Oh don't get me wrong, the Tenori-on is awesome machine (and looks
really cool to) but it just didn't fit into my image of a MM live
kinda thing ;-) But then again i am just a stubborn dutch country
guy ;-) I really am waiting to see one pop-up in a store so i can play
around with because i am not sure if it will fit into my workflow but
maybe i just want one because of all the flashy lights on those
things ;-)

So I stayed in london wishing I'd made it. But I did manage to catch Rob Hood
at Fabric (though it was touch and go as I again failed to pass whatever
coolness check the door idiots have, the first time through the guy told me I
had been drinking too much, a real laugh since the last drink I had was a beer
after the Gang of Four/Tom Tom Club gig at the Royal Festival Hall the night
before. Gang of Four were just great by the way.

Anyway I eventually managed to blag my way in and saw most of Rob's set, which
was mostly straight up DJing and not much with the advertised 909/effects. He
played strong and hard, I don't know what most of the tracks are though I
recognized a few.

Marco Carolla was eh-ok and my old pal Doc Martin was lighting it up pretty
nicely in the small room. So it ended up being a pretty good night after all.

He was definitely using a Tenori-On...as supplied by us. I had
several conversations with Mike about its' possibilities and what he
might do with it. Really glad to see it turning up at the X-102 gig -
it's a deep little box- built in sounds are not to every one's taste
but that's what the MIDi out is for :)

I have to dismiss, i'm not using Ableton. And err, just to put things into
perspective before any kind of SW/HW discussion comes up. I absolutely
worship X-102 for the greatness, the music and everything. Big up. I was
just merely talking about the fact that they both looked absolutely absent
on those vids. Aight?

RE: (313) X-102 clips

2008-06-24 Thread james . hurlbut
As far as I could see, there were no laptops involved in the
performance. Jeff was on 4 cdjs, a couple of mixing consoles and what
looked like a small silver 909 styled box. Mike was on a newish Korg,
some other keyboard, and was using a Tenori-on for sequencing on some
tracks.

They didnt start until around 3:15 and I guess about 10 minutes into
the set they had to stop and draw the curtains back due to technical
difficulties. I got there right when they started again and yes, it
was pure sonic warfare :) Sure, there were alot of slips and off beat
moments throughout like any improv style jam. But when it came
together the thickness and texture of the sound was fantastic.

The venue is a gigantic warehouse with multi-point sound, massive
laser and light rigs and three giant screens so I think the majority
of the crowd couldnt even see the stage or any potential hands in the
air theatrics :) . That is probably why they don't focus much on the
stage presence. The atmosphere is more of what I have seen at raves
than at clubs, with a focus on anonymous performance, except of course
for the big blowup shots of mike and jeff looking earnestly at the
machines in their button down shirts.

Here are a few more clips from the performance. You can see Jeff and
Mike working the machines from the video screens on some of these.
Also, I uploaded snippets of an interview done with Jeff earlier on
Saturday at Sonar by Day.
