i was there too and inside the venue when the cops showed up. after
the bust, john and boomer were on their way back to london when they
got puled over by a ohio state trooper and because boomer had/has a
lot of tattoos he was singled out for what these days at airports
would be called "selective secondary screening".

who was the dude at the party with all the old IBM computers that was
supposed to do all the literal "computer music" ambient stuff in the
second room?

On Oct 26, 2009, at 11:01 PM, Mike Brown wrote:

As one of the people who was putting on that event/debacle ('Voodoo'
in Sept.

1994), I'm really interested in hearing Acquaviva's story.

At the make-up party the following summer ('Fantastic Voyage'),
Acquaviva tore

it *up*.

A long time ago, I wrote this about Voodoo:

Security arrived on the scene and found a theatre building had been
transformed into a fantastic performance space, and several dozen
people
milling around waiting for the doors to open. Not knowing what to
do, they
called the venue's management, trying to find someone who could tell
them

whether everything was OK. The only person they could find was equally
uninformed, but pretended to have the authority to disperse the
crowd and

cancel the event.

When the promoters called that person's authority into question and
produced
evidence that the space had been legitimately rented, the dubious
venue
representative felt threatened and had security bring in the local
police. By
coincidence, county sheriff deputies had been responding to a bogus
riot call
at a college in another town. So not only did the police show up,
but a

squadron of officers in full riot gear arrived as well.

In spite of contractual obligations, the venue renter, who was
present the
whole time, caved under the pressure and agreed to let the party be
shut down.
There was nothing we could do. Meanwhile, hundreds of carloads of
people

arriving for the party were told to turn around.

By 1am or so, what was left of Voodoo was moved to a club in Dayton.
It lasted
just long enough for Joey Beltram to spin for a packed house. But
then the
club owner, who had insisted on charging people extra to get in, got
cold feet

and closed down early.

A lawsuit was later filed against the original venue. The matter was
eventually settled out of court. The proceeds, after expenses,
helped defray

the cost of Fantastic Voyage.

On behalf of the Illuminators, I apologize to anyone who came out
for Voodoo
and felt they wasted their time and money. There is nothing worse
for a
promoter and performers than to have many months of planning and
commitments
of time & money turned upside-down by losing the space at the last
moment. We
hope we made it up to everyone with the amazing event that was
Fantastic

Voyage.

heh...i remember back around the same time going with vapourspace to
meet up with john for a party they were both playing at in london. it
was a rickety old barn and it was probably about 30 degrees out. marks
gear, which was about as much as you used to travel with back then was
set up in the loft part, which we expected to collapse any second, or
at the very least what passed as the stairs stranding us up top.
apparently the farmer wasnt quite aware of what he had agreed to, or
was misled as to what would be transpiring and starting about 130am he
would come out every 20 minutes or so to pull the plug on the
generator. he allegedly appeared with his shotgun at one point. the
more i think about it i cant even remember if mark or john even wound
up playing or if the party continued. i wonder if those were the same
kids?

actually, i think the only party i even went to in london that wasnt
thoroughly backwoods country was the one you played at in the old
whorehouse with all the secret passageways. ahhh...those were the
days, eh?

next time you talk with acquaviva ask him about riding back with
omegaman from the party at antioch college in ohio that the SWAT team
showed up at in full-on riot gear before it even started because the
university found out what was going on. rumor has it that there might
have been a strip search involved ;)

That photo reminds me of the time I was booked to do a gig in
London, Ontario. It was an early 1990's ISDN hookup which was
supposed to link this auditorium @ the University in London, Ontario
with Noam Chomsky in Cambridge and Timothy Leary, Genesis P-Orridge
and Ogre from Skinny Puppy in Los Angeles and I was booked to travel
to Canada to play the after party. Since I spoke to Tim and Gen and
confirmed they were supposed to be involved in this event I
committed just before I traveled to the UK to do a bunch of gigs
over there. Which meant I couldn't do The Orbit club in Leeds
because I agreed to do this gig. Unfortunately, the kids promoting
this gig were the most disorganized lot of idiots I've ever
encountered.

Normally, I would visit John Acquaviva and crash at his house on my
travels to and from Detroit but his wife was having their first
child that weekend so I flew to Buffalo, NY rented a car at my own
expense so there wouldn't be any trouble with work permits since I
traveled with a substantial amount of equipment at the time. Then I
drove to the hotel and the room wasn't paid for so I had to put my
card down for that. Finally got in touch with the promoters and was
hanging out in my room with Richie Hawtin's buddy Rob Calisto and
the promoters had to spill the beans. The University didn't like
what they were doing and they didn't want any rave to happen on
campus and they pulled their ISDN connection which were quite
expensive to do at the time. So no Noam Chomsky. Because Timothy
Leary lived in Beverly Hills he knew some computer whizzes who could
link up and transmit to the University auditorium. Genesis P-
Orridge lived in Northern California at the time so he didn't make
it to LA because the promoters didn't sort that out and I guess Ogre
just blew them off.

So I traveled all the way there and they got some of the money they
guaranteed me delivered to the Hotel which didn't even cover the
costs I had laid out. They asked if I would make some sounds in the
auditorium that would not be able to be heard but would be
transmitted to LA so Timothy Leary could hear it which I agreed to.
Now Tim was pretty deaf and wore hearing aids so this whole booking
was devolving into idiocy but they guaranteed my fee but they said
they couldn't pay me the balance due which was substantial. So I
got them all in the station wagon which I rented and explained to
them that we were going to go around to all their bank machines and
collect what we could. Then they tried to pay me off with magic
mushrooms. One of them then made me drive to his brothers, who was
a drug dealer and they came up with most of the cash magically!
These kids were really arrogant and thought they could pull this
whole event off while they were all f*ed up on mushrooms and it was
a complete and utter disaster. So I collected most of my fee and
called John Acquaviva and went over to his house, chatted, had a
nightcap laughing at what a bunch of idiots they were.

When I got back home I called up Timothy Leary and we had a funny
chat about the whole event. He was completely hammered and
hilarious with the students. When the Q&A happened he just nailed
them because these kids were all tripping their brains out and
couldn't string a coherent sentence together and Tim was merciless
on them. He just called them out on their "mindless blabbering" and
scared the sh*t out of them. Ahh, memories...

Re: (313) Plastikman Live in Montreal 06.03.04

2004-03-03 Thread jonathan morse
Ahhh yes...spastik. what a moment in history. hot as fuk, both literally and
figuratively. all I gotta say is thank god I was right behind rich and the
whole set up with he rest of the gang when the DPD came through with the
pepper spray and that there was a rather large garage-type door behind us
all leading into the open air =)

I still have all sorts of souvenirs and mementos from that night, including
a "planet e" squirt gun.

and the transcendence parties...just as sick. especially the speedy j live
party in 1996.

those were the days...

(313) Q's for expats

2004-02-10 Thread jonathan morse
I am giving strong consideration to relocating overseas due to some recent
upheavals in my personal life. im not running away or going on the lam or
anything like that, its just that I am once again in a position that
something like this would be feasible.

I was primarily thinking london or amsterdam but am also considering
cologne, berlin or stockholm.

I know there are resource sights for wanna-be expats but I was looking for
some personal experiences (costs, logistics, employments issues, etc.)

feel free to reply privately via email or IM (screen name 'offeweiten')

(313) RIAA v. DJ's

2004-01-30 Thread jonathan morse
DJs mix CDs attacked in attempt to control copyright

Words: Terry Church

The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched
a new campaign against DJs in an attempt to control copyright infringement.

They have already confiscated $100,000¹s worth of mix CDs
from independent record stores across the US.

DJ mix CDs, sold in almost every independent record store are
on the whole unlicensed and technically illegal to distribute. However,
DJs and producers alike often rely upon these illegal mixes in order
to gain credibility, and to promote themselves to the general public.

The practice is in fact approved of by most producers who see it
as fundamental to the survival of the dance scene - even if it is
their tracks that are being copied and played without permission.
This latest attack by the RIAA is therefore hypocritical
they claim that their pursuit of copyright infringement is primarily
in the interest of the artist, yet most dance producers actually
approve of and rely upon this illegal distribution.

The dance scene relies upon these Œillegal¹ ways tosurvive,
and it seems that the only people who actually care about
this particular copyright infringement are not the artists themselves
but the record companies who are only involved in the dance
scene for profit.

2004-01-21 Thread jonathan morse
when I was a kid I used to see that all the time on records and thought that
when someone from a radio station went to a second hand shop to sell them
and pocket a few bucks that the clerk was supposed to be not only an
upstanding citizen, but a champion for artists rights and refuse to buy them
because they were promos but then I became older and jaded and realized
that it probably had something to do with tax deductions for promotional
expenses.

life just isnt the same once the magic and innocence are gone...

ok, at the risk of coming across as jaded...granted these are only 30 sec RA
clips and not on a home/club system or pitched up/down but having been
around for the DBX "classics" I'd rather listen to those and reminisce then
revisit the sound/style ten years later. not that these aren't good tracks

than recent DBX rehashes.

anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

or both does that mean that he/she makes out three ways financially - for
doing the mix, for licensing the tracks from the label to the mix and for
creating the track that¹s licensed from the label to the mix?

the claude young "concentration factor" ep is probably one of my all time
favourite detroit tracks from that period. the mike dearborn releases on
djax are his best work too in my ever so humble opinion

as for luke slater, I lost interest after his remix of ken ishii's 'extra'

Re: (313) was groovetech now itunes

2003-09-23 Thread jonathan morse
I was thinking along that lines too, but in this case apple and their itunes
music store are still a middle man in as much as a record label or
distributor is a middle man. the artist who sells their wares through iTMS
still only recieves a cut of the .99 cents per track just as they only
receive a cut of the selling price regradless if its wholesale or retail
from a 'hard copy' release. I would guess that the day isnt too far off when
you see artists/labels selling their output direct to consumers online using
a similar business plan, especially given the advent of technologies like
final scratch. yes, there is somethng to be said for a slab of vinyl but the
overheads and prfofit margins for establishing and operating a
direct-dowload label would have to be better than for a traditional label I
would think, even if only slightly, which still puts more money in the
pocket of the artist/label owner.

personally, I know I much prefer being able to listen to the tracks on line
from a 12" or LP and purchase only the ones I want at a buck a pop (see the
poker flat web site) vice dropping $10 - $20 bucks for the actual release in
a retail outlet for the other tracks I didn¹t want

I have never seen Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk play. He, Claude Young and

gonna
be in Chicago from probably the 5th or 6th - 9th of September before I

and
if he plays in Europe with any regularity. For that matter, what does
he do

I think that the reason it's only written for BeOS, not Mac or
Windows, is

because of the audio latency. The last I heard they had it down to
like 5

ms or something. If anyone has ever seen BeOS in action it's pretty
impressive. There's no way a Mac or a Windows machine could handle
audio

latency that low.

And 5 ms still isn't all that great for DJ uses, at least in my
opinion.

its pretty well accepted in the world of psychology/psychoanalysis that
those who persecute or put down others in this manner usually are doing
so out of a deep rooted self-loathing based on the realization and
subsequent repression of the true nature of their own character.

this is most notable in homophobic personalities and one cant help but

COMPOSURE OFFICIAL RELEASE PARTIES

Montreal Feb 15th @ Laika : 6-9pm
Toronto Feb 28th @ Mission (Element Bar) : 10-3am

LABEL: FORCE LAB

RELEASE DATE: February 2002

TITLE: Force Lab Edition - Composure, Mixed By ALGORITHM

Also features previously unreleased material from:

Electric Birds, OZY, Rabbits, Yagya and Bizz Circuits.

With over 12 years of DJing under his belt, Algorithm is undisputedly
one

of

Canada's techno pioneers and easily one of the most skilled DJ's in N.
America. His passion for emerging new sounds in electronic music have
kept
him a gem of the underground scene, though he can be found performing
at

some of the world's leading events and clubs.
The Force Lab imprint has been the 12" home for both Mille Plateaux and
Force Inc. artists to experiment in sounds that could work on the dance
floor...through this combination, we feel one of the most innovative
mix
CD's has emerged. Algorithm takes the mix CD to new levels with
Composure,

layering and remixing over 300 loops from the catalog and re-processing

them

with his signature mixing style. Composure takes you to the point where

over

7 different tracks are working seamlessly together! Beyond the typical
click-techno and into something totally new, Composure set's a new

standard

for today's technology driven mix CD.

Project Synopsis :

Force Lab Edition - Composure
Composure was designed in a multithread process with a variety of
media.

The

original mixes were composed on Technics 1200's from the vinyl catalog
releases. Unreleased material was taken from .wav files and then

integrated

into the mix. Each track was then discreetly edited into single

instruments
and loops of various lengths. Then, complimentary versions of loops
were
resaved with different EQ settings, transitions and effects. Each
artist

was
initially remixed with their own material and then recombined with
other
artists. Over 300 loops and individual instruments were cut out of the
bed
mixes and recomposed. At times, 8 different Force Lab artists are
layered
and combined. For the final process of Composure, multiple variations
of
combined loops and instruments of various tracks were macrocomposed
into
primary sequences, continually bounced to larger macrosequences, until
the

end result emerged as the full length CD.

[313] the promised land?

2002-01-18 Thread jonathan morse

i thought this was amusing...

The score

In the early 90s, Decca Aitkenhead fell in love with club culture - and
ecstasy - while a student in Manchester. Ten years on, she wanted to
know if that heady mix was still to be found - and if so, where. So
along with her husband Paul she set off around the world with one aim:
to find the perfect E. In the first of two exclusive extracts from her
new book, they travel from the mean streets of Detroit to the hippy
haven of San Francisco

Re: [313] Apollo and Early 90s UK techno

2001-08-30 Thread jonathan morse
there was a person here in rochester in the early 90's named tim prezzano
who had 3 ep's out on GPR under the name nev. last i knew he was in nyc. his
www.nevsound.com website is still up but looks like it hasnt been updated in
a few years.

there was a feature and unreleased track of his on 'trance atlantic express'
along with the same from carl craig, kenny larkin, aux88, juan atkins, eddie
fowlkes, mark gage, dan curtin, himadri, jamie hodge, plastikman and fred
gianelli among others.

the same people who put that comp out also had a series titled 'trance
europe express' and the first 2 volumes were all old UK techno. mostly
ambient and proto-trance type stuff.

some of the early rising high stuff too is really good as is 'colourform' by
the higher intelligence agency and the first two 'a.d.' comps or the

perhaps, but i was really referring to established labels (such as transmat,
planet e, plus8/m_nus, moods and grooves, UR, etc to keep it 313 related)
and the artists who release on them that would benefit from this, not your
typical mp3.com artist whose material isnt quite in the same league in terms

just think of what it will do to artist exposure as well as profit margins.
the up front cost of maintaining an FTP server is nothing compared to those
of pressing and distributing vinyl let alone the fact that there's the
potential to sell hundreds of thousands or copies of a given track worldwide
