Re: (313) Deaf Ears

2004-04-15 Thread Greg Earle

I'm afraid it's pointless Martin ... I've pointed out the same
thing again and again and again, and no one does anything. They
just can't be arsed to select all the old replies in their
followup and press to remove them - it's just too hard
for them to do, apparently. Even though we ALL know that when
you read a message that consists of the reply at the very top
(a non-sequitur - replies should come *after* the text you're
replying to) and al of the previous 23 messages in the
thread below that, *NO ONE READS ANY OF THOSE PREVIOUS 23
MESSAGES THAT GOT INCLUDED* because the poster couldn't be arsed
to select all the old text and delete it.

Personally, I used to like Usenet software that rejected posts
with more lines of included text than new text. Draconian,
perhaps - but it at least made you think about what you were
posting, and it made you whittle down the old text, like it or not!

I think the list isn't setup correctly. The autoresponder is the author
of a mail by default, it should be the lists adress. So in order to
reply to the list i've got to use the "reply to all" button which
automatically sends the mail to the list, the writer and everybody who
answered already (using the cc: fields). Pretty annoying, cause i
usually use the reply button which sends the mail to the author, i
wonder why my mail didn't make it to the list, so i reply to the list
again. There you get the 2 copies. Bet it happens to others the same way.

Dear list operator, change that please.

Ronny

Why do people insist on send a mail to the list and the individuals as well?

I guess it's to do with the volumn of the music people have been
listening to in clubs...
You have to really SHOUT to get heard over that perminant buzzing
noise

Or Could be to do with if you do reply in Outlook it'll send it to the
individual, not the list. So you have to do reply all to get it to the
list..?

There is one good reason I can think of for replying to the list and the
individuals - if any of the people you reply to are only receiving the
313-digest, then they will see any responses to their emails more
quickly, rather than getting the digest the following day whilst an
enormous thread (Jeff Mills anyone ? ;-) runs and burns out unknown to them.

Saying that I've now given up on the digest because it's become unusable
due to people sending all of the replies back to the list !

Not really :)

True but if people edit mails properly you wouldn't get ten at the bottom of
each mail...

Also, the digest edition of this list is now unreadable, which I think is an
issue for us all...

If you reply to all, that's what it does - why does it matter anyway? You still
only get one mail
