okay. if youre gonna pull the "24 Hour..." card I gotta trump you with the
movie "Party Monster". Set during the heyday of the old LImelight in NYC and
stars Seth Green and Macaully Chaulkin as the ultimate clubkids. the music
is great (for us geezers, that is) and the plot and acting is pretty funny.
it's based on a true story. also: the best part is "Phez" from That 70's
Show plays Superstar DJ Keioki!!

"If all else fails, just play techno. everyone will think youre cutting
edge."

just one of the hilarious quotes from the movie :^)

hey! now youre treading on dangerous grounds mister! I for one love seeing
the comic book heroes I loved as a kid brought to life on the big screen.
It's great to see how faithful hollywood is to a superheroes or
supervillians origins, powers, and weaknesses. The greatest comic book movie
still remains, in my opinion, the first Batman movie. it was nearly perfect!
showing how The Joker made Batman and how Batman made The Joker, how Bruce
Wayne was just as much of a psycho as the criminals he fought (why else
would a millionaire/playboy put on a bat costume and fight crime at night?
he must have something not right in the head). I think XMen 2 is a close
second. Spiderman was pretty good, but Spidey 2 was a little too "talkey"
and had holes in the plot. I'm looking forward to seeing Silver Surfer, and
Fantastic Four, but I'm not getting myhopes up for the Electra movie.
Nothing will ever compare the the Frank Miller Daredevil/Electra storyline.
I bet Hollywood cartoons her up. but I hope not.

for some reason, when I think "techno films" futuristic/SciFi films rarely
pop into my head. does that make me an abomination?

I think of movies like Snatch, Kill Bill, Unbreakable, Seven, Fight Club,
The Fifth Element (okay so one SciFi film maybe), Frailty, John Woo or
Kirosawa (sp?) films, and of course the ultimate techno film: Trainspotting,
and the original Twilight Zone TV series but rarely does techno = "the
future" for me. maybe I dont exactly know what techno is. theres my problem!
:^) to me techno is more of a mood than a concept. techno is like a texture
or context.

(313) gear 4 sale

2004-07-02 Thread matrix313
Before I put it up for grabs on EBay I thought I'd try to find a good home
for it amongst the 313 list first:

I'm selling an ultra-rare EMU Proteus 2500 module in excellent/like new
condition (never taken out of the studio since coming out of it's box) with
currently updated software and all original manuals, and downloaded and
printed addendums for software updates, *AND* the Pure Phatt ROM installed
(the same sound set as the Planet Phatt/Mo' Phatt/MP7 workstation/and the
synth version whose name I cant think if at the moment). So you get The
Proteus 2500 with the Mo' Phatt module built in for the low price of $650
USF. The first buyer takes home this beautiful and amazing workstation and
gets a great deal.

from the EMU website:

Proteus 2500 - the most powerful, versatile and tweakable sound module ever
created for studio and stage.
New processor - three times faster than the Proteus 2000 for even tighter
MIDI timing
24-bit DAC's - deliver the most pristine sound quality ever
USB port - effortless uploading/downloading of sequences and updating OS
16 Track Sequencer - record in real-time, step and grid modes (Plays/Exports
SMF's)
Over 100 syncable synth parameters per preset - total control of your sounds
Over 30 programmable knobs and buttons - immediate, hands-on control over
all synth/mixing parameters and all of your external MIDI gear
128 Voice Polyphony - plays back your most massive sequences with ease
Expandable to 128 MB of internal sounds using any Proteus expansion ROM

Re: (313) Detroit and Geography

2004-05-25 Thread matrix313
Interesting theory. so, in listening to the new Kenny Larkin album, we
should take into consideration that he's been living in L.A. for the past 2
and a half years, and listen to it from a west coast point of view, to avoid
comparing it to whats commonly considered "Detroit Techno"? check out
Kenny's "The Narcissist" album, the worlds first "Hollywood Techno®"
project! Look at that, I've created a new sub-genre category! :^)

wasnt Malcolm X called "Detroit Red" in his younger days, even though he was
from Lansing, Michigan? "Lansing Red" somehow just doesnt carry the same
weight nor street appeal :^) but Lansing is a LONG way from Detroit.
must have something to do with the fact that Detroit is the only major
metropolis in the state of Michigan and the only city others around the
country (or world) know by name in this state.

exactly. Carl would not have to bootleg his own compilation. all licensing
contracts state how long the licensing agreement will be in effect and what
territories they cover. if you have your own label its best to maintain the
rights to press in your own territory. in most cases the agreements are in
effect for 60 months (five years) with the licensors rights and claims to
the recordings expiring after that time. I've even seen some contracts for
as little as 6 months :^)
after the agreed upon time the artist/owner (licensee) is free to do with
the master recordings what he or she wants in all territories (re-release,
remix, re-license to someone else, bury in a landfill in Arizona).
there are many other legal stipulations to licensing but I only mean to
address why there is no need for Carl to bootleg this compilation.

cool! and if you know the tune: the lyrics fit perfectly with "World
Destruction" by Time Zone a group which includes Bambaataa and Johnny Rotten
from the Sex Pistols.

Re: (313) radio playlist - 25/4/04

2004-04-26 Thread matrix313
I havent heard it yet but it's possible that it is the same Larkin track
that was played on the local jazz station here (in Detroit) back in about
1992. It's certainly the same title. I've always loved that track. maybe
he's updated it for the Peacefrog release? It has been the infamous missing
Kenny Larkin track for over a decade now :^)
