RE: [313] Black Flag 2
Generally The End in London is my regular clubbing haunt. It has one of the best sound systems of any club going, and hearing The Stand... it really cut through and blew away most other tracks. It has such an energy level when the volume is backing it up. But if it puts you in mind of progressive uk stuff... well I can see how you'd feel, association with things that you don't like (through the simple bassline for example) can put you off stuff that is otherwise classier. >I passed on the 12". I hope the album isn't more of the same, although from >Cyclone's reviews it sounds like it's better than that. It's very different, I think the BF release was pitched to the dancefloor, a fun track, the album is less a dancefloor release though there are some tracks that you could play, it's very sophisticated. It's a progression of Silent Phase with some new ideas, influences. >I just question why he's gone the route he's chosen. He's not the kind of person to be affected by status, I don't think, or trends - others on this list who have known or worked with Stacey I am sure would agree, and I know many have. I think he is very, very underrated in Europe as a DJ. He puts so much into it. You can just tell!

Hey, call me crazy, but I like this record. I don't know if you guys ever play on a big soundsystem, in a large club, but this record works real well in that situation. Its a single -- its the "big club hit". I'd rather play a big club hit by Stacey Pullen than, say, Daft Punk any day of the week. Besides, its much in the vein of the prior Black Flag release. Re: [313] Black Flag 2
Stacy's DJ Kicks is the worst one of the bunch (I've had all of them in my possesion at one point in time or another). His overuse of effects on every mix shows some insecurity about his mixing ability underneath (anyone who has used the Pioneer mixer knows what an off mix sounds like with a healthy dose of echo or reverb on it). The track selection is great however. I'm not saying Stacy is a bad DJ however since I have seen him many times and always been blown away. As for his newer tracks, I haven't dug any of the black flag stuff : 'Sweat' overused an already worn out sample IMHO with a bassline which was borderline UK hard house. Still looking forward to the album though.. todd - Original Message - From: "lo sens" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Phonopsia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, December 31, 2000 4:07 AM Subject: Re: [313] Black Flag 2 > To compare the EP with really bad cheesy UK house is > overstating it's ordinariness, I agree. > > And I agree with you about his DJing: he's taken a > route I could never have imagined after listening to > his DJ Kicks mix, which ranks as one of my favourites. > I've only heard him play once, last year (1999), and > he was a real letdown (lots of Basement Jaxx, > Yoshitoshi type tracks, which I guess the new Black > Flag fits in with). Praise and Criticism of Stacey Pullen - Was [Re: [313] Black Flag 2]

I passed on it simply because I don't need another record like that. But it dissapoints me because it's so typical. I expect something distinct from Stacey Pullen. To speak to Peter's points: I think "The Floor" is more innovative than "The Stand". But that isn't my favorite work from Carl Craig either. I think both "The Floor" and "Throw" are pretty weak by Carl Craig standards for the first three-four minutes of the full versions of each track (this coming from an enormous Carl Craig fan). But they really come into their own after the lengthy loopy intros. Maybe if "The Stand" used circus samples or had Carl Craig singing, I would like it better. ;) >And I agree with you about his DJing: he's taken a >route I could never have imagined after listening to >his DJ Kicks mix, which ranks as one of my favourites. >I've only heard him play once, last year (1999), and >he was a real letdown (lots of Basement Jaxx, >Yoshitoshi type tracks, which I guess the new Black >Flag fits in with). Did he ever play out the same sort >of stuff that he plays on the DJ Kicks cd? Yes, he deifinitely spun better material once upon a time. I've recounted my experiences seeing him spin a few times on the list, so if you're an old-timer, press delete. Fall '97 - Seattle: First time seeing him spin. My expectations were solely based on the (then) relatively recent DJ Kicks release. I was hoping for greatness. This was simply the best set I've seen in my life. He was playing lots of material akin to the DJ Kicks release, like Track Relaxer type-stuff, but I didn't recognize a single track. Most of them were amazing. He was in the mix at least 70% of the time. The mixing was flawless and energetic. I left after about two hours because I had seen all I could possibly hope to see. This is the benchmark by which I still measure all other DJ sets (and I've seen some pretty damn good ones since). Fall '98 - London: Four-hour set in the chill room @ The End. I caught the first two hours. He played some great older funk/soul to start things off, then segued into deep house. He seemed to be having a good time - kind of a party atmosphere. I don't think he was taking it particularly seriously because he was in the Lounge. But it was good for the environment. I left after two hours to see Juan Atkins spin in the main room. All told, Pullen's set was nice for what it was. It was good to be surprised. When I tried to introduce myself to him, and tell him he'd spun the the best set I'd ever seen, he was completely rude and brushed me off. I never expect much in those situations, because I'm sure that getting swamped with affection from strangers could get annoying after a while. For what it's worth, everyone else I've ever talked to has been more than friendly (particularly Detroit folk). May '00 - San Francisco: The show was at the MOMA's 10th anniversary party. Crowd was an interesting mixture of art patrons and ravers. The venue was unbelievably swank. Pullen gave me my first taste of a set like you described. Frankly, there wasn't a lot of good music played. Most of it was very standard and exceedingly normal. I would have been very happy if he'd been playing Yoshi Toshi stuff. There were a few moments when he threw in harder chicago house, but right when it would start to get going, it would all be deflated by some progressive crap. I left feeling like I'd seen Carl Cox again. No one can fault his technique though. His skills are stellar. May '00 - DEMF: He had nowhere to go but up in my mind, after being dissapointed in San Francisco. He definitely did a good job by those standards, and there were some sustained moments of brilliance. This set is well documented on Groovetech. I was pleased at the recovery in this set, but it was still not back up to '97 standards, and was not as "pure" as the other sets @ DEMF IMHO. If I had seen the DEMF set in San Francisco, I would have been very pleased, but when you've already been blown away by uncompromised brilliance from Minx, Theo Parrish, Mike Grant, Mike Clark and Basic Channel w/Tikiman, you need to raise the bar, and I felt like he didn't quite do that. My $.02. Still very hopeful for the new album, but not running out the door to see him spin in DC anytime soon if he should be in the neighborhood. In such a techno unfriendly area, I don't think I'd want to see him spin here. Tristan ==

1) Having heard the album in its _very_ early stages and knowing what elements Stacey has injected into the album, I'm sure the album will be brilliant. 2) As far as the 12" goes, it's a piece of dancefloor destruction - I've been caning this for almost a year now (Stacey gave me a test pressing last January) and it never fails to work the crowd. Substandard UK cheeze? Would you call Carl's Paperclip People material that? "The Stand" (or "Sweat, for that matter) is not that much different than "Floor". 3) FYI: "Polyphonic Destruction" was already two years old when Stacey gave the track to Mr. C for the Subterrain compilation. To compare the EP with really bad cheesy UK house is overstating it's ordinariness, I agree. And I agree with you about his DJing: he's taken a route I could never have imagined after listening to his DJ Kicks mix, which ranks as one of my favourites. I've only heard him play once, last year (1999), and he was a real letdown (lots of Basement Jaxx, Yoshitoshi type tracks, which I guess the new Black Flag fits in with).
