Does anyone know what gear brinkman uses for production, especially the
stuff on his 'Rosa' compilation? I re-listened to this last night, lights
down, amp turned way up and lost myself in the way he makes each of the
elements so rhythmic and dance around one another. Truly amazing stuff,
always changing and contorting in the slightest and sometimes no so
slightest ways.

Highly highly recommended comp.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Can anyone explain to me the subtle difference between Neuton the Label

RE: [313] micro house

2001-10-05 Thread Dave Clark
Steve Bug and his buddy "DJ Clay" (not sure if that's correct) came to
perth recently and played a great set of microhouse.

I love it, even if I did find the wire article to be mostly a wordy,
hulking morass of incomprehensibility. I swear, if I had to write an
article on microhouse it would just be a list of labels, artists, and
releases.

It's a pretty broad term the way the Wire uses it anyway - the stuff
done by Thomas Brinkmann in his Soul Center guise (as opposed to his
really clicky noisy stuff like 'klik') is quite different to the sort
of stuff that luomo does. Luomo, Soul Center, Hakan Lidbo etc are
mostly soulful stripped back house, whereas your Clicks n cuts, farben,
peter f speiB, etc is much more experimental glitchy stuff.

I love it all anyway so I'm not bothered. The Kid606 track on Clicks n
Cuts 2 is absolutely the bomb.

In our scene we refer to microhouse as "Funkenhaus" which I think is a
lot better.

-Dave

ps Force Tracks is all good except for a certain Yoko Mono release -
stay away from that one!

Probably. Oh well.

Tech-house to me is loungy and atmospheric, but yet dancable;
swing-skippity beat, with a little funk...sorta like "Weekend"(forgot
the artist name) but its on Neuton.

Memory's fuzzy, but I think Mike Rubin called most of the sources used by
Richie Hawtin on the new mix 'deep burble'. That's one of the better ones I've
heard; it seems to apply to a lot of it, whatever it is.

Two words on Richie's DE9Studio One. Anyway, the name game is
giving me the creeps. Received yesterday for the first time, something
new from a artist on Axis/Tomorrow that is not Jeff Mills! A 3 track CD
by Petar Dundov of noise and soundscapes. Sounds like it can be used in
a episode of Investigative Reports on A&E. Pretty neat and interesting.

I second the Kompakt notion -- the worst of that label, from what I've heard,
is merely good. They keep getting better and more diverse. They certainly
aren't painting themselves into a corner with one sound, are they? And is it
just me, or does Total 3 have more than a smidge of Detroit in it?

Force Tracks -- there's another label with some quality control. Hypercity is
one of my favorites of the year thus far, not a boring second to be heard.
(Sorry, that sounded like Larry King.)

2001-10-04 Thread John Osselaer

There's also a remix EP of it with

mixes from Richie Hawtin (deep and groovy, Closer-To-The-Edit-style) and
Octave One in their trademarked 430West-style.

--> Yep,that's an excellent one. I bought that less than half a mile from
the hotel where I had interviewed Richie just minutes before. Had done the
interview, walked in the store, saw the record that he had just mentioned
and bought it without even listening to it, which was something I had never
done before...

The locked grooves on the vinyl version of DE9 are also pretty cool to throw
into a minimal house/techno set. I actually did that last Friday when
playing in a small pub. I happened to play some of the records Rich had cut
up so I could fool around with the locked grooves a bit.

RE: [313] micro house

2001-10-04 Thread msmith00
Micro House is another one of those great Wired terms, defined as a cross
between the glitch, noise shaping, field recordings, and general ambience that
is usually termed as 'microsound', and minimal house. This has already been
termed 'glitch' by the many, long before the Wired dinosaur came along and
tried to further pigeonhole what has become probably the most pigeonholed genre
of music there is thus far: techno.

Dan Bell's Tresor release only touches the surface of this genre, and Herberts
wonky mix on Tresor works more with booty and straight up techno than with
glitch. A good primer would be Mille Plateaux's "Clicks & Cuts Vol.2" which
many microsounders hate as it is the definitive forming of micro-house,
something they thrive to stay away from. More unmixed material would be
Gramm 'Personal Rock' on Source, Jan Jelinek 'Loop Finding Jazz Records' on
Source, anything by Farben (who is Jan Jelinek and Gramm). Peter F. Spiess
makes good with his interpretation on his last album for Klang called 'Crystal
Polymorph'. Auch (Eckhard Ehlers) takes his microsounds and applies them to
the minimal 4/4 on his album 'Kiss Tommorow Goodbye' on Force, and the
remixes 'Remix Tommorow Goodbye' with remixes by Sutekh, Marz, Farben and
others portrays many sides of glitch ranging from beautiful jazzy glitch
(farben), dark moving glitch (sutekh) and crazy grinding glitch (marz). Auch
also has many other releases on AudioNL, and Force.

On the west coast the San Fran explosion that brought us Tejada, also brought
us Kit Clayton, Sutekh, Twerk and Safety Scissors, all purveyors of glitch and
I might add all mighty fine artists in their own respect.

Canada too is up on glitch, there's a tonne of stuff pouring out of Montreal
right now (the new Force/Mille Plateaux/Position Chrome office is there now).
Jetone from Montreal's new album Ultramarine is out, and receiving great
reviews. Check the force inc. site www.force-inc.net

good mixes in the vein of microhouse; I believe there is a farben set on
www.dublab.com (check out the burnt freidman mix on the same show, excellent
stuff). dublab put out a great cd earlier this year, so many good tracks, well
worth the money to help support them. Also check out anything put out on plug
research of late "voices in my lunchbox" or "intermissions are both really good
cd's. Ricardo Villalobos also just put out a mix cd called "Love Family Trax"
it's not as good as seeing him and Martin bang it out live, but its certainly
up there.

I could go on for hours, I've been playing this stuff for years, its not new,
its just got a new name :)

Cheers

I agree that this album is definitely dope. It's almost like Atom Heart is
taking the piss out of the whole minimal house sound with his trademark
sense of humor. The rhythms are very Chicago too.

Atom Heart is obviously kicking some arse in the "micro house" subgenre as
well, especially the Geez'n'Gosh album "My Life With Jesus" which actually
does make me think of becoming born again...

I know Fehlmann was a least involved in production quite a bit. He works
loosely with The Orb as well as doing his own material.
I do believe at least one of the BoBs (badorb 12"s) was SE under a
different guise.

Journalists like inventing words and half the time the artists make them up
too (eg 'skratch music' by Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike in favour of
'turntablism') and kids in Chicago came up with 'house'. My current faves
are 'skip-hop', the (dubious) new Australian genre taking in pub hip-hop
like The Avalanches, and 'tech-hop', which describes the new techno/digital
take on urban music exemplified by Missy Elliott and Timbaland. They're not
supposed to be restrictive, and box people in creatively, it's just fun.
It's like a secret language.

slightly mixed (i.e., cuts may run together a bit, but you get a huge hunk
of them). Playhouse has a comp out entitled "Famous When Dead". You might
find the Dub Taylor and Dirk Diggler stuff interesting. Look into the
Raum...Musik, Salz and Force labels. The Elting_Lieb CD is awfully nice. I
still love M.R.I.'s "Rhythmogenesis", but it goes a bit more lush than
clicky. Great tech-house which still fits in the edge of that umbrella imo.

cant really afford to buy 12" and dont buy pre mixed compilations.
so what cds should i be looking out for ?

2001-10-04 Thread Brendan Nelson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That Acapulco night in London (at Plastic People) bills itself as, among
other things, a "micro-house" night, doesn't it?

I expect that a more technical definition of micro house would be that it
tends to rely heavily on rhythmic patterns with more than 16 steps in a bar;
that it eschews standard 909 drums and instead opts for clipped percussive
sounds whose length is measured in pico- rather than milliseconds; and that
it is the bastard child of Maurizio and Dan Bell...

micro house: minimal house (usually german) by the likes of daniel bell,
herbert, losoul, farben, isolee, etc.

labels: playhouse, klang ...

good example (in my opinion, but could be wrong): the button-down mind of
daniel bell mix cd on tresor

I think it's just a term invented by Wire journalists (who also branded hard
tech step "NeuroFunk") ;)

I suppose it could apply to labels like mosaic, stuff by Thomas Brinkmann
and the like. it is a bit of a crap term to be honest.
