aesthetic vision of live music

2001-05-02 Thread Matthew Gerbasi

I would have to say I was drawn by the excitement
before I was drawn by the music...but in a coming of age type way.

I mean,
I still listen to the music. It's just a lot of others jump from rice to
bean

If you are talking about Improvisational

You're talkin music!!!

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a discography for::

Dark River Collective
Gilb-R
I:Cube
Quaker Cage
Kit Clayton

Hi,I just joind the list. I hope we can be productive and talk about
/'~_|TEKKNO|_~`\ a lot and have good discussions about raves and clubs and
stuff. I've been on the trance list for a while, but sonce tekkno was always my
first love, I thought I would join "313". Speaking of "313" what does "313"
mean? Is it the latin version of the "303" or something? Does anyone have any
sound samples? I'm glad to know there are a lot of 1337 producerz on the list,
I have a lot of techie type questions to ask. Talk to you soon!

Keep it real,

New World Aquarium is the one called 154, aka Jochem Peteri from this list.
His early work was as Ross 154. You will love his Strike album, coming out
on Delsin next month. He can probly give you some more info.

Read an interview from De:Bug here: http://www.delsin.org/nwaq.html

Great stuff, eh? If any of you buy my sale records I'll be converting a
sizeable chunk of those proceeds into Delsin back catalogue purchases I
think. :)

2001-04-04 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
I'm sorry if this was already discussed...

I noticed the track listing is different on the planet e release than on the
2000 black release

specifically the 4 hero track is not on the planet e.

is this track available on a vinyl single so that I do not have to spend 20
something more dollars for the import cd just to get the 4 hero and the few
other tracks only on the import?

thanks

The "Selections for Intercourse" CD and LP is coming
out on April 9th. The LP has 8 trakcs and the CD has
13 (and is a lot more forward thinking).

Titonton released his first vinyl EP entitled
Embryonic on Metamorphic in 1995. He has been featured
on 21 releases to date and is currently djing and
performing live about the US...

he is appearing at Motor on the 7th...

Any Titonton quessies, send them to me privately. I
know too much about Titonton Duvanté... he certainly
deserves a LOT more respect...

Later,
Nick:)

You could check Nortroute.net (as I've said millions
of times) but noone seems to listen to me anyway...

Titonton hasn't always been like this but he is
progressing in an interesting direction. I actually
liked his "double edged 2" mixtape... The first thing
I heard from the guy.

I spose someone else will say almost exactly the same
thing in a couple of posts and you'll all be
responding to that so Dunno why I bother really...

Re: [313] To all Detroit residence: Heidelberg Project?

the site may still be up but Tyree lost the legal battle. The art was tore
down:<{

on a side note the Ron Zakrin show that is still up at C-pop features a
painting of the siege on the Heidelberg. (a great Zakrinian peice)

I was told that the painting was purchased by GM and was donated to the DIA.
so it may be up in the DIA during the festival. Something to see if you get a

Can anyone confirm this?

they were not saying anything about getting back to
the roots, simply that live instruments will be
existing more & more in the electronic music
genres

and possibly replacing the dj/ synth or whatever
during the live show and pruducers & artist seem to be
into making this happen as of late.

At the house party I played about 4 -5 hours at last night, there were a lot
of tracks which got people moving after a lull in the energy on the dance

some memorables (a lot were from Detroit, a lot were from elsewhere):
dj rolando - the jaguar (derrik may rmx) --just bought it friday and

surgeon - waiting for me --one word--damn
fascinating rhythm (on plus 8) --presumably a reissue, since i got it a
month ago, but topsnonetheless
remainings III (drumcode 20.5) - either the d or the k mx will work with
any crowd diggingtechno
misjah on mankind (6? i think)
thewhole night went off,due in large part to all the excellent producers
whose records I'vebought.

what about Esham??? some of his stuff can be very techythat is of
course if you can get past all the evil lyrics =)
but as eminim's main influence i think he deserves more respect. he has
released over 20 albums in the 12 or so years he has been at it. there are
a couple of really good tracks on every album and to get all the good
tracks
would be impossible. but of course with all the stuff he has put out there

Deltron 3030 (most slept on of 2000)

definately Kool Keith, (he has been evolving as the experimental producer since
he began)

dj Premier: not sure of everything he has had his hand in lately?

Blackalicious and DJ Shadow have a CD together too (not sure of the name)

Pharoh Monch (sp?)

on a 313 experimental tip check out BreakBeatEtiquette at Carbon on Thursday

Feb 8 you have Detroit native back from SF MC Subverse throwing down freestyle
rhymes over breakbeat and hip hop beats by Matt Clarke and Ronin.

I believe it is only $3 entry check the detroit love board for sure or call
record time and ask matt or aaronn yourself?

[313] It should be noted (re: safe in Detroit)

2001-02-07 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
I've lived two blocks away from Wayne State University for six years. That is
about three miles away from Hart Plaza. I live in the dreaded Cass
Corridor...(now euphamisimically called midtown) I am not a intimidating
person (size or shape) and have not a had problems with crime (by not drawing
attention to yourself you will not have to worry). Again I would like to
stress that the police and their prying eyes are the ones I would worry about.
You will have many homeless people ASKING for change. (common of all major
cities) But after traveling quite extensively around the USA I have to say
detroit homeless have some of the most entertaining confidence scams around!
Anyway, The Ramada on Bagley is one of the cheaper hotels. There is also a
knights/days inn and a couple more lower class motels on East Jefferson (that
is toward Belle Isle from downtown) that are really cheap if you do not mind a
motel vs a hotel. No trip to detroit would be complete without a drive around
the belle smokin and listen to your favorite "joint".

It should be noted that almost everyone advocating staying in downtown
Detroit during the DEMF does not live there, nor have they spent any
reasonable amount of time there. I would suggest trying to find
opinions off the list from people who are more willing to be candid.

But if you do decide to stay there then don't stay anywhere except the

With the Festival going on Jefferson and Woodward will be the safest place in
the city(tons of cops just directing traffic) but actually the cops are the
ones I would worry about.

Plus dealing with the boarder everyday will be a definate drag!

plus with a room near by you can take a rest in the middle of the day!

that's rediculous. If they stay in Windsor they'll
have to deal with tunnel traffic and customs every day
.If they stay at the Ponchatrain (spelling?) they'll
be with in spitting distance of everything or even at
the RenCen.

Further the vibe that the DEMF is there to convey and
stay in Detroit.Book their rooms soon.

Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?

2001-01-22 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
What I am saying is that when an artist is executing their craft they are
materializing their conceptual idea through expresion. they choose what others
see or hear. That does not mean that every individual "feels" the same way as
the artists does, but only that everyone is exposed to the artists output.
then in turn every individual makes up their own mind as to what the artist is
saying and is effected by that message.

that is IMO why music is so amazing. One song can mean a million different
things to a million differnent people even though they are listening to the
same song

Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?

2001-01-22 Thread Matthew Gerbasi

Art in all forms is about expression.

Moods & emotions that an artform creates are different in each individual.

Regardless of what the means are that are used to reach the musical end. what
is created is what matters. (plagerisism aside) technological advancement
is not the problem. The problem starts when quality and authentisity are
compromised for laziness and lack of skill.IMO

mg
>>> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 01/22/01 10:47AM >>>

> Yeah, I am on the artform side. I think it will be the demise of DJing the
> day that it becomes a machine-led thing.

how is it any less of an "artform" when technology is involved?

I think the real issue here is unwarranted nostalgia holding us back from
a better experience. How can you confidently state that there's no
"art" to mixing mp3s using finalscratch when you haven't even tried it,
and most likely haven't even seen anyone else try it?

What, just because it doesn't rely on a crappy, outdated, extremely
inconvenient technology, it's not as good?

It's not about "finding song x on npaster vs finding song x on a
record" and which is more rewarding - of course it's more rewarding to
find song x on vinyl. but try to think of the possibilities that digital
mixing opens up - you could easily play your own songs, the ones you don't
want to spend $50 getting an acetate cut, or even more to have it actually
released. You could work in live elements, you could do effects, the
creative control is only limited to what your computer can do.

And remember, this system works WITH your turntables - you can still bring
your records along and play them the same as you did before. You're not
being asked to abandon vinyl here... just to accept the possibility that
vinyl is not the end-all, be-all of mixed music.

Please don't waste my time arguing practicalities like "mp3s don't sound
as good" or "computers crash!" - and don't waste my time telling me vinyl
is superior becuase it's what "we've always used." So what? It's
romantic notions like that that'll hold the music back and let it
stagnate. Of course there's room to acknowledge the past, but there's
also plenty of room to move forward... the problem with accepting new
technology might be striking a balance between the two... but denying new
technology because it's not what we've always used is not the solution.

Can anyone refresh my memory: who was responsible for the "New dance Show"
about 8 years ago on channel 56? I remember being in high school and I'd
rush home to hear some fresh booty tracks and see some wacky new dance
moves. My boys and I would throw down the moves at dance clubs (we were
underage of course), and at high school dances - and hell - in the hall ways
and on the football field at practice.

Now I can't remeber who's show that was. Does anyone have some archives?

I can agree about cds but here are a couple of things I would like to
one day be able to do, or see happen:

technic 1200 midi controllers
i'd love to see these made to control digital audio in a mixer so the
digital medium can be played
and interacted with like a turntable somehow
or digial tables and digital mixer so you could eventually have a show where
one dj mixes records and that digital signal is sent to the left table of
another dj, and a third dj's
mixing goes to the dj's right table
and you can pitch adjust and mix to your hearts content on those two
signals...
complicated but impressive.

oh yeah and i'd love to see one day a digital format, maybe double sided
cd's/dvd's where
one side controls lighting effects/visuals one side does the music
that would add so many more dimensions to the "mix"
i'd love it

but yeah..
records...rah.

i agree with this. i didn't even know what the hell techno was until i
went to my first rave a number of years ago. since then i've gone on to
whole-heartedly embrace this genre of music. now i think its the best
thing since sliced bread. the point is that i owe my cognizance of techno
to 'raving.' (although such formerly underground activities are no longer
AS integral for exposure to this once underground musical form as it has
recently been proliferating mainstream culture).

Re: [313] Opinions..

2000-11-06 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
>>What do you feel is missing in Detroit Musical nightlife?
I think that Detroit is lacking the "intelligent" spaces such as critical.
When a space is multi-funcional and many people come to a show (by word of
mouth) there is an inherent respect that is created and an event becomes more
than a party. When a space is used for artistic output rather than a money
maker the vibe is going to be better and the people that are attracted to such
a place will be more inspired.

With random parties and random party promoters allowing 13 year old junkies to
become the core audience of electronic music (by accepting their presence they
endorse the behavior thinking any other way is denial) you jade the whole scene.

What would you like to see happe, or change?

The inclusion of hip hop into the techno/electro scene has been gaining
acceptence on both sides. Now with the new Friday format at Motor many three
floor kids are coming down. Gillespie started it off by bringing out
Houseshoes. This is the type of DJ diversity we need

The explosion of after hours and new weeklys that many local DJ's (Mike Clark,
Theo Parrish, Wax master D-smooth, Monk)have put together have kept things
real, but many more people need to start coming out and supporting these nights.

>>What do you feel is missing in Detroit Musical nightlife?
I was in Columbus this weekend, and one thing a couple Detroiters and I
agreed on, is there are no more 'intelligent' type spaces for music to be
heard-like the Annex in Columbus. For those that remember the Critical
space...it was a loft type space where art could be seen and any type of
music was likely to be heard. It was as casual as you wanted it to be (motor
mouth threw some of the earliest parties there). Plus, there are no venues
for music outside of techno. No venues for the Detroit hip/trip hop scene
here to really develop or for the jungle scene to finally have its due (as
Detroit has some really great jungle DJs to be heard). The casual days of
Family Funktion seem to have gone.

>What would you like to see happen, or change?
Another thing noticed in Columbus was there was a blend. A blend of the
indie/rock and roll crowd with the techno crowd. As it seems to be the
unspoken truth that we listen to one another's music. Detroit has such a
solid yet split music history with rock and roll and techno, that the two
really need to meet and learn from each other. I miss the days of casual
fun, perhaps we have it to blame on the invention of the martini.
No more glamour clubs like Pure or some of the attitude that goes down at
other places. The reason Detroit is special is because it has a unique
atmosphere...this is detroit not Life or the Limelight.
For some of the high school hoopla that goes on here to end. Because _then_
Detroit will actually be the force it can be.For the younger kids to care
more about the music then the drugs they are swallowing and taking a moment
to listen and some time to learn.
(hey..u asked;)

>What factors motivate you to go out...what are the hooks,
>lines and sinkers...?
(on the flip side) that i dont have to work the next morning, money and line
up and venue.

If you are asking this because you are looking to do/start something in
Detroit. Do something that will bring ppl together..not seperate one crowd
from the next (though with 21+ venues its hard). Do something that makes you
dig a bit deeper into the city instead of something easy.

Re: [313] who stole the soul?

2000-10-02 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
The 21+ could have reduced the crowd, also Derrick May played in Lansing and
Windsor too.

respose to other responses:

Getting layed is important if your white or black. Listening to good music is
important if your white or black. Race is not the issue it is priorities and
the ability to tell the difference between good music and bad and dirty and
clean (lets say exercise) these are personal decisions.

No I think racist epithets are inappropriate. And I don't think it has
anything to do with race. The question was: why has Detroit turned a deaf
ear to its best homeboys again and again. (DEMF excluded).

Re: [313] record time

2000-09-28 Thread Matthew Gerbasi
The sound was tight with Burst in control. The music went from new Plus 8 and
went back in history from there. (I am not sure the name of the track but one
of my favorite to dance too "tour de France" vocal in it really set me off)

I did not see John or Kenny because after being up front for a half an hour I
needed a cigarette (no smoking inside) and getting back in once you went
outside was virtually impossible (all ages mad candy kids)

but closer to the end of the show it had cleared out and Richie closed out the
night. For a free show it was quite hot.

the special release CD that was suppose to be available was not because of
"manufacturing difficulties beyond their control" --quote from Clark Warner

>>> Kyle J Dupuy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 09/28/00 02:09PM >>>

well, we've heard about foran's, the dj colloquim in ann arbor, and bukem
at the state theatre. to anyone who went, how was record time last nite?
