Re: [algogeeks] DE shaw question- urgent
there is no restriction at all, you can create n no of objects. A member function can call a private constructor any number of times. Just 1 single object is created bcoz this is the property of singleton class. A singleton class is a class which ensures the class has only one instance & it provides a global point of access to it. that it provides through a public static member function. This member function when invoked , first checks if the single instance has already been create, if yes it doesn't create a new 1, it gives you back the already created one, so even if you call it multiple times, you get the same object. nd thatz basically the intent behind. If you want to have more than one objects, you can modify this member function & can do that. Re: [algogeeks] DE shaw question- urgent
Calling the static method multiple times will return the same instance not multiple instances, that is the essence of singleton design pattern. Re: [algogeeks] DE shaw question- urgent
it usually works like this - public class Test1 { private static Test1 obj; // Static member hence singleton private Test1() // To prevent the Compiler from creating default constructor { // Do whatever initialization required } public static Test1 getInstance() { if (obj == null) { obj = new Test1(); // can call private constructor from within the class return obj; } // Will come here only if obj != null return obj; } } You can call Test1.getInstance to get the singleton object. Re: [algogeeks] DE shaw question- urgent
I think when we have to create a singleton class, we can use private constructor. Objects of such classes can be constructed using static functions that can be accessed using class name and scope resolution operators. This is useful because user can create only one object of that class, which is sometimes required. other case might be using static functions, but return a new object each time. We can also keep a limit on the no. of objects that can be created for a class.
