  i believe the book you're referring to is, "history of house"[sanctuary
publishing ltd.].  it's basically a bunch of early articles from mags like
music technology and the mix.  it's a pretty good read... lots of gear-talk.

there is a cool book i saw once (from about 1990) with interviews with a
very young kevin saunderson and derrick may.. it had a lot of info in there
about the gear they used.  but anyway, i lost the name of it.. if anyone
knows??  the microKorg I use now has some nice sounds..

P5 sounds to me like that crunchy Prescription synth sound. You know the
one. Signature Ron Trent and Chez Damier. If I was to buy any one piece
of vintage gear, this would be it, but I ain't b/c the Nord Modular does
a pretty damn good job of emulating and extending it.

nah, id put money on that being the dx21. classic detroit and
chicago to me is some dx bass and strings with a 909 or 808.
