Though Hawtin did make some claim to the name as anyone who remembers the
looped sample on his FUSE Technotropic 12 on Plus 8 will remember, it went
something like 'and now ladies and gentlemen ri-ri-ri-ri-ri-richie rich' x 20.

Another great Richie Rich is of course the characters played by Crazy ole Rik
Mayall in both the Filthy Rich and Catflap and Bottom TV shows. Not sure if
there's a connection to Hawtin, Third Bass or Ralph Rossario there though.

BTW Ralphi Rosario did not work with Richie Rich, there was a bootleg mix
called You Used to Salsa which mixed Richie Rich's "Salsa House" with Ralphi
Rosario's "You Used to Hold Me", which the record company (FFRR) eventually
legally released...

Graylock - C.T.M rmxs - EC:

Much like the early description the long player on here simply bangs along for
about 6 mins or so, with some 909 snare clap, and dark bass, break down then, in
your face comes a nicely abrasive synthline, and some snappy additions to the
already dark bassline, more claps, then it gets all mellow like near the end.
Rachmad mix basically tears apart the long player, salvaging all the good parts
and looping it to death.

Ryan,
Roll back to 96? Not bloody likely. Do you remember what you played in
'96? I do. The idea that I was pushing towards is the style of music. In no
way would I state that someone should go back 4 years. Furthermore I heard
Ritchie play great minimal last year, and he still does it at the end of his
sets. On Decks Fx & 909, my favourite part is when he breaks it down to Stewart
Walker, Savvaas Yaatis, Heiko Laux, Maurizio etc. I'm not implying that he go
backwards at all. I simply enjoy another side of Ritchie, one that some of us
really miss seeing.

Was this a track that starts out tribal-ish house and progesses into a long

Re: [313] Richie Rich

2000-06-05 Thread Todd Smith
I have to agree with Peter, Ritchie has played better sets. I personally felt
that after seeing Mr Hawtin for the fourth time on his DF9 tour that this is
quite possibly what I would expect if I were at a rock concert; preprogrammed,
uninspired & clinical, just another show. This is the last time I will see
Hawtin for a while now. When we had him play for us back in September last
year in Pittsburgh (just b4 DF9 came out) I was amazed at what he was doing.
Then I heard the cd. It was pretty much the exact same set as Pittsburgh!
Then off to the cd release party, another boring straight up techno set, 25
minutes of house at the end with the big 909 rollup to end it all off. The
media guys dig it up, but personally I got more out of Theorem that night (you
were great Dale!) than Ritchie. Since then everytime I've seen Ritchie its
been the same shit. I just keep coming back and hoping that he'll go back and
play some of the deep stuff that he's played before. Parties like Minimal
(back in 96) and the first few Ritual parties (#1, and #4) were the best sets
I've ever heard Ritchie play, and moreover were the ones that kept me on my
toes and working hard on my own shit. Oh yeah last thing, there was one
bassline in Ritchie's set (only one I heard though I left at 11), it was the
DK remix on drumcode 20. Only thing in the whole set that even made me nod my
head.

Don't let that mix-CD put you off. Richie is quite diverse. I had the same
feeling when I saw him this year at Two Tribes in Melbourne with Carola and
Gaetek (whom he enjoyed afterwards since he stayed) - it was the first time
I had experienced his DJing. I just wasn't feeling Richie at all. To be
honest, I thought, how is it that people rave about this guy, he is all
technique, there's no expression, he's a techno android. But I think he was
playing to a big, young crowd who were just there for bangin' stuff. Maybe
in a smaller venue. I wandered off to check out David Morales and Roger
Sanchez in the end and felt a little heretical for it, then came back. But I
really like the guy's outlook, he is very interesting in his conceptualism,
and his later Plastikman work is quite soulful, or interestingly anti-soul
(not sure which).

I felt exactly the same way when he played for four hours in Iowa City.
Unfortunately I missed him @ DEMF, although I guess I didn't miss much??? I
posted this about Adam Beyer after seeing T1000 and Hawtin here, but it's
mostly about Hawtin:

>>> this whole discussion reminds me of how I felt about Hawtin and
DJ-T1000 when I saw them in Iowa City on separate occasions this spring. I
haven't heard Beyer spin, but hear he's very good. However, if it's anything
like Hawtin (who is undeniably a technical master), I think I would have the
same longing for some kind of melody and drum loops that last more than a
bar. As I understand it, this is typical of the European techno DJing style.
I don't even feel motivated to dance once the drone sets in. Since seeing
Alan spin, I've read his posts with a sense of awe, in that he tends to be
the designated advocate for beating techno sets, but his performance here
was as funky as any I've heard (I think he clarifies his feelings on this
below). He plays music with a funk core, but still tends to have aggressive
beats. I did not get the same feeling from Hawtin at all. While I can marvel
at what he doing with the raw materials, I don't particularly care for them.
Seeing him spin was very cerebral for me, but I don't suspect this would be
true for a non-DJ, or someone who doesn't know what it takes to create
flawlessly at that speed. I think I have a pretty unusual feeling about
this, because it's not often that beats will make me dance. I have to be
into the music on some mental level before my body will respond. However, I
have a purely artistic interest in watching and listening to someone beat
records I don't care for, and tend to enjoy this without dancing. Weird?<<<

yes, I agree. I wasn't into richie's set either. He played in total 3
tracks that got my head bobbin' and they were songs that I've heard many
times...vainquer, 69 and vapourspace. I thought out of respect they would
let dmay play last. The crowd was into it nontheless, but I think richie
would have impressed me and others more if he played music with melodies
and deeper songs that were more than just 2 bar loops which he pretty much
played. Taking nothing away from richie, I've heard rich play great house
music for 3 hours with unreal acid tracks and techno by armando, mike dunn
and phuture. listen to some of those archives...people like shake, theo
parrish, buzz goree, and fannon flowers played more interesting sets.
