IMO You people are crazy. I live in Detroit and most any time I hear him
spin or see him he's a total ass. I am not much for his DJing, maybe he
just likes to be wasted when he DJs Detroit.

man i dont just respect him. in fact i never meet anyone who feels
the way i do about his tracks. he is by far my bigest influence in
producing as well. it would be a dream to me if i could only see him.
but i really dont like some styles of eletronic music. at the same
time that good techno is maybe the most important thing in my life,
dancing tribal techousy is something that i just cant stand. but u
bet i respect derrick may or anyother famous dj who spin for living.
if i had the oportunity of live by spining records i would also play
all the christian smith discography.
but i think im free to say that i dont like tribal techouse.
whatever.. i stil have my hope of seeing the man spin and listen to
something like Icon or Ilusion.

 take care u all.

men and women can sometimes be mindblowingly good...
and sometimes mindblowingly bad.
depending on moods n grooves...

Thats what I said - it depends what mood he is in.

that's etched as part of our psyche
go beyond the dance
and experience the various salsas of life
I try my best - perhaps that why I went to see him for the third time in 2
weeks even though the previous 2 sets were the same...

if everyone was the same all the time

they would be boring
Back to my point on hearing the same set 3 times - if you have the ability,
musical ear, ability to understand the crowd that Derick has then why did he
tour with one bag of records and play the same set. He gets paid lots of
cash to play the least he could do is true to the people who pay their cash
to hear him and let the set take shape with the night instead of coming in
with preprogrammed ideas of exactly what he will do no matter what.

if you got everything you wanted

you would be bored

Luckily I dont so my life is one big magical mystery tour :-)

Cheers

I first saw him only about 6 or 7 years ago in the Sub Club in Glasgow
despite having followed his work slavishly since 1987- he was the first DJ
who literally reduced me to tears (sob, sob!) and I've seen him about 10
times since then- he has been shit- and I mean shit- about 6 times- very

the road tribal techno- so far removed from the complex music he used to

Re: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details)

2002-02-26 Thread james bond
dj's with an exquisite profile, such as mayday's,
are expected to perform. there is so much background
behind the person, that the average audience don't understand
REALLY where they are comin' from, and just how FAR they have
travelled, let alone understand what they have seen and heard over an
extended career.

the crowd may have high expectations
these can vary greatly
these can alter the mood of the room
the room may be inadequate acoustically
the room may be unsuitable in many different ways
the monitor might not be able to separate different frequencies
the tonearm could be bent
the system could run feedback
the drinks could be spiked
the cables may be loose
somebody said something stupid
somebody could be hangin' t close
the fish might have not been the catch of the day
the wine could have been oxidized
the bed at the hotel may have been used inappropriately
the flight may have been too long
the queue at the airport may have been too long
the local rag traders my have written some b.s. about some m.f.
the crossfader may be leaking
the crossfader may be lost on the floor somewhere

it goes on, and on,
...and on and
on

there are an untold number of factors that determine the
absolute nature of a situation.. and the nature of a dj set

for all the m.f's in sydney tonite;
please accept derrick for anythang he presents
and don't analyse anything while you there..just
enjoy the life that he bring

the debonair.

Re: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details)

2002-02-26 Thread Toby Frith
The first half of his "Open" mix Cd in 1998 (?) under the Ministry of Sound
Label is sublime, but it soon descends into drudgery IMHO. Although it's a
Mix Cd (nicely cleaned up and all that) it does give some indication of his
DJing style.

I'll be looking forward to Easter Sunday though, he's never disappointed
when I've seen him and will play off the wall tracks that you might not hear
at Lost otherwise.

I first saw him only about 6 or 7 years ago in the Sub Club in Glasgow
despite having followed his work slavishly since 1987- he was the first DJ
who literally reduced me to tears (sob, sob!) and I've seen him about 10
times since then- he has been shit- and I mean shit- about 6 times- very
good twice and amazing twice. When he is shit he just plays very middle of
the road tribal techno- so far removed from the complex music he used to
make- with no dynamics or emotion- as if he feels the audience either
wouldn't understand or don't deserve to hear the real good stuff- he is a
very frustrating character but then that's life!

playing his own classic stuff - like Icon, are few and far between ...
although Strings of Life, I've heard even Surgeon play! I think it's fair to

RE: [313] may's djing (was Lost - further details)

2002-02-26 Thread allnight
man i dont just respect him. in fact i never meet anyone who feels
the way i do about his tracks. he is by far my bigest influence in
producing as well. it would be a dream to me if i could only see him.
but i really dont like some styles of eletronic music. at the same
time that good techno is maybe the most important thing in my life,
dancing tribal techousy is something that i just cant stand. but u
bet i respect derrick may or anyother famous dj who spin for living.
if i had the oportunity of live by spining records i would also play
all the christian smith discography.
but i think im free to say that i dont like tribal techouse.
whatever.. i stil have my hope of seeing the man spin and listen to
something like Icon or Ilusion.

 take care u all.

May is a legend dj wise IMHO.

I don't think I've heard a better set than his one at DEMF 2000. (on line at
groovetech) -

Last really good set I saw live was at The End in London in Feb 2000
alongside DJ Rolando - came on at 12 and rocked it - played lots of Brit
techno (cosmic, killabite etc) plus yer usual detroit classics; I was
dancing anyway.
