Re: Antwort: Re: GPFS 4.1 on windows and TSM Backup

2015-02-02 Thread Christian Svensson
I Just solve this issue for another customer.

Search for gpfs.dll on your Windows Server.
Search for GPFS.DLL in your Trace File you created that Stefan talking about.

Verify if the path is the same, if not. Then just copy that file from the path
you find in your DOS windows and copy to the path that the trace file tells you.

Run the Backup again, and it should work again.

Hello Stefan,
in your information I can't see anything wrong and the error messages are
unspecific.
So I think the best way to proceed is a PMR.
Having a service trace from the failed backup of one file will help with the
analysis, like "dsmc inc

Re: Backing up Isilons with TSM

2014-11-25 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
We backing up a couple of PB of Isilon daily that generates a couple of 100GB
per day of new data.
We are backing up over NFS but it is very bad solution, and it takes around 24
hours before the Isilon and TSM have identify all new files.

There is a undocumented APIs so you can identify all change files in the Isilon
so you can run a selective backup, but we had a hard time to get hold of them
from EMC because they are not as open as IBM is.

Another way that is not recommended is to use NDMP, LOL good luck with that if
you don't want to spend millions of $$$.

What I try to do now instead is either replace the EMC Isilon with IBM ESS
instead that is much better or try implement GPFS on top of the Isilon so we
get a much better backup functionality. But that is nothing IBM have tried to
get working.

We currently have snapshots enabled on our NetApp, but I was wondering whether
it is realistic to completely depend on NetApp SnapVault for backup of the data

anyone tried this? Is it reliable to depend on SnapVault only, what are the

TSM scheduler was installed on both nodes of the cluster, made a cluster
resource, registry key set as per instructions in the TDP for SQL 6.4 user
guide.

Then the nodes were de-registered from TSM.
Now we have to put them back (long story, don't ask).
Nobody knows what the TSM password was, of course.

So I reset the password on the TSM server end.
Now trying to reset it on the nodes, with no success.
I tried using the client setup wizard to change the password on the client end;
I tried running dsmc sched on the client end and responding to the prompt, from
both the active and passive side.
But the password doesn't get changed, and authentication with the server still
fails with "scheduler needs to prompt for password" when we bring the resource
online in cluster manager.

Not sure if I'm suffering from an authority issue, or a clustering issue.
To reset the scheduler password, do I have to first make the scheduler service
NOT a cluster resource again?

Thanks for any insight...

Windows BA Client Question

2013-09-05 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
I'm sending out to you all to understand 2 questions that I have and why the BA
Client works the way it does?

I have a Windows Server 2003/2008 and 2012 servers that I want to backup with
TSM BA Client 6.3 and 6.4.
Because of old tradition are we using TSM Client Acceptor to run the TSM Client
Scheduler services. And in this case do we want the Client Scheduler to polling
their next backup every 4 hour.
But what I can see is that, every time when the Client Scheduler want to query
it's backup, TSM create minimum 4 new Windows Application Information Events
that TSM Client Scheduler has started/ended and also started Microsoft Volume
Shadow Copy Services.
Is it any way I can disable this events to been created at all? I did created
my TSM Client Schedules with switch Eventlogging:NO and that didn't help.
I want to know if it is possible to disable them at all or if this is a feature
that I need to leave with?

My second question is related to the same clients, but when I run "Query
Inclexcl" on my Clients, then can I see a summary of what TSM Server/dsm.opt
and Operating System want to include and exclude.
And most of the Operating Systems exclusions are located under
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup.
But under that registry directory can't I find all Operating System excludes,
as an example in my case does "Query Inclexcl" show following Exlcude

Exclude D:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\Data\MyDatabase.mdf
Exclude E:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\Data\MyDatabase.ldf

So my question is, where does the TSM Backup-Archive Client find does
exclusions?

Turn of TSM DNSLOOK up on the server.
But as all other say. Trace the network and try with static routes in the OS

Sounds like it a network config issue. We saw this with machines with 2-nics
and when it was trying to resolve the DNS name, it would try going through the
wrong gateway and give up and then try the right connection/path.

Because you can't work with the data in mean will on the target server, and TSM

SV: ANR2728E Replication problem

2013-02-15 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
I have 2 TSM Server based on Windows Server 2008 R2 and running TSM Server
version 6.3.3.0

For a wild ago did I do a Backup/Restore of my TSM Database on my source TSM
Server because we want to move the database from disk to Fusion I/O.
But since then can't TSM replicate the data between the 2 sites anymore.

It seems like the replicated nodes have been change to a mode between Receive
and Sync mode.
But when I try to update the nodes, to change them back to Receive mode do I
get an error message that tells me REPLMODE=RECEIVE is an invalid option. Also
if I try to change to Replmode=SYNCRECEIVE.

But if I only change the target nodes to REPLSTATE=ENABLE do I get following
error.
ANR2728E REPLICATE NODE: Node XX cannot be replicated because it is not in
the SEND or SENDSYNC mode.

If I update the node from REPLSTATE=ENABLE to DISABLE on the target site. I got
following error instead.
ANR1902W Node on server TSMTARGET is not enabled for replication. It
will not be replicated.
And I got the same problem if I update the source node with only
Replstate=Enable.

My question, how do I change back the nodes to SEND/RECEIVE mode without to
delete all data on target server and let Replication to recreate all nodes from
scratch?

SV: Vol size discrepency for SnapMirror2Tape of NetApp

2013-02-06 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Steve,
Sorry for a late answer to your question.
Here is your answer to your question.

bcfiler1a> df -S vol_xenbackup1
Filesystemused total-saved%total-saved
deduplicated%deduplicatedcompressed%compressed
/vol/vol_xenbackup1/ 162628316 188334552 54%
188334552 54% 0 0%

If you take Total-Save + Deduplicated value then do you got the amount of data
that NetApp SnapMirror and TSM should backup.
And when I count does number together do I get a total backup amount of approx.
350GB.

PS: Sorry to tell you, NetApp is not a good investment if you want to be able
to restore the data.

Thanks

Have you inserted the CAS information to the DP?
Can you restore the database to an Exchange DR Database without any problem and
export the mailbox from that database?

Also if you look for information how to show that Exchange find your Activity

One last point. If this is a DAG Cluster, upgrade your client to 6.4. Then do
you have full DAG functionality that makes your backup and restore easier.

All,

Prior to deploying Exchange 2010 we are trying to get TDP for Exchange to work

We can successfully snap to tape but when we try to restore a mailbox (original
location, alternate location, or pst) the operation fails with these errors:

An Active Directory error 0x51 occurred when trying to check the suitability of
server 'domain-controller'. Error: 'Active directory response: The LDAP server

During the operation I can see an established LDAP connection to the domain

SV: GPFS & TSM

2013-02-04 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Rich,
We have three sites with GPFS and where two of them are we backing up the
filesystem with mmbackup.
It seems to be OK but we had an issue where GPFS TSM database got corrupted
because of strange filenames in the Filesystem where even Linux couldn't read
the files.
But on top of that does mmbackup works fine for us.
But make sure you design your GPFS Filesystem correct. We have all meta data on
SSD disks and that makes a hugest different in performance when we backup the
data.
But we have over 35 million object in one partition and that could really heavy
when we run policy based backup.

It appears you did not run the cmdlet with the flags I requested.

More specifically, you *must* add the "-Status" flag, otherwise you won't get
the actual BackupInProgress setting.

Try this:

Hi Christian,

One thing to check is the Exchange database "BackupInProgress" flag.
Data Protection for Exchange utilizes this flag to know whether a backup is
already in progress. I know you said there wasn't, but if the Exchange Server
thinks there is, it won't allow another to start.

To check this, run this cmdlet:

Get-MailboxDatabase -Status

check the "BackupInProgress" flag.

BTW... the trace you included is normal and not helpful for this problem. You
would need to include the part of the trace that runs the "Get-MailboxDatabase"
cmdlet.

Thanks,

SV: Exchange 2010 and Error code ACN5073E and ACN6068I

2013-01-16 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi all,
I have a strange situations I try to understand.
We have 2 x Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 DAG clusters and we have the same
issue on both of them.
We are running TSM Client Version 6.4.0.0 and TSM for Exchange 6.4.0.0 with TSM
Server 6.3.3.0 because of we want to get hold of the new DAG Node functionality.

When we try to backup our DAG databases (Active or Passive) we got a strange
issue.
In the new TDP MMC GUI (FCM) does TSM tell us error code ACN5073E None of the
storage groups entered are in a state to be backed up.
But tdpexc.log tell us error code ACN6068I is being backed up by a
different server - skipping.

When I verify in TSM no one are backing up any databases at the moment so TSM
are totally quite.
I go in to each DAG Server and verify that TSM/FCM or any other products are
active, and I also run DISKSHADOW to verify so VSS are not holding any
snapshots.

I have also try to unmounts the databases and remount them with no success.

I have also verify that all VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS are active that explains in
following MS link.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb204080%28EXCHG.140%29.aspx

When I run a trace on the TDPEXECC command then does it match following IBM
link but accept that our servername are in upper case instead of lower case.
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IC86345

But I look in the trace file and it also complain on a registry key

SV: Help with NDMP dump & diff expiration

2013-01-02 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Andy,
Make sure you have a budget for tapes. Our old NetApp solution was eating
tapes. Approx 100 LTO-4/LTO-5 a week.
And if you are going to save the Full Backup X number of weeks and then keep
diff backups for Z numbers of days. Then do you need to create multiple full
backups. One full backup with X Weeks Management Class and another full backup
with Z days Management Class that you also can continue with Diff backups.

Another issue is that if you are going to backup to Disk then will NDMP
allocate the size of the partition and not the amount of data to backup. If you
have a small diskpool, then will NDMP go direct to next storage pool.
And it is not recommended to backup to Virtual Tape Pool where TSM create
virtual tapes on another TSM Server. Try to backup direct between your NAS and
to Tape over the SAN.
Make sure you also create a "large" TOCPool. Our TOC pool on NetApp is now over
500GB large.
Also when you load the TOC to restore, does your TSM Database Size need to be
large enough temporary to contain the entire TOC.

This is a couple of tips. One thing I never tried is the new SnapDiff function
if that now works for vFilers. I think Wanda has more info about this.

Christian Svensson

Another option, the one we use, is to use the NAS to snap a copy and keep that
snap for some number of days and only make full dumps once a week.

Hi,

I once raised an RFE for managing diffs separately from the fulls.
Unfortunately the answer is NO.

workaround: use multiple nodenames and make fulls on both nodenames and diffs
only with one yes a pita and a waste of tapes... if only IBM could think of
something better ;-)

SV: 6.1.5.200 --> 6.2/6.3 Linux server upgrade

2012-12-27 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Zoltan,
You should open a PMR before you start with this upgrade.
The reason is that the 6.1 is based on DB2 9.5 and to get all functions in
6.2/6.3 then do you need to run a couple of DB2 commands to convert all tables
to 9.7 format.

But on top of that did everything work fine for me on all 3 servers we had when
we upgraded from 6.1 to .6.2.1.0 and now are we upgrading from 6.2.4 to 6.3.3
without any issue. My last one will be upgraded today.

Anybody performed such an upgrade by simply installing 6.2.4 (or 6.3) and
letting the automatic upgrade process take place and the upgrade going off
without a hitch? Any gotchas? Anything I should prepare ahead for?

IMO, 6.1 has reached the end of the road and I would like to move forward,
preferably without a complete rebuild (especially since ALL 2013 funding
requests for TSM have been shot-down/nixed) Unfortunately, my lone 6.1 server
is pretty critical. Used to be a library manager but I was able to move that
to another server, so that is one less headache.

I had a similar problem and I had to unregister and reregister the vCenter
plugin. On a windows server you can do so by running the script:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common
Files\Tivoli\TDPVMware\VMwarePlugin\unregister_vcenter.cmd

usage: unregister_vcenter.cmd

AND

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common

register_vcenter.cmd

I hope that this helps!

Can you also run "ls -l" on does files under

My guess is that you maybe need to set your excludement between two

Hi Wanda,

Proxy node not solve your issue because the filespace will contain

Backing up two Exchange 2010 servers with the 6.3 TDP for Exchange, TSM 6.2.3
server on Windows.
There are 6 mail data bases. Half the mailboxdb's are active, half passive on
each server.

I installed the TDP on each server, and we specify /EXCLUDEDAGACTIVE so that
only the passive copies are backed up.

What I've noticed is that over time, these 2 servers have taken up much more
space on the TSM server than I expected.
What has happened is that the active mailboxdb's have switched back and forth
between the servers.
Over time, I've gotten copies of all 6 mailboxdb's backed up under each node
name.
And I assume that whatever the Exchange admins are doing will continue.

Would it make sense to set up a proxy relationship so that both the Exchange
TDPs are backing up the mailboxdb's to the same node name?
That would cut back my TSM server storage when the mailboxdb's flop around.

But the TDP book says for restores:

The restore operation must be run on the node where the backup was created.

I don't know if in this case "node" just refers to the TSM nodename, or if
there is something about Exchange itself so that a restore from a proxied name
doesn't work? Is proxied a proper verb?

Anybody else run into this?

I have a situations were the Backup Admins get to many restore request everyday

All suggestions are more then welcome.

There are all kinds of measures involved in setting up a TSM server; processor,

But, I'm curious about how many nodes some of you have on your TSM servers?

I'm in a Windows environment, and have been tasked with "consolidating".

Also, about how much memory is on those systems.

NDMP Restore

2012-09-24 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Everyone,
I hope the summer has been great for you all.

We are looking now to remove a customers all NetApp and replace it with much
better storage for other vendor.
But we have a situation that we need to keep the backup for does NetApp for 6
month - 1 year, but instead of keeping all of them and cost a lot of $$$, are
we thinking of to only keep one NetApp and not all of them.

My question to you all are if someone have test to restore one NetApp NDMP
dumps to another NetApps with a different hostname and OS Level.

Source NetApp have version 7.x and 8.x and the one we keeping will have OS
level 8.0.1.
TSM Server Version will be 6.2 or 6.3 depending on what the requirement will be.

Thanks in advance

ANS1705E with WMI Writer

2012-08-06 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi their,
I hope to find some light over here.

I got a couple of servers that has the same problem. All of them are Windows
Server 2003 32-bits with SP2 and running TSM Client 6.2.3.1.

When I try to backup System State do I get following error ANS1705E System
Writers 'system writer' 'WMI Writer' do not exist, following by many ANS1417W
that are created by the first error.

When I searching on the web do I found a couple of ideas to recreate/modify a
couple of registry values/catalogs, but before I start with try-n-error method
do I find out what's really going on and when I run the WMIDiag tool from
Microsoft do I got following error.

35718 10:04:07 (0) ** - Root/CIMv2, InstancesOf, 'Win32_ComputerSystem' did not
return any instance while AT LEAST 1 instance is expected.
35719 10:04:07 (0) ** MOF Registration: ''

When I search on that error do I get 0 results that are similar.

So if you have any ideas how to solve this problem should I be glad to get that
information.

Thanks
Christian

I'm working on a 6.3.1 install and have a custom report built, but I'd like
to use the Cognos Burst feature to properly distribute a report to individuals.

This isn't ready for production use, just trying to get setup to replace our
5.5 Operational Reports.

Burst, as I understand it, requires a table in the database (DB2-WAREHOUS) that
is used by the burst feature.

I've had a PMR open on the issue and just learned that "...adding a new table
would be a license violation. You can create custom reports, but only using the
existing tables. This ensures compatibility with future upgrades."

SV: TSM 6.3 NAS Filer backup stg issues

2012-04-25 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Steve,
Tell the NetApp people to run following commands
You most look in the NDMP Debug log to find the key for your issue.

On the NetApp can you run

>ndmpd debug 50

That will probably generate a message to you how you enable debug in 8.1RC2. I
Think NetApp change how to enable Debug mode in OnTap 8.1.
If I don't remember wrong was the new commands

Options ndmpd.debug.enable on
Options ndmpd.debug.mode 50

But please see the OnTap command line information you get when you run ndmpd
debug command.

After running a backup stg you will see more info in the ndmpd logfiles that
you can find on \\vfiler\c$\etc\logs\???\ndmpd?.log
And I can guess you will see a media error problem in their.

Hi All

I've got a problem with running backup stg of nas filer NDMP backups.

I have a TSM 6.3.1 server on RHEL 5.7 X86_64, an N-Series filer at Data On-Tap
8.1RC2 and A shared TS3310 library with LTO5 drives. Actually I have two setups
exactly the same in different cities, except one has more data and 3 drives and
the other has less data and two drives.

NDMP backups are configured to write directly to tape and seem to work fine.
The backup completes cleanly if slowly, and the limited restores I have done
worked once I went to 6.3.1.

But, I want an offsite copy, and so run backup stg against the NAS primary tape
pool. This is consistently failing - but only on certain filer volumes. On the
first filer with the problem it seems to copy correctly on volumes that are
cifs shared, but fail on volumes that are used by FC, at least I thought that
was the difference. On the second filer there are no FC volumes, but somehow
those copies are failing too.

TSM support points at the filer people because the error is a bad return code
from an operation that is handed off to the filer. I have been working with
N-series hardware support on this for a month and only now realize that they
have co concept of what the problem is. they thought backup stg produced an
NDMP backup.

Has any one else seen this problem? Does anyone on the list know how to get
traction on these sorts of issues from Nseries hardware support ?

Ämne: Best disk layout for new TSM setup with the hardware I got, please advise

Hi,

I am pretty new to TSM and have the task of installing a new setup, I read
a lot about the TSM server installation and did some tests in a VMware
setup.

The question I have is this, I have a HP server with 10 internal SAS disks
on a raidcontroller that does raid1/raid5/raid10 that will become our TSM
server.
I am thinking a 4 disk raid 5 for the diskpool will be OK, but what do I do
for metadata?

Do I make one big raid 10 for logging and db files, do I split this up?
I am not sure if 2 or 3 seperate raid sets will be better than one big one,
and if I do split, do I place the activity log / archive log on the same
disk (different fs) and the db on a seperate set?

So these are my options I guess;

a)
1 - raid 1 - OS+archive log (2d)
2 - raid 1 - active log (2d)
3 - raid 1 - db (2d)
4 - raid 5 - diskpool (4d)

b)
1 - raid 10 - OS+archive log +active log (4d)
2 - raid 1 - db (2d) -
4 - raid 5 - diskpool (4d)

c)
1 - raid 10 - OS+archive log + active log + db (6d)
2 - raid 5 - diskpool (4d)

I think option B might be the best option but I am not sure about the 2
disks for the TSM db, that might be a huge bottleneck?
No dedupe on this TSM server so DB size should be ok.

Thank you, Rick

After some investigation I found that TSM can only use one Process (1 drive)
per node or one process per collocation group.
This is only when you are using Random disk. If you want to use multiple drives
you need to change from random disk to sequeneal disk.

Since your disk pool is much smaller than what you are backing up, plus you
have plenty of tape drives, it doesn't make much sense to send those 3 large
filespaces to the diskpool.

Create a new management class, send each of those 3 filespaces directly to the
tape drives, bypassing the disk pool.

Hi,

I have to backup large data ~ 300TB and have small DISK POOL SIZE 500GB. I have
3 filespaces, backing up on single node. I am triggering multiple dsmc,
dividing the filespace on directories. I have 15 E06 Tape drives and can
allocate 5 drives for this backup.

If I run multiple dsmc sessions the, server starts only one migration process
and one tape mount.
As per ADMIN GUIDE the Migration for Random Access is "Performed by node.
Migration from random-access pools can use multiple processes."

My Question:
1. On Random Access pools multiple migration sessions can be generated, only if
we backup on multiple nodes ? Is my understanding correct or there is any way
to increase the number of tape mounts ?

2. The only way to speed up with current resources is to backup to File device
class, so that I can have multiple tape mounts?

3. Any inputs to speed up this backup?

Server and client both are on Linux, running TSM version 6.2.2

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Amit

Obviously, Linux systems can mount CIFS shares, but does anyone have the
SNAPDIFF option working? I keep getting:

It is too! The message kind of implies that CIFS is OK on Linux.

 Hi,
We just upgrade a customer from one library to another library.
With the new library did the customer also buy approx 2000 new LTO-5 Tapes.

But now when we are labeling them in TSM it takes forever to run label libvol.
Sure it runs automatic without our help, but still. We have 5 LTO-5 empty tape
drives that could be used for labeling at the same time, but the process only
using 1 drive at the time.

I just wonder if anyone else out their have an idea for next time how we label

Hi Andy,
If you don't wanna run NDMP, I suggest that you maybe build a GPFS cluster and
only used Isilon as dummy storage.
In that case can you build much larger filesystem then Isilon can do and you
have much faster and better backup solutions.

I know that it could be waste of hardware and money but depend on how much data
and retention period. But you will probably save money in the end if you going
to have a lot of data and need to save it for more then 6+ month.

Admin Center is even worse. It won't install at all. It just gives me a

problem is, there are no log files.

Ämne: intermittent errors on -snapdiff backups

Customer has a Netapp; trying to implement -snapdiff backups on several large
shares.
Having intermittent failures that make no sense to me.
Running the backup with:

dsmc -snapdiff -optfile=blah.opt

blah.opt contains:
..
domain /filer/sharepath1/filer/sharepath2 etc

We can get the first backup with -snapdiff, and usually the second.
Then at some point, we start getting

ANS2831E Incremental by snapshot difference
cannot be performed on 'volume-name' as
it is not a NetApp NFS or CIFS volume.

Obviously it IS a NetApp volume as we get one or more snapdiff backups before
the problem starts.
(And we can log in to the filer with the same credentials, and we can map a
drive letter to the share.)
I'm not sure whether this is a NetApp issue or a Windows/CIFS/network issue
that makes -snapdiff lose its brains.

Anybody seen this behavior before?
Any suggestions where to look next?
Thanks!

I need to make it so that the generic service is part of the SQL resource

Ämne: Question concerning large filepools on HP EVA

Hi

We have a customer running TSM with a large (+130TB) HP EVA 64000 as a large
filepool (multi-directory). After a few months, they got problems with disks
breaking down in the EVA box, ending up having raidarrays in almost a constant
state of rebuild. After talking to HP, the advice they got was to try to reduce
the load on the box since it shouldnt be used more than 30% of the time during
24 hours.

Initially, the customer used deduplication on the box which probably put even
more stress on it, but this is now turned off. The problem still exists however.

Has anyone else had issues with large diskboxes in combination with file device
pools? According to HP, this is due to the high amount of I/O that TSM
produces, but I've seen non-SATA boxes handle alot more I/O than this. So the
question is, is it because of the use of SATA drives, or is this a problem with
just this model/box?

The box is equipped with 1TB HP labeled S-ATA disks and the customer has a
small SAS-based diskbox to handle daily backups and then migrates to the HP EVA
box. Data is then backed up to a remote LTO-based tape library.

Another problem related to the same pool is that file device volumes that has
been reclaimed (0.0% usage) is not returned as scratch and deleted, but is held
within the storage pool as a volume with 0.0% usage. Anyone know of any related
issues with file device volumes not being deleted?

Customer is at v6.2 on RedHat Enterprise Linux, and we've checked permissions
on both directories and files of the file device volumes, aswell as the TSM
activity log, but cannot see any relevant issues.

for you so you can do a VPN connection to that environment and play around on
your own.

When I did all the BMR sales in the past for IBM did I use does centers all the
time.
If he can't organize it. Tell the IBM rep to contact me so can I give him
contact details to be able to provide a PoT for you.
If that is impossible for him, he can always talk to Tivoli Sales Enablement
Team (Jarrett, Tricia, Cyrus, Rich) and the can provide a PoT for you.

Hello,

Would someone please tell me if there is a TSM for VE demo site that someone on
our team could log onto to get a feel for how it works? We are looking for a
better/easier way to back up the servers in our virtual environments, but would
like to have a hands-on type session, if possible, before making a purchase.

Our IBM Tivoli Sales Rep has been unable to get this information for us and I

SV: Many DB Backups

2011-10-24 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Richard,
You probably have problem with the Active/Archive Log size.

Do you have a lot of activity going on?
Maybe the Archive log partition size are to small for your environment or the
Active Log are to small?

Another comment issue is that you maybe put one of the DB/Active Log/Archive
Log on the same File system partition.

Hi All,

After upgrading a TSM server from 5.5.4.3 to 6.2.2.30 we see that DB Backups

What can be causing this (no dedup running), and how can we stop this?

2011-10-12 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Del,
This ends up with that the DBA have turn on something called AUTO_CLOSE to
TRUE, if we change it to FALES TSM for DB works fine.

When I read this artical
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckwoody/archive/2009/06/24/sql-server-best-practices-autoclose-should-be-off.aspx
I think this could be a config that many DBAs are using for small applications.

Why can't TSM for DB handle this parameter?

SV: Reuse Delay

2011-10-04 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Chad,
If you have enough scratch tapes to use reuse delay on Primary Pool it will
save you time if a DB corruption happened.

But maybe you should have different reuse delay values on Copypool and primary
pool?
Let's say you only have 1-2 days on Primary Pool in case of the DB need to be
recovered to early morning and longer retention on Copypool if a disaster
happened.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening fellow TSM Adminers,

I have a question to pose to the group about the Reuse Delay parameter and what
is the best way to utilize or not utilize it on your storage pools. I have
come across two different schools of thought on this subject and before I do
something rash and change a config setting, that might regret changing later, I
thought I would pose the question to the group.

One school of thought on this subject is to keep the reuse delay parameter of
your primary pool set to zero days while setting the reuse delay parameter to 5
on your copy pools. The idea behind this being that even if you do need to
restore your database to an older version the file references that are no
longer available in your primary pool will still be available in your copy pool
while letting you reuse volumes in your primary pools sooner.

The second school of thought is that the reuse delay on your primary pool and
your copy pool should both be the same giving you the greatest chance to cover
your posterior in the event of a database meltdown since you will have two
copies of the files that an older database version might reference.

With all this in mind, I just wanted to see what method other TSM Admins
thoughts about this are and what they are using in their environments.

Thanks,
Chad Harris

TDP SQL reports back ACO5422E

2011-09-27 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
I was hope to find some light here at the forum.
I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 with a MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise installed.
I have installed TSM BA Client 6.2.3.0 and TSM for MSSQL 5.5.5.1 and the TSM
Server version is 6.2.3.0

But when I try to run a backup of our MS SQL Server via GUI does a got a ! sign
on a couple of databases (only 5 of 50 db).
When I try to backup does databases I got an error "ACO5422E Recived the
following from the MS SQL Server: Specified cast is not valid. (HRRESULT:
0x80004002)"
But when I try to backup the databases that doesn't have any marks on them it
works OK.

I have look around on the web and found following artical but none of them
working for us.

http://adsm.org/forum/showthread.php?24035-Some-database-of-MS-SQL-Server-can-t-be-backed-up-using-TDP-for-database

http://adsm.org/forum/showthread.php?23467-How-can-I-exclude-a-single-database-from-a-TDP-MSSQL-backup

We have also try to create a dedicated backup account in SQL that has full
access to everything but that has the same issue if I try to use "Integrated"
account option in TSM for DB.

I have also involved some DBAs and they can dump the database to a flat file
without any issue. I have also ask them to compare the databases that works and
not working. But I haven't heard anything back yet.

Thanks in advanced for your help and suggestions that maybe solve this issue.

Hi Kamran,
Ideas to answer to your 2nd question.

- Change Mail Server Software from Exchange to Lotus Domino Instead and you
will have much better Restore performance and functionality then M$ will never

- Change to TSM FastBack or use FlashCopy Manager for Exchange

- Most comment solutions are to use much smaller DAGs in Exchange so you only

Thanks Christian..
I solved 24 hours in arrears by adjusting the collection and warehouse
intervals to more frequent occurrence. Collecting at 15 minutes and
warehousing at 1 hour.

Your suggestion to go directly to the TSM db2 is good, ALL of the data is there
and timely. We sometimes use the node contact name, which doesn't seem to
appear in the WAREHOUS schema.

I found a couple of errors in the BIRT rtp library as delivered on the TSM 6
package. It wasn't correctly identifying failed schedules on the summary chart
and node listing. Solved the chart by editing the SchedulesSummary Data Set.
Similar edit on the SchedulesMissed data set returns totally incorrect result.

Also haven't figured out how to get a "July 11, 2011 6:00 PM" string out of the
"111071118000" string value. It appears the leading 1 and trailing 000 are
extraneous.

I'll be skinning my knees a few times learning to ride this new bicycle.

Hi Harold,
I have been working a little bit with BIRT. One thing you need to remember
about the Warehouse database is that it is 24 hours behind the real world.
You need to open the TSM DB2 database to be accessible direct from TCR and then
write reports direct to the TSM Server to be able to get 20 hours backup status.

I will first admit that I'm a TSM admin, not a "report writer" but we have
to come up with a replacement for the reporting component on the TSM 5.x
servers.

Finally got BIRT Report Designer configured to query the TCR WAREHOUS schema.

When previewing a report in BIRT Report Design the schedule start displays as
'1110714180036000'. That is somehow to be July 14th, 2011 at 6:00 PM.

Running the similar report in Administration Center (Reporting > Common
Reporting) properly displays the "Jul 14, 2011 6:00 PM" format.

The data is defined as CHAR in Birt, not a date/time as I would expect. I
don't know enough DB2 yet to look at the properties in WAREHOUS.

Anyone out there working, successfully, with BIRT?

SV: Reporting and BIRT in TSM 6.2

2011-07-17 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Harold,
I have been working a little bit with BIRT.

At least a few of you are holding out for Cognos in a future release.

Thanks...

We are having TSM V6.2.2.30( Win2008 R2) and the database is in an ever
growing state. I have expiration running daily and all other TSM operations are
going fine.
Till recently , i had DB2 "allow_reorg" ON for the tsm DB and thought the
reorg's where happening from the DB2 end.When i checked the db2diag.log . All
i can see is the below warnings from db2 health monitor

FUNCTION: DB2 UDB, Health Monitor, HealthIndicator::update, probe:500

Hence, I enabled TSM Reorg by updating DB2 auto_reorg to off and added options
in the dsmserv.opt

allowreorgtable yes
reorgbegintime 11:00
reorgduration 10

when i check in the actlog i see no Reorg related events. Also , the status of
these commands gives no indication of Reorg happening atall

Am i missing something?

Please could someone help me out here ..How can i get Online Reorg running in

SV: Reporting and BIRT in TSM 6.2

2011-07-08 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
With TCR that are included in TSM Monitoring and Reporting are including all
DLL's and Binaries for BIRT.
Don't remember if it was 2.2.1. But to import and create reports in the
Monitoring and Reporting is easy when you finally learn BIRT.

But don't try to upgrade to BIRT in TSM Reporting tool. In TSM 6.3 have IBM
upgrade the BIRT module so you can use all new functions in BIRT.
Also as Wanda say. But sources I have in IBM has they implement Cognos in to
TSM 6.3. Looking forward to see if Cognos is as good as BIRT.

Has anyone found an easy to follow setup doc for integrating BIRT 2.2.1 into
the Admin Center for TSM 6?

The install guide for Monitoring and Reporting , Feb 2011 has a very short
section and a link to
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/tivoli/library/t-tcr/ibm_tiv_tcr_customizing_report_designs.pdf.
That file refers to a zip "provided by the product." Anyone know where that
unnamed zip would be found?

Is BIRT the only way to work up custom report? Should I be using something
else, that's "supported"?

Seems like I'm swimming in the deep end without a jacket.

SV: Re: Ang: Re: TBMR or CBMR

2011-04-14 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
The main different between CBMR and TBMR are following.

CBMR:
* Can work stand-alone and leave it's own life without TSM.

* CBMR can save the server configuration layout together with the backup or
outside the backup such USB/FDD or Network Share.

* CBMR will backup minimal of data (OS, System State, TSM and Profiles) or
more, You can add more data manually to the CBMR backup.

* When CBMR use TSM as a repository it will collocate all data one large file.
That mean you will get less tape mounts during recovery

* The bad thing I can see, is if you do a CBMR backup, let's say 1000 servers
and the OS backup will be 20GB each and the on top of that do a TSM backup of
the same data of all 1000 servers, you will end up with a lot of extra space in
your TSM environment.
And IF you are moving over to TB Lic model you can end up to pay double amount
of money for CBMR lic to IBM.

* As Daniel Sparrman say, CBMR works stand-alone. But I know that Cristie
Software working hard on a Centralized GUI to overview CBMR/TBMR. And their are
a GA version that you can request at their website.

* You can schedule CBMR from the TSM Server and get CBMR reporting back to TSM
if it works.

TBMR:
* The main goal with TBMR when it was requested by a end-user and before it was
released was just to solve the space issue that CBMR was created. TBMR will
only create a small about of configuration peach locally on the HDD and let TSM
back it up.

* With TBMR you can end up that a recovery takes forever if you don't use
Collocation on our slow storage pools.

* The good part is that you can then easy put a SLA on each server and then
only use fast storage pools for SLA1 server and slow and cheap media for
non-important servers.

* TBMR can only create data locally on the server so the TSM BA Client can
backup the information. That mean non of the TBMR information/data can be saved
outside TSM Server knowledge, (because TBMR don't do any backup)

* TBMR has the TSM BA Client on the CD, that mean before you upgrade the TSM BA
Client and you are using TBMR, contact the Cristie UK support and see if the
latest TBMR recovery CD has support for the BA Client you want to use.

* TBMR works with Client-Side Dedup

COMMENT:
* Both software are using WinPE1 and WinPE2 for Recovery of Windows Servers.

* Both has Dissimilar Hardware Support

* Both works with Server Side Dedup. (I haven't test or heard if CBMR works
with Client Side Dedup yet).

I hope this helps as information for you all.

I preferred to use TBMR because I can easy overview it from the TSM Server much
easier and it takes less space on all storage pools.

Well, when I used it, the only data stored on the CBMR server was operating
system data, not user data. Unless that changed, the big amount of data is
still used from the TSM server.

Like I said, been a while since I used it, but then, OS data was gathered from
the CBMR server and user data (that is, the large amount of data you will be
restoring which is databases, user files or whatever server you are restoring)
was restored from TSM.

Again, Christian Svensson knows this alot better than I do, I evaluated it once
and decided to go for TBMR for my customers out of simplicity.

I was using CBMR for quite long time and we are using TBMR now for quite big
number of servers (upgraded from CBMR).
CBMR can keep configuration on diskette, USB drive, network drive or on TSM
Server, but it does not meen it keeps backup data on TSM Server.
TBMR keeps configuration and backup data on TSM Server and can read them from
TSM after booting from CD by using WinPE1 or WinPE2 (depend on OS).
So only TBMR is totally integrared with TSM and cann't keep backup data on
disks or tapes.
We are using TBMR 6.3.1 and TSM Clients 6.1.3.3 and 6.2.2.0 with TSM Server
5.5.4.1. Everything is working perfectly.

Hello All, a quick systemstate restore question

Our current backup process for Win2003 is to include the systemstate but
EXCLUDE C:\windows from the standard filesystem backup - this is under the
assumption that the systemstate covers all that is needed in there (for a
base system recovery at least)

In testing a system recovery (VMware environ) the systemstate and C: restore
work fine but after a reboot there is no network and no mouse - but the
keyboard works :)

If we do another backup of the donor with the C:\windows INCLUDED, then do a
systemstate & C: restore (in that order), all works perfectly after a
reboot.

So, was my understanding of the systemstate backup not correct i.e. is this
working as designed, or do I have an issue?

Client is 5.5.3.0.

Thanks

Steven

Ämne: Code for TSM for Sharepoint version 6.1.2

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find the site where I can download version 6.1.2 for TSM for
Microsoft Sharepoint. Does anyone know where I can get this code? I was
finally able to download v 6.1.0 off of Passport Advantage, but now I'm not
finding this later version anywhere.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

IBM LTO-5 and NetApp/nSeries

2011-02-17 Thread Christian Svensson
 Hi,
Does anyone run IBM Library with TS1050 (LTO-5) with their NetApp?
I just wonder if anyone have any known problems with NetApp (OnTap 7.3.2SP6)
and IBM TS3500 with TS1050?

MS Exch Info Store?

2011-01-21 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
I'm trying to do a TSM Exchange Storage Group restore of a Exchange 2007
stand-alone server to a RSG.
But when I start the TSM for Mail agent (5.5) does the client tell me "ACN5241E
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store is currently not running."

I know that the service are running and the backup running fine via the
Scheduler (System Account).
I'm guessing that the account I'm using doesn't have the correct access level
to Exchange.
My question is what access level should a TSM Exchange Restore person have?
