Yes, this is the Alter Ego mix (Klang 62). It's still for sale on
http://www.technovinyl.de . Not sure if they ship outside Europe though.

I am also very curious to know the name of the first track in that mix.
Anyone?

I haven't listened to the mix yet, but recently there was a remix of this
song on a limited Klang release by Alter Ego. Very much a new track, but
produced to kinda sound old...

He had four new sliders added to his mixing bored. He has a stereo pair of
channels that are labels "sucks" and another stereo pair that are labels
"rocks".

If he wants a track to suck, he turns all the "Sucks" sliders up.
If he wants a track to rock, he turns all the "Rocks" sliders up.

Hawtin finally realized that he actually had nothing to do with the
creation

of his music, it was just his gear doing all the work. Besides, it is not a
big deal because he doesn't even make real music in the first place.

If you ever get disenchanted with Hawtin, just go back to the Dimension
Intrusion (LP). I personally think he's an asset. Also it seems he's
enlightened & humble enough to know he's still got stuff to learn ... plus
unlike many, he embraces change. Isn't that what this music's largely about?

Isnt that in essense the definition of 'dance' music - its the gear doing
all the work, making the music
the art is knowing how to work the gear
i rememebr the famous/fabulous clip in the CH4 History of House

"And he replied, 'I don't know"
"And so I said 'Just keep on doing it!'

in using final scratch more and more, richie has started re-editing,
re-mixing, re-interpreting tracks since he can do so and play them
out almost instantly. he's able to experiment with tracks, and
customize them to a mood, venue, whatever. in doing so, he got the
 idea of going (conceptually speaking) deeper 'into' the tracks;
getting nearer and nearer to the basic elements of each track and
what made it work one way or another. hence, closer to the edit.
final scratch was just an influence on the album, a way of thinking
about the music... so that's what it means.

he said that was probably the best time he's ever had playing in SF.
his set the following night in LA was quite similar.. came on,
floored it for a while, backed off and played some de9:ce tracks, and
then wound up banging it out again - but more funky, like you said.
he snuck in that You Spin Me Round remix, as well as a rework of
Coffee Pot, which kept a little humor and a lot of screaming fans
going for it from beginning to end. they gave him an encore and damn
i wish i knew what that track was!

(but not the drumcode-stiff type bangin', more inna funky vein),
and then almost two hours of beautiful, deep, minimal, bliss. One of
the most emotional sets I've seen him play...There was actual melody!
And no 909 stupidity. I really felt like he's started trying to take
people on a journey again. I thanked him for it afterwards and he said
that he was really into it that night as well.

Maybe the final scratch thing has had a positive effect on his
programming...it was definitely reminding me of the richie of old...

in using final scratch more and more, richie has started re-editing,
re-mixing, re-interpreting tracks since he can do so and play them
out almost instantly. he's able to experiment with tracks, and
customize them to a mood, venue, whatever. in doing so, he got the
idea of going (conceptually speaking) deeper 'into' the tracks;
getting nearer and nearer to the basic elements of each track and
what made it work one way or another. hence, closer to the edit.
final scratch was just an influence on the album, a way of thinking
about the music... so that's what it means.

Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin -> NY Times

2001-11-05 Thread M. Todd Smith
I'm sure someone will think this is a great article, but with lines like :
___

One song, "Kladfvgbung Micshk," uses a prepared piano for both the rhythm
and the melody, and this suggestion - that a rhythm instrument can have a
melodic value, and vice versa - creates a sense of ambiguity that hovers
over the whole album: we're often not quite sure whether we're hearing a
beat or a tone.
___

WTF! Of course a rhythm instrument can have a melodic value, considering
the writer is paying close attention to RDJ's use of the piano, he/she
should at least know something about the piano, or maybe the guitar, bass,
drums, etc. All rhythm instruments have tones, a beat IS a tone.

I would really like to know what Final Scratch had to do with DE9 2, besides
being an influence on it (whatever that means). The best part of the
article is definitely: (the author is speaking of Hawtin's use of a Phillipe
Cam record)
___
It's a shame there aren't more surprises like that. Too much of "Closer to
the Edit" rushes by without making much of an impression; its amalgamated
thump never shows any signs of letting up.

___

Glad someone is paying attention.

Cheers

maybe im a little bit out of time, but about what are you talking. What new
cd.

Mixed reviews is the consensus. I personally thought musically, the cd
was pretty cool and funky. I've said before that it sounded Studio
One-ish. This series is all about the gear and techniques that goes into
the production of these mixes, not necessarily the music itself,
although some people expected way too much from Richie musically, hence
the mixed reviews.

Makes for nice background music imho.
Flip it on repeat and your set.

Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in
open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection.
I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was
the
term a friend used.)
Hawtin played a 6 hour set. To be honest I found it quite boring. I've
enjoyed
previous sets from him but this just seemed to be one minimal track blended
smoothly into another minimal track. There seemed to be a lack of variety,
nothing that really stood out.
Where was the madness? Where was the darkness? How about some deck skills?
What
about the funk? It was all too serious (cold & clinical.) I think Professor
Hawtin needs to spend less time in the studio and maybe even go out for a
dance
one night to remember what it's like to be the other side of the DJ booth.
I'm going to hear him again at Atomic Jam alongside Luke Slater this month
so
he's got another chance to impress, I just hope he can prove me wrong.

Would you rather he soudned the same every time you saw him? That sounds like
it's a lot more boring than one night that didn't quite catch your fancy. I'd
write that night up to one that you weren't quite in the mood for.

I want djs and producers to experiment, to reinvent themselves, to explore. How
sad it would be if Richie never moved beyond Cybersonic or if Kevin still was
only Inner City, etc...

Re: [313] Hawtin & Magda

2001-10-03 Thread Fixer

Would you rather he soudned the same every time you saw him? That sounds like
it's a lot more boring than one night that didn't quite catch your fancy. I'd
write that night up to one that you weren't quite in the mood for.

I want djs and producers to experiment, to reinvent themselves, to explore. How
sad it would be if Richie never moved beyond Cybersonic or if Kevin still was
only Inner City, etc...

I also just recently got Closer to the Edit and was very unimpressed. I
didn't think it was even as good as "Decks, EFX...", much less a step past
that.

The first time I saw Richie spin was in 93 or so in Detroit. The last time
he impressed me spinning was at Sickness in 96 (or 97???). Since he's
started doing the Decks EFX & 909 thing every time I see him it seems like
he's basically just playing the same set over and over. I'm sure that the
same is now true with the Closer to the Edit/Final Scratch set.

I saw Hawtin @ The End around November 2000 and was blown away by him, but
then at Sonar in June he was dismal, being rather dull and without variety.
I admire his methodology and approach, but I feel sometimes that the minimal
approach he uses might be better off as part of a live act rather than just
DJing. Although I'll probably be shouted down, in the UK especially I feel
that live acts are usually given much more time by a crowd if they
experiment rather than just Djing to a club atmosphere where people are
likely to get bored if they hear repitition.

I'd love to see a lot more "micro-house" (see The Wire a few months back)
acts over here in the UK but I just can't see them fitting into the music
policy of club promoters over here.

November was the first time I heard Hawtin at The End and I too enjoyed it a lot
more than last week. I was also at Sonar and that was better than last week! As
daweed mentioned tho it's probably just due to his promoting DE9 but the old
Richie was a lot more interesting, varied & fun! That set in November was pure
madness from what I remember.

Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection. I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was the
term a friend used.)
Hawtin played a 6 hour set. To be honest I found it quite boring. I've enjoyed
previous sets from him but this just seemed to be one minimal track blended
smoothly into another minimal track. There seemed to be a lack of variety,
nothing that really stood out.
Where was the madness? Where was the darkness? How about some deck skills? What
about the funk? It was all too serious (cold & clinical.) I think Professor
Hawtin needs to spend less time in the studio and maybe even go out for a dance
one night to remember what it's like to be the other side of the DJ booth.
I'm going to hear him again at Atomic Jam alongside Luke Slater this month so
he's got another chance to impress, I just hope he can prove me wrong.

Hi there,
haven't posted to the list for quite some time as I've had very little
to say about Ritchie Hawtin

That's a cue for a Richie debate if ever I heard one : )

I caught both Magda & Hawtin's set's at The End last w/e. I went in open-minded
as I'd never heard Magda before and had only heard Hawtin about 4 times
previously.
After all the debate about weather or not Magda can DJ I found that she is
quite good at mixing (no mistakes) but I didn't really enjoy her selection. I
didn't know any of the tracks but they seemed to be average to me ("Dry" was the
term a friend used.)

Must concur.

The I-F event was very very good. Enjoyed the sets from both I-F and ulysses
and stayed till the very end.

Great event. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks.

2001-07-09 Thread alan . ocairbre2
I went to the boat party last night and was disappointed with Richie Hawtin.
I hadn't heard him dj in a few years and I felt that what he was playing
last night really bored me. There seemed to be little variation in the music;
it almost sounded as if he was playing the same record all night - all
percussion
and no melody. There was one highlight for me however - Kraftwerk's Tour
de France. Everyone else at the party seemed to like it though, as the
atmosphere was great.
Went to see I-F on Saturday night. I presumed he was doing a live PA but
he was djing. It was excellent. The guy who played before him was also
very impressive.

just a thought...but does he clone himself? My
question would be, b/t touring the world, keeping up
with the label and other business ventures etc.,when
does he have time to sit down in the studio and do
this?

[313] Hawtin interview

2001-07-06 Thread wes
We have a Hawtin/Acquaviva double bill happening here in Toronto this
weekend. I thought I'd post some quotes from an interview Richie did with Ben
Rayner of The Toronto Star regarding his new project, Closer to the Edit, due
for September release. He states:

"Whereas the first Decks EFX album was a live mix that had been remanipulated
and had some studio post-production on it, this is a complete studio album
[...] This is not a live mix CD, that's for sure. There are over 75 tracks on
the album. I started the album by taking 150 records and re-sampling everything
down to small, one- to four-bar loops. So there isn't anything on there greater
than four bars long. And out of that information--out of what I'm kind of
referring to as a jigsaw puzzle--I started to build up and recreate this
hour-long piece of music...The records that I've used have just become pieces.
I've taken the bits, the basslines, the kicks, the ideas that were represented
in these records and just filtered them down to the pieces that I felt were
most important. [...] It's interesting. It's slower than the first one, it's
more minimal in some places, it's weirder in some places and it's funkier in
some places, but it's different. It's definitely a progression. It's Decks EFX
two years later. I'm really happy with it."

"It gave me a lot of ideas and possibilities for my next album, and I know from
my past experience and where I go and how I do things that it'll probably start
to get a bit weirder again [...] I think it's time to get back to something a
little more obscure."

I've heard a mix called "Live at Chemistry" .
It was of the medium-spicy side, but lemme tell you, in the middle of that

It could have been a 101, but dude, it sounded very acidic, and very live.
You should check it out, the problem is that I don't know where my buddy
got

nothing but hard loops and stuff like that i became curious.
is there another side of Hawtin wich i haven't heard yet? Let me know!
Thanks a lot!

Re: [313] Hawtin in NYC

2001-02-04 Thread TekHitsHarder
Lara

I did witness Richies complete domination of the Twilo crowd on Friday. As
usual the amazing "Phazon" sound system was in full effect, and I could not
believe how many people were feeling his vibe. I closed out the place around
7:30. Its a shame you didnt stay until the end. For the last hour he
completely brought his whole set down with the most amazing funky, jazziest
shit I have ever heard. He even dropped a few disco tracks which just amazed
everyone. At the end of his set, the entire crowd(about 300), were screaming,
and chanting. Richie rose above the decks and extended his pointer finger,
w/o saying a word. 1 last track was what he had to offer. I have never heard
a track more uplifting, funky, and hard all at the same time in my life. And
by the way the crowd danced to it, I think they all felt the same way. After
his last track...a single sole began to stomp his feet. Within seconds, the
entire crowd was following his lead. It sounded like an army of troops
marching into battle. He couldnt do a thing about it---he clapped for us, b/c
he knew we appreciated his work. After his set i walked up to him and asked
"what was that last track?" He laughed..smiled, and said "its something I
found on an old tape from about 5 years ago--I only play it on amazing
nights." I smiled..shook his hand, and walked away.

Every time I see Richie he amazes me more and more. I know some of you dont
like his sets, and maybe its b/c he "bangs" out most of the night. I don't
know about Detroit..but in NYC there is something special when he comes
around. Everyone is friendly, even your typical "clubber.". At peak early
morning hours, there is a feeling in the air, a sense of joy and new life. I
brought a friend of mine who is a complete old school raver. Loves his
breaks, loves his trance...and hasnt been to a club in years. I told him to
come out and experience it for himself before he passed judgement on it. He
walked out of the club speachless. He couldn't believe the vibe, the way
everyone knew how to dance, and most of all, the music. He could not believe
that a Dj could move the crowd the way Richie did. Ive said it once, and I'll
say it again. IMO (so I dont get reamed), Richie is by far the most amazing
Dj around. I would choose to see him over any other Dj. He makes the people
movehe makes the people screamand damnit..he makes the people
believe.

Mike D.

ps...Lara..are u in NYC?

It's probably from the X-Mix 3 CD that was released in
the early 90's. Some of the tracks are by Sysex,
Speedy J, Laurent Garnier, and Plastikman. The first
42 minutes or so are mixed by John Acquaviva and the
next 30 minutes are mixed by Rich Hawtin.

Is this the Tomorrow release we are talking about? And it definitely isn't
Bicknell and Sherri? Nick, what you reckon?

Regardless though, I still think it is one of Mills' poorest releases,
although I fully appreciate that it serves as an extra step toward his next
credible piece.

If it's not any of the tracks already suggested then I reckon it's a 12" on
Eevolute by 2001. Not sure of the title, but perhaps someone else could be
more specific (Stefan?). If it's the one I'm thinking of, it has a long
breakdown with just some closed hats on the beat and a kinda funky squeaking
noise, then this really dark stab cuts in and the track kicks off (does this
sound familiar, or am I completely off base!?). The same track's also
featured on Claude Young's 'DJ Friendship' mix CD (Japan only) - mixed with
an Advent tune I think.

Really nice guy, very, very interesting to talk and listen to, great ideas
about art and techno, etc, love all of his records and production, but as a
DJ? I think with Hawtin you either think he's great or you wonder what the
big deal is and that is the only fair way to put it.

Hawtin was saying in March that he had two requests to play NYE in

fantastic (and actually better) rumours of late but I think this may have
some weight to it.

RE: (313) hawtin in perth

2000-03-06 Thread Jason Birchmeier
Riots aren't common but drama is.

Just look at Ritchie's track record: his Kompressed party got totally busted
before it even happened with police following him and his crew around for
days; his performance in Louisville never happened since the police decided
to crash the party; and in Chicago I got to firsthand witness some Rodney
King-style beatdowns with police trying to bring order to a mass of tripping
kids who were kept out in the cold for hours.

Incidents like these have made me appreciate commercial venues such as Motor
and Science despite their commercial nature strictly due to their stability.
But now that the Detroit press has made an effort to expose them as drug
havens, looks like not even the legal clubs are safe from uncalled for
drama.

The latest stop in the hawtin tour was last night here in perth, along
with a whole bunch of other people I'm not interested in (aheh... like
Adam Freeland).

Man, it f*ckin rocked... absolutely no mercy from hawtin, just
continuously funky records, mostly hard stuff, along with the
occasional electro, german house (Brinkmann!), and 909 workout.
The crowd loved it. Sweaty as hell in there, too. I finally heard the
sandwiches track as well ("I know you wanna do it"). :)

I'm glad there weren't any major hassles like riots and such stuff...
is that common in the US What's the story?
