Berlin's history as a city over the last 100 years or so is the very definition of "transient" so Brophy's remarks seem a little misjudged I think. The downLow CD is well worth picking up (not to sound like the dL fanboy). I'd love a vinyl copy of it at some point but can see that there prolly ain't loads of us who will run out and pick it up on wax. Anyway... It's all good stuff that I've heard. I really loved the Planet E 12" for how unique it sounded when I first got it, which wasn't even when it first came out, but it certainly is timeless techno. Wicked stuff. I haven't been to shops in the USA other than in Miami, but think I have been to many memorable shops in (central) Europe/UK. Fat Cat back in 1995 was the only one I think would rival Hardwax, both in terms of classic stock, unsual stuff to discover, and interesting/funny situations, like bumping into Dave Angel entering the shop with his spliff on, or introducing Basic Channel 01 to then Advent's Colin McBean... Reckon that Hardwax in 1999 had an almost complete catalog in stock for labels like UR, Metroplex, Dancemania, Strictly Rhythm, many Trax/DJ Int'l, etc... Clone in Rotterdam and Rub-a-Dub in Glasgow are/were very good and also carry loads of classics and (techno) labels catalogs. Also Piccadilly in Manchester is rather good, but they are more diverse and do not stock so much... On a somewhat lower level, than the list would go on&on like Rare Records in Eindhoven, Vinyl Junkies and Smallfish in London, Import in Paris, etc... > But only Hardwax is on a block (actually they are in a back One thing really cool about HW is the staircase leading to the shop full of grafitti and signatures from DJs/artits... Oh, and seeing the first snow flakes falling last year while some rather deep and dope stuff was on the shop soundsystem was fun as well (at least to a tropic guy like me). Hmm . . . Tweekin in San Francisco, Submerge/SID (of course), and three no longer in existence -- Ameba in SF (not the current Amoeba which is a good super-store), Exotique in Seattle and Sonic Groove in NYC. Other ones I have liked include Record Time in Detroit, 12-Inch Dance Records in DC (also out of business now), Eightball in NYC (also gone), BPM in SF, Flying and Vinyl Junkies in London, Gramophone in Chicago and and our own Platinum and Starbass (gone) here in Portland. There are quite a few well known house/techno stores that I have not been to (LA and Toronto in particular) so this is hardly a comprehensive list. But only Hardwax is on a block (actually they are in a back building accessible through a courtyard entrance) with about six cafes having a variety of good food and beer and a nice view of the canal :) fh - >On Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 04:34:19PM -0800, Fred Heutte wrote: >> a fine lunch at the cafe on the corner. Re: (313) Berlin this past weekend
I just got back to Portland from Berlin via Frankfurt. Ended up not making it to any clubs, actually. I tried to get in at Week-End around 1 am but got the "are you on the invite list" rejection. Which I thought was standard door-ese for "scram" but apparently was because the club was full. In any event that gave me a chance to wander through Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg at peak hour on a Saturday night. There is a kind of up-beat attitude in Berlin which I really enjoyed. I didn't want to go all the way out to Berghain and get a second rejection the same evening so that never came to pass. I was actually in Berlin for an ecology conference at the Freie Universitat so I didn't get to join in with the 313ers at Hardwax on Saturday but I did go on Monday and very glad I did, what a great store. Not deep in everything but deep in a lot of things I like. I ended up with an original-issue LP of U Roy version tracks, a live EU go go album I didn't have (and I thought I had all their stuff), an acid house thing from Detroit (!) around 1990 by "M$.V" called "Out of Your Mind" that Art Forest produced, the repress of Josh Wink's "Meditation Will Manifest" (the only record I've ever lost, about 8 years ago, one of the few Wink tracks I really like, and one I haven't been able to find), and, coincidentally enough, Henrik Schwarz's new "Leave My Head Alone Brain" which they were playing on the store system and is just mental-as-anything. Not only that but I had a beer and a fine lunch at the cafe on the corner. That seals it - Hardwax is one of maybe four or five top DJ stores I've ever been to :) fh
Re: (313) Berlin this past weekend
hey francis, all my peeps from ireland arrived, just about. i ran out of juice on my mobile, so could not contact you. friday night i spent in week12end with sasse playing. it was so-so as the place did not get very busy and the music was, well, weak - only a metro area cut stood out for me. very different from my last visit there. tried to get into panorama bar at about 3.30, but the (very scary looking) bouncers didn't like the cut of our jib. so, back to week12end (didn't think of watergate). saturday was spent in museums (pergamonmuseum my favourite), then a meal in borchardt, possible one of the best i've ever had. then in a cocktail bar called ambulance in north of the city with a cool dreadlocked dj playing chi house, disco, funk, crazy rhythm tracks. we left there at reasonable hour (1.0) to go to berghain. holy moly, what it says on wikipedia doesn't come close. the lighting and sound is brilliant - they must have spent a fortune on the place. the massive strobe lights almost induced an epileptic fit they were so powerful (and disorientating). the shaved-headed muscle marys were a sight to behold - as were the unfeasibly tall women, the valkyries. the music downstairs in the main berghain section was good. a dj wearing a red planet t-shirt (think it was don williams) played some great deep, dubby stuff, plus rng and that great hutton drive track on frantic flowers. upstairs was alright, the live sets of bruno pronsato (boring) and daze maxim (better) were a mixed bag. then a hamburg dj marc schneider took the reins and thats when i firmly encamped in panorama bar. the music was brilliant - this http://www.discogs.com/release/5996 was the highlight for me and summed up the night. had to leave at 8.0 in the morning, but it only seemed like the place was really getting going then. but i had my brain, liver and children to consider. i am actually glad that our licensing laws in ireland are so restrictive, because berlin nightlife is not condusive to good health. i saw a quote about berlin during the weimar republic: "the dance clubs were full and the patrons took as many drugs as they did lovers." glad to see nothing has changed - berlin, your dance partner is death. On 21/11/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: My friends and I had a great time there (again!). Kept it quiet(!) by going to Sternradio on Friday as it's local to our hostel and having travelled and just eaten a large meal at the nice Mexican on Rosenthaler Platz I lacked energy and indeed was in bed by 3:30am. Saturday day I took the S Bahn to Potsdam and had a fascinating day checking the palaces etc. Nightime we went to Week12end about midnight, heard Ame (I think it was he judging from what was played), HENRIK SCHWARZ who was once again devastatingly good and Dixon (ditto on the "at least I think it was him"). Heard people slag the place for being snobby and we have had trouble getting in before but once in it seemed to me nice club, good sound, amazing views, top DJs. €8. You wouldn't get that in the UK. Then it was on to our Mecca Berghain for another night of unrelenting hard tech. At some points in the night the music or DJing might not have been 100% my taste but the place just has such a vibe (and system). Managed to keep in the main bit and out of Panorama (as I find it too easy to spend half the night chatting in there!) the whole time (we left about 13:00 Sunday). We then ended up having some rather bizarre adventures before grinding to a halt on Sunday night. At my last count there was another UK posse headed there, one from Eire maybe? (did you get everybody there eventually?), one person from the USA? and of course the residents such as Roman. I totally failed to get in contact with anyone after suffering a PC failure on Thursday before I left and then just going with the flow once there - but I think a fair few were planning on Week12end. Re: (313) Berlin
hi! just returned home from work... 1) the best flead market is at boxhagener platz in friedrichshain - the area t.raumschmiere lives - and mostly young people hang around - 99% locals - what has a positive effect on the price of the records. the collection at strasse des 17. juni is huge - but this is a pure tourists flea market. records starting at 10 euros if you find some cheap ones :-) 2) all the shops are open on saturday - not on sunday the opening hours of hardwax on saturday are from 12am to ? - don't know exactly about closing time cause when the weather is nice i'm usually sitting on the opposite of the river at the Ankerklause for a nice cup of coffee at 10am - waiting for hardwax to open... can't add anything to the list brian provided - only the info that "Platten Pedro" is a must see... this shop rocks. he has besides of 10 thounsands of lps 180 thousand singles in his shop. you can't see any walls in there - only records... 3) ? if you wanna buy records for 1 euro the best choice will be flea markets. another nice one is at the end of zossener str. - near spacehall record shop - if you think about looking for the minimux-maximum 4 lp set - check out spacehall. got mine for 49euros and i had the choice between gsa version and international version. they have most stuff hardwax has but they are little more expensive - about 1 euro per record. great selection of minimal stuff and cds. 4) watergate is still great - went there on saturday to see moodyman and the place was still rocking when i left at 6.30am. my personal favourite is berghain atm. if you wanna sleep for an hour or so - they even have darkrooms :-) it's the best location - not just because of the fantastic architecture. don't bring your camera. they don't wanna have any pictures taken - so the security will do a proper search - they even have a female one for the girls. had to leave my camera at the counter. the few girls that go there on a saturday night are a) with some gay male friends or b) because they know that it's safe to go there being a woman that just wants to party instead of having to scare away the horny guys all the time. berghain is naturally a good place to listen to house music although they allways have djs coming from other styles - like monolake few weeks ago - laurent garnier last weekend and (excerpt from my weblog): coming up next week (friday) @ panoramabar: Playhouse pres.: Warhol's unfinished symphony - with: Ricardo Villalobos / Daniel Bell / Heiko MSO / Meat saturday?... maybe Maria: www.clubmaria.de or WMF www.wmfclub.de or berghain/panoramabar www.berghain.de or watergate www.water-gate.de have fun! roman/berlin/germany --- energylog - read the news - www.energylab.de - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, June 13, 2005 3:05 PM Subject: re: (313) Berlin BERLIN QUIZ> winner gets illustrious prize. There is a copy of it on amazon.de that says it is in English and in NTSC: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/dvd-de/B0002AOP9A/ tech-info/ref=ed_tec_dp_2_1/028-6758512-0331703 I am not sure if this is the same as the one previously linked to, if that is of any concern to you... Available soon? My German is not so good, but it looks like maybe on July 5th from amazon.de... I wrote a massive long post about it, but after reading back through it, it details more about how much I drank than anything else. So I'm not posting it Briefly.. Made it to Hardwax, after drinking for about 6 hours straight and a load of tequila. We virtually fell in there, must have stank of booze as well. anyway, great techno shop. Ken, you were 100% correct. Managed to get to 2 clubs as well. Water-Gate (fantastic place and views) till about 4/5 ish Tresor from about 5.30 am till about 9.30 am. That place is mental. Glad I went, nearly didn't bother. Brilliant brilliant city, I need to go back, going to start saving straight away. We barely scratched the surface of the place, feel like I pretty much missed everything. Massive thanks to all on here who gave me tips on where to go. I'm gonna have to say Hardwax Alex 'cause you're wrong! It's not just new stuff by a long way. You'll find the 'vintage' (meaning original '70s stuff, maybe earlier), recent - meaning late ninties, new of course and everything in between. Everything electronic, rhythmic, danceable or with an edge of weirdness. Really mate for anyone into 'our' music, Hardwax is a must during any visit to Berlin - no matter how short (Ok Hardwax guys, I'll have that discount next time I'm in ;-) k

try www.loveparade.net for info on parties in Berlin, go to the dates section and add city and date also www.techno.de is another good one.. happy hunting :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Fri 28/05/2004 14:17 To: 313@hyperreal.org Cc: Subject: (313) Berlin Hi Folks. After some help again. I've just been told I've been booked to go on my mates stag do next weekend. We're off to Berlin, which is great obviously, but a little unfortunate as I've been dying to go to Berlin to check it out, but this is a flying vist (literally one night) and there's going to be no time to check record shops or anything really. And it'll be a while before I can go back.. so, I've been asked to find a good party for Saturday night. It's Saturday June 5th I'll be there, anyone know of any good parties? probably not a banging techno thing, but anything really that you think would be good. Also, after a bit of help on other matters - is there a particular area to head for with a few nice bars to drink in, maybe an area that has a few good resturants? pref. not your average saturday night on the town type places (if you know what I mean) and, if there was one record shop in the whole of Berlin I have to visit - which would it be? I was told by a friend a while back that Berlin was one of the best places ot find old stuff. I think if I can sneak off to just one shop that would be cool. Preferably a second hand place where I can have a dig for some old disco etc? Any ideas...? I know hardwax, but I think I'll give it a miss because its all new stuff no? I can get most of my new bits here, so yeah, really after a large/unmissable second hand shop or digging spot. Please hit me back privately if you can help. Re: [313] Berlin Record Stores
You might want to check out Hardwax, Tresor records, and a couple of others... Go here, http://music.hyperreal.org/rotator/germany.htm and make sure that Berlin is in the address. There are stores in Muenchen, Koeln and Dortmund listed as well, so be sure that Berlin is in the address... If you're looking specifically for techno as a genre, Hardwax is your best bet. If you're ever in Bremen, I have a list of GOOD stores there... ;) On Mon, 14 May 2001, Michael Adamczyk wrote: > Can somebody recommend some Berlin record stores > for me? Re: [313] berlin/detroit
well, IMO the music tie comes from parallells (sp) in economy and social standings. It goes way back with Germany, and has so many social, economic and political layers-with both Germany and Detroit. Tell your friend to look up pre & post Wiemar Germany and the fall of the German economy after WWI which in end fused the rise of Hitler etc. It is then that the German economy really started to decrease and fall onto hardships. My last two years of college I spent researching pre and post Wiemar Germany and the tolls it took on the artistic community-specifically the Bauhaus School of Art & the departments of typography/design and the weaving workshop. SO, if he wants to take a gander at my sources-let me know. As for Detroit, focus on the industrial boom, esp. with automobiles and the imports and exports of Detroit industry. The riots is also where he should focus, and how they effected the city from racial, economic & infostructure standpoints. I think to make the paper complete Id suggest interviewing some city officials ho were around then and also producers such as Mike Banks,Kelli Hand, Allan etc who have watched the city change over the years. ermm, so i hope all i said here was correct-as a history major,id feel like an ass if i was way off base. lesson for today is closed diana Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
