The strike was a one-day wildcat on Wednesday designed to get
the City Council's attention to the urgent issue of safety for
drivers and passengers.

The Council got the message and passed the ordinance yesterday:

Also as of today Michigan has the highest gas prices in the

And the Greektown casino main computer crashed today:

Re: (313) since I won't be at DEMF

2007-05-25 Thread Adam Smith

I had the cab ride of my life in Detroit during the DEMF one year, I
will never forget it and I am just glad that I was with friends to
prove that it actually happened.

After standing in line for well over an hour trying to get into the
Transmat after-party we gave up and opted to go to another party
somewhere on the outskirts of town, I believe Stacey Pullen and Alton
Miller were to play. We hailed a cab and told the guy where we wanted
to go. He looked back at us and said, "there ain't no f'n way I'm
takin two white boys out there at this time of the night!"

Based on his recommendation we decided to call it a night. On our way
back to the hotel, the cab driver started telling us a story about how
he and his buddy had this scheme once where they would meet up with
some ladies (I'll use ladies in lieu of his preferred word), take them
out, get them smashed, then go to the hotel. Well apparently he and
his buddy liked to shave their heads and switch it up in the middle of
the night for their unsuspecting ladies. It seems that if the ladies
were smashed enough, and the lights were low enough, this was an
excellent way to try all offerings at the buffet.

Well, as he was wrapping up his very animated story, this car comes
out of nowhere driving insanely fast, passing us like we were sitting
still. "Oh sh#t!" our cab driver exclaims, "it's a f$ckin police
chase." And it was, a police car comes flying by us immediately after
the first car. So the cab driver speeds up to keep up with the action.
The police car catches up with the first car and pulls it over
quickly, cops get out, etc...our wise cab driver knowingly states
about the car that got busted, "where the f$ck he gonna go in this
city?" as we pass by the scene.

After we pass that scene, we come to a red light and pull up next to
this Lexus SUV that has a serious entertainment system set up inside
his vehicle. Our Dalai Lama like- cab driver, in his infinite wisdom,
observes, "now how a motherf$cker gonna have 5 TV's and no ladies
(using my alternate word here again)?" We pondered his rhetorical
question.

At that point, we finally made it to our hotel, where we paid and had
to say goodbye to our cab driver. I had to ask my buddies if that
really just happened. It did.

many of the afterparties are within walking distance of hart plaza and most

there are indeed buses and taxis avaiable downtown by hart plaza, but cabs

You really must have a car to get around in Detroit, or know someone
with a car, you may be pretty screwed. And this does cause drunk
driving - in my own case, I'm quite embarrased about driving to the
burbs after the UR cabaret party (4 years ago?). But it's not like I
could live my car there. I can't believe I didn't get pulled over!

Anyone who might venture away from downtown, try to make friends with
someone from the D who has a car. As a backup, I would suggest you get
the number of a cab company that will pick you up, and make sure you
have access to a cell phone. Even downtown I've been stranded with no
cab in sight for over two hours. But you can usually get picked up,
though it may take up to an hour.

The buses also don't run at night... and the bus drivers did indeed
walk out Wednesday, so the situation is very shaky. Be careful riding
the buses: the bus drivers walked out, because they want cops to ride
the buses, because driving them has become so dangerous. According to
yahoo news: "Gaffney said drivers are regularly assaulted physically
and verbally abused aboard the buses. One driver was badly beaten on
Tuesday evening by a passenger, he added."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070523/us_nm/detroit_buses_dc

I can vouch for the danger of the buses: I lived downtown (on
Woodward) for a very short time once, and got a short term job at the
Detroit Zoo. I used the bus to get there. I saw a guy get in the bus
driver's face and threaten to shoot him. Luckily some helpful bus
riders managed to grab the guy and threw him out the door.

I'd say it's pretty bad everywhere in the states but in Baltimore it's worse
than most places I've been. You leave downtown on a Friday night and it
seems like more than half the drivers on the road are over the limit. Cops
generally have better things to do than worry about drunk driving in
Baltimore. It ain't good but this if bound to happen when the only way to
get around is by car.

Things happen, but no more so than any other city. Here in Detroit we
struggle with a negative image, some self-induced, some media driven, but
all in all only techno goers seem to appreciate the full spectrum that
Detroit can offer on the underground side.

Yes there is, regardless of what one thinks a lot is. I once worked for
the DUI office here in Pittsburgh (population including surrounding
counties a little over a million) and the year end fiscal report would
blow your mind. It's a multimillion dollar business, and I mean
BUSINE$$! The recent lowering of the acceptable BAC, has just added more
money to the coffers.

But I digress, I'm really looking forward to this weekend and I'm sure
I'll see many of the attendees on this list at some point.

RE: (313) since I won't be at DEMF

2007-05-25 Thread John Sokolowski

Is there a lot of drink driving in the US?

You have to be really careful.

Here is a true Detroit story about my old neighbor: he got way too drunk one
night and tried to drive home alone. He passed out in his car while driving
at a red light. He woke up in the middle of the street with no car, no
wallet, and no shoes.

He had to knock on a bunch of random doors in the hood during the middle of
the night to get home. Adventually, he found someone to call his mom for
him, but she wouldn't let him in her house.

We still laugh about this today. ;)

Re: (313) since I won't be at DEMF

2007-05-25 Thread Roberto Ty
I've never heard of a limit here. I mean that's up to the discretion of the
bartender. If he thinks you're belligerent, he'll probably cut you off for
the night.

There will be after parties and clubs within walking distance from the
festival. I'm not sure what the status of taxis are with the strike, but I'm
sure the hotel concierge will be able to help there. This is a memorial day
(holiday) weekend, so I'd assume the city has public transportation
available. To what capacity I'm not sure.

I was shocked to hear about hotel prices from friends coming in. I was
shocked a lot were already booked. In years past, I've been able to get a
room closer to the festival date, so I'm hoping this is a sign that this
year really is going to be one big party. Paxhau seems to be doing a good
job. On the news the other day they mentioned they improved the whole
lighting setup and promised it to be spectacular.

It's all a matter of blood alcohol content. The bars in Detroit stop
serving alcohol at 2 so if you dance until 5 -- IF you can dance until
5 -- you're probably OK to drive.

LOL - I first read this as "If you don't feel your hearing, move."

I guess that's always good advice too. Careful with those decibels people.

Hey what about this Kent?

Bringing in food from outside isn't permitted?

(Not that I'm going or anything, ahem...)

I'm wishing all who attend a great festival, and offering some advice.

1. If you go to an afterparty and you're not parked right under a
streetlight on Woodward, park in a lot with an attendant. Trust me on
this.

2. Go to Submerge, and introduce yourself. Introduce yourself to
other shoppers. Watch out for Europeans on their first trip to Detroit
-- they're prone to swoon. Go upstairs to the Museum. Give T Linder
some crap if he's hanging around.

3. Eat breakfast at the Clique, at the Shorecrest, a few blocks south
of the Ren Cen.

4. If there's one night that none of the afterparties thrill you, hang
at the hotel and chill. This will keep you from being one of the
walking dead by Monday afternoon.

5. The most important night to hit an afterparty is Monday. Otherwise,
leaving the gates at Hart Plaza is so sad.

6. Figure you're going to spend $50 on water at the festival and stop
worrying about it. Filling an empty bottle in the bathrooms feels
really gross.

7. Don't bring in contraband, the Detroit cops are chill until they
aint and then they are your worst nightmare.

8. OTOH make a big bag of healthy treats, send in a friend, and pitch
the bag over the fence away from the gate and any security.

9. If you don't feel what you're hearing, move. It's always the case
that someone you never heard of is going to blow you away.
