He played live at Paxahau at the fest in May in Detroit, and it was dope. Definitely worth catching if he is playing live - the live approach makes things more exciting and dynamic. ~David z66 wrote: .. we been talking about the guy before. imho he's definitely worth checking although i don't like all of his material. his sound is a bit that of retrofuturistic, well produced and danceable, i'd say there is a big Kraftwerk influence. i never liked his big hit "Decompression" tho' except for the time i spotted it in a set at a party (thanks to Matt Chester:) -- worked there pretty well. i've only heard a Breezeblock mix by Mathew and he what he spun was all his own tracks. although subject's sound doesn't seem anything fresh, there's a something very special about it. i tend to appreciate him more and more, especially as i found older releases on Itiswhatitis Recordings, like: she is he [IIWII005] 2002 typerope [IIWII007] 2003 love letter to the enemy [IIWII009] 2004 >>>Z Cyclone Wehner wrote: I'm curious to get some info on this dude, seeing he's been getting major props for a while and his records are hot and he is rated by Richie Hawtin. Whoever said this, I have to agree 98%. I picked-up "Decompression" and "Behind The Mirror" and I have given them both as fair and open-minded and thorough a listen as I could muster. I've had both for about a month and I've listened to them at least 2 times a week during that time. The reason being that there has been such a kerfuffle about Mr Jonson on here recently surrounding his merits vs other people's opinions that these had been overstated. But above that, I remember people have been singing his praises forcefully (for his productions) for over a year. All I can comment on is these two records though, as I'm not sure if I've heard anything else by him. To me they are not poor, not bad, but there seems to be a mismatch between them the hype (in some quarters) which have preceded them, and the records themselves (to my mind). I like both tracks on the "Behind The Mirror" release more than the "Decompression" ones although having said that, I like "Ultraviolet" (side b of "Decompression) more than the actual main track. Like the person I quote (sorry, didn't see your name) I expected something much more special, production wise, style wise; something new, adventurous, something outstanding maybe. But these tracks are not that. (imo). What this says to me though is not that people are wrong to expect so much, but that I need to check out those earlier releases! Also, it seems people *want* to like the guy and his productions an awful lot. I can see the reasons for that: he's young, 'new', seems to be promising (his dad was a musician) and from what I hear, he seems an ok guy. Mostly though, what this situation seems to underline to me is a big need for new blood in this favourite music of ours, to take things to the next level or simply to pick up the torch of those who perhaps might need to consider handing it over. Wether MJ is going to prove one of the more notable examples of new blood in years to come, is still open to question, of course. I don't see any reason why he he oughtn't to be! But I don't think if he is notable in coming years, it will be for these two releases. k mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .
RE: (313) Mathew Jonson
I think the thing with this whole argument is that we shouldn't hype him up too much. I mean, essentially no matter how good the music is, he's not doing anything particularly new, more that he's refined it. I really like all the tracks he's done, they have a signature feel to it (It would be like listening in a club, and thinking "oh this sounds like Mathew Jonson") and this is naturally the first step to being a good or great artist. -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 26 July 2004 10:46 To: Phonopsia; Derek Plaslaiko.; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Matthew Johnson Where on the M-Nus site can I hear his latest? -Original Message- From: Phonopsia [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2004 11:24 PM To: Derek Plaslaiko.; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Matthew Johnson I could not agree more with all of Derek's rant. Note for the record, I've been evangelizing about Mathew Jonson since I first saw him live @ Fabric this Spring. I'm not saying that to underscore the 'ahead of the curve' factor, just to say that this is not some f*cking trend based on two new releases! Everyone will love it, and I want everyone to take note! That is the only reason I've taken time to mention it. Precisely as Derek said, the hype is there because the music represents everything that techno is. I simply don't have enough superlatives for it. If people want to see it as a trend, that speaks more about their jadedness than the quality of the music they're critiquing. No one has has ever consitiuted a trend on thier own, and his inimitability will always keep him afar from classification. Let's revisit this discussion in 5 years and see if it's a trend.
