RE: (313) Recent detroit house
Yeah, agreed, I think the Randolph joint is hot--especially the "Quote Me On That" track. The interview stuff is OK but gets old after awhile. I hope KDJ puts these tracks out on vinyl and adds some length soon. Just saw that DJ Genesis has a new record ready to pop--with mixes by Amp Fiddler and Dez. Going to see Roy Ayers tonight. Anyone caught his recent shows? I've always like his act, but sometimes he can ramble on a bit. Scott -Original Message- From: Thomas D. RE: (313) Norm Talley
Norm Talley spins with Mike Clark and Beatdown Sounds at Agave on Sunday night. I think he's sometimes a guest at the Bat Lounge in the Greektown area on Friday night--Delano Smith is the resident there I think. Also I think he sometimes spins with Eddie Fowlkes at Vivo's in Eastern Market on Saturdays. Otherwise, Fridays at Oslo have been incredible lately. RE: (313) Juan Atkins in Detroit, Friday nite
Nice! If folks can get cheap tickets to Detroit this weekend it will be well worth the money--the Jazz Festival will feature Aretha, Lou Rawls, Marcus Belgrave and a bunch of other Detroit cats--not the least of whom will be the James Carter. Also Tortured Soul will be playing in Royal Oak on Sunday. Not bad for one weekend. (313) Mixmode Records - Delano Smith's label
Don't know if folks have gotten the 3 records on Mixmode yet. I just got #2 & #3 this week. Haven't gotten #1 yet. I think they're really excellent. Delano's cut on #2, "Back in the Day", is a cold KDJ-inspired disco-loop. Tony Foster's #3 record has a spacey after-hours feel to it--but still some funky *** house. Scott
RE: (313) 3 Chairs - Chicago
Interesting. KDJ did a "Prince Party" at OSLO (Detroit) last weekend. He put up a translucent screen in front of the booth to obscure his identity. The set was excellent. Most memorable was the a very long edit of JAN with a much longer excerpt of the Prince/Mojo interview. Great night. This Saturday was a free 3 hour D May set in the recently expanded Orchestra Hall. Sweet set-up with Derrick on the second floor of a three floor atrium--with partiers above, bellow and all-around. Meanwhile Minx and Strand tore it up in an adjacent room. Best of all--no smoking inside the facility! Peace, Scott Then Moodymann took his turn sporting a freaky halloween mask, his afro all blowed out huge, and it was a Rick James (R.I.P.) love fest.. he started with 'You and I' and played it start to finish, then later 'Cold Blooded' (god i love that percussion on a big system) and lots of cool disco, also Moscow Discow, rolling stones 'Miss You' (!), the 3-Chairs 'Theme' (also featured on their new 3xLP which is great, BTW)... prince - controversy (w/ everyone singing the "people call me rude, i wish we all were nude" part, hah), anyway if you like dirty disco and detroit house and occasional italo and dusty dance oddities, these guys deliver. Though I usually have no idea what these guys are playing, KDJ seemed to stick to some of the more recognizable cuts but this was fine with the crowd to be sure. peace -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com
RE: (313) Techno Geography
Interesting comments. I too think about this kind of stuff alot. A few thoughts: I ended up in Detroit (city) 10 years ago this summer--coming from rural Indiana--when I got a job in Detroit rather than Chicago, my first choice. At the time I knew next-to-nothing about Detroit techno, except what a good friend had told me about a party he had attended where D Wynn, D May and R Hawtin changed his life forever--later I figured out that it was in the Packard Plant. Back in Indiana my buddy turned me on to the sounds of the Chicago and Detroit underground. I had to check-out that scene once I arrived in Detroit. I went to a party at the Packard Plant and I have been a fan and amateur DJ of Detroit-inspired techno and house ever since. I have often mused about what makes Detroit such a special place, being the soil in which soul, funk, techno and house have taken firm root and flourished. While Detroit has well-known negatives, these limitations (like someone said earlier) can be extremely rich sources of inspiration. I think this is why Detroit is such fertile ground for strong and self-directed people. However, many places have these same limitations, and sources of inspiration, but these cities did not oversee several musical revolutions, and perennially produce the remarkable musical talents of Detroit. Why Detroit? My personal opinion about this is that Detroiters (at least since the 20s) have been free-thinking, forward-looking, embracing of democracy and technology, but skeptical of Amerika. (The Diego Rivera mural in the Detroit Institute of Arts sums it up best for me). Detroiters have fought (for real) for their place in the middle-class. I believe that this struggle, and the passion for a better life and a more just world, comes through in the music and gives it the unique Detroit quality--at once dark and bluesy and optimistic and forward-thinking. Looking back over these last 10 years of my life (funny that it coincides with this list's anniversary), the people of Detroit have changed me in very positive, personal ways. But, it is the music that has always hooked me in, kept me refreshed and happy to stay put. I'm very proud of Detroit and its accomplishments, musically and otherwise. I want to thank the members of this list for reminding me of the greatness of this city, day in and day out. Peace, Scott Check it out: Commentator Cornel West talks with NPR's Tavis Smiley about why he thinks Detroit, Mich., is the music capital of black America. http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=3179105 -Original Message- From: fwdthought [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 04, 2004 6:52 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Techno Geography Friends, I think all of this talk on geography and how it affects our productivity/ involvement/ opportunities as producers, djs, artists, fans etc. is a key topic. It matters, and it does not matter. First, I must quote The Pet Shop Boys... "...there's a lot of opportunities, if there are'nt you can make them..." I've been very tempted to move to Detroit. However, after questioning my motivations, I see that by doing so, I am only chasing myths and ghosts of what I think a "Detroit" experience "should" be. I can say that the few times I have visited, I have been completely blown away: the sincere people, Detroit's love of ALL music, Detroit's freakishness...and of course all of the incredible artists that populate that city, in their varied mediums, not just techno music. I'm talking photgrapy, advertising, graphic design, political thought, journalism. Detroit Rock City! Godamn it! I really think you are born into it and must have it in your blood and veins. I am happy with the idea that it CANNOT be transplated by a simple change of geography. (Apply to your dream city/ situation of choice) Great teachers want their disciples to spread the word, set up their own churches, communes, record labels, clubs, 'zines...etc. Detoit is the teacher. RE: (313) my personal experience at movement
Hello All, The UR party was one of my top 5 events of all time--number 1 as I write this. Timeline far exceded my very high expecations--not merely playing live instruments/efx machines over the top of UR classics, but completely reworking the orginals to the point it sometimes took several minutes to figure out which track they were working out. They closed with this absolutely amazing soul/gospel jam that must have gone on for 15-20 minutes. Chuck of UR had the coolest projections/mini-movies for each song too. What an awesome show. Can't remember seeing a better--except maybe Amp on Saturday night, but that's another story. So many great sets all weekend long. There's an interesting story in the Detroit Free Press today. Yeh, Omar S 002 is wonderful, but I personally like 003 even more. It's incredible. Hard to categorize this music, sorta basic channel meets deep moody house. If you see 003 I would not pass it up. Agreed, there are many many great gospel house records, and many not so good ones. A few of my favorites are: Kenny Bobien, "Why We Sing" & "I Shall Not Be Moved" Su Su Bobien, "I Can't Keep It To Myself" Vernessa Mitchell, "Higher" Kerri Chandler, "Hallelujah" For a release with the gospel house sound but w/o the supernatural references, this one kills it: DJ Oji & Una, "We Lift Our Hands In The Sanctuary" (Sancsoul Records) 2003 Scott -Original Message- From: Cobert, Gwendal [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 3:53 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) TP - was Re: (313) That Friday Question/Claude Young Mixes "Gospel house" ??? TP has a semi-regular gig on Detroit Public Schools' radio (90.9) Monday gospel house show and it's always very fun and entertaining. I love that garage-gospel house that he plays even though I can't relate to all of it. And his ability to work a mixer and efx...incredible! RE: (313) Detroit schools to cut 3,200 jobs
As I heard on the Detroit public schools radio station here this morning--the cuts are the result of two things: a state-wide 55 cent per pupil reduction, and a federal reduction due to the fact that other cities (like the D.C. public schools) are getting a bigger share of previously allocated "poverty funds." In other words, other schools are now as poor or poorer than the Detroit public schools and therefore get some of Detroit's money. Got to balance that budget. It's unbelievable. RE: (313) Detroit schools to cut 3,200 jobs
I think the more obvious answer to this puzzle lies in who will benefit from the 35 million. Suburban law-makers are willing to help Detroit if they get something out of it in terms of contracts and a big urban playground for sports, clubs, condos, etc. If it's just money for helping city kids learn to read, forget about it. I think the main thinking behind this, is that it can help more money come into the city through alternate means, and hopefully get some of those teaching jobs back. Not sure what I think personally... dns
RE: RE: (313) Detroit schools to cut 3,200 jobs
Relating this to music, I personally fear that the DPS radio station will be forced to make drastic cuts in staff and programming. This is probably one of the few stations in the country to have a daily house show from 4-6p with guest DJs 3 days a week--folks like T. Parker, Rick Wilhite, Minx, Al Ester, etc. Although much less tragic than the loss of 700 teachers--an institution that would be missed by many here. (313) New Prescription Record
Last weekend I grabbed this new Prescription Record (PRI 001A) titled ABYEE by Armon Bazile, with tracks "Deepblak'd" on A and "You In Love" on B. Ron Trent doing A&R. I really like this record, although it has a kinda slick and airy production. However, the beats on both tracks are open and sparse, making for nice mixing. The A side is particularly nice because it has a very tasteful MLK sermon bit on the second half of the track--and it's not the I have a dream speech which has been played to death. Judging from the thank-yous and such on the back of the record, it appears that Mr. Bazile is from SF/Oakland area. He didn't show up on my discogs search but perhaps he has recorded under pseudonyms. Anyone have more info? Scott

You can't get Ethiopian in Detroit any longer, have to go to Windsor (via Tunnel Bus) to Marathon, but the price is right and the food is great. Noteworthy downtown spots include: Cafe D' Troit (on Library street) for good sandwiches, cheap Odawala bars, and free wireless internet; Detroit Beer Co. (on Broadway) for excellent micro-brews and nice eats for all tastes. RE: (313) Kraftwerk (Not a spoiler - don't worry)
Yeah, I think there must be some frustration going on for Derrick to be so open about the money problems in his interviews. I'm guessing sporsorship is a major issue. In Detroit there's always going to be this extra race factor thrown in when dealing with the major sponsors. While Derrick tries to pitch a multi-racial, world-class event, I'm sure the sponsor are like, you want us to give you money for some hip-hop/rnb (read black) music festival. Got to be alot of pressure. I'm not mad at him. But I understand Yussel's point that that expressing these frustrations in public (e.g. Coleman Young) doesn't help the festival or Detroit. Just give us what you got Derrick. It'll be great. Scott > On one hand I agree that talking about fees can be tacky. But on the other hand, Derrick may have felt he needed to say exactly WHY Kraftwerk wouldn't be at Movement. Like someone else said, they've always been considered the "ultimate booking" for this festival and a lot of people are wondering why it hasn't happened yet. > But you know someone will say that it's still Derrick's fault for not being able to get enough sponsorship dollars to pay for Kraftwerk. It seems like he's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.
RE: (313) Kraftwerk - what you can do to bring them to Movement
The closest I could find from Wikipedia.org-- Kling Klang is Kraftwerk's studio in Dusseldorf, Germany. It is named after an early Kraftwerk song of the same name from Kraftwerk 2. The studio, or at least an office is located in Mintropstra?e 16, in the middle of Dusseldorf red light district. Outsiders are not welcome. > Should we start a letter-writing campaign to Kraftwerk though, to get them to reconsider and try to work it out and make it possible? :) Everybody mail them a postcard from where you're from.. email never has the same effect. What's a street address to reach them? -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com
RE: (313) Craftwork (Not a spoiler - don't worry)
I tend to agree--now is the time for Kraftwerk at Movement. I can't believe GM/Ford/Chrysler couldn't drop the cash for this. It would be the show of the century. The audience base for KW is massive--you can hear their stuff on every single radio station in Detroit sometime during the week. Scott > I'm going to surmise that because Goldenvoice (Coachella festival promoters) probably paid them what they were asking, they probably figured "Oh, Movement, another festival, we'll ask the same amount". - Greg
RE: (313) Kraftwerk (Not a spoiler - don't worry)
I posted part of an interview w/ D May on Sat. It was in Motormouth monthly (a small independent rag here in Detroit) and done by Liz Copeland who is a much respected NPR DJ and journalist here. Anyway, I don't know if Derrick was trying to stir up controversy as he seems like to do, but he did say that KW wanted 6 figures. He also said he lost like $170k on last year's event, but is going forward again this year. Plans to have 50/50 Detroit vs non-Detroit artists. As much as I would love to see KW at the festival, and am kind of T-ed off at them for charging so much, I sooo wish I could get out of going to my Grandma's 90th for their show in Toronto on April 23rd. (313) Movement 2004
Just picked up the March Motormouth monthly today at Record Time. There's an interesting interview with Derrick May about the festival. Anyway, here's an excerpt: mm: Can you tell us who will be playing this year? DM: We're hoping to get Erykah Badu. We wanted Radiohead, but they couldn't do it. We put in for Air; we're just waiting for callbacks on a lot of people. Francois K is coming back. Yello is not available. We're trying to get in touch with Mr. Eno--we really want to bring him. We're working with the French and Dutch ministries of Culture to bring over acts for a multicultural stage. We're not having all of the Detroit artists coming back, because if we really want to elevate this thing we have to share the wealth. I can't say anyone's confirmed--we wont's even sign contracts until the 1st of April. On act that we really did want to bring is Kraftwerk, but they wanted 6 figures Elsewhere Derrick says that Carl and Kevin will only be involved in promoting/advertising the festival--not in the organization or management. RE: (313) axis
I know that Kenny (Dixon Jr.) and probably Jeff give away a bunch of records to other DJs, friends, promoters, etc. so that they are probably not making quite as big a profit as it might seem on these limited pressings. I don't see that as greed but just part of the game; for the people who can afford to support this game by purchasing these releases great; for the rest of us, we have to resort to hearing the music some other way. That's life. Scott Ellis -Original Message- From: Matt Chester [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 11:48 AM To: 313 Detroit Subject: Re: (313) axis Well, Jeff can get paid upwards of £5000 for a two hour set - I think he's doing pretty well financially. And as for making money off a label, even the biggest majors don't just jack up the price by 50% per release to make a bigger profit (though of course they DO inflate prices - and we all bitch about it). I've absolutely nothing against the man making a living off of his art - more power to him, he definitely deserves it. But there's a difference between making a living and ripping off people whilst demanding their support. I'm not accusing him of selling out, I think that's a whole different kind of attitude - I just think the pricing of this series is very greedy... - Original Message - From: atomly To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 5:00 PM Subject: Re: (313) axis [Matt Chester <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>] > At the moment, if I press up 800 copies of a release it costs about > ?1200 (less in N.America), and on a standard price to distributors > (which = about ?5.50 in the stores) it takes about 500 sales to break > even. Whilst the figures for a small independant label are > tight as hell, I seriously doubt raising the prices will help - > distributors and stores would take an accordingly higher cut, and > sales would probably drop a bit as people find their addictions harder > and harder to sustain. But the man isn't trying to just break even. You're forgetting about packaging, press, etc. costs, overhead for the label (employees and such) and the fact that Jeff Mills actually wants to make a living off of this. If he sold them for cost, it wouldn't get him anywhere. That's one thing that always struck me as odd. I don't know how many times I've heard people grumble about labels or promoters making money off of music (not to say you were saying this or that Axis is charging any sort of a fair price, this is just a tangent)-- I know I even did as a punk teenager. After throwing shows and releasing records, I think it's absurd to ask people to put that much of their money at risk and to devote that much time and effort to something and only be able to barely break even, otherwise they're a sellout. -- :: atomly :: [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] : www.atomly.com ... Obviously, a top 50 is overkill, but if I didn't do it this way, it would've been an albums versus singles thing, and both have seen tons of activity. Ultimately, you can never give good artists/releases too much recognition, and I would've felt like some of these folks had been slighted by their omission. Also, the sheer quantity of good material means that many of these have not seen as much platter time as they deserve, but I've never felt as on top of such a broad range of music before, and I think this chart represents some of that diversity. This is a sampling of the 300 or so records that came my way this year (and I know there are a few like the Andres stuff, the Dan Curtin on Downlow, the new Amp Fiddler, some Rob Hood and some brand new releases that I've missed, to name but a few). RE: (313) Work posts and blank
Michael, Your answers remind me of the Gil Scott-Heron poem used on Moodymann's Amerika record--Bicentennial Blues. That line kills me when he says: "The blues grew up, but America did not." How true Cornell West has also discussed the connection between African vocal traditions, slavery, blues, jazz, soul, He did an interview on Tavis Smiley's show a few months back where CW said something like: The blues has hope, not the pollyannic hope of pop music, but a mature hope, a blood soaked, tear stained hope. Well, I don't think I could explain any better what I appreciate about Detroit techno/house than that. You can hear it, or suggestions of it, in African vocal music from Senegambia to the Congo, and it has special significance among the Akan-speaking people of Ghana, who suffered the depredations of English and American slavers through most of the period of the slave trade. Akan is a pitch-tone language in which rising emotion is expressed by falling pitch, and in Akan song rising emotion is often expressed by flattening the third. There seems to be a direct continuity between this tendency and blues singing, for blues singers habitually use falling pitches to raise the emotional temperature of a performance. Usually these falling pitches are thirds, but Muddy Waters and other vocalists and guitarists from the Delta tradition also employ falling fifths, often with shattering emotional effect." It's not a great leap to follow the tradition - MEK

Sorry to be a purveyor of bad taste ;) Maybe Felix sould've left Nina alone I can accept that. However, as to a separate point, I personally like allot of what Felix has been doing over the last couple of years. I think he has managed to make house music allot more accessible for many people who grew up during the 80s and parted ways with dance music when synch-pop and new wave faded. Although Felix has sort of shamelessly exploited the whole glitz s**t, I don't believe he's all about that either. Some of the mixes and sets during the last few years really reached deep into the dark internal realm that much of the best techno also mines, meanwhile crossing genres and generations. On a different subject, I would really like to hear that King Britt track. Which song does he remix? What label is it on? I heard it on the radio late night here in San Diego. That would be the only time I have heard it, and it was probably the only time it has ever been played on the radio here on the un-creative capital of the radio. I don't think that Felix Da Housecat has been all that great here in the last couple of years. I havn't ever heard anything off the Clashbakk label that I thought was all that great in the last few year. Now, *that* was an excellent and respectful reinterpretation. It was not a bootleg, definitely label-sanctioned. It was from a compilation if memory serves, similar in concept to what verve is doing, but much better. my cdn .02. andrew duke >
RE: (313) Alton Miller on Peacefrog
I assume you mean 'Choose to Believe'? Excellent song. I totally missed it on the first (and even second) listen. The vocals really capture the essence of Detroit/urban-style poetry--deep and reflective with rhythmic phrasing. And what devastating words: Even when she protects his good name Even while she brings him back to his life-time And love was all that she had To give It still wasn't ever enough Now That's the last act For me the music does a very nice job of accompanying and highlighting the vocals--without going too far off into AM's more noodly brand of keyboard driven smooth jazz. I find that I enjoy his music the most when he keeps things more minimal and understated--witness 'Shine on Me.' Scott -Original Message- From: Thomas D. RE: (313) Alton Miller on Peacefrog
As for Stories... I didn't pick it up but have given it a few listens and couldn't really justifying getting it based on the few songs I really liked. Subsequently I found a copy of the single and remixes of "Shine on Me" on KDJ. I like the keys on that track alot and Moodymann does nice work with it as well--the mixes are actually quite different than the version on Silence Anyway, that acquisition satisfied my interest in Stories... for the moment, but maybe I'll change my mind. It certainly has some very nice moments. Has anyone else gotten a copy of the record simply titled "Brothers" on Kif? I would put it in the vein of Osunlade. I'm really enjoying this record right now. (313) OT - RE: (313) Religion
In the liner notes of two recent LPs by Rob Hood and Suburban Knight they both wax (no pun intended) very religious--I would say evangelical in fact. For some reason this really surprised me because I always thought about Detroit techno as kind of atheistic (death of god) type music. Anyway, it doesn't really bother me that these artists were inspired by God or some higher power. It gives me a different appreciation of their art. I agree that the Lutheran church is pretty non-threatening for the most part. They tend to lean toward the liturgical side (keeping the sacraments of the Catholic church) as compared to Baptists (who came out of the counter-reformation) who are suspicious of ritual. The Lutheran church like other major denominations is split into a million factions--liberal, moderate, and conservative. Musically my experience with the Lutheran church is that it tends to be quite extraordinary, though leaning toward the classical side of things. They will often have several choirs and a small orchestra--often with professionally trained musicians. As a generalization I would say that the Lutheran church tends to stress the more classical aesthetic aspects of worship, than the Baptists or example. However, the Baptists would likely respond that they leave more room for freer, more participatory expression, like gospel. Of course there are a million different kinds of Baptists too. As for Detroit, I'm only a transplant here so I can't say what it was like 20 years ago, but it seems that there are alot of Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopalian (ie, liturgical) churches around. Many have lost much of their membership due to white flight but many African Americans choose to worship at these churches. In fact there are very large numbers of African American Catholics in Detroit (and Chicago). In fact our former mayor (Dennis Archer) is Catholic. While all of these churches have no doubt been influenced by gospel many still maintain the more grandiose classical music tradition. So for example, it wouldn't be unusual at all if Carl Craig grew up in one of these more liturgical/classically oriented churches. I think this is really topical actually, especially when you look at TP's transformation. The Lutheran church in the states is not very racialized, like the Baptist church, for instance - but the Lutheran church is quite large and generally has an appeal for those who might question other aspects of society, while looking for a metaphysical solution with a group behind it. It's one of the most inclusive sects that I've dealt with. For instance, I was never Lutheran, but I sang in a Lutheran choir when I was a kid - went to church with Lutherans, etc. From the outside, I think it's looked at as quite an innocuous religious choice, in my experience anyway. There are tons of examples of the influence on techno and house, and I totally agree that it is fascinating, and a very interesting issue for discussion. It typically gets lumped into agree/disagree mode, which I think is quite small minded. I'm not religious in any way, but I love the effect that passionate involvement in religion has on music for everyone. As a listener, I don't really care what someone is passionate about, as long as it transfers into their expression. Obviously, I still invoke my own political views, but religion can be deeply personal, and I think it serves some people very well - just as it harms others.
