Redshape is playing berghein on saturday. This party on the Insel der Jugend, an island in the Spree, looks interesting but I have no idea what the music will be. http://reif-fuer-die-insel.de/ Henrik Schwarz is playing at a free park party in Ernst-Thälmann park behind the planetarium sunday afternoon. (313) Berlin : This Weekend
Hi Looks like I'm off to Berlin at the last moment this Friday through Monday. Anyone know of anything worth keeping an eye out for? Thanks Nick
(313) Berlin
I'll be in Berlin from next monday (3.12.) till the end of month (30.12.) (thanks to Slovenian Ministry of Culture, who gave me an apartment to use all month :) If anyone is interested to meet up, drop me a mail. I'll also have my equipment with me, so I would be happy to play somewhere while there. Jernej www.octex.si
(313) Berlin Nov 9-19th!?!
I will be visiting my son in Berlin in November -- arriving 9th, leaving 19th. Would love to see some of you American expats and Echt Berliners. I'm interested in events during that period too. Also -- any tips on decent, cheap accomodations would be greatly appreciated. My son's living in Kreuzberg, so near there would be perfect. Es ist mir gern zu besuchen der Grosster Stadt des Oontz Oontz!
(313) BERLIN - clubs vs bars
Hi just wondering if there is anything decent going on in berlin on the 16/17th wkd in berlin. I see phonique is playing at the arena on the sat (worth seeing?). I doubt i will be able convince my friends (who all seem to be getting married!) to be able to go clubbing so if someone can recommend a good bar with some decent djs that would be great, any good listing (whats going on in berlin) would also be great have good weeks cheers Paul

Berlin's history as a city over the last 100 years or so is the very definition of "transient" so Brophy's remarks seem a little misjudged I think. The most interesting aspect of it will be when Berghain/Panorama comes to an end - as I'm sure no doubt many residents have had enough of it - that's the Berlin way. For a city that thrives on reinventing itself consistently, it was remarkable that Tresor managed to hang on for 14 years, and is on the verge of reopening. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 14 December 2006 15:23 To: 313@Hyperreal.Org Subject: FW: (313) Berlin techno doc Feiern Well both you ("grandpa") and I (43) seem to like it there ;-) Though as much as I can handle leaving Berghain on a Sunday afternoon I would agree with him that someone who says people leaving the floor is like someone dying possibly doesn't mean it or hasn't experienced that. > -Original Message- > From: Aidan O'Doherty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: 14 December 2006 12:42 > To: Odeluga, Ken > Cc: Toby Frith; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: Re: (313) Berlin techno doc Feiern > > brophy is irish, we are used to our clubs closing just after > the witching hour. the excesses of berlin are a shock to the > system. maybe that's what has him troubled. > > his job is as a dance music journalist, so i suppose he has > to search for some meaning. > > as to middle age - i feel a bit out of place surrounded by > all the young fillies looking and pointing 'what's grandpa > doing here?'. in dublin, the age demographic in most clubs is > young - darn young For ball-by-ball coverage, instant match reports and analysis follow the Ashes at www.telegraph.co.uk/ashes This e-mail is from Telegraph Media Group Limited - 111 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 0DT registered in England under No 451593. OK I'm sure you didn't mean anyone to take this too seriously but just to speak up against stereo-types this is certainly not my experience of Berlin's inhabitants, the ones I've met are a VERY relaxed bunch, Berlin is a very bohemian city. It's usually us visitors who seem (well I do anyway) to have to large it to keep up with them: plenty seem to party the night and next day away on a few beers. And on the bike vibe possibly one of the most bizarre (and believe me there's competition) things about Berghain is the large number of bikes chained to the fence outside and the people who can manage to breeze home on these in the morning after a night in there. > -Original Message- > From: pauley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > 3 day benders aren't very techno though are they...i always > think of blake baxter and his mountain biking when i think of > 313 recreation. > > Probably being german though they need to get that f*cked up > just to relax..pity really...they'll all look middle aged at 25...

Well both you ("grandpa") and I (43) seem to like it there ;-) Though as much as I can handle leaving Berghain on a Sunday afternoon I would agree with him that someone who says people leaving the floor is like someone dying possibly doesn't mean it or hasn't experienced that. > -Original Message- > From: Aidan O'Doherty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: 14 December 2006 12:42 > To: Odeluga, Ken > Cc: Toby Frith; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: Re: (313) Berlin techno doc Feiern > > brophy is irish, we are used to our clubs closing just after > the witching hour. the excesses of berlin are a shock to the > system. maybe that's what has him troubled. > > his job is as a dance music journalist, so i suppose he has > to search for some meaning. > > as to middle age - i feel a bit out of place surrounded by > all the young fillies looking and pointing 'what's grandpa > doing here?'. in dublin, the age demographic in most clubs is > young - darn young

brophy is irish, we are used to our clubs closing just after the witching hour. the excesses of berlin are a shock to the system. maybe that's what has him troubled. his job is as a dance music journalist, so i suppose he has to search for some meaning. as to middle age - i feel a bit out of place surrounded by all the young fillies looking and pointing 'what's grandpa doing here?'. in dublin, the age demographic in most clubs is young - darn young. I'd love a vinyl copy of it at some point but can see that there prolly ain't loads of us who will run out and pick it up on wax. Anyway... It's all good stuff that I've heard. I haven't been to shops in the USA other than in Miami, but think I have been to many memorable shops in (central) Europe/UK. Fat Cat back in 1995 was the only one I think would rival Hardwax, both in terms of classic stock, unsual stuff to discover, and interesting/funny situations, like bumping into Dave Angel entering the shop with his spliff on, or introducing Basic Channel 01 to then Advent's Colin McBean... Reckon that Hardwax in 1999 had an almost complete catalog in stock for labels like UR, Metroplex, Dancemania, Strictly Rhythm, many Trax/DJ Int'l, etc... Clone in Rotterdam and Rub-a-Dub in Glasgow are/were very good and also carry loads of classics and (techno) labels catalogs. Also Piccadilly in Manchester is rather good, but they are more diverse and do not stock so much... On a somewhat lower level, than the list would go on&on like Rare Records in Eindhoven, Vinyl Junkies and Smallfish in London, Import in Paris, etc... > But only Hardwax is on a block (actually they are in a back One thing really cool about HW is the staircase leading to the shop full of grafitti and signatures from DJs/artits... Oh, and seeing the first snow flakes falling last year while some rather deep and dope stuff was on the shop soundsystem was fun as well (at least to a tropic guy like me). Hmm . . . Tweekin in San Francisco, Submerge/SID (of course), and three no longer in existence -- Ameba in SF (not the current Amoeba which is a good super-store), Exotique in Seattle and Sonic Groove in NYC. Other ones I have liked include Record Time in Detroit, 12-Inch Dance Records in DC (also out of business now), Eightball in NYC (also gone), BPM in SF, Flying and Vinyl Junkies in London, Gramophone in Chicago and and our own Platinum and Starbass (gone) here in Portland. There are quite a few well known house/techno stores that I have not been to (LA and Toronto in particular) so this is hardly a comprehensive list. But only Hardwax is on a block (actually they are in a back building accessible through a courtyard entrance) with about six cafes having a variety of good food and beer and a nice view of the canal :) fh - >On Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 04:34:19PM -0800, Fred Heutte wrote: >> a fine lunch at the cafe on the corner. Re: (313) Berlin this past weekend
I just got back to Portland from Berlin via Frankfurt. Ended up not making it to any clubs, actually. I tried to get in at Week-End around 1 am but got the "are you on the invite list" rejection. Which I thought was standard door-ese for "scram" but apparently was because the club was full. In any event that gave me a chance to wander through Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg at peak hour on a Saturday night. There is a kind of up-beat attitude in Berlin which I really enjoyed. I didn't want to go all the way out to Berghain and get a second rejection the same evening so that never came to pass. I was actually in Berlin for an ecology conference at the Freie Universitat so I didn't get to join in with the 313ers at Hardwax on Saturday but I did go on Monday and very glad I did, what a great store. Not deep in everything but deep in a lot of things I like. I ended up with an original-issue LP of U Roy version tracks, a live EU go go album I didn't have (and I thought I had all their stuff), an acid house thing from Detroit (!) around 1990 by "M$.V" called "Out of Your Mind" that Art Forest produced, the repress of Josh Wink's "Meditation Will Manifest" (the only record I've ever lost, about 8 years ago, one of the few Wink tracks I really like, and one I haven't been able to find), and, coincidentally enough, Henrik Schwarz's new "Leave My Head Alone Brain" which they were playing on the store system and is just mental-as-anything. Not only that but I had a beer and a fine lunch at the cafe on the corner. That seals it - Hardwax is one of maybe four or five top DJ stores I've ever been to :) fh
Re: (313) Berlin this past weekend
hey francis, all my peeps from ireland arrived, just about. i ran out of juice on my mobile, so could not contact you. friday night i spent in week12end with sasse playing. it was so-so as the place did not get very busy and the music was, well, weak - only a metro area cut stood out for me. very different from my last visit there. tried to get into panorama bar at about 3.30, but the (very scary looking) bouncers didn't like the cut of our jib. so, back to week12end (didn't think of watergate). saturday was spent in museums (pergamonmuseum my favourite), then a meal in borchardt, possible one of the best i've ever had. then in a cocktail bar called ambulance in north of the city with a cool dreadlocked dj playing chi house, disco, funk, crazy rhythm tracks. we left there at reasonable hour (1.0) to go to berghain. holy moly, what it says on wikipedia doesn't come close. the lighting and sound is brilliant - they must have spent a fortune on the place. the massive strobe lights almost induced an epileptic fit they were so powerful (and disorientating). the shaved-headed muscle marys were a sight to behold - as were the unfeasibly tall women, the valkyries. the music downstairs in the main berghain section was good. a dj wearing a red planet t-shirt (think it was don williams) played some great deep, dubby stuff, plus rng and that great hutton drive track on frantic flowers. upstairs was alright, the live sets of bruno pronsato (boring) and daze maxim (better) were a mixed bag. then a hamburg dj marc schneider took the reins and thats when i firmly encamped in panorama bar. the music was brilliant - this http://www.discogs.com/release/5996 was the highlight for me and summed up the night. had to leave at 8.0 in the morning, but it only seemed like the place was really getting going then. but i had my brain, liver and children to consider. i am actually glad that our licensing laws in ireland are so restrictive, because berlin nightlife is not condusive to good health. i saw a quote about berlin during the weimar republic: "the dance clubs were full and the patrons took as many drugs as they did lovers." glad to see nothing has changed - berlin, your dance partner is death. i haven't been in polar tv, but AFAIK it is not located in Alexanderplatz 5, but rather Heldestrasse (http://www.no-ufos.de/seiten/mapcontact.htm) . However, Weekend and Sternradio ARE in the same building. Its an pretty tall office building, where sternradio is located on the 1st floor and weekend is located in 17th floor (or smth) with nice view outside the windows... the ticket prices are not that high (7-10 eur), so it is a good idea to check both venues. I could have got this wrong but the theory I'm forming is that Polar TV & Sternradio are connected (night/venue) and are also at Alexanderplatz 5 but a on a different floor to Weekend? Or has Weekend replaced Sternradio and Polar TV is elsewhere now? I'm confused Gutted as I wasn't getting a line up for Weekend till today when it's revealed Henrik Schwarz who I want to see again so badly is playing on Thurs THE NIGHT BEFORE I GET THERE. You'd just stumble accross Theo Parrish and Carl C and Buzz Goree (who'll promote a truck at the next Love Parade btw; which lost dr Motte as director, something i didn't seem to have caught through 313) for another few tips; I enjoyed being at the Tacheles spot too (where A Guy Called Gerald has his own studio) it's something like a worn-out building full of alternative art/goa scenery, and graffiti rebellion - alas their terrace features Coca Cola parasols (which is really sod if you criticize and take a stand against majors through art at all of your four floors i guess) (read more about the site and the link with Gerald on http://super.tacheles.de/cms/kuenstler/abfrag2_detail.php?id=37) Next to Wee12kend Club (which featured Theo Parrish and Dixon saturday night and is located on the twelveth floor of a building overlooking the Alexanderplatz) I heard great comments on Watergate too, it's down Kreuzberg (Falckensteinstrasse). Their party listings impressed me anyway. I only found it strange and odd that two third of the Wee12kend club just didn't take too much notice of the music and its deejays - the place is a little ill-designed for that too as the speakers surround just a small part of the floor And close to Watergate, at the same street, you got a gallery called The Aquarium (a spin-off of its London's homeground) that features Jimmy Cauty's slightly subversive art for another few weeks from now. I passed by Tresor's former address too - the whole place's devasted by a massive building project which erases anything it has been - for which i would like to question www.3leipziger.de if they'd plan to eventually leave a marking spot for memorizing the club - in their basement or something. I think that's something Tresor would be appropriately memorized with, though i don't know if the Bauwert building experts really (would) take interest in that - i'd only hope so. Anyone who'd follow me for that at www.3leipziger.de? ;) Mario Simon Hindle schreef: > Yup, this weekend seems to be the bomb time to be in Berlin - a friend is > over there at the moment. yep, i'll be there too. btw: on saturday there's a redbullmusicacademy lecture with theo (and dixon, i suppose) at week-end club (alexanderplatz 5) from 17 to 20 h before the party. the rhythm&sound party at panoramabar (if the weather's good in the garden) on sunday starts at 12h noon, feat. ric villalobos, tikiman, soundhack and dj pete. a little bird told me that the "very special guest from detroit" will be CC! see you there, c* Simon Hindle schrieb: Yup, this weekend seems to be the bomb time to be in Berlin - a friend is over there at the moment. Hi there list. Any interesting events in Berlin from next thursday (17th) to sunday (20th) Would be great to check some Monolake gig, so if he is playing anywhere, even from his iPod, let me know... Oh and also Daniel Wang... Berghain on saturday will have Michael Mayer + Marcel from HW and Kerri CHandler in the bar. Sounds like a hit. Watergate will have Sebo K., Andre Henke (Baambi), Fortsch and Fortyounce (what kind of music these guys play?) on friday. Any good? What about Maria (will Dan Curtin be DJing there on saturday?)?? What else Also got the record shops addresses and markets that Ramon and Brian gave us a few months ago. Any changes or additions to those??? (313) Berlin record shops
Hello list, I have just managed to wrangle a trip to Berlin out of the company. I am going to have the afternoon/evening of the 7th of September to hang around, see tings and hopefully buy a sh!tload of records. Can anyone advise me where to go? I will be at the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds so I will need something relatively local if possible. Looking forward to some tips! Re: (313) Berlin
hi! just returned home from work... 1) the best flead market is at boxhagener platz in friedrichshain - the area t.raumschmiere lives - and mostly young people hang around - 99% locals - what has a positive effect on the price of the records. the collection at strasse des 17. juni is huge - but this is a pure tourists flea market. records starting at 10 euros if you find some cheap ones :-) 2) all the shops are open on saturday - not on sunday the opening hours of hardwax on saturday are from 12am to ? - don't know exactly about closing time cause when the weather is nice i'm usually sitting on the opposite of the river at the Ankerklause for a nice cup of coffee at 10am - waiting for hardwax to open... can't add anything to the list brian provided - only the info that "Platten Pedro" is a must see... this shop rocks. he has besides of 10 thounsands of lps 180 thousand singles in his shop. you can't see any walls in there - only records... 3) ? if you wanna buy records for 1 euro the best choice will be flea markets. another nice one is at the end of zossener str. - near spacehall record shop - if you think about looking for the minimux-maximum 4 lp set - check out spacehall. got mine for 49euros and i had the choice between gsa version and international version. they have most stuff hardwax has but they are little more expensive - about 1 euro per record. great selection of minimal stuff and cds. 4) watergate is still great - went there on saturday to see moodyman and the place was still rocking when i left at 6.30am. my personal favourite is berghain atm. if you wanna sleep for an hour or so - they even have darkrooms :-) it's the best location - not just because of the fantastic architecture. don't bring your camera. they don't wanna have any pictures taken - so the security will do a proper search - they even have a female one for the girls. had to leave my camera at the counter. the few girls that go there on a saturday night are a) with some gay male friends or b) because they know that it's safe to go there being a woman that just wants to party instead of having to scare away the horny guys all the time. berghain is naturally a good place to listen to house music although they allways have djs coming from other styles - like monolake few weeks ago - laurent garnier last weekend and (excerpt from my weblog): coming up next week (friday) @ panoramabar: Playhouse pres.: Warhol's unfinished symphony - with: Ricardo Villalobos / Daniel Bell / Heiko MSO / Meat saturday?... maybe Maria: www.clubmaria.de or WMF www.wmfclub.de or berghain/panoramabar www.berghain.de or watergate www.water-gate.de have fun! roman/berlin/germany --- energylog - read the news - www.energylab.de - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, June 13, 2005 3:05 PM Subject: re: (313) Berlin BERLIN QUIZ> winner gets illustrious prize. Re: (313) Berlin
Q4) Does I-F only play Friday nights in berlin? where should I go saturday night - anything good? is watergate still ok? watergate is ok, but my berliner friends only go to ostgut/panorama bar now and swear by it. besides, daniel bell is playing there next weekend. i've also been told the girls are very friendly there ;)
(313) Berlin
Morning 313. My head hurts. Anyway. In a stroke of good fortune, I might have blagged a one night trip to Berlin this weekend. I have been to berlin, but I was drunk the moment i stepped off the plane, to the moment I got back on it, so that wasn't much use. However, this is MISSION:RARE PIECE so I intend to do nothing but look for records. Oh, maybe I'll squeeze in a beer or two if time allows too. Just wondered if any berlin list members knew the answers to the following Q's. BERLIN QUIZ> winner gets illustrious prize. Q1) Are the fleamarkets on Saturday as well as Sunday? Any in particular that are best for records? Q2) Is it true all the shops are shut saturday? I managed to go to hardwax saturday, but need to know if all the big second hand shops open saturday? also, what about sunday? Q3) I have a list of about 20 record shops. any in particular that are best for 2nd hand? Looking for rare MAXI's of any description - you know, the sort of shops that have massive piles of records for 1 euro. Not interested in getting any techno, I'm strictly on the "gotta pick up some pieces cheap, need to sell some etc vibe". So, weird pop/rock/electronic disco etc etc etc etc . Q4) Does I-F only play Friday nights in berlin? where should I go saturday night - anything good? is watergate still ok? thanks in advance. alec _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. (313) berlin-detroit video
hey everyone, for the experimental documentary class that i took this semester my classmate Maria Mayer and i decided to make a video about detroit and berlin. so in october she went to berlin for an extended weekend, and i went home to michigan to collect video. what we have at this point is a 20 minute movie combining that footage. it includes: music by pole and jeff mills interior shots of the packard plant and other abandoned structures in detroit some real purty landscape/cityscape shots of berlin found footage from a VHS tape salvaged from the floor of the packard plant and more! anyways, if you're looking for something to watch, check out the low quality web version here: http://synthetictom.com/video/production/berlindetroit.mov also, any feedback/criticism is most welcome and appreciated. thanks a lot tom -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.synthetictom.com

Later on he'll be at "tresor" with kevin s., tyree c. and others. Sweet Magda will be doing her set there on the 9th - friday night. And... richie h. is in town as well - on the 10th at "watergate".
