That would be "The Scene". I know that set anywhere.

I aspired to be on the "Rap A Dance" contest on The Scene back in the late
80's.

there's a pic on the net of him wearing tight jeans and he was once

RE: (313) No comment. but Whitey on The Moon

2009-05-14 Thread Odeluga, Ken
OK, whilst I might not totally agree with it, that is a much better
[better explained, more articulate etc] point of view. It's interesting
and I like it.

I should add that I get your point re the Gil Scot Herron song.

A lot of people on this list would agree with the sentiment behind that
song.

Still, even as a relatively modest fan of Hawtin, I'd say it would be
unfair to apply that sentiment to him so unequivocally.

I dunno, seeing that kind of thing 'in the round' increases with age,
for a lot of people, I think.

[Is that selling out, or getting more mature? The jury's out on that].

Just so everyone knows, I block all posts coming from n4bble.com

If you want to post to 313 you have to be subscribed.

I object to Nabble because their business model is based around finding
E-Mail lists and archiving them without consulting the admin or users
of the list. They also allow posts to lists from non-subscribers, even
if the list doesn't allow non-subscribers. They say they don't but they
haven't properly implemented the restriction. I also don't trust them
not to harvest and re-sell e-mail addresses.

I also object to them archiving 313, even though I've told them not
to. It's being archived at least 2 other places, 3 if you count the
raw archive files on hyperreal. I've unsubscribed their mailbot
repeatedly. I shouldn't have allowed them to resubscribe in the first
place, but sometimes I approve subscriptions in a hurry without
scrutinizing the address.

They resub every time they notice I've unsubbed them. I'm tired of
their BS.

So if you use Nabble to read the 313 list -- sorry, but you'll have to
suck it up and learn to use and manage a mail client.

But in same time it's not a valuable human comportement to take someone for a

Having just returned from Iowa with ~120 lbs. of luggage (mostly records),
might I recommend that you get as many bags with wheels as possible, and that
you avoid stairs. Either that or bring a porter/DJ ho. ;) Or just get a laptop.

You ain't won yet buddy. I still got about 6-700 records still to come. God
knows how stupid I'll be next time. ;)

> PS can anyone recommend an insurance company in the UK?

Yeah, there was a good thread on Little Detroit about it a while back. What I
gleened from those recommendations and my subsequent research was that if you
want a specialty insurer (and you probably do), that Music Guard and Victor
Knight seemed to be the best options. Victor Knight is actually owned by
someone else who serves a broader area, but I can't recall their name right
now. I've been meaning to go wtih Victor Knight for quite some time now, just
need to get off my lazy arse and do it.

Yes/No: for your own security uses S/MIME or pretty good privacy called pgp.

But - you cannot prevent someone sending mail in your name. pgp / s/mine is to
sign your email with a key which only you have, and for which only you know the
passphrase. its just a signed mail. unfortunately hyperreal doesnt support mime
mails, only text/plain - so there is no way on hyperreal to know whether the
mail is from you or not - solution would be, if hyperreal would accept
pgp/sm/mime mail.

for more details: google and pgp or gpg

No, you did not get hacked at all. No one ever had access to your machine.

p.s.: i dont even think of trying it, but i suspect that it would be VERY easy
to send your boss a mail, with your sender, containg a virus.
Actually, I have fought with such things today - and i got a little solution,
but just for our setup, if it works or is possible with other mailer setups - i
dont know (yet).

"Late Night" is still one of my favorites. Not only is it Mills

both approaches are enough different to make it interesting.

I like it so much I have a double of this. The only problem is
that the pressing is extraordinarily weak -- just about the only

Actually, there was a Deep Detroit Volume 2 (subtitled "Magic
Tracks"), with tracks selected by Juan Atkins, also on Pow Wow
Trance. Volume 1 was a rebadged version of the Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes
Techno-Soul compilation on Tresor, but I've never really been sure
where volume 2 came from.

Those two comps contain some of the funnest Detroit music ever,
including (most especially) "Flash Flood" by Infiniti (probably my
favorite Juan Atkins track, aside from maybe the Maurizio remix of
"Think Quick"). I sure love them! They still pop up used from time to
time (even on vinyl, although the vinyl versions pack too many tracks
to a side).

Directly related to this thread is the Eddie Fowlkes-compiled _Trance
Tekno Express_, which even has "Trance" in its name. Taken together
with the two Deep Detroit compilations, it's the best summation I've
heard of where Detroit was at in the early 90s. I still listen to all
three all the time. Obviously at the time (1993) Detroit people didn't
have problems with the word "trance".

The original US version of Jeff Mills' _Waveform Transmissions Vol. 1_
was also issued on Pow Wow Trance. For a while there, Pow Wow Trance
had an interesting licensing deal with Tresor. They also had a good
one with ACV, issuing probably the best single-disc Robert Armani comp
ever made, and reissuing Leo Anibaldi's _Canibald_ as _The Virtual
Language_ (and losing the awesome ACV edition's gatefold art). The
main thing that characterized the Pow Wow Trance CDs was awesome music
and absolutely terrible cover art & design.

I've always blamed Union Jack's "Two Full Moons and a Trout" on Rising
High for this one (before the Union Jack crew started Platypus). I
remember getting the "Two Full Moons" doublepack and being totally
cheesed out by the faux epicness of the music. A lot of the early
Harthouse stuff came pretty close to crossing the line, too, even
though most of their stuff was more "acid trance" and would sound
incredibly weird to people raised on a diet of Global Underground
mixes (seriously, listen to that first Harthouse comp today and it
just stumbles all over the dance music map--in a good way).

Yeah, but mn... that second Public Energy single on Probe is still
one of the best hard trance records ever made. A lot of the B-sides
around the time of _Public Energy No. 1_ were also very trancy, in the
best possible way.

> Everyone goes on about Oakenfold but i put more blame on Paul Van

Yeah, but everything Ralf Hildenbutel (Sven Vath's ghostwriter) did
had a certain amount of class to it, even when it edged towards
melodic cheese. Paul van Dyk, Chocci's Chewns, Platypus, and the Goa
crowd are definitely what pushed the split, but they all had good
tunes. The problem, I think, was DJs who started focusing so narrowly
on trance to the exclusion of anything else.

I have two 12" versions of the Cabaret Voltaire's 'Keep On' - on these
the track I enjoy the most is his Land of Oz mix. Oakie wasn't always
lame, imo. Was the downward turn when he started using Blade Runner and
Dead Can Dance samples, or was it before then? hehe.

I love those Volume compilations. I only got 1 through 4 and on CD only. :-(

I know what you mean about the "Great Divide". I caught the tail end of the
old style just as I was getting into this music.

I was ok with trance and that first Oakenfold mix until EVERYBODY started
copying it. Radio, clubs, it was just everywhere and overwhelming. You
couldn't throw a rock without hitting another person who claimed to be a
"rave" DJ. In my area, all these trance DJs moved in overnight and claimed
to have exclusive rights to electronic dance. Nevermind that there were a
whole host of people doing all sorts of things that benefited everyone
before that point. Once the trance bubble burst, those of us who were left
got stuck holding the bag and having to explain all the nonesense that the
new crowd of trance people brought in with them.

I'm also a bit sour about being herded into the mainstream conception of
electronic dance music. People immediately associated "techno" (and
therefore me) with "trance". I got stuck (and still to this day) having to
answer to friends and others commenting "you still play that stuff? I hate
progressive!"

I just grew to associate trance with those people who only know of that one
end of the spectrum. It's not so much "trance" the music itself, per se,
that bothers me. It's all these connotaions associated with it.

I'll readily admit that I like trance music - of the variety that came out
on the Volume compilation sets. There are quite a few Detroit artists on
those. Check out these track listings:

but this is trance before the "Great Divide" that got its start in the
early 90s and by 94-95 was well on its way to pushing trance and techno
apart.
I'd like to know - what was the first "Trance" record that put the massive
build-ups and breakdowns on their way to the history books of dance music?

I know Richie Hawtin and Speedy J were lumped in the trance music very
early on - I'd say that they are two of the only producers that most techno
and trance fans can agree on.
They sure knew how to abuse the 808/909 drum rolls as well.
Everyone goes on about Oakenfold but i put more blame on Paul Van Dyk and
Sven Väth and what was going on in Germany and Goa, India for the way that
trance became "progressive house/trance".

I'd suggest "Hardtrance Acperience" by Hardfloor as the first
record that made some producers think, "I've got to have that
sort of snare roll in every track I make!"

I'm sure it wasn't the first track to employ that sort of
technique, but it really did put the big-breakdown'n'snare-
roll on the map, and by the time of tracks like "Access" and
"Higher State Of Consciousness" hit, the divide was clearly
established. Soon after that you started getting subgenres
of trance, and by that time the rift between trance and
techno was irreparable.

Robotman's "Do Da Do" had a huge Hardfloor-style breakdown
and buildup in it, come to think of it. But that was after
"Hardtrance Acperience" IIRC...

Yes! That's the best idea. How long did they plan the first event? They
should take the same, if not more, amount of time to plan the next
festival. If this event is that important then shouldn't the quality of

RE: (313) No Movement 2005?

2005-01-28 Thread Brendan Nelson

Brendan (aka the Friday afternoon snare roll historian)

p.s. they're playing "Rez" by Underworld here in the office
right now, appropriately enough...

Re: (313) No Movement 2005?

2005-01-28 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I'll readily admit that I like trance music - of the variety that came out
on the Volume compilation sets. There are quite a few Detroit artists on
those. Check out these track listings:
http://www.discogs.com/release/88553
http://www.discogs.com/release/69311
http://www.discogs.com/release/17822
http://www.discogs.com/release/17824
http://www.discogs.com/release/17825
http://www.discogs.com/release/17826

but this is trance before the "Great Divide" that got its start in the
early 90s and by 94-95 was well on its way to pushing trance and techno

Everyone goes on about Oakenfold but i put more blame on Paul Van Dyk and
Sven Väth and what was going on in Germany and Goa, India for the way that
trance became "progressive house/trance".

oh wait...are we 313ers still supposed to hate Trance? oops! I forgot that
"trance" was supposed to be taboo. a few weeks ago I was at a Dollar Store
and as I was checking out there was a CD display near the register. as I
spun through the terrible selection I came across a double CD compilation
on
Rising High Records called "The Secret Life of Trance". it included tracks
by Timo Mass and Jam & Spoon and it was only one dollar...so I bought it. I
figured it would be good for a laugh or two. so while cleaning house the
other day I decided to put it on and give it a listen before throwing it
away, but ended up listening to it straight through. it's actually quite
good! (?) I apologize, guys. it was an accident and it only happened once.
I
swear! I feel so dirty. but at least it wasnt "electro clash"! :)

oh and regarding movement: maybe it's time to take it off of life support?
it's already made history and has it's place in our hearts forever. why not
just let it go? Keeping a "version" of it alive artificially or in an
altered form would do nothing but tarnish the fond memories of what it once
was. Have you ever had your favorite danceclub/party/event outlive it's
natural lifespan? it gets pretty sad at the end. examples: Lollaplooza?
Motor Lounge? The Limelight? Ministry Of Sound?

DEMF: Do Not Resuscitate

I have nothing against the DEMF/Movement festival or it's organizers. I
performed at the very first (where I was paid quite handsomely) and what
may
turn out to be the very last one (where I performed for absolutely free)
and
would gladly do it again if they needed me to, but if the only way to keep
it going is to make it an "Area One" monster rock show, then it's time to
let it rest in peace and take it's rightful place as a part of the history
of Detroit Techno.

I really wouldn't mind if they skip a year and take an WHOLE year to
develop a really special event. Four months is barely enough time to
organize a party much less an festival.

i agree. you can't move the festival, it's part of detroit. it's just
another festival anywhere else.

Wow!

David arent you happy enough to have Mills, Mike Banks living on your
continent. Not to mention all the shows headlining detroit/american
artists that are constantly rotating through Europe. Mn, do we
really have to take one of the last formidable, and sizable electronic
detroit/american events left here and move it too. I personally dont
have the money to be galivanting to Europe and back. This is one thing

Well I do have a funny Pete Tong story...

I once ripped off his Essential Selection artwork for an advert for a
video game, my client got a very angry call from his lawyers and I had
to attend a conference call with the client/lawyers - I could hear Pete
in the background. So they kick off with "Who do you think you are?"
"Ripping off a brand" "Explotation" "Do I know who Pete Tong is"

To which I replied "I have no idea who Pete Tong is, can you please
explain who he is and what he does because I've never heard of him"

SILENCE

I smiled all the way home.
