Perhaps I'm just using rubbish ones?

I have generic 3M 'orange' ones. Not more expensive fitted or special
purpose plugs.

I might have to branch out :)

Re: (313) Turn the volume down....

2005-11-16 Thread Kev
Good, it's about time.

I've been to too many clubs where I've had to leave because I was
literally in pain from the sound levels (a particularly dynamite Dave
Clarke set was once ruined by this. To be fair I think the staff did keep
turning it down but slowly but surely the volume levels crept back up...)
or after attending my hearing has been severely limited for not far off
the whole of the following week.

Earplugs are always a potential but it can be difficult practically as I
find they have to be put in / taken out very often (for talking to people,
ordering from the bar etc).

The best clubnights I've been to have been where the sound is down
reasonably low (to the point where you don't need to raise your voice much
to carry a conversation) but has exceptional clarity (basically bordering
on having your home system up loud but spread over the area of the dance
floor) as opposed to the systems that are so loud that there is distortion
or complete loss of of mid range frequencies ('do you know what song this
is?' 'no idea, all I'm hearing is a bass thump and hi hats, could be
anything'.

As an aside, I really hope this applys to bars as well. Too often I've
been in a bar at the magical time whereby it goes from being a bar with
music playing in the background at a comfortable level to a bar/mini-club
with music playing at club levels. Which necessitates a hasty exit
otherwise you can't actually talk to the people you're with.

Or maybe I'm just getting old :)

Re: (313) Emotion Electric shutdown

2004-10-15 Thread Kev
Sadly (and from recent personal experience which I don't want to go into)
we're at the point where the large corporations (in this case the major
labels and their 'industry watchdogs' like the RIAA) have enough money to
effectively buy the law.

So yes, in these corporations eyes infringing (note..not stealing) the
copyright of their products is worse than you killing a random joe.

I agree it is completely out of hand but as long as they decide they
don't like it and are funding major political candidates and campaigns
(hello Mr Ashcroft) the law will be bent to their will.

Curiously, I'm not sure if the Emotion Electric peeps saw any
documentation pertaining to the shutdown but my recent experience which
involved US law enforcement offices certainly had at the bottom of key
documentation 'investigations were assisted by various intellectual
property trade associations, includingthe Recording Industry
Association of America."

Which basically means the US judicial system is in bed massivlely with
the media peoples. In a kind of inbred not healthy way.

Head for the hills...

On the topic of Michael Mayer I've really gotten into his Fabric mix
over the past couple of weeks, I've enjoyed it since I first got the cd
when it came out but it has *really* grown on me recently.

Can anyone offer suggestions for any more Michael Mayer mix cd's or
online mixes in a similar style to his Fabric CD?

Thanks,

Re: (313) Assault on Precinct 13

2003-12-17 Thread kev
a few comments to make about Assault On Precinct 13

first- one of my favourite movies- mainly because of that dark dark score-
so raw & simple but so effective.

two- love the remix that came out in the eighties (by john carpenter I
think), but have never managed to pick it up on wax- just my dodgy old 80s
cassette copy so far!

and finally third- I'm fairly confident that this is not 'on-topic', but in
the movie the main actress has possibly one of the finest pair of breasts
ever put to celluloid : ) ..my apologies all, just couldn't resist..

but anyway, if anyone knows where i might get that 80s mix, I'm listening..

Re: (313) Chillage Idiots/Detroit sound

2003-11-11 Thread kev
i think that tying yourself to having to use the classic Detroit instruments
is probably a bad idea, as a big reason for the use of specific instruments
was because they were relatively cheap at the time (303, 808 , 909 etc) ..
I've read interviews with Kevin Saunderson where he very much says the same
thing, and he now uses Cubase and a lot of plugins.

I do know some producers that swear by their gear and refuse to use
software, but thats mainly for reasons of sound quality- as you're always
gonna get a fresher livelier mix using a combination of different sound
sources, as opposed to one output from a PC, even if its a good soundcard.

I also know a couple of people that uphold this 'ideal' about only using the
original gear. I personally feel that they are upholding some romantic ideal
that the real Detroit producers wouldn't live by.. I'm sure if Juan Atkins
were 18 now, he'd be using the newest freshest music making gear out there-
not 20 year old technology..

just to totally contradict my previous statements however, I'd love to get
my hands on some of those original bits of kit- but can't afford them!

I tend to believe, as a producer and label owner, that everyone has a right
to make a living in something that they enjoy and feel their talent lies. I
think that saying all music should be free is ridiculous. If we make
something that people enjoy, we deserve something back- so that we can go

don't live in that ideal world.. we've all got bills to pay. rant over..

Re: (313) Does the Surgeon..

2003-10-30 Thread kev
As someone new to this list, its interesting to see people discuss these
matters about Surgeon, and what is and isn't on-topic!

As far as I can see from the tracklist, though I can't listen to it yet-
there's a lot of 313 stuff and music that I consider closely related to
'Detroit Techno' in there, at the very least these tracks:

Dave Angel - Airborne (Carl Craig Drums Suck mix)
Inner City - Buena Vida (Carl Craig mix) - KMS
Kraftwerk - Tour De France - EMI
Carl Craig - Tres Demented - Planet E
Model 500 - No UFO's (D mix) - Metroplex
Underground Resistance - Amazon - UR

so as for

"basically no.
and based on the mix posted the other day, its not 313 related" it just
seems a strange comment to make based on some of the content of Surgeons
mix?

Anyhow, If I'm going to comment on this, I guess its only fair I should at
least offer my opinion. I think there's a lot of music out there that is
related to Detroit Techno- whether its the 80s Italian artists recently
discussed as inspiring the whole thing, or artists not strictly making
'techno' but still making quality electronic music derived from the city or
retaining the innovative attitude.. people such as Amp Fiddler for example..
I think all these people are fair game. (but hey, I don't make the rules!)

as for surgeon, i think his music and DJing is getting more interesting all
the time, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing him play in Manc
tomorrow night. If I get a chance to chat, I'll mention to him that he has
inspired much debate on our humble forum! Personally, I think it makes
sense to consider him as relevant to this forum, though not the 'most'
relevant of artists..

As a final thing, I'd say we're all 313 at heart, music is just something
that is very hard to pin down and what I see as Detroit, someone else
won't.. don't let the geekiness get in the way of the music!

Re: (313) Cajual / Relief

2003-10-11 Thread kev
chris

i'd definitely recommend the first Relief compilation, future sound of
chicago 1.
lots of essential stuff by sneak, paul johnson, green velvet etc.. its not
so disco orientated, but very raw and funky..

Theres also a vol2 which is v good too, compiled by Derrick Carter..

good luck searching

(313) Radio One!!!

2003-10-09 Thread kev
hello 313sters,

so far my attempts at mailing have not worked- if u are reading this- i have
finally got thru!!

anyway- radio 1.. i think they are kind of a nasty compromise.. u do get the
odd interesting mix or tune every now and then. fergie played one of my
tracks, which was nice cos there was no promotion, no hype, he just liked it
and played it.. normally, especially with the likes of tongy, seb fontaine
etc, you won't get things played unless there is serious promotion or
connections behind something.

my major problem with radio 1 is the essential mix.. it really has gone
downhill. i rememeber the days of tuning in and being surprised- new
sounds, new DJs.. now its a mixture of the same croneys, same sound most
weeks..
the recent exception being an excellent mix by DJ Heather from Chicago- that
was cool... anyway, theres my ten pence worth.. feel free to rip me to
shreds : )

Ah well..I really liked the Tiga and Playgroup remixes (apparently the
Playgroup mix came about after he was denied use of the original for his Dj
Kicks mix...and so just 're interpreted' it in the studio himself) but I
wasn't too keen on the Ghost Cauldron or Princess Superstar stuff.

it is one of my favorite labels though...so I'm very bias :)

And yes, the online shop staff are great...although I have an order thats 3
weeks late...I should really contact them

trip-hop such as Tosca... this being said, they've got a brilliant

Anything on !K7 is generally awesome...

k7.com for more stuff with a ton of real audio clips. They also let you
order some albums to download as mp3 which is pretty groundbreaking.
