The "Selections for Intercourse" CD and LP is coming out on April 9th. The LP has 8 trakcs and the CD has 13 (and is a lot more forward thinking). [313] It should be noted (re: safe in Detroit)
I've lived two blocks away from Wayne State University for six years. That is about three miles away from Hart Plaza. I live in the dreaded Cass Corridor...(now euphamisimically called midtown) I am not a intimidating person (size or shape) and have not a had problems with crime (by not drawing attention to yourself you will not have to worry). Again I would like to stress that the police and their prying eyes are the ones I would worry about. You will have many homeless people ASKING for change. (common of all major cities) But after traveling quite extensively around the USA I have to say detroit homeless have some of the most entertaining confidence scams around! Anyway, The Ramada on Bagley is one of the cheaper hotels. There is also a knights/days inn and a couple more lower class motels on East Jefferson (that is toward Belle Isle from downtown) that are really cheap if you do not mind a motel vs a hotel. No trip to detroit would be complete without a drive around the belle smokin and listen to your favorite "joint". peace matthew ________ Matthew Gerbasi |l| Darcy Detroit |l| 248-458-8567|l| [EMAIL PROTECTED] aka [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Eliminate your ego by having self confidence without pride" -- Basi >>> Tosh Cooey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 02/07/01 05:37AM >>> It should be noted that almost everyone advocating staying in downtown Detroit during the DEMF does not live there, nor have they spent any reasonable amount of time there. Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?
What I am saying is that when an artist is executing their craft they are materializing their conceptual idea through expresion. they choose what others see or hear. That does not mean that every individual "feels" the same way as the artists does, but only that everyone is exposed to the artists output. then in turn every individual makes up their own mind as to what the artist is saying and is effected by that message. that is IMO why music is so amazing. One song can mean a million different things to a million differnent people even though they are listening to the same song peace mg >>> "darw_n" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 01/22/01 05:49PM >>> > > >Art in all forms is about expression. Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?
Art in all forms is about expression. Moods & emotions that an artform creates are different in each individual. Regardless of what the means are that are used to reach the musical end. what is created is what matters. (plagerisism aside) technological advancement is not the problem. The problem starts when quality and authentisity are compromised for laziness and lack of skill.IMO peace mg >>> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 01/22/01 10:47AM >>> > Yeah, I am on the artform side. I think it will be the demise of DJing the > day that it becomes a machine-led thing. how is it any less of an "artform" when technology is involved? I think the real issue here is unwarranted nostalgia holding us back from a better experience. How can you confidently state that there's no "art" to mixing mp3s using finalscratch when you haven't even tried it, and most likely haven't even seen anyone else try it? What, just because it doesn't rely on a crappy, outdated, extremely inconvenient technology, it's not as good? It's not about "finding song x on npaster vs finding song x on a record" and which is more rewarding - of course it's more rewarding to find song x on vinyl. but try to think of the possibilities that digital mixing opens up - you could easily play your own songs, the ones you don't want to spend $50 getting an acetate cut, or even more to have it actually released. You could work in live elements, you could do effects, the creative control is only limited to what your computer can do. And remember, this system works WITH your turntables - you can still bring your records along and play them the same as you did before. You're not being asked to abandon vinyl here... just to accept the possibility that vinyl is not the end-all, be-all of mixed music. Please don't waste my time arguing practicalities like "mp3s don't sound as good" or "computers crash!" - and don't waste my time telling me vinyl is superior becuase it's what "we've always used." So what? It's romantic notions like that that'll hold the music back and let it stagnate. Of course there's room to acknowledge the past, but there's also plenty of room to move forward... the problem with accepting new technology might be striking a balance between the two... but denying new technology because it's not what we've always used is not the solution. --------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Matthew Gerbasi |l| MediaVest Detroit |l| 248-458-8567|l| [EMAIL PROTECTED] aka [EMAIL PROTECTED] "presently your future is history" -- Basi

I was in boston and I was in a bar where there was a CDJ definetly play two cd's together and beat maching them accordingly. I am not sure what type of equiptment he was using, but the mixing that he was coming from it was not one track end one track start. there was a definete third track created. Re: [313] Opinions..
>>What do you feel is missing in Detroit Musical nightlife? I think that Detroit is lacking the "intelligent" spaces such as critical. When a space is multi-funcional and many people come to a show (by word of mouth) there is an inherent respect that is created and an event becomes more than a party. When a space is used for artistic output rather than a money maker the vibe is going to be better and the people that are attracted to such a place will be more inspired. With random parties and random party promoters allowing 13 year old junkies to become the core audience of electronic music (by accepting their presence they endorse the behavior thinking any other way is denial) you jade the whole scene. What would you like to see happe, or change? The inclusion of hip hop into the techno/electro scene has been gaining acceptence on both sides. Now with the new Friday format at Motor many three floor kids are coming down. Gillespie started it off by bringing out Houseshoes. This is the type of DJ diversity we need The explosion of after hours and new weeklys that many local DJ's (Mike Clark, Theo Parrish, Wax master D-smooth, Monk)have put together have kept things real, but many more people need to start coming out and supporting these nights. >>> "Diana Potts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 11/06/00 09:13AM >>> >>What do you feel is missing in Detroit Musical nightlife? I was in Columbus this weekend, and one thing a couple Detroiters and I agreed on, is there are no more 'intelligent' type spaces for music to be heard-like the Annex in Columbus. For those that remember the Critical space...it was a loft type space where art could be seen and any type of music was likely to be heard. It was as casual as you wanted it to be (motor mouth threw some of the earliest parties there). Plus, there are no venues for music outside of techno. No venues for the Detroit hip/trip hop scene here to really develop or for the jungle scene to finally have its due (as Detroit has some really great jungle DJs to be heard). The casual days of Family Funktion seem to have gone. >What would you like to see happen, or change? Another thing noticed in Columbus was there was a blend. A blend of the indie/rock and roll crowd with the techno crowd. As it seems to be the unspoken truth that we listen to one another's music. Detroit has such a solid yet split music history with rock and roll and techno, that the two really need to meet and learn from each other. I miss the days of casual fun, perhaps we have it to blame on the invention of the martini. No more glamour clubs like Pure or some of the attitude that goes down at other places. The reason Detroit is special is because it has a unique atmosphere...this is detroit not Life or the Limelight. For some of the high school hoopla that goes on here to end. Because _then_ Detroit will actually be the force it can be.For the younger kids to care more about the music then the drugs they are swallowing and taking a moment to listen and some time to learn. (hey..u asked;) >What factors motivate you to go out...what are the hooks, >lines and sinkers...? (on the flip side) that i dont have to work the next morning, money and line up and venue. If you are asking this because you are looking to do/start something in Detroit. Do something that will bring ppl together..not seperate one crowd from the next (though with 21+ venues its hard). Do something that makes you dig a bit deeper into the city instead of something easy. d _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
