going to either WMC or Sonar?

I'm trying to find other music festivals that have more than just a stage
and performances

panels, conferences, etc. is what I'm looking for
but also performances too
