Any reports on Mills, May & Melbourne Symphony

2016-01-31 Thread edward thompson
Hi guys,
Yeah i flew down to the Melbourne gig with Mills and May…. It rocked. Up in my
top 5 gigs of all time.
Mills was solid and he controlled the Orchestra.
With May the Orchestra was more just playing his track. So it didn’t seem as if
he has the same control as Mills did. Either way Mays section was REALLY good….
All his stuff worked really well. Icon was killer…. In fact i won’t start
listing tracks as they all worked. He had 2 opera singers chiming in on a few
tracks and it worked really well.
Crows was into it and up and dancing for the majority.
Sound wasn’t too loud but was solid.
Amazon, Icon and the strings of the strings of life were probably my highlights.
The Bells seemed a little dull in comparison to last time i heard it with Mills
in Melbourne a few years back.
Anyway - yeah…. Top 5 for me
:)

Re: Any reports on Mills, May & Melbourne Symphony?

2016-01-31 Thread Peter Bense
I'm glad to hear someone else say this. I know that these orchestras are
trying to attract different audiences and all, but it really is not very
fitting. In the "performances" of this sort I've seen (a recent Carl Craig
one comes to mind) button pushing looks really stupid next to bowed
strings and woodwinds. One is a discipline that takes a decade to master.

Derrick didn't even play the piano on his most famous tune. Think about
that for the second. They are really not comparable, and don't even belong
on the same stage.

Thanks all so far and hope to hear more. Would've loved to be there myself and
experience it first hand.

Not long ago really enjoyed Jeff's Exhibitionist 2 live show in Tokyo with G.
Mitchell on keys accompanied Japanese lady on Moog and J guy on Bass guitar.
No I Feel Love live version played ;-)

2016-01-31 Thread Jimmy
My brother and his friends all went (I no longer live there).

They all said it was amazing and that Derrick was the best and his music suited
it the most.

They came out and did a planned encore of a new track that was very awesome
also.

The amphitheater they played at is such a good venue too. Can't imagine it was
anything but great.

Interesting - I'd be curious as to how that worked out as well.
On another note, I'll be presenting a radio special this Friday on the
work or Matt Cogger, who passed away when I wasn't looking. For 313
content, he interned with Derrick May at Transmat, and baby-sat the
label while Derrick was cutting a DJ swath through Europe. He has
significant releases on Irdial. Buzz, and New Electronica, These days,
significant artists and individuals are slipping away in droves - I
don't think I really need to name all the names. Most distressing are
the ones who slip away unbeknownst, like Laura Gavoor, who showed me
much kindness and hospitality when I trekked to Detroit in '95 for the
10th anniversary Metroplex do.
I never got to talk all that much to Matt. I did a radio special
feature in '97 on Lee Purkis, Cogger, and Luke Slater. I got to talk to
Luke and Lee at length, but Matt was working in a tony drinking
establishment in London at the time, so our hours mere pretty much
disjoint - I did manage to wake him up, which wasn't appreciated. I
found out about his demise recently quite by accident when I was
researching his Irdial Cosmat DJ set.

The special will be on Friday, Feb 5, 2016 at 10PM-2A Pacific time
(GMT-8) on KFJC-FM, 89.7 (www.kfjc.org). Broadcasts are streamed live
and archived for 2 weeks at kfjc.org.
