Re: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label)
every post I get like this keeps me 15 more seconds from the tedium of everyday music production. I especially like it how people point out the obvious (a whiny post about whining?) kinda like when ppl fuck up a joke, but then explain it all in detail in hopes of tying it all together, the punchline culminating in roar of laughter. I'll be accused of millisms. -tehfux - Original Message - From: "Odeluga, Ken" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "[EMAIL PROTECTED] Org" <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 1:50 AM Subject: FW: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label) > I don't see you blocking THIS from the discussion. Re: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label)
No flame here cause that's what I'm squawkin'. Actually, I can't even see the problem with the store selling it because if it sold, the retailers may decide to stock it, especially before its due out. Perhaps retailers do that to see if there's a demand. Running a label myself, all I hope for by the time promos copies end up in stores or is sold by individuals in which ever way they do, is that the promos themselves have resulted in sales, write ups, forged and fortified beneficial business relationships, and air/dj play, and they have. That in itself justifies the expense and it beats them sitting on your living room floor gathering dust. My 2 cents, --Shameless Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet wrote: Try as I might, I can't see the problem here. The guy's paid for the record, so it's his to do with as he likes: sell, give away, review, use as frisbee, whatever. He could snap it over his knee if he felt like it, that's his right. Very true, but you're refering to the big time music business there. They allocate more copies for promos than the techno labels so they may feel tthe need to keep account of them sent out as promos. On the other hand, since we see em' in the store bins, it show us how much they really care at the end of the day. I figure the reason they put that stamp on there to insure the stations would play them and not sell them. Perhaps techno labels need to start putting that same stamp on their promos and it makes more sense because of smaller budgets. mkb wrote: On Mon, 14 Jan 2002, phono_funk wrote: not to mention, when given away it becomes the property of whoever it is given to and they can do as they please with it. Re: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label)
Look, we need to put all this "selling promos" stuff into perspective here. The techno music business is such that its a good thing that the record is in circulation and not, god forbid, thrown away or hidden in someone's collection, not getting any needle time. At least its out there for people who want it. If the guy is selling the record on ebay, how much money can he really make off it? A couple bucks? Ok, ten bucks at the most, for a record that is about to be released which according to the guy, had purchased it himself. Its called a free country, its called a free market. Besides you NEVER include promos in your overall sales. Its an expense labels have to pay to get their music out to the audience 'free of charge' and not to mention, when given away it becomes the property of whoever it is given to and they can do as they please with it. If you don't want people to sell your promos, then don't make promos. This is one of the things that bugs me about Detroit/or techno people. Its not a million dollars at stake here. Take a chill pill. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: With all due respect, I was merely trying to put the record in the hands of someone that would really get some use out of it by playing it out.
